The Sussex home and studio of photographer Lee Miller and writer Roland Penrose is set to operate as a trust, ensuring the long term preservation of Miller’s personal archive, including the camera equipment she used to document World War II. Antony Penrose, the couple’s son, announced that the family’s property, Farleys House and Gallery in rural Sussex, will be maintained as a trust so that it remains largely as Miller left it. The decision follows growing interest in Miller’s life and work, driven in part by renewed attention to her wartime photography and personal effects. Miller’s archive includes her well used Rolleiflex cameras, flash bulbs, typewriter and passports, items that accompanied her as she produced some of the most enduring images of the Second World War. Colleagues recalled that she could dismantle and reassemble her cameras down to the last nut and bolt in difficult conditions, a testament to both her technical skill and field experience. The trust will safeguard the house, studio spaces and contents for future research and public visits, offering continued access to Miller’s photography and to the environment in which she lived and worked in the years after the war.
