- Eugenia Kuzmina: Life as a Russian-American Actress, Model, and Comedian in Miami
Eugenia Kuzmina is a multi-talented Russian-American actress, comedian, and model whose journey to success was inspired by her challenging upbringing. In an interview with Miami Living Magazine’s publisher Markin Abras, Eugenia shares her inspirations and connections to the city of Miami. Blouse by Woolford, brooch by Chanel, hat by Lack of Color, scarf by Hermes, skirt by L’agance, shoes by Tamara Mellon Born to a renowned nuclear physicist father and a former scientist turned housewife mother, Eugenia discovered her passion for performing at a young age. At just 13 years old, she was handpicked from her school to appear in a Russian version of “SNL” called “Eralash.” Despite visa issues that prevented her from appearing in a Chuck Norris film, her commercials for top brands like Coca-Cola, L’Oréal, and Wrigleys in Moscow caught the eye of a scout at Nathalie Models Europe, leading to a contract and a move to Paris at 15. There, she modeled for top brands such as Cartier, Dior, Armani, Hermes, and Vogue. Eugenia’s career took off when her contract was signed by Ford Models and IMG, who brought her to the United States. She was soon cast in Rodrigo Prieto’s directorial debut “Likeness” opposite Elle Fanning, which was well-received at the Tribeca Film Festival. This opened doors for her to appear in films like “Rock The Kasbah,” “Bad Moms,” and Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentlemen.” Her television credits include “Spy City,” “True Blood,” “New Girl,” “Castle,” “The Comeback,” and “Tour De Pharmacy.” Eugenia’s passion for comedy shines through in her regular stand-up performances at The Comedy Store and The Laugh Factory. In her free time, she enjoys motorcycles, doing her own stunts, speaking multiple languages, and supporting environmental causes globally. Eugenia currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Bill Block, the CEO of Miramax, and their three children. Markin Abras: What inspires you about Miami and how has it influenced your career? Eugenia Kuzmina: Miami is like a luxurious, sensual perfume to me. The city exudes lush colors, a laid-back timeless style, and a tropical allure. I’ve been fortunate enough to shoot editorials for top magazines such as Elle, Glamour, and Marie Claire, as well as campaigns for Neiman Marcus and bikini brands from Brazil. Additionally, I’ve performed stand-up comedy during Swim Fashion Week, with a Lamborghini champagne backdrop - it was a dream come true! I was able to combine my love for modeling and performing, and we even enjoyed a glass of champagne while taking pictures on a boat the next day. Abras: How does your experience in Miami differ from other cities you’ve worked in? Kuzmina: My first job in Miami was for Elle UK, and I have my agent, Luiz Mattos, to thank for my US career. He knew how much I loved to travel, and I remember stepping out of Miami airport for the first time and feeling so relaxed. The warm, tropical air was a stark contrast to the freezing Siberian nights I was used to. In Miami, there’s a sense that nothing is rushed and everything gets done. As a model, I’ve shot in challenging weather conditions, but Miami is always a fun and enjoyable experience. The ocean water is warm and inviting, and I always feel welcomed by the people I work with. There’s always an invitation to a party or community event in the evening. Abras: How does Miami’s cultural diversity impact your creative process and artistic vision? Kuzmina: Miami is incredibly culturally diverse, and I love the Cuban influence. It brings me back to my roots growing up in post-Soviet Russia and connects me to South American culture through architecture and food. I was invited to perform stand-up comedy during Art Basel a few years ago and was fascinated by the crowd’s reaction to the famous “The Comedian” banana piece by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Doing comedy about the piece was a highlight for me. Growing up, I was a huge fan of Miami Vice and loved sneaking peeks at Hollywood films when I was a kid. Abras: Can you tell us about any exciting projects you have coming up in Miami? Kuzmina: Next month, my 14-year-old son is moving to Florida to attend IMG Academy and train as a professional tennis player, and I’ll be visiting him every other month. I hope my visits will bring more opportunities for local film, TV, and commercial work. Last summer, I spent time at IMG Academy and fell in love with golf. I’ve had the idea to co-design a women’s golf wear line for a younger generation who are taking up the sport. I’ve also created a comedy show, “Models of Comedy,” with other model-comedians, and I hope to