- How to Live a Low Waste & Eco-Friendlier Lifestyle – and How You Can Do It
For about a year now, I have become more aware of the huge impact that one family can have on the world, in terms of waste and carbon emissions, and I have been determined to reduce mine as much as possible. After my first year studying Biology at university, I suddenly thought to myself that things had to change. Looking back on it, I feels as though I had an epiphany of some sorts which made me think about the items I threw “away”, and that my eating meat (which almost seems unreal to me now) was having a detrimental effect on the planet and the animals which I had deluded myself about. I slowly started introducing ideas of ways to be eco-friendlier to my family, which thankfully, they were happy to adopt after learning more about the problems we face. “Every time you spend money, you’re casting a vote for the kind of world you want” (Anna Lappé). I always think about this quote when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint, switching to zero waste alternatives, buying ethical clothes and consuming food. It is an incredible thought, that we, as consumers, have the power to change what huge corporations sell and advertise. If no one wanted beef, the supermarkets wouldn’t sell it. We have so much power to influence the world’s problems and yet, one of the main excuses for not changing your lifestyle is “but what can one person do, really?” I used to think this. I used to think that what I did didn’t matter unless I had an army of people behind me doing the same thing. But having introduced countless changes to my family and friends, I now know that is far from the truth. From changing to bamboo toothbrushes, I will prevent hundreds of plastic one’s going into the sea or landfill in my lifetime. From changing from cling film and foil to wax wraps, I have reduced the demand for those products (as even one person buys things regularly), prevented more plastic from entering oceans and prevented the need for making and then recycling the foil. Too often we think that if something is recyclable, the product is ‘environmentally friendly’. This couldn’t be more wrong. Aluminum is completely recyclable, however, when it goes to the recycling centers they often don’t accept it because it has been contaminated with the food it was used to protect, and therefore ends up in a landfill. The production of aluminum also produces perfluorocarbons, which are greenhouse gases much more potent (successful at trapping heat) than carbon dioxide. By buying reusable mesh fruit and vegetable bags, I no longer need to use the plastic bags they provide at the supermarket. Whilst you might look at those bags and think they aren’t too bad, because they say “100% biodegradable”, I would urge you to think again. Unless it tells you the duration of the time it takes to biodegrade, I wouldn’t trust this claim. It could take those bags years or even decades to actually, fully biodegrade, which is not what you think you are supporting when you choose to use those bags. There are countless other products that I have stopped buying and replaced with reusable and eco-friendly alternatives. These include zero-waste deodorant, reusable makeup wipes, reusable pads, zero waste natural toothpaste, shampoo bars, reusable wax wraps, and sandwich cloths, as well as buying all my dry food such as pasta, rice, oats and lentils from refill stations. All of these purchases have been more expensive than their disposable counterparts, and this is something that is controversial. For me, these products I have just listed should be more expensive. They are items that you can use over and over again, therefore have a longer lifetime than their one-use equivalents. But whilst they are more expensive in the short term, over the years and decades, you will spend so much less money on reusable items than disposable ones. This is something that people may choose not to believe, instead of thinking in the moment that cling film is infinitely cheaper than wax wraps, and foil is much cheaper than a sandwich wrap. That may be true, but the cheapness of the item comes at a different price, which is the huge carbon footprint they have and the possibility of these items ending up in the oceans, killing sea life or birds. Personally, I would much rather pay more for an item I can keep for years, knowing I am not harming anything. But this is a topic that many people cannot/refuse to think about in the moment, but hopefully, if you’ve read this, it might change your mind. Now, after talking about how some items should be more expensive, I can now talk about the items that definitely should not be more expensive than less eco-friendly alternatives. Supermarkets claim that they are doing all they can to reduce their plastic consumption. They’ve stopped providing plastic bags, they’ve added more loose fruit and vegetables, and claimed to have made a huge impact already. All these things are a great step, but the change that really needs to happen is the price. Loose fruit and vegetables are a lot more expensive than ones wrapped in plastic, and this to me makes absolutely no sense. This is why many of my university friends cannot go plastic-free, even though they might want to. A 3 pack of peppers cost a bit over a dollar, whereas buying three individually costs around $1.50. This is the reason why so many students, adults, and families choose not to go plastic-free, and it needs to be changed. If this resonates with you, email your supermarket right now! Demand that they change the prices of items so that you can buy your food shopping plastic-free. It isn’t