- Villa Albertine x Mobilier National awarded "Best in Show" at Design Miami/
Villa Albertine and the Mobilier National spotlighted five rising stars of French Design (Atelier George, Atelier d’Offard, Chloé Bensahel, Gala Espel and Dimitri Hlinka) at the 2023 edition of Design Miami/. Curated in a set designed by Alban Roger, their work develops a common language, a search for the golden age of French decorative arts through a contemporary lens. Between traditionalism and avant-gardism, each project is rooted in a reinvented artisanal technique, blending organic shapes and futuristic lines and curves. Each featured designer has also recently taken part in Villa Albertine’s residency program in New York, supported by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation. The program enables creators from around the world to embed in an American city of their choice for a custom-designed research project that engages with key questions facing society today. The booth is the recipient of the 2023 Design Miami/ “Best Special Project Award.” ATELIER D’ORFFARD envisions an immersive space as an ideal for minimalist living, using his signature materials of washi paper and the innovative and ecofriendly papier-mâché́. ATELIER GEORGE presents “Solar Suspension” composed of an opaline white glass globe, and three veined color glass planets – a work of interpretation inspired by the celestial world. GALA ESPEL is a silversmith, and her series “Archaeology of the Future” is an exploration ofthe fossil and organic world, combining craftsmanship and technology for a poetic and radical result. CHLOÉ BENSAHEL invites us to experience a sensory journey through her connected tapestries, mixing textile traditions and digital performance. DIMITRY HLINKA through his radiator “Amplitude” reimagines an everyday object in a feat of woodworking with abstract lines. In addition to their activation at Design Miami/, Villa Albertine and Mobilier National offer French designers and craftspeople a wide range of support and opportunities to help strengthen their projects and presence in the US. In so doing, the two institutions work to raise awareness of the exceptional French design and craft industries, and help build collaborations between designers, schools, galleries, and other institutions in on both sides of the Atlantic. In this spirit of Franco-American cooperation, Villa Albertine and Mobilier National, in partnership with the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, aim to encourage the emergence of a new generation of talent and professionals, while raising awareness of the essential contributions of design and craft to addressing contemporary social challenges. - DAG Announces Completion of 13,000-Square-Foot Hamilton Farms Facility in Millville, New Jersey
DAG, an industry leader in the planning, design and construction of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) facilities for the Cannabis and produce industries, is pleased to announce its completion of a 13,000-square-foot facility for Hamilton Farms in Millville, New Jersey. Hamilton Farms is a craft cultivator delivering high-quality Cannabis to the New Jersey adult-use market. DAG CEO Mark Gemignani and Director of Architecture and Engineering Jeff Lair attended the grand opening and ribbon-cutting event for the facility, which is ready to begin operations. After verifying the building’s suitability (it was previously a warehouse), DAG gutted and renovated the entire space for optimal configuration to allow the production of high-quality craft Cannabis. DAG led execution of design and construction, and integration of all specialty vendors, consultants, and subcontractors. DAG commenced the project in May 2022 with a preliminary high-level schematic design providing 4,496 square feet of canopy, including a seamless flow between mother, clone, propagation, vegetation and flower rooms; and appropriately sized rooms for harvest activities (dry, trim, cure) and post-harvest activities (packaging and vault). The company also designed and constructed a headhouse (water room), electrical room, IT room, areas for shipping and receiving, storage rooms, and ancillary spaces including offices, locker rooms and restrooms. Hamilton Farms CEO and COO, and longtime friends, Rahul Patel and Kunal Lodaya submitted their initial application for a New Jersey Cannabis business license in December 2021, after the February passing of adult-use Cannabis reform bills into law. They were among the first applicants to be approved for a conditional license, and one of the first operations to be approved for conversion into a full annual license. “DAG was with us from step one to build out an initial concept. We looked at many sites, and DAG’s insight was invaluable. Once we locked in our lease, DAG was integral in envisioning the design and layout; its team members were always available,” said Patel. “Their breadth of knowledge in CEA and planning, design and construction of Cannabis facilities is incredible.” “When we began this journey, we were new to the Cannabis industry and chose DAG because we could trust their guidance in helping us to make decisions. Their team is honest, and we value their opinion. They continue to be a part of many decisions we make day in and day out,” said Lodaya. “Throughout foundational planning, design, pre-construction and construction, and even now during post-construction, we are pleased to have guided and worked with Hamilton Farms to create an efficient and effective facility that will help them run a profitable Cannabis operation,” said Gemignani. “We helped them to be practical, thoughtful and economical, so their processes beyond growing can be seamless.” More on DAG – The Grow Facility Company DAG is an industry leader in the planning, design and construction of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) facilities for the indoor agriculture industry. - Maison Perrier-Jouët Presents ‘The Pollination Dance’ by Artist Fernando Laposse
