In April of this year thanks to the generosity of PayCargo, LLC, Florida International University (FIU) Athletics unveiled a fully renovated facility featuring six lighted competition-level tennis courts, shaded seating areas, new fencing, and FIU-branded windscreens. The facility also includes a live-streaming camera system for all six courts and an in-arena scoreboard, enabling fans both on-site and online to follow the Panthers more closely. Facilities were judged on the following criteria: overall layout and adaptation to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for players, spectators and press/officials; aesthetics; graphics (including the use of signs and landscaping); amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and the facilities’ participation in grassroots tennis programs. - Honoring Heroes: The Legacy of William H. Johnson’s 'Fighters for Freedom' Through Art
Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass — the names conjure greatness and hard-won freedoms for the individual and the cause of racial justice. Their lives, and the stories of two dozen more, come alive in William H. Johnson’s Fighters for Freedom. William H. Johnson, Swearing in George Washington, ca. 1945, oil on paperboard, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of the Harmon Foundation, 1967.59.653 Working from newspaper images, photographs published in Life and Ebony, and pictures from books in the Schomburg collection of the New York Public Library, Johnson created a pantheon of historic and contemporary leaders who fought for the freedom of the individual around the world. Through historic figures — Crispus Attucks, the first person killed in the American Revolution was one; Haitian rebel Toussaint L’Ouverture another---as well as scientists, educators, performers, and abolitionists, Johnson traced the stories and notable accomplishments of those who guided the country on a path toward social and political independence. He was also keenly attuned to the contemporary moment. Events in the lives of Marian Anderson, Joe Louis, and Paul Robeson focused the national spotlight on the inequities suffered at home by these international giants. During World War II, Johnson depicted heads of state in Europe, Asia, and the United States meeting in far flung cities, and he painted portraits of Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi who worked to throw off colonial rule abroad. Rather than creating individual series featuring these fighters, as did Jacob Lawrence, a colleague who also taught at the Harlem Community Art Center, Johnson offered episodic vignettes that captured defining accomplishments, places, and sometimes multiple protagonists that told complete stories within a single image. Harriet Tubman, for example, shows the preeminent “conductor” of the Underground Railroad standing, rifle in hand, along a convergence of roads with the North Star bright above her head. At the lower right a bust-length portrait shows Tubman wrapped in the shawl presented to her by Queen Victoria. In Three Great Abolitionists, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and John Brown clasp hands in a yellow field with growing cotton, Gospel singers, a share cropper, and a lynched African American man. Marian Anderson is surrounded by flags and buildings representing cities around the world where she performed. In a small vignette at the center right, she shakes hands with Eleanor Roosevelt, who had arranged for Anderson to perform on the national mall, standing in front of the sculpture of Abraham Lincoln after the Daughters of the American Revolution cancelled her performance at Constitution Hall because she was black. Boxers frames Joe Louis between the cabin where he grew up and the army barracks where he served before beginning his reign as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949. Through the Fighters for Freedom, William H. Johnson celebrated defining moments that linked past and present individuals who, over the course of some two hundred years, had changed the lives of countless individuals across the globe. William H. Johnson (1901-1970), the man who painted the Fighters for Freedom, had struggled, too. As a seventeen-year-old, he left the Jim Crow life of Florence, South Carolina and headed for New York to become an artist. He worked as a laborer, saving money and building the painter’s skills that would earn him admission to the National Academy of Design. By the time he completed the course of study in 1926, he had won the Hallgarten Prize, the Canon Prize, and five more awards from the distinguished institution. Then, like so many other aspiring artists of his generation, he headed for Paris. There and in the south of France he painted expressionist landscapes and light-struck buildings that marked him as an up-and-coming modernist. On his return to the States, Jonson showed his work and won additional prizes. He spent time in New York and painted family and friends in Florence. In Washington, DC, he visited Harlem Renaissance writer and Howard University professor Alain Locke, who acted as something of an agent for Johnson. While staying at Locke’s home, he met poet Langston Hughes and presented Hughes with a painting. In 1930 Johnson returned to Europe, married Danish weaver and ceramist Holcha Krake. For the next eight years the couple lived and traveled throughout Denmark and Norway. They visited Tunisia, where he painted mosques and markets; in the Netherlands he studied the work of Vincent van Gogh. In Scandinavia