- World Architecture Festival 2025 Names Global Winners in Architecture, Interiors, Future Projects, and Landscape Design
The World Architecture Festival announced its 2025 winners during a final gala at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where architects from around the world gathered for the festival’s eighteenth edition. The Holy Redeemer Church and Community Centre of Las Chumberas by Fernando Menis Major honors included World Building of the Year , World Interior of the Year , Future Project of the Year , and Landscape of the Year , alongside an expanded group of Special Prizes. World Building of the Year The Holy Redeemer Church and Community Centre of Las Chumberas by Fernando Menis The Holy Redeemer Church and Community Centre of Las Chumberas in La Laguna, Spain, designed by Fernando Menis, was named World Building of the Year . The project anchors a once-neglected neighborhood, combining a church, community center, and public square into a civic landmark. Its phased construction stemmed from a donation-based funding model, resulting in four independent volumes completed over 16 years. Inspired by volcanic terrain, the structure uses rough-textured masses punctuated by narrow openings that channel daylight through sculptural metal and glass. The interior relies on an unglazed cross and zenithal light rather than windows, producing a stark, contemplative atmosphere. Concrete defines both structure and experience. Locally produced and thermally efficient, it provides acoustic performance through a mix of chipped concrete and volcanic stone, enabling sound control comparable to a performance venue. Judges cited the project’s intensity, mastery of light, and its dual role as a symbolic and everyday anchor for the community. The Super Jury was chaired by Mohsen Mostafavi and included Laurinda Spear of Arquitectonica, Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, and Sir Peter Cook of Studio Crablab. World Interior of the Year FRACTAL CHAPEL at State Hospital Graz by INNOCAD architecture The World Interior of the Year went to FRACTAL CHAPEL by INNOCAD architecture in Graz, Austria. Located at a state hospital and overseen by the Protestant Church, the chapel uses fractal geometry and biophilic design—developed in collaboration with researchers from the University of Oregon / Fractals Research—to create a restorative environment. Wood dominates the material palette, supporting the play of light across double-height interiors and a full-height glass façade. A sculpted walnut-root altar stands at the center, framed by pattern, texture, and controlled illumination to shape a calm, introspective experience. Future Project of the Year Gelephu International Airport by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group The Future Project of the Year was awarded to Gelephu International Airport by BIG–Bjarke Ingels Group in Bhutan. Scheduled to open in 2029, the airport blends regional craftsmanship with modern engineering, featuring a triple-height entry hall, timber diagrid structure, traditional carving, and natural ventilation strategies. Designed as a mobility hub, the terminal organizes gates, retail, and dining on an upper level with views toward the Himalayas. Space for yoga, meditation, and gong baths reflects Bhutan’s emphasis on well-being. Landscape of the Year Embracing Flood: Xinjiang River Ecological Corridor by Turenscape The Landscape of the Year honor went to Embracing Flood: Xinjiang River Ecological Corridor by Turenscape in Jiangxi Province, China. The project revitalizes 102 hectares of floodplain using sponge city principles to bolster resilience, restore habitat, and maintain public access. By embracing seasonal flooding rather than resisting it, the corridor provides a low-maintenance model for climate adaptation. Eden Dock in London, Taikoo Place in Hong Kong, and The Osona Viewpoint Network in Spain received high commendations. Special Prizes Alibaba Xixi Tech Campus Landscape by ASPECT Studios The festival also recognized projects across focused categories: American Beauty Prize : Isla Intersections Supportive Housing & Paseo by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects Best Use of Colour : Alibaba Xixi Tech Campus Landscape by ASPECT Studios Best Use of Natural Light : Redhill Early Learning Center by Hubo Studio Best Use of Stone : Dialogue with Nature – Commune Store by Atelier Global Limited Best Use of Timber : Quinta De Adorigo Winery by Atelier Sergio Rebelo Small Project of the Year : The Holy Redeemer Church and Community Centre of Las Chumberas by Fernando Menis Student Charette Prize : SPONGE OF THE KEYS by the University of Manitoba Sustainability Prize : 1265 Borregas by MGA | Michael Green Architecture and SERA Architects GROHE Water Prize : waterspaces by Rizoma del agua Additionally, the festival launched the 40 Under 40 North America initiative in partnership with The Architect’s Newspaper to spotlight architects across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. - Why Custom Lifted Trucks Are Becoming the New Status Symbol for Adventure-Ready Drivers