Maison Perrier-Jouët has announced the opening of ‘The Pollination Dance’ installation by Mexican artist and designer Fernando Laposse at Design Miami/. The installation is inspired by the flower and its key role in a series of remarkable relationships within the ecosystem – in particular the process of pollination, a celebration of life defined by harmonious interactions between different species. The installation is on show at DesignMiami/ from 6th to 10th December 2023. A heritage of art and nature Maison Perrier-Jouët was founded in Epernay in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, a young couple united by their love of art and nature, as well as their vision of champagne. For more than 200 years, these three pillars have remained central to the House. In 1902, Emile Gallé, one of the pioneers of the Art Nouveau movement, drew a spray of Japanese white anemones, which today decorates the bottles of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque vintage champagnes. The iconic emblem of the House, the anemone symbolises its close relationship with nature. “Fernando Laposse has revisited the Art Nouveau heritage of Maison Perrier-Jouët with remarkable depth. Freely inspired by nature, he combines savoir-faire derived from traditional cultures with cutting-edge contemporary techniques. His work speaks to us through its beauty and poetry, at the same time as it reveals a deeper meaning,” says Axelle de Buffévent, Maison Perrier-Jouët Culture and Creative Director. Design as a force for change Artist and designer Fernando Laposse manifests a profound connection to nature through inspiring projects that raise awareness of ecological challenges, both local and global, including soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. His artistic practice, which is deeply rooted in the rural milieu, has simultaneous cultural, historical, social, political and environmental dimensions. For the past 10 years, Fernando Laposse has been working with native farmers in south-eastern Mexico to develop new materials and systems of production that benefit the local community and environment. “The Pollination Dance is the perfect embodiment of what I think design should be about: offering real-world solutions with a joyful and poetic dimension. I am convinced that solutions for local problems can be applied to global situations” says Fernando Laposse An installation devoted to observation of nature, meditation and reflection Maison Perrier-Jouët and Fernando Laposse share a vision of nature in which all species, mankind included, are of equal importance. The collaboration between species can help to solve the environmental problems faced by our societies. The artist advocates a return to the observation of nature – something he feels has gradually been lost in western societies – as evidenced by ‘The Pollination Dance’, which was inspired by the fundamental role of the flower within the ecosystem to which all species belong. In particular, he focuses on pollination, with its complex and harmonious interactions between plants and the insects and animals which pollinate them. Pollen is the essential connection between the protagonists in this precious, ephemeral event, which is a celebration of life. The installation is envisioned as a garden – half real, half dreamlike – in which all life forms interact. Sheer silk-organza drapes surround the space, creating a sense of immersion, while the hundreds of insects that have settled on them seem to dance around the visitor. Several times a day, a human hand refills a series of hourglasses, which contain yellow sand representing pollen. As the sand runs away, it covers branches filled with flowers – both imaginary blooms created by Fernando Laposse and Maison Perrier-Jouët’s emblematic anemones – and a diverse array of more or less familiar pollinators (honey bees, bumble bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, hummingbirds). Benches are an invitation to contemplation and reflection. A Traditional savoir-faire and contemporary techniques Painstakingly crafted by Fernando Laposse in his Mexico City studio, the installation took more than six months to create, and combines local artisanal savoir-faire with innovative technology. The drapes, which are made of natural silk fibres, are dyed with a mixture derived from an insect (cochineal) and a flower (marigold), which was produced by the artist using ancestral techniques. Offcuts of the precious fabric were used to create the outfits worn by the attendants who maintain the installation. The delicacy of the silk organza echoes that of the hourglasses, made from 3d printed soy starch based eco-resin, which are as fine and fragile as frosted glass, whose appearance they resemble. This same material was used to create the hundreds of insects, each one carefully sewn onto the drapes in the artist’s studio, as well as the plant and animal forms on the installation’s branches. The branches