  • Is Your Gas Stove Bad For Your Health?

Cooks love their gadgets, from countertop slow cookers to instant-read thermometers. Now, there’s increasing interest in magnetic induction cooktops – surfaces that cook much faster than conventional stoves, without igniting a flame or heating an electric coil. Some of this attention is overdue: Induction has long been popular in Europe and Asia, and it is more energy-efficient than standard stoves. But recent studies have also raised concerns about indoor air emissions from gas stoves. Academic researchers and agencies such as the California Air Resources Board have reported that gas stoves can release hazardous air pollutants while they’re operating, and even when they’re turned off. As an environmental health researcher who does work on housing and indoor air, I have participated in studies that measured air pollution in homes and built models to predict how indoor sources would contribute to air pollution in different home types. Here is some perspective on how gas stoves can contribute to indoor air pollution, and whether you should consider shifting away from gas. Natural gas has long been marketed as a clean fuel, but research on its health and environmental effects is calling that idea into question. Respiratory effects One of the main air pollutants commonly associated with using gas stoves is nitrogen dioxide, or NO₂, which is a byproduct of fuel combustion. Nitrogen dioxide exposures in homes have been associated with more severe asthma and increased use of rescue inhalers in children. This gas can also affect asthmatic adults, and it contributes to both the development and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nitrogen dioxide in homes comes both from outdoor air that infiltrates indoors and from indoor sources. Road traffic is the most significant outdoor source; unsurprisingly, levels are higher close to major roadways. Gas stoves often are the most substantial indoor source, with a greater contribution from large burners that run longer. The gas industry’s position is that gas stoves are a minor source of indoor air pollutants. This is true in some homes, especially with respect to exposures averaged over months or years. But there are many homes in which gas stoves contribute more to indoor nitrogen dioxide levels than pollution from outdoor sources does, especially for short-term “peak” exposures during cooking time. For example, a study in Southern California showed that around half of homes exceeded a health standard based on the highest hour of nitrogen dioxide concentrations, almost entirely because of indoor emissions. How can one gas stove contribute more to your exposure than an entire highway full of vehicles? The answer is that outdoor pollution disperses over a large area, while indoor pollution concentrates in a small space. How much indoor pollution you get from a gas stove is affected by the structure of your home, which means that indoor environmental exposures to NO₂ are higher for some people than for others. People who live in larger homes, have working range hoods that vent to the outdoors and have well-ventilated homes in general will be less exposed than those in smaller homes with poorer ventilation. But even larger homes can be affected by gas stove usage, especially since the air in the kitchen does not immediately mix with cleaner air elsewhere in the home. Using a range hood when cooking, or other ventilation strategies such as opening kitchen windows, can bring down concentrations dramatically. Ventilation is an essential tool for improving indoor air quality in homes. Methane and hazardous air pollutants Nitrogen dioxide is not the only pollutant of concern from gas stoves. Some pollution with potential impacts on human health and Earth’s climate occurs when stoves aren’t even running. A 2022 study estimated that U.S. gas stoves not in use emit methane – a colorless, odorless gas that is the main component of natural gas – at a level that traps as much heat in the atmosphere as about 400,000 cars. Some of these leaks can go undetected. Although gas distributors add an odorant to natural gas to ensure that people will smell leaks before there is an explosion risk, the smell may not be strong enough for residents to notice small leaks. Some people also have a much stronger sense of smell than others. In particular, those who have lost their sense of smell – whether from COVID-19 or other causes – may not smell even large leaks. One recent study found that 5% of homes had leaks that owners had not detected that were large enough to require repair. This same study showed that leaking natural gas contained multiple hazardous air pollutants, including benzene, a cancer-causing agent. While measured concentrations of benzene did not reach health thresholds of concern, the presence of these hazardous air pollutants could be problematic in homes with substantial leaks and poor ventilation. Reasons to switch: Health and climate So, if you live in a home with a gas stove, what should you do and when should you worry? First, do what you can to improve ventilation, such as running a range hood that vents to the outdoors and opening kitchen windows while cooking. This will help, but it won’t eliminate exposures, especially for household members who are in the kitchen while cooking takes place. If you live in a smaller