fair that going plastic-free has everything to do with how much money you have. Just like everything else the public has been demanding, supermarkets will have to change if enough people complain. That is how the world works! So, if you want to go plastic-free but don’t have the capacity to right now, then take it into your own hands and email your supermarket. From this article, I hope I will have inspired readers to change their consumption habits. I haven’t even touched on topics such as fast fashion and the meat and dairy industries, but those need a separate article! But from talking about zero waste, hopefully, I have convinced some people of the importance of trying. You might not be able to do everything, but that’s no excuse to give up or revert back. It is almost impossible in today’s society to go fully plastic free, which is something you have to accept when trying to reduce your plastic intake. Many products, unless you make it yourself, do not have zero waste alternatives, but as I said, you simply need to do all you can for the products you can, and it will make a huge difference. - How Little Richard Helped Launch the Beatles
“The Girl Can’t Help It” is a 1956 film by Frank Tashlin about a young woman, played by Jayne Mansfield, who dreams of being a star vocalist. Some consider it the first rock ‘n’ roll music video ever made; built into the story line were full versions of song performances by Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. But Little Richard’s music was the star of the show – so much so that his song “The Girl Can’t Help It” became the movie’s title. At a small Liverpool movie theater, a 14-year-old Paul McCartney watched the hit film, mesmerized by the energy, talent and charisma of Little Richard, who had a cameo performing “Ready Teddy.” Little Richard performing ‘Ready Teady’ in ‘The Girl Can’t Help It.’ While Little Richard certainly left an impression on the talented young McCartney, he couldn’t have imagined that, in less than a decade, the two would take the stage together. Building towards the big moment A year later, McCartney met John Lennon, who was performing with his band in the back of a churchyard. The two quickly learned that they shared a love of American rock ‘n’ roll, and both were big fans of “The Girl Can’t Help It.” McCartney’s audition for Lennon even included a rendition of Eddie Cochran’s “20 Flight Rock” from the movie. Lennon asked him to join the band. The two started practicing together and dabbled in songwriting. When penning tunes, McCartney and Lennon often borrowed a formula that Little Richard had made his trademark: three chords played with a contagious, driving rhythm and blues feel. George Harrison joined them, along with Lennon’s art school buddy, Stuart Sutcliffe. They started performing together in Liverpool at venues like the Jacaranda and the famed Cavern Club. Staples of their sets included covers of the Little Richard classics “Long Tall Sally” and “Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey.” As their popularity grew, they were invited to perform residencies as the house band at the Indra and Kaiserkeller clubs in Hamburg, Germany. Playing every night allowed them to hone their live chops; by the time they returned to Liverpool and the Cavern Club, they were seasoned performers, and the crowds at their shows swelled. The next year, they toured the U.K. with Roy Orbison and Del Shannon. And then the group got their biggest break yet: They were asked to be the opening act for Little Richard at the brand new Star-Club in Hamburg in late 1962 for 14 shows. Little Richard was riding high. From 1956 to 1959, he scored 18 hit singles with his unique combination of wailing vocals, energetic piano playing and flamboyant style. Not only did McCartney and Lennon get to meet their idol, but they also got to observe and spend time with Little Richard backstage. Little Richard would later recall helping McCartney hone his vocal style in the green room. And once their residency in Hamburg concluded, Little Richard joined the group in Liverpool to see them perform at the Cavern Club. He got a glimpse of what was to come; impressed by the group’s energy, he foresaw success for the band in America. Sticking with what Richard did best When the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein secured them their first audition with Decca Records in early 1963, Epstein decided that the band should play a set list that sounded more refined than the tracks the group had performed in Hamburg. So in front of studio executives, the group played “Three Cool Cats,” “Besame Mucho” and “The Sheik of Araby.” There’s a reason you might not recognize these songs. The record company wasn’t impressed and decided against signing the band. When another opportunity presented itself to audition for George Martin and the Parlaphone label, the band didn’t make the same mistake twice: They returned to the hard-driving Little Richard-style rhythm and blues that they had mastered under his tutelage in Hamburg. They were offered a contract, provided they find a better drummer–which is where Ringo Starr enters the story. In late 1963 the group recorded their first album, “Please, Please Me,” in 10 hours over the course of one day. It was basically their live show from the Star-Club. Tracks like “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Please, Please Me” and the album’s final song, “Twist and Shout,” borrowed heavily from the style of Richard. On the album, Lennon’s voice is noticeably harsh; it sounds raw and edgy – just like the man they had been studying in Germany. A few months after this recording session, the group famously appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, which catapulted them to international stardom. The rest is history. - Parmigiani Fleurier Introduces “Helping Heroes” Program
