  • Chef José Andrés’ Zaytinya at The Ritz-Carlton South Beach

A renowned culinary concept is about to grace the vibrant shores of South Beach, and it goes by the name of Zaytinya. Nestled within the luxurious Ritz-Carlton, South Beach, this culinary masterpiece marks the eagerly anticipated return from globally renowned celebrity chef José Andrés to Miami, serving as the latest addition to the José Andrés Group – a culinary powerhouse known for its mission to “change the world through the power of food”. Chef José Andrés’ Zaytinya Concept Arrives to The South Beach Culinary Scene José Andrés’ Return to the Magic City: Distinguished Mediterranean Concept by the Celebrity Chef with Established Outposts in Washington, D.C. and New York, Expands Its Culinary Footprint to the Heart of Miami “Zaytinya is a celebration of the honest, delicious flavors of the Eastern Mediterranean that have inspired the world for centuries. We cannot wait to bring this food to South Beach!” says Chef José Andrés. At the heart of Zaytinya is a unique partnership between Chef José Andrés and Aglaia Kremezi, Zaytinya's Chef Partner. More than 15 years ago, their shared passion for authentic food gave birth to the concept of Zaytinya. Kremezi's wisdom and guidance have been instrumental in maintaining the menu's authenticity. Bringing the best of Turkey, Greece, and Lebanon together under one roof, Zaytinya’s menu reflects the rich regional diversity of these classic cuisines under the guidance of James Beard Award-winning chef José Andrés and concept chef Michael Costa. The restaurant presents a small-plate-dining-style menu rich in mezze spreads, including beloved favorites such as hommus, tzatziki, and baba ghannouge inviting diners to savor the authentic essence of the Mediterranean. A wide range of vegetables, meat, and seafood mezzes also adorn the menu with delicacies like octopus Santorini, chicken, lamb, and more. The beverage menu at Zaytinya South Beach is as carefully curated as the culinary offerings. Boasting an eclectic selection of unique wines from the Mediterranean and beyond, each sip is meticulously chosen by expert sommeliers to harmonize seamlessly with the mezze menu. Hand-crafted authentic Mediterranean cocktails boasting Greek gin and sweet and dry vermouths infused with lemon, lime and thyme, also feature for a truly immersive experience. Zaytinya, South Beach creates an atmosphere that effortlessly captures the spirit of the Eastern Mediterranean. The setting is a bustling, airy place, thoughtfully designed with a palette of warm bronze metals, white oak woods, and playful pops of blue, paying homage to the pristine waters of the Mediterranean islands. The Zaytinya brand – an iconic culinary institution in Washington, D.C. – recently expanded its footprint even further with the opening of its New York City location in 2022 at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad. Zaytinya’s third location marks the second collaboration between Flag Luxury Group and José Andrés Group on the heels of the approval of a plan to build a 15-story residential building on the property; a project that all three hotel ownership groups - Flag Luxury Group, Lionstone Development and Ben-Josef Group have been passionate about for many years. "Having a Greek Armenian Mother-in-Law, I appreciated the authenticity that Chef José Andrés brings to this cuisine. We knew after bringing Zaytinya to The Ritz Carlton New York, NoMad that we wanted our local South Beach community and guests of The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach to experience this beloved concept. It was a natural fit.” said Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, President of Flag Luxury Group. “Zaytinya’s energy is a celebration of diversity and different culinary traditions. “We could not be happier to return to South Beach with this concept!” added Sam Bakhshandehpour, President of José Andrés Group. “What you are about to experience is a journey between these two worlds, navigated with imagination and wonder by our team.” In October 2023, José Andrés Group assumed all food and beverage operations for The Ritz-Carlton South Beach, including Lapidus lobby bar, DiLlido Beach Club, in-room dining, banquet services, and the Ritz Club lounge. Zaytinya is located at the Ritz-Carlton, South Beach at 1 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. How heavy is the financial burden? The cost of making Miami your home extends far beyond the search for a cozy abode. It's a puzzle of various expenses — how much you'll shell out for transportation, food, other routine costs, and housing itself. Maintaining a lifestyle in Miami has demanded deeper pockets. Just over the past year, total expenses have increased by nearly 4%. According to data from Salary.com, the cost of life in Miami overshoots the American average by about 15.5%. It touches the price of more than just housing costs. Miami keeps drawing new people, thanks to its mix of Cuban culture, great art, delicious food, and top-notch hotels. • 5 Marketing Lessons From The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Romance