Johnson had lived in a white European world. On his return to New York in late 1938, he embraced his blackness and put the brilliant expressionistic landscapes and portraits from the Scandinavian years behind him to focus on African American life at home. For the next seven years he painted share croppers in the south, hipsters in New York, jitterbug dancers, black soldiers training for war, religious subjects drawn from Negro spirituals, and, his last series, the Fighters for Freedom. By the mid-1940s, Johnson’s health had begun to deteriorate. Devastated by the recent death of his wife, he returned to Denmark, hoping to regain happier times. But his mental state was increasingly unstable. He was returned to the United States and hospitalized at Central Islip State Hospital on Long Island, where he remained, unable to paint, for the last two decades of his life. Johnson showed the Fighters for Freedom only twice. Once at the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library during “National Negro History Week” in 1946 and again in Copenhagen in 1947, under the title “For Freedom and the U.N.” Although individual panels appeared in exhibitions from time to time, the group as a whole has not been seen in the United States for almost seventy-five years. - The Science Behind Weight Loss Medications: Exploring Their Effectiveness and Safety
The quest for effective weight loss solutions has been a focal point in public health and wellness for decades. As obesity rates climb globally, many individuals are turning to weight loss medications as a promising option to shed excess pounds and improve their health. With a growing array of pharmaceutical interventions available, understanding how these medications work, their effectiveness, and their safety is crucial. This article delves into the science behind weight loss medications, exploring their mechanisms, effectiveness, and potential risks to provide a comprehensive guide for those considering these treatments. Image by Atlas / Adobestock The Science of Weight Loss: How Do Medications Work? One primary mechanism is appetite suppression. Some medications work by influencing neurotransmitters in the brain that control hunger. For instance, drugs like phentermine and lorcaserin affect serotonin levels, which can help reduce appetite and promote feelings of fullness. Another approach involves inhibiting fat absorption. Medications such as orlistat function by blocking enzymes responsible for digesting fats in the intestines, thereby reducing the number of calories absorbed from dietary fats. Additionally, certain weight loss drugs aim to enhance metabolism. These medications work by increasing the body's energy expenditure, leading to greater calorie burning. Drugs that boost metabolic rate can help individuals burn more calories throughout the day, even at rest. A notable example of a weight loss medication is Ozempic, which is often discussed for its effectiveness in managing weight and diabetes. If you're interested in exploring this option, you might consider looking into how to get Ozempic online to understand the process and availability. Weight loss medications can be broadly categorized into prescription drugs and over-the-counter supplements. Prescription medications, such as those mentioned above, are typically subject to rigorous clinical trials and regulatory oversight. On the other hand, over-the-counter supplements might not always undergo the same level of scrutiny, which can affect their efficacy and safety. Effectiveness of Weight Loss Medications Evaluating the effectiveness of weight loss medications involves examining clinical trials and research studies that assess their impact on weight reduction. Clinical trials provide valuable insights into how well these medications work in controlled environments. Studies often measure weight loss over specific periods, comparing the results of those taking the medication to those receiving a placebo. Research consistently shows that weight loss medications can lead to significant reductions in body weight. For instance, clinical trials of medications like orlistat have demonstrated average weight losses of 5-10% of body weight over a year. However, individual results can vary widely. Factors such as genetic predisposition, lifestyle, and adherence to the medication regimen play critical roles in determining outcomes. Several factors influence the effectiveness of weight loss medications. Individual differences, such as metabolic rate, genetic factors, and pre-existing health conditions, can affect how well a medication works. Additionally, the duration of medication use is crucial. Some medications might show better results over extended periods, while others may be more effective in the short term. Image by Africa Studio / Adobestock Safety and Side Effects Common side effects vary depending on the medication. For instance, medications like orlistat can cause gastrointestinal issues, including oily stools and flatulence, due to their fat-blocking mechanism. Other medications, such as those affecting neurotransmitters, might lead to psychological effects like mood swings or anxiety. Certain medications pose specific risks and contraindications. Individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases or severe mental health disorders, might be advised against using certain weight loss drugs. Additionally, there is a potential for misuse or over-reliance on medications as a quick fix rather than addressing underlying lifestyle factors. Regulatory