Lotus House, the nation’s largest women’s homeless shelter and a national model for holistic care, has opened the Children’s Village, a 70,000-square-foot campus devoted to education, health, and creative expression for children and families in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. They joined Constance Collins , founder of Lotus House, and the organization’s team at the grand opening ceremony, which also celebrated a $5 million donation from Ken Griffin , founder and CEO of Citadel and founder of Griffin Catalyst. Griffin’s contribution will help sustain the Children’s Village’s programs and expand access to critical educational and therapeutic resources. Located across from the 500-bed Lotus Village shelter, the new Children’s Village embodies a simple but powerful vision: that homelessness can be ended and even prevented through love, education, and community. The facility brings together more than a dozen nonprofits offering services such as early childhood education, after-school programs, art therapy, mindfulness, and health care — all under one roof designed to foster growth, creativity, and belonging. “The next step is preventing homelessness by empowering children and families through educational and therapeutic supports, year-round programming, and greater access to healthcare and social services,” said Constance Collins . “We are deeply grateful to Ken Griffin, Gisele Bündchen, and Gloria Estefan for their generosity and shared belief in the power of community to change lives.” Ken Griffin  called the Children’s Village “a powerful example of how communities can come together to create lasting change,” adding that “when we invest in children, we invest in the future of our city.” On Thursday, November 6 , Miami’s philanthropic community gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony and gala celebrating the milestone. Attendees included Collins , Bündchen , Estefan , and community members dedicated to supporting Lotus House’s mission. Anchored by the Lotus House Center for the Advancement of Children and Families, the Children’s Village houses 14 nonprofit partners offering arts, health, mindfulness, legal, and educational programs. The project was supported through $32 million in New Markets Tax Credit financing arranged by The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation, U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation, Florida Community Loan Fund, and Enterprise Community Investment, Inc., along with pro bono contributions from Civic Construction, Behar Font & Partners, and other Miami-based firms. • How Renters’ Insurance Can Save You from Unexpected Losses

Spacious homes, designer interiors, high-end technology, and other elements of carefully curated lifestyles are all part of renting in Miami’s luxury housing market. The Magic City’s reputation for upscale living is clearly well deserved, and it’s spreading. In 2023, there were 11 times as many millionaire renters in Miami as in 2019. However, whether renters choose a luxurious apartment or an Art Deco mansion, a variety of risks can result in disruptive financial losses within a matter of moments. This is where renters’ insurance comes in. Renters’ Insurance Explained Designed specifically for those who rent their homes, renters’ insurance protects personal property and provides legal liability coverage against unexpected damages or losses. For example, if someone breaks into a rental apartment and steals $20,000 worth of jewelry, the tenant may be able to get a portion, if not all, of the cost reimbursed by the provider if they have insurance. As with other policy types, those aimed at renters cover a variety of losses and damages through various coverage types. Some landlords in Miami require this type of insurance for their tenants as a means to protect them from unexpected financial losses that might force them to vacate a property before the lease expires. Other landlords leave the decision entirely to those leasing the property. Either way, a landlord cannot stipulate which provider or policy tenants should choose.  It’s up to the tenant to approach providers for a renters insurance quote  they can use to make an informed decision. This quote should cover all their valuables that will be on the property, and in some cases, high-value items such as artworks or jewelry must be specifically listed. The Landlord’s Insurance Misconception Some tenants forego renters’ insurance under the misconception that their landlord’s policy would cover them in the event of theft or property damage, but this is not the case. Also known as dwelling insurance, the landlord’s policy is designed to protect them as the property owner, but not the possessions of the people living in the property itself. These policies typically protect the rental property’s physical structure, including its walls, floors, and fixtures. Most policies also provide some liability coverage if the landlord is held liable for injuries to a visitor or tenant on the property. The property owner’s insurance policy does not cover tenants’ personal belongings, making renters’ insurance vitally important. Protection Against Unexpected Losses For those who rent their homes, renters’ insurance is always a good idea. Some of the ways it offers protection against unexpected losses include: Personal Belongings Can Be Replaced With so much to consider, it’s easy for renters to underestimate the cost of replacing their belongings in the event of theft, fire, or another cause of loss. The cost of replacing designer clothing, high-end jewelry, and upscale electronics, appliances, furniture, and sporting equipment can add up quickly.  