home or one with a smaller closed kitchen, and if someone in your home has a respiratory disease like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, exposures may still be concerning even with good ventilation. Swapping out a gas stove for one that uses magnetic induction would eliminate this exposure while also providing climate benefits. There are multiple incentive programs to support gas stove changeovers, given their importance for slowing climate change. For example, the recently signed Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which includes many provisions to address climate change, offers rebates for the purchase of high-efficiency electric appliances such as stoves. Dozens of U.S. cities have adopted or are considering regulations that bar natural gas hookups in new-construction homes after specified dates to speed a transition away from fossil fuels. At the same time, at least 20 states have adopted laws or regulations that prohibit bans on natural gas. Moving away from gas stoves is especially important if you are investing in home energy efficiency measures, whether you are doing it to take advantage of incentives, reduce energy costs or shrink your carbon footprint. Some weatherization steps can reduce air leakage to the outdoors, which in turn can increase indoor air pollution concentrations if residents don’t also improve kitchen ventilation. In my view, even if you’re not driven to reduce your carbon footprint – or you’re just seeking ways to cook pasta faster – the opportunity to have cleaner air inside your home may be a strong motivator to make the switch. • Alessandro Michele Designs Custom Pieces For Bjork's Latest Work

The film “Ovule” directed by Björk and Nick Knight, was released on September 14, as part of the artist’s new album “Fossora” set for release in September. This occasion continues the creative dialogue between Björk and Alessandro Michele following the co-direction of the Artist’s music video for ‘The Gate’ back in 2017. Björk wore a custom Gucci harness and dress constructed from spirals of pleated organza in graduating tones of crimson and burgundy, embellished with crystalline edging and cascading sequin fringe worn over a matching body-suit in crimson latex. A dramatic riot of sparkles and volumes and shades that grows around the bust and shoulders to frame the face and smoothly fades in the gown that eases on the floor as a flower that blooms upside down revealing its petals. Gucci is pleased to announce that Creative Director Alessandro Michele has designed two custom pieces to be featured in “Ovule”, the film by Björk and Nick Knight to be released today. The single is part of the Artist’s new album entitled “Fossora”, set for release September 30th via One Little Independent Records. This occasion continues the creative dialogue between Björk and Alessandro Michele following the co-direction of the Artist’s music video for ‘The Gate’ back in 2017. For “Ovule”, Gucci’s Creative Director created two one-of-a-kind stage costumes, inspired by the intensity of the music and the eclectic vision of the video. To celebrate the artistry and the mastery implied in the creation of the dresses, today Gucci releases a special “making of” video to unveil the sartorial process and the secret magic behind it. The film, directed by Tommaso Arnaldi, showcases the House’s artisans applying hand embroidered sequin fringes and crystalline edgings to one of the custom gowns. Frames casts a light on all the small details and gestures that reflect the dedication and care this elaborated manual skill requires and culminates in the reveal of the dress in its entirety; majestic and powerful as the music it was inspired by. My potential to be an artist was later confirmed when in the eleventh grade, my teacher placed me in the advanced art program after I showed her my sketch book. That opportunity heightened my exposure to artistic skills and discipline and deepened my resolve to develop my talent. As a Fine Art major at Florida A&M University, I gained an appreciation for brush strokes, watercolors and photography, all of which influence the paintings I create now. My preferred subject is painting portraits in watercolor, especially of the Black woman as a creator and caretaker. My observations of everyday life inspire the subjects I create and paint. A stunning smile here, a braided hairstyle there, a glance at the joy or sadness on the face of a child—each scene is different and looked at through multiple lenses. With my art, I seek to emphasize the connection between Mother Nature and divine feminine to the tangible reality of daily life. I have been painting and drawing since early childhood and my study of art is never ending. Oil is my preferred medium. My artwork spans the styles of expressionism, the abstract, and my version of cubism, which I have termed “whimsical abstract.” I also love portraiture and creating murals. As a visual artist I am greatly influenced by architectural structures, music, and musical instruments. I am deeply connected to my African roots through its rich history and its culture of sculpture, artifacts, and design motifs. I often incorporate these elements into my artwork. I am also a muralist, preferring private installations. My current work, as always, is consistent with my love for vibrant color, organic elements, and compositions that require emotion-stirring thought. • Charlotte McKinney: The Model-Actress Shares What Keeps Her Grounded