Driving a custom lifted truck has increasingly become more than just a practical choice. For many, it’s a powerful statement about identity, lifestyle, and values. As roads become more congested and driving norms gravitate toward uniformity and efficiency, lifted trucks represent a different kind of freedom: one linked to ruggedness, adventure, and individuality. Image by DepositPhotos From mountain passes to urban streets, these vehicles are making waves, and in this post we’ll explore why custom lifted trucks are fast becoming the new status symbol for adventure-ready drivers. From Utility to Identity: The Evolution of the Truck Once reserved for farmers, builders, and those who needed heavy-duty utility, trucks have transformed. Over the decades, what began as purely functional machines evolved into versatile vehicles blending comfort, performance, and personal expression. As lifestyles changed – with more time for weekend getaways, off-road trips, and outdoor hobbies – trucks became doorways to adventure. The surge in aftermarket modifications, especially lifting and customizing suspensions, mirrors this evolving role. Today’s truck owners are often not just concerned with towing or hauling loads; they’re thinking about how the vehicle serves their lifestyle. Instead of a pickup that simply transports equipment, many now view their truck as a personal platform capable of taking them from a corporate parking lot to a forest trailhead, or from the surf to a city café. The shift reflects a broader social trend: vehicles become extensions of identity, not just tools. Why Lifting and Customization Appeal to Adventure-Mindset Drivers A number of interlocking motivations explain the growing popularity of custom lifted trucks among adventure-ready drivers. First, there’s the capability factor. Lifted trucks offer improved ground clearance, allowing drivers to tackle rough terrain, steep inclines, uneven trails, or snow-packed roads more confidently. For those who regularly frequent remote campsites, mountain roads, beaches, or rugged off-grid locations, this translates into practical advantages: fewer scrapes to the undercarriage, more room for larger tires, and better approach and departure angles. In essence, lifting isn’t just cosmetic – it enables exploration beyond paved roads. Second, customization enables personalization. From oversized all-terrain tires to reinforced suspension, roof racks, light bars, and rugged bumpers, each modification reflects the owner’s priorities and aesthetic preferences. This personal touch transforms a mass-produced vehicle into a unique conveyance that resonates with who they are: adventurous, independent, ready to go off the beaten path. That sense of personal identity resonates powerfully for many drivers. Finally, there’s the community aspect. Many aftermarket shops and custom garages now cater to this evolving demand. Owners exchange tips and share experiences on forums and social media groups, discussing which lift kit handles heavy cargo better, how different tire sizes affect handling, or which suspension setups offer the smoothest ride off-road. This shared enthusiasm reinforces the sense that owning a lifted, custom-built truck isn’t just a purchase, it’s joining a lifestyle movement. Custom Trucks as a Modern Status Symbol For decades, status in the automotive world was signaled by luxury sedans, sports cars, or high-end SUVs. But today, for many enthusiasts and outdoor lovers, a different kind of status is emerging: one tied less to opulence and more to authenticity, capability, and freedom. Custom lifted trucks fit this niche exceptionally well. Driving a truck that stands tall, with an aggressive stance and high clearance, sends a statement: the driver values self-reliance, adventure, and capability. It indicates they’re not just commuting but could just as likely be heading for a backcountry trail or an overlanding trip. Like the way a tailored suit might convey professionalism in business circles, a well-put-together lifted truck conveys preparedness and independence in outdoors culture. The rising popularity of outdoor adventures – from camping and mountain biking to overlanding and adventure travel – means more people see value in a vehicle that can handle unpredictable terrain. This has created a growing subculture in which lifted trucks are admired not only for how they look, but for what they enable. Among peers in adventure communities, a custom lifted truck can function as a badge of credibility. As such, what you drive becomes part of your social identity. Builders and garages customizing these trucks, equipping them with rugged yet sleek details, play a role not merely in engineering, but in enabling personal storytelling. This aligns with broader consumer trends: people increasingly invest not just in products, but in experiences and identities tied to those products. Image by DepositPhotos Practical Benefits Aligned With Lifestyle For many owners, the appeal of a custom lifted truck lies not only in appearance or status, but in tangible, everyday benefits, especially for those whose lives straddle both urban environments and off-road adventures. Lifted trucks often carry extra load capacity, enabling drivers to haul camping gear, kayaks, bikes, or building materials. They’re suited for heavy-duty accessories like winches, roof racks, or cargo carriers, ideal for overlanding or frequent outdoor excursions. For people living where environments vary – perhaps paved roads for commuting, but dirt roads for weekend trips – a lifted truck offers a versatility few other vehicles match. Additionally, modern custom builds take ride quality seriously. Quality lift kits, balanced suspension upgrades, and proper alignment mean that drivers don’t necessarily have to sacrifice comfort for capability. With the right configuration, a lifted truck can deliver smooth highway miles one moment and rugged trail handling the next. This blend of ruggedness and comfort resonates strongly with drivers who don’t want to compromise between daily commuting needs and weekend adventure goals. Considering