What happens when you unite the biggest pop star in the world and a two-time Super Bowl champion? A whole lot of excitement, as the romance of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce has shown. The stands at Kansas City Chiefs games look different than they used to. Kirill Kudryavtsev/AFP/Getty Images But amid all the cheering, canoodling, and Instagram flirting, the situation lends some useful insights into marketing – and as an expert in sports marketing, I know that this is a topic worth focusing on. Here are five lessons the NFL and other experiential marketers can consider to enhance their brands and reputation. 1) “Blank Space”: Embrace audience expansion “Cause you know I love the players … And you love the game!” – “Blank Space,” 2014 Great entertainment marketers know how to fill a blank space. Swift has given the NFL a unique opportunity to expand its appeal to a demographic – young women – that may not have been interested in football before. Swifties, as Swift’s fans are known, are eager to see the pop icon embrace being in love. So whenever she visits a stadium to cheer on her new lover, Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Kelce – which she has done four times in the past two months and may well do again soon – a media frenzy follows. While serious football fans want the focus to stay on football, the NFL is smart to capitalize on this opportunity. After all, Swift is a mega-popular star: She has more charted songs (212), top-10 hits (42), and No. 1 song debuts (five) on the Billboard Top 100 than any other female musician in history. The Chiefs remain known for their winning ways and star power, and they’re still drawing – and satisfying – their traditional fans. Yet Swift’s presence has brought a more playful tone to the games. The ordinarily serious Chiefs coach Andy Reid has taken to joking about the pair (“I set them up”), while memes about Swift having to leave the stadium in a popcorn machine are a next-level combination of participatory pop culture, celebrity, and sports. Audience expansion is an effective tactic for businesses, as long as marketers don’t alienate old fans by opening up to new ones. And so far, this is paying off for the NFL: Ratings soar when Swift attends a game, and Kelce jersey sales have also skyrocketed. This new interest in the sport is welcome, especially since NFL television ratings among 18- to 35-year-olds had previously shown some declines. Taylor Swift cheers from a suite with Travis Kelce’s mother, Donna Kelce, as the Kansas City Chiefs play the Chicago Bears on Sept. 24, 2023.Cooper Neill/Getty Images 2) “Wildest Dreams”: Capitalize on the many motivations for fandom “Say you’ll see me again/Even if it’s just in your wildest dreams.” – “Wildest Dreams,” 2014 An entertainment or sports marketer’s wildest dream is to be able to bring in all sorts of fans and deliver on their personal reasons for being there. That’s why marketers are wise to think about “psychographics” in addition to demographic appeals. This means that instead of just segmenting audiences by demographic – such as younger women or college students – marketers tailor their appeals to lifestyles, interests, activities, and the way consumers think. My co-authored research shows that engaged sports fans are motivated by psychological desires such as escape and building self-esteem – everyone wants to be associated with a winner – as well as social motives such as wanting to strengthen in-group bonds and participate in traditions and rituals. Football is known for intense strategies, masculine bravado, and violent hits. So the Swift crossover gives NFL sports marketers an opportunity to attract new fans with different motivations. A good example is when the NFL changed its X (formerly Twitter) bio to “NFL (Taylor’s version)” – a nod to Swiftie in-group identity and humor. New fans who are drawn in by such appeals may become more serious about the sport later. 3) “You Belong With Me”: Let consumers feel like they belong “If you could see that I’m the one who understands you, been here all along so, why can’t you see? You belong with me.” – “You Belong With Me,” 2008 When it comes to sports, and especially football, some people think that the game isn’t for them. The NFL and the Chiefs now have a unique opportunity to leverage sudden interest from a group of people not known for being football superfans. But to convert them into regular viewers, they’ll need to make sure the newcomers feel a sense of belonging. A subtle example of this sort of outreach happened when the Chiefs used social media to welcome Swift – and by extension, her loyal fans – to “Chiefs Kingdom.” Similarly, the league has made it abundantly clear that Swifties are welcome in the stands, even if a small yet loud cohort of NFL fans would rather they stay away. This open-mindedness is good for business. Kansas City Chiefs fans hold signs for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce during an NFL game on Oct. 22, 2023. Kara Durrette/Getty Images 4) “Love Story”: Leverage human co–branding and appeal to fun and fantasy “You’ll be the prince, and I’ll be the princess/It’s a love story, baby, just say yes.” – “Love Story,” 2008 I study human brands – the people, well-known or emerging, who are the subject of marketing, interpersonal or inter-organizational communications. In this age of social media, human branding has never been more important. Having a strong personal brand is associated with more endorsements, Google searches, merchandise sales, and ticket sales. So Swift and Kelce are reaping the benefits of human co-branding. What makes these particular human brands so compelling? Many Swifties are invested in Taylor’s romantic life and are cheering for her to find love and one day pick out a white dress. This interest and fantasy takes the form of a parasocial – or one-sided – relationship, where one party invests emotional energy and time, while the other person is unaware of the first person’s existence. While these can potentially become harmful, in most cases parasocial interactions are a source of escape, fun, and fantasy. In an era of negative news and doomscrolling, a story that’s fun and entertaining can be powerful. And