agencies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), play a crucial role in approving and monitoring weight loss medications. These agencies conduct thorough evaluations of drug safety and effectiveness before approval. Post-market surveillance is also essential for detecting and managing any adverse effects that may arise once the medication is widely used. Alternatives to Weight Loss Medications For those seeking alternatives to pharmaceutical interventions, several options exist. Lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes and increased physical activity, remain foundational to effective weight management. Behavioral therapies and counseling can also support long-term weight loss by helping individuals develop healthier habits and cope with challenges. Surgical interventions, such as bariatric surgery, offer another alternative for those who have not achieved the desired results with medications or lifestyle changes alone. Bariatric surgery can provide significant weight loss and improve overall health, but it comes with its own set of risks and considerations. Natural and holistic approaches, such as herbal supplements and acupuncture, are also explored by some individuals. While these methods may offer benefits, their effectiveness and safety can vary, and they are often best used in conjunction with other strategies. Image by Friends Stock / Adobestock Conclusion Understanding the science behind weight loss medications, their effectiveness, and their safety is essential for making informed decisions about these treatments. Weight loss medications can offer significant benefits for those struggling with obesity, but they must be used thoughtfully and in conjunction with other health strategies. As the field of weight loss continues to evolve, staying informed about new developments and maintaining a balanced approach to health can help individuals achieve their weight loss goals effectively and safely. - Award-Winning Mental Health Game Changer: Dr. Joy Harden Bradfordon the Power of Sisterhood
Exploring the Transformative Impact of Sisterhood within Community. In an exclusive interview, Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, the award-winning mental health advocate and founder of Therapy for Black Girls, talks to Miami Living and shares her insights on the transformative power of sisterhood and community. With a profound impact on mental health through her platform, Dr. Joy discusses the inspiration behind Therapy for Black Girls, her exploration of friendships and sisterhood in her book Sisterhood Heals: The Transformative Power of Healing Community, and the critical role of community healing for Black women. She also offers practical advice on cultivating supportive spaces, recognizing toxic dynamics, and making mental health topics more accessible. As she looks ahead, Dr. Joy envisions a future rich with opportunities for in-person gatherings and continued growth in the mental health field. ML: Dr. Joy, your work with Therapy for Black Girls has had a tremendous impact on the mental health community. Can you share what inspired you to start this platform? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: I started Therapy for Black Girls in 2014 after watching the Black Girls Rock Award show on BET. It was inspiring to see Black women celebrating one another across a variety of industries and I thought it would be cool to capture some of that same energy for Black women as it relates to mental health. I jumped on GoDaddy that night and purchased the domain. I began by blogging on the site sharing information about things like questions to ask potential therapists and how to lean into your support system. I then added the directory and podcast to the site in 2017 as additional ways to offer resources and continue our mission of making mental health more relevant and accessible for Black women and girls. ML: In your book “Sisterhood Heals: The Transformative Power of Healing Community,” you explore the power of friendships and sisterhood. What key elements make these relationships so vital for mental well-being? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: Sisterhood and friendship are vital for our well-being because it is in these relationships that we’re able to be our most authentic selves. This may be best captured in what I call “The 4 S’s of Sisterhood.” Sisterhood allows us to be seen. It allows us to support and be supported. It allows us to soften, and it allows us to have greater knowledge of self. ML: You have previously spoken about the transformative power of community healing. Can you explain how collective healing differs from individual healing and why it’s so crucial for Black women ? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: Healing in community happens in large part because of the reduction in shame. Often it’s the case that we are struggling with something and we carry a great deal of shame because we believe we’re the only ones who could be feeling something or struggling in a particular way and it is in community that we realize that we are not alone with any thing we may be feeling or experiencing. As the shame dissipates, we are more able to confront our experiences and receive support from others to deal with it. I think this is particularly important for Black women because there are so many experiences where we question why something may be happening to us and through checking in with others we learn that things may not be occurring through any fault of our own but instead due to systems of oppression and discrimination. ML: What advice would you give to someone looking to cultivate a safe and supportive space within their community? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: I’d encourage them to first look around in their background to see whether there is anyone in the background of their lives that with a little bit of effort could move to the foreground. For example, maybe there’s someone you exchange pleasantries with during a yoga class you frequent or a fellow mom you run into in the carpool line. What might it be like to ask if they’d like to grab breakfast with you after yoga or after drop-off. We may be surprised by the kinds of relationships that may develop just from a simple invitation. I also think it’s important to remember that if there is a thing in the world we’d like to see that doesn’t exist, it may be because we’re the ones meant to create it. If you’re looking for community and connections in your area, there’s a good chance that others are as well so perhaps you might consider putting out an open call on social media or through your network inviting people who are also looking for community to a game night or some other low-stakes gathering. ML: Can you talk about the importance of showing up for people in our community, especially during challenging times? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: Showing up during challenging times is when community becomes most evident and is what we tend to remember most. I am sure we can all remember a small or large gesture someone offered to us during a difficult time that made things just a little easier. The key to showing up during challenging times is in anticipating needs for those in our community. For example, when someone is grieving we often will say things like “let me know if you need anything,” but people who are grieving often don’t know what they need because they’re often using all of their energy just to get through the next moment. So doing something like having their favorite food dishes delivered so they don’t have to think about what to eat or going over to do a few loads of laundry or dishes can help to take tasks off their plate so that they can just focus on grieving. ML: As a licensed psychologist, what do you see as the biggest challenges Black women face in accessing mental health care, and how can we work towards overcoming these barriers? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: I think that some of the largest challenges include a lack of culturally responsive providers, lower rates of reimbursement for mental health providers making it more challenging for providers to accept insurance, and though it has been lessened, there is still significant stigma associated with mental health services. ML: In your experience, what are some effective ways to foster and maintain healthy friendships and sisterhoods? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: The most effective ways to foster and maintain healthy friendships include being intentional about spending time with one another, being willing to navigate difficult conversations with one another, and being intentional about showing up for one another both during challenging times and in times of celebration. ML: How can individuals recognize and address toxic dynamics in their friendships and communities? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: Our bodies tend to be our first indicators that a dynamic is toxic. We may have headaches or stomaches after spending time with someone or immediately before interacting with them. We may find ourselves avoiding contact with certain people or feeling annoyed or anxious with the idea of potential contact. These are all indicators that the dynamic with this person may not be one that is healthy or fulfilling for us. I also think that when you find yourself trying to tally how much you’ve done or how often you’ve shown up for someone else vs how often this has been reciprocated, this is also an indicator of a relationship where our needs may not be being prioritized. ML: Your work focuses on making mental health topics more accessible. What are some strategies you’ve found effective in engaging and educating your audience about these issues? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: I have found tying mental health concepts to notable moments in pop culture largely effective in making the information more relevant and accessible. For example, the friendship breakup between Molly and Issa in Season 4 of “Insecure” provided an excellent opportunity to talk about friendship dynamics and sisterhood in a way that felt very accessible to many of those who watched. These kinds of moments can bring concepts to life in ways that allow us to be very engaged and less threatened because we’re discussing fictional characters. ML: Looking ahead, what are your hopes and plans for the future of Therapy for Black Girls and your work in the mental health field? Dr. Joy Harden Bradford: I am most excited about continuing to create opportunities for our community to gather with one another in person. We recently held our Inaugural Therapist Summit in Atlanta and it solidified for me the importance of spaces where mental health professionals can be vulnerable with one another but also have opportunities to play with one another. We cannot wait to get started on planning the next one. For further information, please visit: www.hellodrjoy.com . To follow her along socially, visit @hellodrjoy on Instagram . By ML staff. - How Meteorologists Detect the Early Signs of a Forming Hurricane