During these incredibly challenging and unprecedented times, Parmigiani Fleurier launched its “Helping Heroes” program in North America, a unique initiative designed to support the healthcare institutions fighting the virus across the country, as well as the independent retailers who have had to shutter their doors. DATE: Thursday, May 7, 2020 -Tuesday, June 30, 2020 TIME: Online In order to help retailers including our Miami Design District boutique, Parmigiani Fleurier implemented a temporary e-commerce platform for the United States and Canada. This program enables jewelers working from home to source watches for their clients and gives buyers the ability to make a purchase from the safety of their home, while shifting the responsibility of product availability, shipments and other logistics to the Parmigiani Fleurier team. During the check-out process, you may select a retailer to support, and the sale of the watch is then credited to that retailer. If you skip the selection, credit for the sale reverts to the retailer closest to the delivery location. Additionally, the program supports retailers’ sales teams working from home through increased sales commissions while also offering you additional benefits, like a complimentary strap with purchase and complimentary scheduled maintenance service at the 3rd and 6th year of ownership with code HelpingHeroes. - Phantoms Pay Special Musical Tribute to Aaliyah
Los Angeles-based electronic duo Phantoms (aka Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola) share their cover of the Aaliyah classic “One In A Million.” Phantoms comment on the tribute, "We’re both big fans of Aaliyah and when we re-listened to her song “One In a Million” we thought it would be fun to try to repurpose it as a house vocal. It surprised us how anthemic it sounded when it was put on top of these big chords - you just felt like you had to sing along. It’s really an honor to be putting out a single with that vocal part and it’s always a highlight of our sets when we get to play it live." “One In A Million” arrives hot on the heels of the group’s 2019 critically acclaimed Disconnect EP. Racking up over 20 million streams and receiving nods from Billboard,Dancing Astronaut, EDM Identity, and more, they supported the release with sold-out shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Phoenix, and Dallas on the Disconnect Tour. Meanwhile, they graced the festival stages of Life Is Beautiful, Okeechobee, EDCMexico, and Voodoo Music + More, to name a few. The project also boasted the lead single “Say It” [feat. Anna Clendening], which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Top Electronic Songs Chart and reached #1 on US Dance Radio. Phantoms have recently kept busy by cooking up much-anticipated remixes for Tiësto and Becky Hill as well as SACHI and Jai Wolf. In 2018, Phantoms released the much buzzed about “Lay With Me” feat. Vanessa Hudgens, which has amassed over 11 million combined streams to date. The success of “Lay With Me” followed their chart topping “Just A Feeling” [feat. VÉRITÉ] from the duo's self-titled debut, Phantoms out via Casablanca Records / Republic Records. “Just A Feeling” clinched the #1 spot on the Sirius/XM BPM Top 20 Countdown for over eight weeks and shattered the previous record in the process. It closed out 2017 as #1 on the Countdown and BPM’s “Breaker of the Year.” The single held the #1 spot at Dance Radio for 4 straight weeks in addition to peaking at #1 on the iTunes Top Electronic Songs Chart and clearing over 15 million combined streams to date. Phantoms have played Firefly Festival, Electric Forest, SnowGlobe, ULTRA, and Billboard Hot 100 Festival in addition to touching down in Japan. Applauded by NPR, Billboard, Dancing Astronaut, and more, Phantoms have cemented their status as electronic music’s hottest live act. By Miami Living Staff, Images by Republic Records
- Tyler Cameron Talks Sexting, Gigi Hadid's Pregnancy, a Potential Stint on The Bachelor & More
Tyler Cameron stopped by Daily Pop to chat with E!'s Erin Lim about everything from his relationship with former Bachelorette Hannah Brown to the newly launched Quibi show Barkitecture, which he hosted. As for his experience with the latter, Tyler said he loved it so much that he'd "probably rather hang out with a bunch of dogs and do a season two" rather than become the next Bachelor. That, and the notion that his "heart wouldn't be in it." "Who knows? I'll never say never," Tyler said of the prospect. "But I think I'm at the point of my life where there's things I need to focus on for myself and get to where I need to be before I can give myself to somebody." Does the apply to Hannah, as well? The two have reunited a few times since she sent him home on The Bachelorette; namely while quarantined with a group of people in Florida amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, according to Tyler, she's currently just "a great friend. "I'm glad we could put our past behind us and [be] able to hang out and enjoy that time together," Tyler, who recently lost his mother, told Erin. "We both were kind of going through some things when all that occurred, and so, to be each other's support was nice. And to have a good friend like that was great." He continued, "The future? I don't know. I have no idea what the future holds. I'm just glad I have a great friend again." But Hannah isn't the only woman Tyler's been linked to in the past