research in our advertising and branding book shows that sports marketers are eager to capitalize on positive appeals. Stephen Maturen/Getty Images 5) “Exile”: Don’t just think locally “You’re not my homeland anymore/So what am I defending now?” – “Exile,” 2020 A final insight for brands and marketers is to not be constrained by geography. With digital commerce and social media, researchers have become increasingly interested in “faraway fans” who travel long distances to events. In a recent study about professional cycling fanship in sporting event sponsorship, my colleagues and I found that sports event attendees who traveled from farther away were more invested in the event and more willing to buy merchandise. This has big implications for new fans who may travel to Kansas City to catch a glimpse of Taylor Swift. The Swift/Kelce relationship and the NFL’s highlighting of it is one example of why it is important not to be hemmed in by geography. The sculptures are suggestive of living objects, mushrooming across the district. Collectively, they imagine a city where nature thrives peacefully and in harmony with our human presence.  Pieces include outdoor seating, tables, and oversized light sculptures, as well as a giant centerpiece egg-form, and 900 egg-shaped birdhouses dispersed throughout the trees. Bohinc’s pieces are made from cork and painted by hand in vibrant hues paying homage to Miami’s architectural color palette. Location: Miami Design District Dates: November 2023 - March 2024 CRAIG ROBINS COLLECTION “A TRAIN OF THOUGHTS” The Craig Robins Collection in Miami comprises over 1,300 pieces of contemporary art and innovative design and is exhibited within the Dacra headquarters in the Miami Design District. This year’s rehanging of the collection is titled “A Train of Thoughts”, focusing on two core subgroups of the collection’s holdings: figuration and conceptualism. The exhibition highlights a collecting history that has favored a taste for the abject and hyperbolic figurative image, in tandem with the self-reflexive, institutional critique of art based on ideas-- a seemingly incompatible pair that yields unexpected dialogues. Location: DACRA Headquarters, 3841 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, FL 33137 Dates: December 6-8 GAGOSIAN & JEFFREY DEITCH PRESENT ‘FORMS’ Forms will be the eighth annual group exhibition presented jointly by Jeffrey Deitch and Gagosian during Miami Art Week and on view in the city's Design District. The dominant narrative of modern art has largely focused on stylistic shifts between binary oppositions: from figuration to abstraction and back again. Playing on this history, the works included in Forms highlight, acknowledge, and challenge the pathway between abstraction and figuration with surrogates for and references to the representational world. Location: 35 NE 40th St., Miami, FL 33137 Dates: December 5 - 10 ERICK & ELLIOT JIMENEZ: RECLINING MERMAID ‘Reclining Mermaid’ is a site-specific billboard by Elliot & Erick Jiménez, first-generation Cuban American twin photo duo. The work is a portrait of Yemaya, the deity syncretized with our Lady of Regla in Cuba, and ruler of the seas — her shimmering dress resembling the refraction of the ocean’s surface. The figure is mostly obscured with the exception of her eyes; a customary feature within Elliot & Erick’s artwork, the eyes remaining present in the image serve as posterity to the history of Cuba’s colonialism and blending of Spanish and West African traditions. Reclining Mermaid is part of “Southern Histories”, a series of large-scale works at culturally significant sites to commemorate under-recognized historical narratives connected to Miami’s roots in the American South, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This public work underscores the history of migration from the Caribbean and Latin America to Miami and the myriad ways in which these cultures transformed the city’s urban fabric over the decades. Produced in collaboration with Spinello Projects and commissioned by Fringe Projects with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. • Want a Healthier Lawn? Instead of Bagging Fall Leaves? Get a More Environmentally Friendly Yard

Autumn is the season to gaze at gorgeous leaves of gold, yellow, and orange as they flutter from the trees and fall on our yards – but then, of course, comes the tedious task of raking them up and trying to decide what to do with them. All those leaves go to waste when you bag them for the landfill. Maksym Belchenko/iStock via Getty Images Plus SciLine interviewed Susan Barton, a professor of plant and soil sciences at the University of Delaware, who says taking a lazy approach is actually a win for your garden and the critters that live there. Dr. Susan Barton discusses fall lawn care Below are some highlights from the interview. Answers have been edited for brevity and clarity. Can leaves on a landscaped property ever be left as they are, or should they always be mulched? Susan Barton: A layer of leaves on the lawn will exclude light, which would be detrimental to the lawn. So when the leaves fall, either rake them up or chop them up with a lawn mower so they are finer and can sift down in through the grass blades. But if they fall in a landscape bed, or under trees, shrubs, and larger plants, it’s fine to just leave the leaves without mulching them. What are the benefits of mulching leaves rather than removing them? Susan Barton: The leaves contain nutrients, and they also are a source of organic matter. So if you allow the leaves to go back into the landscape, you are providing nutrients for the plants to take up, and you are providing organic