Covering various types of losses, renters’ insurance helps reduce the financial burden. When taking out a policy, clients typically have the option to choose between actual cash value coverage and replacement cost coverage. The former accounts for depreciation, while the latter provides reimbursement for new equivalents. Many policies also offer off-premises coverage, which covers personal belongings damaged or lost outside of the property. Assistance with Temporary Living Expenses While some events, such as housebreaking and theft, deprive renters of some of their personal belongings, they do not render their homes unlivable. However, other events, such as an explosion or fire, can make it impossible to remain on the property.  In these situations, renters often need to cover a range of additional living expenses, such as hotel stays or new rental units, restaurant bills, storage fees, and cab fare or vehicle hire fees (if their vehicle is rendered unroadworthy) while waiting for their home to be repaired or rebuilt. A good renters' insurance policy should offer reimbursement for these and other temporary living expenses. Liability Protection There’s more to renters’ insurance than replacing stolen or damaged personal property and covering temporary living expenses. It also offers liability protection for legal fees, medical bills, and property damage, usually ranging from $100,000 to $300,000. There are several common scenarios in which renters’ insurance liability protection can safeguard tenants against unexpected losses. One of these is slip and fall accidents, such as a guest tripping on a step or rug and falling, which can result in a broken bone. Another scenario is when the renter’s actions impact a neighboring unit, such as leaving a faucet running in the bathroom, which can cause water damage in their neighbor’s bedroom. A third scenario involves the tenant’s pet. For example, the tenant would be protected if their pet bites a guest or damages a guest’s iPhone or Hermès handbag.  Determining How Much Renters’ Insurance You Need One of the most important aspects of purchasing renters’ insurance is for tenants to ensure they’re neither paying more than they should nor that they’re underinsured. When calculating their ideal coverage, tenants should consider several key factors. First, they should create a home inventory by listing all personal items, electronics, furniture, clothing, and other belongings in every room, noting the estimated replacement costs. The inventory should also include items stored elsewhere (such as off-site storage units), as well as purchase receipts and photos of the items, if possible. Second, calculate the total replacement value for all items in the inventory to work out the minimum amount of personal property coverage required. Third, renters should think about their lifestyle and potential liability exposure. If they live in a high-traffic area, own a pet, or frequently entertain guests, they should consider selecting a policy with higher liability limits. Lastly, it’s important to consider different policies’ deductible amounts, compare replacement cost versus actual cash value coverage, and optional floaters/riders for items of exceptional value. Renters can then contact providers, compare quotes, and choose the policy that best meets their needs. • How to Choose the Right Color Contacts That Fit Your Facial Features

Selecting colored contacts is more than just choosing a favorite hue. The goal is to pick a color that enhances your natural facial features subtly. Like finding the perfect pair of jeans, choosing the right colored lenses means aligning with your facial proportions, understanding sizing, and considering the subtle details that greatly affect the overall appearance. Some individuals wear colored contacts with ease, while others struggle to make them look right. This isn't about choosing colors at random, but about how the lenses enhance your distinct face and eye shape. The key is selecting a shade that brings out your natural features. Here's how to discover the ideal colored contacts for you. Colors for Balancing Facial Proportions It’s easy to think that colored contacts are just about picking a shade you like, but how that color plays off your face shape  is crucial. Your face is unique, so why should your contacts be any different? Certain colors can enhance or soften your features, making all the difference between a look that feels natural and one that feels off. Let’s start with those with rounder faces. For those with fuller cheeks or a softer jawline, choosing lighter shades such as gray, hazel, or light blue can be quite effective. The colors enhance depth and provide definition around your eyes. The light shades will complement the roundness of your face, subtly