year or so. After his stint on The Bachelorette, rumors swirled about a possible romance with Gigi Hadid. The two reportedly went their separate ways in the fall of 2019, and she's since announced that she's expecting a child with her longtime on-again/off-again boyfriend Zayn Malik. "I'm excited for her and I wish her nothing but the best," Tyler said on Daily Pop. "She's gonna be the most incredible mom." And even if he's not ready for a serious relationship right now, Tyler still played a fun game of dating dos and don'ts with Erin—one of which is quarantine-specific: sliding into the DMs! "In quarantine, it's a do. Because there's no other way to communicate right now," Tyler said. "So, go for it. I'd rather meet you in person but DMs are fine." Anyone who manages to get a response, whether online or in-person, should probably avoid playing hard to get. Tyler dubbed this a "don't!" "It's fun, for a little bit. But I'm not in the business of playing games," he explained. "It'll get old quick. I'd rather you be real." More dating no-nos for Tyler? Talking about an ex, or bringing up the idea of kids before the cocktails even come out. He is down for kissing on the first date, though! Even bolder, Tyler said he's not opposed to sexting, whether it's in the early stages of a relationship or not. "That might push things a little quick. But that'll tell you where she's at and what she's looking for in a relationship," he explained. "Uh, why not? Go for it. Do. Sure." "Let's get it hot!" Tyler added. - Miami Prepares to Reopen on May 18th with Pending Approval
Miami-Dade prepares to reopen with a Phase I policy on Monday, May 18, 2020. A New Normal Guide has been prepared and submitted to Governor Ron DeSantis for the state's review. If Governor DeSantis approves the plan, certain non-essential businesses will be allowed to reopen with stringent capacity and safety rules in place. This planning was done in close consultation with medical and industry experts and government partners, and is laid out in detail in the guide. This information is being provided preliminarily to help businesses and residents plan ahead, but there could still be revisions as we clarify in greater detail what can and cannot open and what services can and cannot be provided. The draft guide includes specific industry protocols for Retail, Small Businesses, Personal Grooming Businesses, Arts and Culture, Manufacturing, Office Buildings and Shopping Centers, Warehousing/Trade and Logistics, and Restaurants. It also includes protocols for hotels, motels and other commercial lodging establishments. In addition, it specifies that the following will NOT be opening at this time, but at a future date, when conditions warrant: bars, pubs, night clubs, banquet halls, cocktail lounges, cabarets, and breweries; movie theaters, concert houses, auditoriums, playhouses, bowling alleys, arcades, gymnasiums and fitness studios; pools, hot tubs and fitness centers, gymnasiums, whether of a commercial or non-commercial nature; tattoo shops and massage parlors. All of the Working Groups’ recommendations have been approved by doctors and medical experts from the Florida Department of Health, Jackson Health System, U-Health, and the infectious disease experts at Florida International University and the University of Miami. Medical experts have been involved every step of the way in this process, which also included input from the Miami-Dade League of Cities. The guide, which includes a color-coded system that details when openings can occur can be downloaded here. By Miami Living Staff, Miami-Dade Gov.
- PGA Tour to Return with New Safety Measures
With the Charles Schwab Challenge, scheduled for June 11-14 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, the PGA TOUR is set to lead the way as professional sports begin to emerge from a nearly three-month quarantine amid the coronavirus pandemic. As to how it will do that, the answer is very carefully. “It's really a layered approach that we've taken, and the heart of it is social distancing,” the TOUR’s Senior Vice President and Chief of Operations Tyler Dennis told reporters Wednesday on a call that also included Chief Tournaments and Competitions Officer Andy Pazder and Senior Vice President of Tournament Administration Andy Levinson. That layered approach will include plenty of testing. Players and caddies will be expected to comply with medical questionnaires, thermal (temperature) readings and RT-PCR nasal swabs. It will start before they travel to tournaments and continue when they arrive. “We’re excited about how the PGA TOUR can play a role here in the world's return, if you will, to enjoying things we love and doing so in a responsible manner,” Dennis said. Pazder concurred, calling this moment “a unique opportunity” to lead the way. Players such as Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Brendon Todd have said they’re in and will do whatever is needed to return to competition. All three will be in action at Colonial, and McIlroy has said he’ll play the first three tournaments back, which will also include the RBC Heritage (South Carolina) and Travelers Championship (Connecticut). (For more on McIlroy’s schedule, click here.) Asked this week if he had any reservations, McIlroy said, “I don’t think so. If you take necessary precautions … face cover … washing hands … practicing social distancing, I really do think it is possible. If everyone follows guidelines, I don’t see why it’s not possible. Will be comfortable with logistics. I feel comfortable getting back out there.” Specifics were outlined in a document sent to players Tuesday. The plan was two