When tropical meteorologists peer at satellite images , they often catch sight of subtle cloud formations hinting at something more ominous brewing. The first signs of a potential hurricane can be detected days before a storm gains its fierce momentum. Wispy cirrus clouds radiating outward, the appearance of curved banding low-level clouds and a drop in atmospheric pressure are all clues. These early clues are crucial for predicting the onset of what might develop into a catastrophic hurricane. I am a meteorology professor at Penn State, and my research group uses satellites and computer models to improve forecasting of tropical weather systems. With an especially fierce Atlantic storm season forecast for 2024, being able to detect these initial signals and provide early warnings is more important than ever. Here’s what forecasters look for. Hurricane Harvey entered the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical wave before reorganizing into a tropical storm and then a destructive hurricane that hit Texas in 2017. NOAA. Conditions ripe for a hurricane Hurricanes typically start as atmospheric tropical waves , areas of low pressure associated with clusters of thunderstorms. As these tropical waves move westward across tropical oceans, some of them can develop into hurricanes. The formation of a hurricane hinges on several specific conditions : Distance from the Equator: Tropical cyclones usually form at least 5 degrees from the equator. This is because the Coriolis force , crucial for the initial spin-up of the cyclonic system, is weaker near the equator. The Coriolis force is caused by the Earth’s rotation, which makes moving air turn and swirl. Warm sea surface temperatures: The sea surface temperature must be at least 26.5 degrees Celsius (about 80 Fahrenheit) for a hurricane to form. The warm water provides energy that drives the storm as the storm absorbs heat and moisture from the ocean. Atmospheric instability and moisture: For tropical cyclones to form, the atmosphere needs to be unstable. This means that warm surface air rises and remains warmer than the surrounding air, allowing it to keep rising and forming thunderstorms. There also needs to be plenty of moisture, as dry air can cause clouds to evaporate and weaken the upward motions within thunderstorms. These factors are essential for the development of clustered thunderstorms within the tropical waves. Low vertical wind shear: Strong vertical wind shear can tear a developing hurricane apart. Vertical wind shear is changes in wind direction or speed at different elevations. It disrupts a storm’s formation and growth and makes it hard for a hurricane to keep its vortex aligned. Early forecasting requires more than satellites Recognizing the early stages in the life cycle of a hurricane has been very challenging because there aren’t large numbers of surface stations and weather balloons to provide detailed atmospheric information over the open ocean. Once a storm starts to form, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s hurricane hunter airplanes will often fly through it, taking measurements and dropping sensors to get more data. But that can’t happen for every wispy cloud, particularly when the developing system is far from the coast. One of the primary tools meteorologists currently use to forecast the early formation of hurricanes is satellite imagery, which provides real-time data on cloud patterns, sea surface temperatures and other atmospheric conditions. For instance, the GOES satellites operated by NOAA help meteorologists track the development of hurricanes with unprecedented clarity. These satellites can captur e images at multiple wavelengths, allowing forecasters to analyze various aspects of the storm, such as cloud formation , precipitation and lightning activity . The formation of Hurricane Irma in 2017, from a disturbance to a hurricane with a clear vortex, observed by satellite. The colors show cloud top temperature. Colder temperatures mean the cloud is deeper. The streamlines indicate the circulation of the system. European Space Agency, Meteosat-10 However, satellite observations alone don’t provide enough information for meteorologists to know which tropical waves are likely to develop into hurricanes. To enhance forecasting accuracy, our research group has developed methods for incorporating real-time satellite data , including humidity levels and cloud patterns, into computer forecast models. This process, known as data assimilation, enables a more precise and consistent depiction of atmospheric conditions. As a result, forecasters can benefit from significantly enhanced predictive capabilities, particularly in anticipating the formation and progression of hurricanes. We’re currently working with NOAA to refine these techniques and bring them into wider use for better hurricane forecasting and earlier warnings so the public has more time to prepare. As people in North America and the Caribbean brace for what is predicted to be a particularly intense hurricane season in 2024 , the need for accurate early storm forecasting has never been greater. Image by Day Of Victory Stu / Adobestock You Don’t Have To Train Like A Professional Athlete To Be Healthy It’s their job to stay in shape, so you, with your 9 to 5, shouldn’t bug yourself if you don’t look like you’re carved from stone. But there are things you can pick up from their lifestyles - and their nutritionists’ advice - to lead a healthier lifestyle. 