“In 2020, I learned to focus on my mental health and happiness,” says Charlotte McKinney. “My goal for this year is to maintain prioritizing happiness and continue working on my craft of acting and modeling.” The Orlando, Florida native started out as a Guess model. Then, fast food chain Carl’s Jr. gave Charlotte her big break when they featured her in their salacious 2015 Super Bowl XLIX commercial. The blonde bombshell struts through a busy farmer’s market passing by strategically placed fruit and such, suggesting that she is au natural. The commercial reveals that she’s sporting a tiny bikini top and shorts. Charlotte gazes into the camera, then takes a big bite out of Carl’s Jr.’s juicy All-Natural Burger. “I am always thankful to the Carl’s Jr. team for selecting me to star in the infamous Super Bowl commercial,” says Charlotte. People would be surprised to find out that… (fill in the blank): I’m extremely introverted and always enjoy my alone time. A natural in front of the camera, Charlotte has loved entertaining ever since she was a child. “My sister and I always loved to perform and dance as kids.” When Charlotte first started out, she didn’t know anyone in the entertainment industry, which only motivated her to work harder and to rely on herself. “I’m so thankful to my amazing parents, who supported my pursuit into modeling and consequently acting too.” The 27-year-old has been acting since 2006. In the last few years, she has appeared in TV shows and films, including Baywatch (2017) and Fantasy Island (2020). This February, I caught up with the Los Angeles resident, who has been working on a few collaborations and staying active with hot yoga sessions, long walks and at-home Pilates sessions. “A workout gets my endorphins going and puts me in a good mood for the day. Working out is such a large part of my physical and mental health.” How are things on the west coast? What’s your daily routine like? Things in L.A. have been pretty rough and extremely scary for a while now thanks to COVID-19. Early February, we saw things beginning to reopen, but I’m remaining super cautious and I stay home as much as I can, only going out for essentials. As for my daily routine, I wake up, drink water, get my sweat on with a workout, then jump into work emails and calls, work on audition self-tapes. And very occasionally, I’ll be on set, if necessary, for work. I finish most days on my couch with a glass of Dry Farm’s red wine. I’ve added wine connoisseur to my resume since the pandemic started. What’s a common misconception people have of you? Oh boy, there is a lot. I guess I have to say the “dumb blonde.” It’s funny when people actually get to know me, they are surprised when they realize I have interests, intelligence, personality and can have a laugh, even at myself. What projects are you working on right now? It’s been a busy start to the year, so I’m counting my blessings. Late January, my collaboration with The Good Chocolate was released. The Detox Bar is a delicious and nutritious chocolate bar made up of 65% dark zero sugar chocolate with coconut and turmeric. For Valentine’s Day this year, I partnered up with Canadian brand La Senza to curate a lingerie collection that’s perfect for your special day with a loved one. And in the coming weeks, I’m super excited to collaborate with Bala Bangles on a really fun and creative campaign and new color range of their popular fitness accessories. What was it like collaborating on a new lingerie line? How did that come about? My mother is from Canada, so La Senza was a brand I was very familiar with growing up. They reached out in regards to a collaboration for Valentine’s Day and I thought it would be fun. I really enjoy collaborations where I join forces with another team and we share our ideas and bring them to life. How do you stay grounded/sane in 2021? What keeps you at peace? I take everything day by day, and stick to my routine, which helps me stay focused and grounded. I wake up, drink water and make myself a coffee before I even open my emails and Instagram on my phone. Then, I get my sweat on with a workout. Lately, I’ve been taking private hot yoga sessions at Sweat Yoga and I walk out feeling incredible. And I thank technology, namely, Facetime more than ever, as I Facetime my family often. I chat with my mom in Florida every day and she always puts me at ease. “I’m lucky to live by the beach, whenever I’m by the water I have a feeling of peace.” What are you looking forward to this year? Hopefully, we can go back to traveling soon. I can’t wait to see my family in the Bahamas --this is the longest I’ve gone without seeing them. What are you watching on TV? Any good documentaries, auto-biographies. I’ve always preferred non-fiction films, TV and books. True crime is my guilty pleasure though; I just finished watching the Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer on Netflix and it was insane —a must watch! You’re a Florida native, when you’re in Miami, what are some of your favorite places to visit? Oh, I love a good Miami weekend with girlfriends and can’t wait to get back! I always stay at The Edition Hotel. Dinner at Milos and Casa Tua are a must. Dr. Smood for juice and coffee. And I’m obsessed with a good facial at Gee Beauty.