are lianas – as indeed are vines – gathered by Fernando Laposse from a jungle in central Mexico, thus giving dead wood a second life. A joyful, mindful vision of nature Like pollen swirling in the air in spring, the installation by Fernando Laposse conveys to visitors the joyful vision of nature he shares with Maison Perrier-Jouët – a vision at once positive and mindful. Faced with the accelerating loss of biodiversity, the House has made sustained efforts over the past 10 years to limit the influence of its activities on the environment and to adapt its practices to help nature renew itself. It has set a target as ambitious as the issue is important: to have 100% of its own vineyard in regenerative viticulture and 100% of its partner winegrowers committed to sustainable viticulture by 2030. The House is experimenting with four ways to enhance biodiversity: biomass plant covers, floral plant covers, vitiforestry and green corridors. “Maison Perrier-Jouët is determined to sustain its efforts to minimise pressure on the environment. Above all, it is striving to help enrich the biodiversity of the Champagne terroir, to which it has been profoundly attached for more than two centuries,” explains Cellar Master Séverine Frerson. Limited editions, a collector’s item and a collection of poems In keeping with the theme of ‘The Pollination Dance’, Fernando Laposse has also created two limited editions: one for Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs and the other for Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2014, the latter accompanied by two glasses designed in collaboration with the artist. The artist represents this fleeting moment as a cloud of dazzling yellow pollen evoking the vibrant personality of Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs, and as a delicate trail of precious gold pollen evoking the pale golden hue of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2014. To prolong the experience of ‘The Pollination Dance’, Fernando Laposse has created a unique piece for art collectors and lovers of exceptional champagnes: a mouth-blown glass dome containing a microcosm of the installation presented at Design Miami/. With only 15 units designed, this one-of-a-kind, monumental artwork – belonging to the Perrier-Jouët Objets Extraordinaires Collection – entitled ‘The Fleeting Dance’, is presented in a cabinet alongside a jeroboam of Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2008, selected from the Maison Perrier-Jouët Oenothèque, during Design Miami/. Maison Perrier-Jouët will also present a book of art and poetry co-created by Fernando Laposse and Mardonio Carballo, one of Mexico’s leading contemporary indigenous poets, with a preface by the writer Alberto Manguel. It is an invitation to discover a poetic continent – the continent of Nahuatl, the native language of the Aztecs, which still thrives today both in spoken and written form. The anthology of poems is entitled ‘The Song of Flowers’ – flower and song being the two terms used by ancient Mexicans to define their poetic art – and forms an integral part of Fernando Laposse’s installation. Visitors can read extracts of poems written by Mardonio Carballo for the book, which is the latest addition to Maison Perrier-Jouët’s Enchanting Library, a collection of timeless and essential works published by JBE Books. - Louis Vuitton Reveals Frank Gehry X Louis Vuitton Collection at Art Basel Miami
At this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, Louis Vuitton will present a selection of the works that legendary Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry has produced during his wide-ranging and longstanding collaboration with the Maison. Louis Vuitton returns to Art Basel Miami Beach to reveal the Frank Gehry x Louis Vuitton collection, In celebration of the architect’s longstanding collaboration with the Maison The specially designed booth in which the works will be presented embodies his trademark aesthetic and his constant experimentation with forms. Wood and cardboard models that have always been central to the architect’s design process find their form in the scenography, while five enveloping sail-like mesh structures nod to Gehry’s 2014 window displays for the Maison. Organized into four themes dear to Frank Gehry – Architecture and Form, Material Exploration, Animals, and his Twisted Box creation for “Celebrating Monogram”– the objectson display include handbags, trunks, perfume bottles, original artworks, preparatory sketches, and architectural models. The stand will notably showcase the world premiere of Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry, a limited-edition handbag collection. The collaborative capsule is based around three themes key to Frank Gehry’s long career – Architecture and Form, Material Exploration, and Animals – and features designs based upon the Maison’s iconic Capucines bags, the Twisted Box Trunk, and a remarkable Bear With Us Clutch, based upon Gehry’s 2014 Bear with Us sculpture. Each bag exemplifies the unique combination of Frank Gehry’s design prowess and Louis Vuitton’s remarkable craft and savoir-faire, such as a Capucines Mini Blossom with its glass-like resin petals inspired by perfume bottles and hammered LV recalling the logo he created for the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the iconic building he designed in Paris; a Capucines MM Floating Fish with painstakingly worked leather marquetry inspired by the piscine lamps on