  • American Heritage Schools’ Students Against Destructive Decisions Club Hosted Mothers Against Drunk Driving's Power of You(th)® Presentation on Campus

In an effort to bring awareness of the dangers of impaired driving ahead of prom night and graduation, American Heritage Schools’ Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club at its Broward Campus hosted Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)’s impactful “Power of You(th)®” presentation on campus for 11th and 12th grade students on April 10. The assembly was organized by Harlee Ross, a junior at American Heritage Schools who also serves as the SADD Club president. According to MADD, 13,384 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes in 2021 – that’s one person every 39 minutes and 37 people a day killed by someone’s choice to drive drunk. During the “Power of You(th)” presentation, over 600 seniors and juniors from American Heritage Schools learned about the potentially deadly consequences of impaired driving. The DUI exposition featured a demonstration of what can happen if someone drives a car under the influence of drugs and alcohol. A DUI crashed car, provided by Guardian Fleet Services, was on campus for students to see first-hand examples of these dangers. Members from the Plantation Fire Department extracted mannequins from the mock car crash using the jaws of life tools while narrating the scene. Notable executives from MADD were in attendance including Heather Geronemus, Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale founder, and Jennifer Walsh, MADD South Florida area executive director. Bree Ann Marie Camacho, a young woman and victim, shared her story and provided tips and tricks on making informed decisions. Students also heard impactful stories and words from Geronemus and Ross. American Heritage Schools’ SADD Club, which was founded by Alumnus Harrison Ross in 2020, is a peer-to-peer education, prevention and activism organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, risky and impaired driving and more. “Power of You(th)” is one of MADD’s programs that provides youth with research-based information on the dangers of underage drinking and drug use. It aims to prepare youth with the tools to resist peer pressure and empower them to take the next step and influence their friends to make the right choices. “We’re grateful to work with MADD to educate our students and bring awareness to the dangers of impaired and destructive driving, especially ahead of special celebrations such as prom and graduation,” said Dr. Doug Laurie, president of American Heritage Schools. “We are proud of our students who are part of the SADD Club and helped bring this impactful presentation to our students.” “It was a great honor to work with the SADD Club and the staff at American Heritage Schools to once again host MADD’s Power of You(th) presentation on campus to educate students on the tragedies that drunk driving causes,” said Geronemus. “Events such as these raise awareness and put us one step closer to seeing a future with no more victims of this 100 percent preventable crime.” At 16 years old, Camacho's life was irrevocably altered when her beloved 13-year-old sister, Kaley Marie Camacho, tragically lost her life in a devastating drunk driving crash. On that fateful day, Camacho, her father and sister were driving when their vehicle was violently struck by a driver who was three times over the legal limit and recklessly speeding at over 100 mph illegally in the bus lane. To compound the tragedy, the reckless driver fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of destruction and heartache. This profound loss propelled Camacho into a tireless campaign against drunk driving, where she vowed to honor her sister's memory by advocating for greater awareness and prevention measures. Through her unwavering commitment to turning personal tragedy into societal change, Camacho inspires others to join her in the fight for safer roads and brighter futures. Today, she puts double the effort behind anything she does because she does it for two, ensuring that her sister's memory lives on through her relentless advocacy. In South Florida, the local MADD affiliate’s annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K has raised more than $3.7 million since it was founded in 2011 by Heather Geronemus, whose late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. The local Southeast Florida Chapter will host its 13th Annual UKG & The Salah Foundation Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K presented by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County. The event includes an in-person race on Sunday, April 28, starting near Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale, plus a virtual participation option. American Heritage Schools’ SADD Club will attend the race. • Presenting Ignacio Gana: From Artist of the Year at the Latin Grammys to Becoming the Most Sought-After Artist in Miami