bring it to Miami soon. Abras: As a multi-talented actress, model, and comedian, how do you manage to balance and integrate these aspects of your career? Kuzmina: I am constantly inspired to learn and grow as a person. My father, a nuclear scientist, instilled in me a thirst for knowledge and a desire to never be confined to one specific area. My career as a model has opened many doors for me and allowed me to travel and learn about different cultures, people, and communities. Acting allows me to explore different lives and perspectives, while comedy provides me with a platform to express my own voice. Balancing these careers with parenting can be challenging, but I’ve found that staying curious and sharing my experiences through my blog (www.modelmom.tv), my podcast (Modelmom on Spotify), and my book on Amazon helps me keep everything in perspective. Abras: How has your experience as a performer evolved since your first acting role? Kuzmina: My first American acting role was in the film “Likeness” alongside Elle Fanning, directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and nominated for the Tribeca Film Festival. The audition was unforgettable, as I was asked to delve into the dark and vulnerable side of being a model. Although playing a model was easy for me, acting requires a different set of skills and the courage to be fully seen. It took me some time to embrace this aspect of acting, but stand-up comedy has helped me break down the fourth wall and be more vulnerable in my performances. At this stage in my career, I am excited to play a diverse range of characters, beyond just stereotypical roles. Abras: Can you share with us some of the challenges you have faced in your career and how you have overcome them? Kuzmina: The entertainment industry can be a wild ride, with highs that soar and lows that can be incredibly tough. I was lucky enough to be scouted at the young age of 15 and brought to Paris, but it took me a while to get cast because I was a shy teenager who was also struggling with anorexia. Yves Saint Laurent gave me a chance to perform in a show with all the supermodels when I was on the brink of giving up on my modeling career. As a teenager, it can be difficult to have a healthy self-image and self-worth, especially when your value is based on your appearance. This is why I developed an alter ego for my modeling editorials. I approached each job as if I was playing a character, considering who she was, what her background was, and why she was wearing her clothes a certain way in a particular moment. Over time, I learned to place my value on my inner qualities, which ultimately attracted more clients to hire me. I also struggled with finding my voice and yearning to be heard. But when my therapist suggested I try singing, I did, and I ended up being hired for a TV show called “I Can See Your Voice.” Today, I am writing this from a movie set where I am playing a singer. I have had to overcome many obstacles in my career, including being told I would never be able to leave Russia, or that I was too old at 23 to start acting. I also faced limitations like being told that pretty women can’t be funny. But I learned to not react to these limitations and to just keep working and being of service. Abras: Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring actors and entertainers in Miami who are looking to make a name for themselves in the industry? Kuzmina: My advice would be to have something unique to offer, a skill or talent that sets you apart. It’s also important to understand your market and your marketing strategy. Have a pitch deck presentation ready to help your agents sell you, and know when to say no to work that doesn’t align with your values. Cultivate your uniqueness, and don’t be afraid to showcase what makes you different. - Living The Boating Life with First Mariners Club
If you live in South Florida, you understand that boating is a way of life. Like many of us, you probably watch from the shore as others blissfully float by, enjoying the sun and sea, and wondering what amazing destinations they are off to. You find yourself daydreaming about, someday, being at the helm of your own yacht, enjoying days on the water with friends and family. That dream quickly fades when you start thinking about the practicality, expense and hassle of actually owning a floating toy that may cost more than a home. In searching for options, you find that typical boat clubs don’t offer the kind of quality vessels you’re looking for and chartering a yacht can cost you thousands of dollars, just for a day. This was the quandary that First Mariners Club founders Anne-Lise and Kevin Dorry faced when they moved to Miami. “When we moved to Miami we knew we wanted