months in the making and formed with input from PGA TOUR medical adviser Dr. Tom Hospel and the Federal Coronavirus Task Force, plus other specialists and laboratory directors, and in consultation with other professional sports leagues. The TOUR will provide masks and sanitizer at tournament sites, part of a significantly enhanced disinfectant and hygiene program. The number of people allowed inside any structure concurrently will be monitored and restricted. Most important will be a comprehensive testing and screening program that seeks to protect all involved. “For the player and caddie group,” Levinson said, “we are going to be providing that group with a pre‑travel testing program, and the purpose of this is really for those individuals to understand whether or not they have the virus before they travel to a tournament market. “And then upon arrival,” he added, “everyone will report to a testing area, likely at a designated hotel, where they will undergo all three screening methods: The questionnaire, thermal reading, and a PCR test. … Everybody who comes on‑site at our events will have to go through a questionnaire and thermal screening before entering the property, and participation is a condition of competition.” Although the results of PCR tests can take up to three days or longer, Levinson said the TOUR is working with local laboratories in an effort to shave that waiting time down to “a matter of hours instead of a matter of days.” One caveat: It must be done without taking resources away from local communities. “We're actually studying this very carefully,” Dennis said, “and everything we've designed is being done in a way that does not do that.” Anyone who presents with an elevated temperature will consult with a tournament physician, and in certain cases go from there to COVID-19 testing. “In the event we have a positive test,” Levinson said, “we will comply with all local health authorities as well as CDC guidelines, and that would include isolating that individual and may require a period of isolation or an extended time.” The TOUR will support players with specialized medical care and supplies throughout the isolation period, he said, “and any player or caddie who were to test positive during an event would receive a stipend associated with the cost of that isolation period.” Healthy players and caddies will have access to chartered jets between tournament sites. With the TOUR’s relaunch a month away, it’s all about minimizing risk. Levinson freely admits there is no way to eradicate that risk completely, not yet, but as the players and caddies know best, with the toughest recovery shots there never is. Courtesy of PGA Tour. - 4th Session at La Maison des Startups LVMH Kicks Off Online
With teleworking the new normal, teams at La Maison des Startups LVMH, the Group’s incubator at the Station F campus, have reinvented standard practices. On April 21 the program welcomed a fourth group of 25 new startups online. Adapting this key event on the LVMH innovation agenda, which generally takes place face-to-face, the program segued to online alternatives to let the startups introduce themselves and begin their first coaching sessions. Innovation is deeply embedded in the DNA of the LVMH Group, distinctively shaping its long-term success. One of the pillars of this strategy is La Maison des Startups LVMH, the Group’s incubator at Station F in Paris, the world’s largest startup campus. Launched in 2017, the initiative accelerates cross-fertilization between the worlds of tech and luxury to help them together create the customer experience of tomorrow. Every six months the program welcomes 25 new startups to its space at Station F to mentor them and deepen their collaboration with LVMH Maisons. With France in lockdown since March 17 and the Station F campus closed, La Maison des Startups LVMH realigned its agenda. Demonstration sessions, which numerous LVMH teams around the world watched last year, were transformed into a series of e-workshops addressing business issues created by the coronavirus crisis, drawing a large audience among LVMH staff from 16 countries. On April 21 La Maison des Startups LVMH welcomed a new cohort of 25 startups that were introduced to the Group during a special webinar on May 7. The first few months of support will also take place exclusively online, along with initial contacts with LVMH’s 75 Maisons. This adjustment was enthusiastically welcomed by the startups. “Everything looks very promising and ambitious. We’ve already met with over a dozen Maisons, and LVMH teams are completely available to help us better understand the different contexts and issues faced by individual Maisons and the Group in general,” says Olivier Cotinat, founder and CEO of Tapbuy, a startup specialized in mobile e-commerce interfaces. Despite the constraints created by Covid-19, the launch of this 4th session at La Maison des Startups LVMH definitely maintained a rapid pace. All the stakeholders view this period as an amazing source of opportunities. “Constraints are what drive innovation. Crises have always spawned giants and disruptive ideas. We’re in the midst of an absolute paroxysm of constraints and we’ll need to rethink our models to make them more sustainable and responsible,” Oliver Cotinat adds. Martin Lehec, Sales Director of the Urb-it high-end delivery service, concurs: “I’m convinced that this crisis is a tremendous opportunity. The uncertainties facing the world and the retail of tomorrow mean we need to totally rethink deliveries. We believe we have to go even further in redefining delivery as an extension of the in-store experience.” Courtesey of LVMH