Ignacio Gana is one of the most prestigious Latin American artists today. Currently based in Miami, his work is influenced by the spaces in which he lives, allowing him to imbue his pieces with a unique perspective, sophistication, and detail—elements that characterize his work, which includes monumental bronze sculptures  and Art installations. Ignacio Gana Through his monumental sculptures, he has become one of the most recognized artists in contemporary art today. His works are now essential references in important art collections and galleries around the world. His monumental sculptures can already be seen in the most prominent spaces in Miami, making him one of the most important and sought-after artists by collectors, developers, and interior designers in the United States. Clavadista Mujer (Bronce y acero, 240 x 80 x 80 cm, 95 x 32 x 32 inches) "I live in Miami, which allows me to be close to my studio and be present in each of the processes and the execution of each of my pieces, both in medium-sized sculptures and monumental ones, paying attention and working personally on every detail," he comments in an exclusive interview for Miami Living. Flamingo Girl (bronze, 15 feet tall) A lover of surfing and biking, Ignacio leaves his free time to enjoy nature and draw inspiration from the architecture and numerous museums in the city. "I decided to make Miami my headquarters, staying halfway between Europe, New York, and Los Angeles, places where I am regularly traveling between exhibitions, workshops, museums, and art galleries," he notes. Today, Ignacio has become an artistic reference, with his collections moving through galleries around the world and the most important luxury buildings in the city. He has received all kinds of recognition, including "Artist of the Year" at the Latin Grammy Awards, which helped position his work as the main object of desire for important galleries, museums, and collectors around the world. “This award places my career at the highest level of the arts circuit in the United States; it is one of the most recognized distinctions in the entertainment world alongside the Oscars. Being chosen as artist of the year marked a before and after in my artistic career. For me, it was very exciting, an honor, and a great recognition of my work," he stated. Los Angeles and the Inspiration behind The Game In addition to his unparalleled talent, his strong expansion into new markets on the West Coast of the United States, especially in California, where he is represented by the prominent Art Angels gallery located in Los Angeles, has been a driving force for his projection and artistic growth. "I love cities that inspire me; I can breathe in the culture in Los Angeles, the music, the art, the photography… It is a city that inspires me greatly, just like the nature that surrounds it. After working with some of the most important galleries in Miami, I decided to conquer the West Coast of the United States through my new collection 'The Game.' I chose Los Angeles because it is one of the art capitals of the world and home to many personalities from the world of sports, as well as great collectors and art lovers." The exhibition will include pieces conceived in noble materials such as gold, bronze, or giant marbles brought from Italy and aims to launch the artist's career to the highest level, consolidating his career within the United States by creating this series inspired by the essence of the city and the sporting icons of American football, basketball, and baseball. Cabeza Colosal (Bronze, 40 x 20 x 20 inches) It is an exhibition never before seen in the United States, where art and sport converge with the passion of both worlds. Such work is unprecedented until now. "Nothing like this has been done. It will definitely be my most conceptual and avant-garde work. I am sure it will mark a before and after in my career," comments the artist. Plans for the future "I am currently working on several public projects, including two monumental sculptures, each 16 feet tall, which will be installed in the city of Redondo Beach, California. Additionally, I am preparing the piece 'Diver,' a 15-foot-tall bronze sculpture that will be exhibited at the base of the tallest skyscraper in Brickell, Miami. I also dedicate part of my time to various commissions for collectors and developers in London and Dubai, as well as to my new collection 'SEDUCTION,' a collection of around 100 works centered on the seduction, sensuality, and beauty of women. This entire collection will be ready by 2025. This exhibition follows the idea of my swimmers but with a sexier touch. I can only reveal that the exhibition will consist solely of works inspired by women; they will be the protagonists of the show. Some of the works I have already been working on have been sold even before I have finished them; collectors who follow my career closely have written to me to secure a piece for their collection." Home Sweet Home (Medium Bronze, size 23 x 11 x 11 inches, edition 10, signed) Ignacio’s creative power, his meticulous execution, and the ability of his works to transport the observer into the world seen from his perspective - generating a pause, a moment, a journey - make his work essential both in private collections, new  buildings, public squares, and important avenues around the world , hand in hand with a unique stamp that makes it recognizable and universal. • Keeping Frizz at Bay in The Summer Heat

No matter how much you yearn for summertime, the heat and humidity can set the stage for your frizz to run wild and turn your tresses into a heap of shapeless hair. In summer the hair seeks more moisture from the surrounding air,the reason the humidity causes the hair to swell and turn frizzy. So how to control frizz when the humidity is at its peak? Here are some tips that are certain to help, keeping in mind your hairstyle and texture. Apply gel with hairspray When you apply hairspray and gel make sure you are choosing the right product for keeping frizz under control because the ones available today are not as heavy as they were way back in the 80s. Spread the gel throughout the hair before blow-drying it to smoothen and loosen your tresses. Then apply hairspray to render a flexible on the flowy style that will do wonders even in the most humid conditions. Don't forget to add essential oils Essential oils come in different types and can work well on frizzy hair if applying a coat to each strand of hair before setting foot outside. This will prevent the extra moisture from getting in and a mid+day touch up is ideal for best results. Coconut or peppermint are some of the best oils to try. Use a proper towelling technique Towels may be unheard of for an anti-frizz routine, but the fact is that after a shower drying the hair completely is very important. Towel thoroughly to get rid of all the moisture in your hair, else it will get frizzy. Most hairstyles, especially those with curly and coarse hair retain a lot of water,so thoroughly squeeze the moisture out with a towel as it will make a lot of difference to controlling damage and preventing frizz. Avoid excess heat on your hair While a blow dryer or any other heat tool is an essential part of a haircare kit, their use should be restricted to lessen damage to the hair.Though straighteners and similar tools help to seal the hair cuticles, their overuse will eventually dry out the hair and make it frizzy. Instead, apply a heat protecting serum on the wet hair and let it dry out in the air before using a blow dryer. Keep the setting at minimum,in order to avoid damage. Cover up Use a hat or scarf to cover up your head when out in the open to give your hair added protection from UV damage. Covering up will also help to retain the moisture in your hair and protect it from potential damage caused by the elements. When covering up use UV protection to help prevent sun damage, especially during the peak high heat hours between 11 am and 3 pm. To sum up By incorporating the above summer haircare tips to keep frizzy hair at bay, don't forget to eat a healthy and balanced diet and stay well hydrated to keep your skin and hair healthy in the hot weather.