14 Things Athletes Do To Stay Healthy - Not Toned, Just Healthy Please note that this list isn’t and will never be a workout routine or, god forbid, a diet almanac. It’s a light list of simple but genius suggestions that are very general and very easy to maintain - theoretically, at least. 1. They Prioritize Sleep You might think that training is the most important thing for an athlete, but sleep is the secret weapon. Professional athletes understand that quality sleep is crucial for recovery and performance. They often sleep for 8 to 10 hours a night, and many even take naps during the day to recharge. So, if you want to stay in shape, prioritize your sleep! Consider creating a sleep routine that allows you to unwind before bed. 2. They Stay Hydrated Water is the elixir of life, and athletes know it well. Staying hydrated helps them maintain energy levels and performance. They often drink water throughout the day and might also include electrolyte-rich drinks during intense training sessions. So, if you're feeling sluggish, try increasing your water intake. Your body will thank you! 3. They Follow a Balanced Diet Professional athletes eat to fuel their bodies, and their diets are typically rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. They also pay attention to portion sizes and meal timing to optimize their performance. While it might be tempting to indulge in junk food, remember that your body is like a car - it runs best on high-quality fuel! 4. They Have a Consistent Training Routine Consistency is key! Athletes follow strict training schedules, which might include a mix of cardio, strength training, and sport-specific drills. Adhering to a routine ensures steady progress and maintains fitness levels. To stay motivated, consider setting your own training goals and sticking to a regular schedule. 5. They Incorporate Recovery Days Just like machines need maintenance, our bodies need recovery. Professional athletes often schedule rest days to allow their muscles to recover and grow. This can include light activities like stretching or yoga. Allow yourself to rest - it’s essential for long-term success. Image by bnenin / Adobestock 6. They Play Team Sports Athletes know that teamwork makes them stronger. Many of them participate in team sports, which helps develop not only physical fitness but also social skills. By working together, they learn to support each other and find common ground. Not to mention, team sports are a lot fo fun. 7. They Set Goals and Track Progress Goal-setting is a common practice among athletes. They set both short-term and long-term goals to stay motivated and focused. Tracking their progress helps them adjust their training and celebrate achievements along the way. You can do the same by keeping a journal of your fitness journey. Write down your goals and reflect on your progress regularly. 8. They Embrace Mental Training Staying mentally fit is just as important as physical fitness. Professional athletes often engage in mental training techniques, such as visualization, meditation, and mindfulness. These practices help them manage stress and maintain focus during competitions. If you haven’t tried meditation yet, do so - it can work wonders for your overall well-being. 9. They Engage in Active Recovery Active recovery is all about low-intensity activities that promote blood flow and recovery without stressing the body. On recovery days, athletes might go for a light walk, swim, or practice yoga. Incorporating these activities into your routine can help you recover faster and feel more energized. 10. They Make Time for Fun Yes, athletes work hard, but they also make time for fun and relaxation. Doing hobbies, spending time with friends, and enjoying leisure activities are essential for mental health. Don’t forget to include fun in your life - it keeps you balanced and motivated! 11. They Play With Kids Children are an inexhaustible source of energy! Professional athletes find time to play with their kids, and this helps them stay active and joyful. Playing with children can be a great way to boost your mood and improve your physical fitness. Image by VadimGuzhva / Adobestock 12. They Listen to Their Bodies Athletes know their bodies well and listen to them. If they feel tired or sore, they adjust their training accordingly. They Keep Learning The world of sports is constantly evolving, and professional athletes stay updated on the latest techniques, training methods, and nutrition advice. They read books, attend workshops, and seek knowledge from experts. You can also benefit from continuous learning by exploring new fitness trends and strategies. 14. They Make Self-Care a Priority Self-care is crucial for overall well-being. Professional athletes often engage in activities that promote relaxation and rejuvenation, such as massages, spa days, or quiet time with a good book. - Public Advocacy Helps Musicians’ Fame and Fortune, New Study Finds