Maintenance, Safety, and Responsibility It would be disingenuous to talk about custom lifted trucks without addressing challenges and responsibilities. Proper lifting and customizing must be done carefully, ideally by experienced professionals, to maintain handling, braking performance, and overall safety. Oversized tires and incorrect suspension setups can affect steering geometry, braking response, and load management. Legal considerations – such as local vehicle regulations or roadworthiness standards – may also come into play. Prospective owners must balance style and capability with responsibility. Regular maintenance becomes more important: frequent inspections of suspension components, tires, and alignment are vital. Additionally, being aware of the limits – whether in off-road terrain, payload, or legal compliance – is part of responsible ownership. For many enthusiasts, though, these trade-offs are manageable once the truck is configured properly and usage is aligned with its capabilities. Where Drivers Are Finding Purpose and Quality Builds For those interested in customizing or building their own lifted adventure-ready truck, there are specialized shops, custom garages, and communities dedicated to this kind of work. Enthusiast forums, social media groups, and overlanding clubs offer guidance on how to configure a truck that meets both legal requirements and personal adventure goals. One notable resource in this space is Ultimate Rides : a platform focusing on curated custom builds and lifestyle-driven vehicles. Whether you’re exploring options for suspension upgrades, want inspiration for customization, or simply enjoy browsing adventurous rigs, such resources help prospective owners understand what’s possible and how to do it right. By connecting with quality builders and like-minded enthusiasts, drivers can ensure their vehicles are both safe and expressive. Image by DepositPhotos Conclusion: More Than a Truck – a Statement of Lifestyle In a world where many possessions are mass-produced and interchangeable, custom lifted trucks stand out – not just because they look different, but because they represent something different. They signal independence, readiness for adventure, and a certain rugged authenticity that conventional city cars and luxury SUVs cannot match. For those who straddle the demands of modern life and an appetite for exploration, a custom lifted truck offers an appealing balance: practicality for everyday needs, capability for off-grid escapades, and a platform for self-expression. It’s no wonder that among adventure-minded drivers, lifted trucks are emerging as a new kind of status symbol: one rooted not in opulence, but in freedom, skill, and personal identity. By ML Staff. - The Clear Choice: Why Glass Pools Are Elevating Miami Homes
In Miami, where architecture meets art and lifestyle defines real estate value, glass pools have become the newest symbol of luxury and smart investment. These transparent-walled pools don’t just dazzle—they deliver returns. Photo by Li Yang, Unsplash From a value standpoint, homes with glass pools stand out immediately in Miami’s competitive market. Buyers are drawn to the modern aesthetic and the sense of openness that a glass pool creates, especially in high-end neighborhoods like Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and Miami Beach. Realtors report that these visually striking pools can boost a property’s resale value by as much as 10–20%, often serving as the home’s defining feature. But beauty isn’t their only strength. Modern glass pools are designed with advanced materials—tempered, laminated glass panels that resist weathering and are surprisingly low-maintenance. Unlike traditional concrete or tile pools, they don’t require resurfacing or heavy cleaning; the smooth glass finish resists algae buildup and makes upkeep simpler and faster. At the forefront of this growing trend is Diamond Spa (diamondspas.com), a company recognized for its expertise in custom glass and stainless-steel pool design. Serving not only the vibrant Florida market but clients nationwide, Diamond Spa has become a leader in crafting luxury rooftop pools and spas that embody Miami’s modern, sophisticated style. Their designs merge durability and elegance—perfect for homeowners who want their pool to be as impressive as their view. Elevated / rooftop acrylic and stainless-steel spa swimming pool. Copyright Weldon Brewster Photography According to Mitchell Martinek, Lead Design Manager at Diamond Spa, the company’s focus on long-term satisfaction starts with making every project effortless to maintain. “We prioritize ease of use and automation, particularly for clients with second homes or vacation properties,” he explains. “We design the equipment so that it can be connected to the home’s network or integrated with a home automation system, allowing clients to monitor and manage their pool or spa remotely.” Martinek also sees clear trends shaping the future of pool design. As more people embrace urban living, smaller plunge pools and multifunctional spas are gaining popularity. “These compact pools can double as a spa in the winter and a pool in the summer, with features like swim jets for exercise,” he says. “This approach not only fits city living but also reduces long-term operating costs.” In short: glass pools aren’t just a design statement—they’re a lifestyle and investment move that captures the spirit of modern Miami living: bright, bold, and built to last. And with experts like Diamond Spa leading the way, Miami’s skyline—and its backyards—have never looked more stunning.