matter that will improve the soil structure. If you think about forests, where leaves just naturally return to the soil and decompose every year, it’s some of the richest soil we have. By allowing that to happen in your landscape beds, you’re getting the same benefits. What can keep leaves from blowing from one property to another? Susan Barton: Chopping them up will dramatically reduce the blowing of the leaves. Make them smaller by either mowing over the leaves where they fall in the lawn, or raking them into piles and then mowing them. There are also leaf vacuums that vacuum, chop up, and put the leaves in a bag. Then you spread the leaves on your landscape beds. What are the environmental benefits of not removing the leaves? Susan Barton: If you rake up your leaves, put them in a black plastic bag, and have them taken off to a landfill, then they never get to decompose and return those nutrients and organic matter back to the soil. Instead, you’re taking what could be a resource and making it a problem. Also, many insects spend the winter in leaf litter. A lot of people might not want insects in their landscape, but only about 2% of all the insects in the world are considered pests. Most of them are either beneficial or of no consequence to humans, and they are very important food sources for birds and other animals. Birds feed the insects, especially caterpillars, to their hatchlings. So by allowing the insects to overwinter in the leaf litter, you’re supporting bird populations and, of course, pollinators, which help plants produce seeds that can develop into new plants. When should people fertilize lawns? Susan Barton: In the fall, because that is when turf grass is primarily growing roots and you’re promoting the kind of grass growth that makes a healthy, dense lawn. When you fertilize in the spring, your grass is growing leaves at that point, so you’re really just causing the grass to grow more and grow faster, and you will need to mow more often. So it really doesn’t make sense to fertilize in the spring. Also, when you chop up the leaves in the fall, you are actually also fertilizing in the fall because you’re putting those chopped-up leaves back into the soil. But it’s a good idea to add some additional fertilizer besides just the leaf litter. How can people get the most out of their lawns and make their landscaping more environmentally friendly? Susan Barton: The suburban norm is to have a lawn with some decorative plants around the house, or at the end of the driveway. But I think it’s a good idea to sort of flip that paradigm and design areas of the lawn that provide for play and gathering spaces, and then figure out what everything else can be. It’s just a different way of thinking about the landscape, and much more environmentally sensitive. It will provide all kinds of ecosystem services, whether it’s better water infiltration or better air quality. If we think about pulling carbon dioxide out of the air, we’re doing it a lot more if we’ve got a ground cover, a shrub layer, a small tree layer, and a large tree layer than we are if we have just a lawn. • Frost Science Hosts "An Evening of Discovery: Discovering the Ocean's Secrets" Fundraising Event

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) and its Board of Trustees welcomed over 150 cultural philanthropists, civic leaders and science supporters for “An Evening of Discovery: Discovering the Ocean’s Secrets.” The museum’s fundraiser was held in support of exhibitions and community programs at Frost Science. The evening began with an intimate reception featuring music by students from the Frost School of Music, along with an exclusive viewing of the new special exhibition, Sharks. The evening’s ocean-themed culinary offerings were prepared by Frost Science’s exclusive catering partner, Constellation Culinary Group, known for providing best-in-class dining experiences for one-of-a-kind cultural centers across the U.S. During the cocktail reception, guests enjoyed a series of passed appetizers, plus an oyster station. Constellation Culinary Group also prepared the evening’s specialty cocktail, the Diamond Sea Fizz, a mix of gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, edible flowers, and club soda. Following the reception, guests made their way inside the museum’s Ocean Gallery for the evening’s program and dinner. Constellation Culinary Group created a three-course meal inspired by the event’s ocean conservation theme. For the appetizer, guests enjoyed the Heirloom Tomato and Sesame-Crusted Avocado, featuring bitter greens, lemon vinaigrette, green tahini, and fried onion. The main course was fresh, net-caught Olive Oil Poached Grouper served with champagne caviar beurre blanc, chives, crushed potato galette, dehydrated orange and orange oil. The fish was covered in a “net” made of phyllo dough. For dessert, attendees savored the delectable and impressive “Sea Urchin,” a creamy urchin-shaped cheesecake topped with mango mousse and passion fruit sauce in a coral-inspired design. During dinner, Frost Science President and CEO Dr. Doug Roberts welcomed the crowd before introducing a video message from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and remarks from City of Miami Commissioner Sabina Covo. Dr. Phillip Frost addressed the esteemed guests before a riveting presentation by Dr. Michael Heithaus (executive dean of Florida International University’s College of Arts, Science & Education) about the importance of ocean science and conservation. Notable guests included Dr. Phillip and Patricia Frost, Frost Science Board Chairman Cesar L. Alvarez, Dr. Mark Yeager, Senator René García, and Jane Hsiao. By ML Staff.