a boat, but were looking for alternatives to actually buying one.” said Kevin. “Having owned boats in the past we understood that the joy of boating can quickly turn into an expensive headache. When you factor in the cost of the vessel, dockage, repair, and general maintenance, the numbers can add up quickly. In addition, dealing with maintenance, insurance, paperwork, cleaning, and so on is not only time-consuming, it is often an aggravation. Pair that with the fact that most people don’t use their boat nearly as often as they think they will and you start to see the realities of boat ownership.” Unable to find what they were looking for, the couple hit on an idea: Why not create the kind of boating experience they were looking for but couldn’t find? Create an exclusive club offering white-glove service and a carefree experience bringing a sense of effortless luxury to boating. Their members experience the closest thing to owning a boat, without actually buying one. Out of this idea, First Mariners Club was born. THE CLOSEST THING TO OWNING A BOAT OF YOUR OWN... WITHOUT THE HARD WORK AND MASSIVE EXPENSE First Mariners Club is based on the idea of giving a very limited number of members access to new or late model, club-owned, stylish yachts that they may use by themselves or with a captain. Club vessels are selected to be of the highest quality and must be head-turners. First Mariners Club handles maintenance, dockage, cleaning and all of the other headaches of boat ownership, leaving their members with none of the work and only one thing to do: enjoy their days on the water. A TRULY HASSLE-FREE BOATING EXPERIENCE Imagine showing up to a clean, beautiful yacht, fully stocked with snacks, drinks, sunscreen, towels, and toys, jumping on board and venturing off for a day on the water. Then, upon your return, just hopping off and heading home. First Mariners Club handles everything. The only thing you have to worry about is your next boating adventure. Have a question or special request? Just call or email your personal First Mariners Club Concierge to get help with destination recommendations, dock-and-dine reservations, catering requests, or anything else you might need. Click below to launch slideshow > LIMITED MEMBERSHIP, UNLIMITED JOY First Mariners Club is exclusive and limits their membership base so that each member has that true “boat owner” experience and feels they are part of something special. Unlike typical boat clubs, access to a club vessel or club event is rarely an issue. The proprietary, state-of-the-art reservation system makes booking a vessel childishly simple. The hardest thing members typically have to do is decide what bathing suit they’re going to wear. CLUB BENEFITS CONTINUE ON SHORE TOO Club membership comes with “on shore” activities as well. This includes exclusive wine tastings, member dining events, talks, get togethers, and more. Members are welcome to participate in these events or just spend their time on the water. The choice is theirs. It could be yours. CURIOUS? NiLuu’s coveted prints draw its inspiration from peace and harmony found in nature’s flora and fauna. “For the coming season I am very excited to introduce our first Spring/Summer Collection: “Hera.” For this collection I was inspired by ancient Greece and Olympias, the strong-willed mother of Alexander the Great. I wanted to deliver a modern take on traditional designs with one shoulder dresses, long cleavage tunic shirts, and deep slit pants - reimagining them into everyday pieces for confident and empowered women. Additionally, for the first time, we are introducing whites to our offering both with an exciting new print, the “Queen” adorned with exotic birds representing love, grace and freedom as well as “Magnolia”, a pure white with a rich Jacquard texture. We are complementing our color palette with a trend-setting bright orange, the “Tangerine”, and a lighter version of our signature fabric for the versatile “Noir” collection. Finally, we are also introducing “Cleo”, a seductive Python print representing Olympias and my love and admiration for serpents” – says Nilüfer Bracco, founder and creative director of niLuu. While continuing its commitment to eco-friendly practices, niLuu delivers vegan silk pieces that are sustainable, biodegradable, and 100% certified vegan thus combining the iconic elegance of traditional silk with a socially and environmentally ethical production process. - Comcast RISE Allows Pinecrest’s Meadow Collective To Further their Eco-Conscious Fashion Movement