Musicians often face skepticism from the public when they openly support charitable or social causes. There are often speculations that musicians only do this to serve their own self-interests for reputation or tax purposes . Even established artists cannot avoid the risk of negative publicity. In 2019, Taylor Swift released the song “You Need To Calm Down” supporting the LGBTQ+ advocacy group GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). The song contains the lyrics: “Why are you mad? When you could be GLAAD?” This led to a surge in donations to the organization, but some criticized Swift as jumping on the bandwagon to stay relevant . Taylor Swift performs during ‘The Eras Tour,’ on Aug. 7, 2023, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello) In another example, when Lana Del Rey joined a Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles in 2020 and shared footage of her fellow protesters on Instagram, she was criticized for not blurring their faces , making them potential targets of revenge actions . Singer Justine Skye accused Del Rey of being inauthentic in her actions : “We don’t need your weak ass documentation. If you were about the peace, you would’ve encouraged those white kids causing destruction just for their selfish entertainment to STOP! Making actual PROTESTERS look bad.” Del Rey later removed the video. These high-profile examples might make it seem like advocacy is a bad idea for musicians, with risk outweighing reward. However, our recent research has found that musicians who engage in advocacy regularly can enhance their popularity and music sales. Consistent advocacy is key Our study on musicians’ public charity advocacy analyzed over 300,000 public messages of 384 musicians on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and their weekly music sales from 2016 to 2017. Among these messages, only around 5,000 supported social causes, or less than two for every 100 messages. This illustrated artists’ great hesitancy towards public advocacy. However, we found that publicly backing charity causes on both an intermittent and regular basis earned musicians more likes, shares and comments. These artists also increased music sales, whether they sent these messages occasionally or constantly. Regular advocacy messages far outperformed intermittent ones in drawing attention and boosting sales. This difference was even more prominent when compared to two other types of messages: commercial messages, which are meant to publicize their music, and self-revealing messages, which focused on musicians’ personal lives. Intermittent advocacy messages were less popular and led to fewer sales. However, regular advocacy messages outperformed both, attracting more engagement and driving higher sales. Our research also found that while regular self-revealing messages received likes, comments and shares, they led to a decrease in sales. These messages only boosted sales when sent occasionally — they backfired when churned out constantly. This contrasts sharply with the success of regular advocacy messages. This is likely because audiences eventually view these actions as gimmicky and orchestrated, rather than authentic. This negatively impacts the artists’ personal brand and reduces demand for their music products. Establishing credibility In contrast, when musicians consistently advocate for social and charity causes, the public — especially those who also support the same causes — gradually recognize their sincerity and commitment to causes and respect them for doing so. Musicians who are consistent in their advocacy gain respect from the public over time. Selena Gomez, for example, solidified her reputation as an advocate for mental health awareness and was honoured for her contributions . Selena Gomez takes part in the featured session ‘Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health’ at the Austin Convention Center during the South by Southwest Conference on March 10, 2024, in Austin, Texas. (Jack Plunkett/Invision/AP) Ed Sheeran supported different charity causes over the years, including cancer research and funding for music students with disabilities , among others. All these actions enhanced his standing as being “the nicest guy in the music industry. ” Swift, over the years, has become a staunch advocate of the LGBTQ+ community . She spoke out against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in the United States at one of her Eras Tour concerts in 2023, encouraging fans to be intentional while voting at the ballot box. Divisive social causes Musicians who choose to publicly support social causes have a complex landscape to navigate. If the causes musicians advocate for are divisive, such as support for women’s abortion rights or refugees, they risk alienating part of their fanbase. This can lead to backlash and a potential loss of support from fans who hold opposing views. One Reddit user described their discomfort in a discussion on this subject: “I prefer musicians to not talk about politics, unless they are knowledgeable about what they’re talking about. There is a world of difference between someone being invested in an issue and bringing it to the stage and someone who just feels like they should add to a popular topic, and then rambles about some sentiment that they don’t even understand.” This comment highlights the importance of musicians being well-informed about the causes they support, as superficial advocacy can hurt their credibility and lead to criticism. Faced with these risks, artists might choose to stay anonymous in their advocacy actions. By supporting causes quietly or behind the scenes, they can avoid public scrutiny and potential backlash. But for those who do publicly support social causes, their careers can often benefit. Being consistent advocates not only improves musicians’ reputations, but also allows them to make a more substantial contribution to the causes they champion. By educating themselves about social issues and strengthening networks, they become more effective and are more likely to make a meaningful impact. By ML Staff.