balancing it and providing your features with added structure For those with more angular faces – sharp cheekbones, defined jawlines, and straight lines – darker shades, like deep browns or even black, tend to work better. The colors gently smooth the more pronounced aspects of your features, resulting in a more balanced appearance. Alternatively, if you want something a bit fresher, green or soft blue lenses can still give a little contrast, but without the harshness that some other dark colors may bring. Diameter and Sizing: Finding the Right Fit Much like finding clothes that fit just right, contact lenses  come in a variety of sizes, and sizing matters. The diameter of a contact lens is one of those little details that can either elevate your look or make it fall flat. If you have ever worn contacts that felt either too large or too small for your eyes, you understand how uncomfortable the incorrect size can be. However, it is not solely about comfort; it also involves how the lens highlights your natural features. Standard contact lenses are available in two primary sizes, which are 14mm and 15mm. A 14mm lens closely resembles the natural size of your eye, providing a more understated enhancement. This option is ideal for achieving a natural look that enhances your eye color while maintaining the shape of your eyes. A 14 mm lens adds a little definition and brightness to the eye, but it won’t make your pupils look unnaturally large. A 15mm lens offers a slightly larger size and is perfect for those seeking more dramatic outcomes. These lenses can enhance the size and boldness of your eyes, yet they may overpower smaller or narrower faces if not chosen wisely. When deciding between the two options, consider what suits your natural proportions most effectively. It is essential to select a diameter that enhances your face shape rather than simply opting for the largest size available. Limbal Ring Considerations: Define Your Look If you’ve ever looked at someone’s eyes and noticed how sharp and defined they look, chances are, you’ve noticed their limbal ring. The limbal ring is the dark outline around your iris, and a well-defined limbal ring can make your eyes look bigger and more intense. It's one of those little details that can have a huge impact. If you have smaller eyes, or if you want to make your eyes pop, a colored contact with a thicker, more defined limbal ring might be exactly what you need. The dark ring creates a contrast that makes your eyes appear larger  and more awake. It’s subtle, but it makes a difference. On the flip side, if you have naturally large eyes or you’re going for a more understated look, you might want to steer clear of overly bold limbal rings. A softer, more subtle ring, or no ring at all, can help create a more natural vibe, letting the color of the contacts do the talking instead. The key here is understanding how the limbal ring works with your natural eye shape. If you’re unsure, try different styles and see which gives you the balance you're looking for. Beauty Tips: Elevate Your Appearance with Color Now that we’ve covered the technical aspects, let’s dive into ways to elevate your colored contacts with some added flair. Your contacts are only one piece of the puzzle, and how you combine them with your overall appearance truly matters. For starters, think about your skin tone. If you have warm undertones, colors like brown, honey, and hazel will complement your complexion. These shades bring warmth to your face and blend seamlessly with your skin. On the flip side, if you have cool undertones, you might want to look for contacts in shades of blue, green, or violet. These colors contrast beautifully with cool undertones, bringing out the best in your complexion. Hair color also plays a big role in how your colored contacts will look. If you have light hair – blonde or light brown – lighter contacts like blue, gray, or green tend to look great. They create a soft, cohesive look that ties everything together. Darker hair colors, such as black or dark brown, can carry off more vibrant shades like deep brown, dark gray, or even a rich green. And of course, makeup can amplify your colored contacts. If you want your eyes to really stand out, a touch of eyeliner or mascara can enhance their definition. Soft eyeshadows that complement the color of your contacts can also add depth, making the eyes look bigger and more expressive. If you’re going for a more natural look, skip the heavy makeup and let your contacts do the heavy lifting. The goal is to balance your eyes with the rest of your features so you don’t end up competing for attention. To sum up, choosing the right colored contacts is about finding the one that works with your face shape, eye size, and overall look. It's all about enhancing your natural features, not covering them up. Whether you’re looking to make a subtle change or go for something a little bolder, understanding how the lenses interact with your facial proportions will help you make a decision that feels effortless and looks natural. Ultimately, the best contact lenses are the ones that make you feel like the best version of yourself. And when you find the right pair, everything just clicks.  By ML Staff.