Meadow Collective boutique founder, Meadow Gerrish talks benefits of receiving Comcast RISE grant, Costa Rica beginnings, and sustainable fashion. Meadow Gerrish has always dreamed of making her mark on the fashion world and bringing those around her along for the ride. She started her eco-conscious boutique, Meadow Collective, in 2005, but the journey didn’t always go as smoothly as she expected. “Becoming a shop owner was an evolution [that was] a little by accident. But nothing is really by accident, is it?” says Gerrish. In October 2022, Gerrish was forwarded an email with information on Comcast RISE, a program formed in late 2020 to give minority, small businesses owners the resources they need to survive and thrive through the COVID-19 pandemic. Comcast RISE, which stands for Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment, had already invested $1 million in small South Florida businesses in 2021 owned by people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Asian American owners. On the heels of its one year anniversary, Comcast RISE announced that they would be accepting applications again, in order to invest another $1 million in additional South Florida small businesses – now, including women-owned businesses. A month later, Gerrish was thrilled to be awarded a $10,000 grant. “I was like, ‘oh yes, perfect timing! I need this boost,’” says Gerrish, “The universe provides. You just have to go after things a little, work hard and stay consistent.” Thanks to Comcast RISE, Meadow Gerrish has been able to evolve her business and welcome more customers into her “collective.” Focusing on its eco-conscious mission, Meadow Collective began offering a permanent jewelry line. It has quickly become very popular and “a nice boost to overall sales,” according to Gerrish. She also used the money to expand and promote Meadow Collective’s online presence through advertising and social media. But before Meadow Collective began, Gerrish went to Miami International University of Art and Design knowing full well that she wanted to create a sustainable women’s line. Having always been eco-conscious, Gerrish was very aware of fashion’s waste problem and didn’t want her legacy to contribute to it. After graduating in 2005, she created her sustainable collection. It was produced locally in Hialeah. “Creating [my] eco collection was a compromise with my conscience that I could do something to contribute to change, as well as fulfill my creative needs for design,” she explained. While living between Miami and Pavones, Costa Rica with her husband and two small children, Gerrish opened up her first Meadow Collective storefront on the beach in Pavones. In addition to her eco collection, Gerrish also sold quality goods from sustainable artisans. In 2017, Gerrish and her family moved back to Miami. She closed her shop in Costa Rica and opened a Meadow Collective in Pinecrest, where she is still located today. And the shoppers haven’t stopped coming. “When I opened my shop in Miami, I already had a community of women who have been on my fashion journey with me for many years. The most important part of a successful business is your community. Without a community, you don’t have a business,” says Gerrish. Now in its 15th year, Meadow Collective is not only thriving as a fashion oasis, also turning customers into conscious consumers who want their quality purchases to make an impact. “We strongly believe every single thing we buy [showcases] the kind of future we want. We want a future where artists and designers are valued and paid well. We want to respect and preserve culture and the handcrafted lifestyle [and more],” says Gerrish. “We do believe that even our little shop can make a difference, especially in our local community. And we surely do make a difference in all the small business vendors we support.” Continuing to look to the future, Gerrish can’t wait for more people to join Meadow Collective’s boho-chic, eco-conscious movement. “The best thing about our customers is they are like our little family. We are so blessed with the coolest ladies in all of Miami - somehow they just find us! Our shop feels like a home, where you go to visit your super cool stylish friends and you can take things from their closet. And in today’s society, I think people just crave that real connection even more.” To learn more and see how Comcast RISE has benefited Meadow Collective, visit their website at www.meadowcollective.com and their shop at 8245 SW 124th St in Pinecrest. The total cost of the project is $13 million, and construction is expected to begin in 2023. Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade offers many positive programs at its six Clubs, including its mentoring, educational after-school programs, homework assistance and tutoring, computer training, social skills, dance, arts and crafts and summer and athletic programs, for area youth who need them the most.