display at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and a Capucines MM Concrete Pockets whose innovative 3D cement-effect screen-printing gives the bag’s calfskin exterior the varied textures of Frank Gehry constructions. Another highlight of the Maison’s Art Basel Miami Beach stand is the “A Tea Party for Louis” Trunk, the architect’s distinctive creation for the 200 Trunks, 200 Visionaries exhibition that celebrated Louis Vuitton’s 200th birthday. Based upon Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, his striking sculpture-trunk is a collection of eight arrestingly inventive figurines, each one resembling both a character in the book and the model of an imaginary Frank Gehry building. When brought together, the characters form what the architect describes as a tea party for the Maison’s founder. Other Frank Gehry projects and artworks for Louis Vuitton on show include his Les Extraits perfume bottles and their unique stoppers handcrafted in Murano, Italy, and the Flaconnier Les Extraits designed to transport them, as well as a selection of sketches and models, such as preparatory drawings for his work on the “Celebrating Monogram” project and maquettes exploring his design for the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. These are accompanied by videos illustrating Gehry’s most famous collaborations with Louis Vuitton, and a painted portrait of the architect by French artist Jean-Philippe Delhomme. Following its successful initial presence at Art Basel in Basel, Paris and Miami Beach in 2022, Louis Vuitton is proud to have become a global Associate Partner of the prestigious fair this year. This additional support further confirms the Maison’s close and committed relationship to the arts, one that began nearly a century ago when Gaston-Louis Vuitton, the founder’s grandson, began commissioning artists to collaborate with Louis Vuitton on advertisements and perfume bottles. - ARCA Debuts Hank Willis Thomas Public Sculpture in Miami
ARCA, the leading purveyor of premium natural stone, wood and tile, is delighted to unveil an original artwork by internationally renowned artist Hank Willis Thomas. As creative worlds converge for Miami Art Week, the new large-scale sculpture entitled Loving Day (Marble No. 1) presents a creative collaboration between leading artist studio and marble producer to demonstrate the vast creative possibilities of natural stone. Hank Willis Thomas is a conceptual artist working across sculpture, painting, photography and more, and primarily working with themes related to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture. Loving Day (Marble No. 1) provides an extension of Thomas’ ever-expanding sculptural practice, and the artist’s desire to play with both scale and semi-precious and precious materials. The new work forms part of the artist's ongoing Punctum series, which is inspired by Roland Barthes’ photographic theory of punctum referring to the detail in an image that pierces or sticks with the viewer, to create a connection between artist, artwork and viewer. Loving Day (Marble No. 1) furthers Thomas’ exploration of gesture-focused sculptures that investigate themes such as individual and collective identity, ambition, perseverance, unity and community. Loving Day (Marble No. 1) consists of two monumental arms – each approximately 4 ft wide and 7 1/2 ft high – enmeshed in a firm grasp, creating a dynamic statement on relationships, connection and partnership. Thomas translates such gestures of strength and solidarity, reconfirmed by the choice of material, and the weight of physical and symbolic gestures. "Loving Day (Marble No.1)’ captures a moment of tenderness and affection shared between two individuals, and seeks to immortalize and aggrandize this gesture at a large-scale. By using such durable materials, I hope to portray the couple’s shared affection, and exhibit their strength, both individually and as a duo.” Hank Willis Thomas With ARCA’s guidance and expertise, Thomas selected Green Levanto and Carrara Marble from Italian quarries that provide a statement of robustness, both materially and gesturally. Three smaller complementary sculptures will accompany Loving Day (Marble No. 1) on display at ARCA’s showroom. Echoing the beauty and gesture of the principal sculpture, the additional works will comprise Black Portoro and Arabescato, Port Laurent and Giallo Siena, and Lepanto and Gold Onyx respectively. The extraordinary Italian stones produce a cohesive statement of materiality and color expression. "Through the hands of Hank, our marble has been reborn as an emblem of artistic expression. ‘Loving Day (Marble No. 1)’ not only reflects his unparalleled talent, but also the inherent beauty and versatility of our materials," declared José Fernández, CEO ARCA World Wide. "Hank Willis Thomas has ingeniously pushed the boundaries of his sculptures, infusing our marble with a vision that is both profound and captivating. This collaboration has given rise to an artistic marvel, illustrating the endless potential of ARCA's materials," claimed Gerardo Cortina Wiechers, Founder ARCA World Wide. The unveiling of Loving Day (Marble No. 1) will take place at ARCA Wynwood’s showroom on December 7th during Miami Art Week, and remain on view until January 31, 2024. This presentation promises to be a must-see moment of the week, providing art enthusiasts and collectors alike with an opportunity to witness the convergence of two innovative powerhouses.
