- Coconut Grove Civil Rights Leader Thelma Gibson Celebrated 99th Birthday With Community Fundraiser
Civil rights leader and Coconut Grove native Thelma V. Gibson marked her 99th birthday on December 19, 2025, with a luncheon fundraiser held at The Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove , bringing together community leaders, business owners, healthcare professionals, and advocates from across Miami-Dade County. Hosted by The Thelma Gibson Health Initiative (TGHI) in collaboration with the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Miami-Dade County , the event honored Gibson’s lifelong work advancing civil rights, education, health equity, and economic opportunity for women and Black communities in South Florida. Proceeds from the luncheon supported plans to renovate a newly acquired TGHI property that will serve as the organization’s permanent headquarters and a shared workspace for women in need. Born and raised in Coconut Grove, Gibson attended segregated schools before graduating from George Washington Carver High School in 1944. She later earned her nursing degree from Saint Agnes School of Nursing at Saint Augustine’s College in North Carolina and returned to Miami to begin her career as a registered nurse. Her professional path unfolded amid systemic segregation and discrimination, experiences that shaped her transition into civil rights leadership and community organizing. Over the decades, Gibson founded TGHI and later established the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Miami-Dade County, dedicating her work to education, financial literacy, mental health awareness, and community wellness. TGHI now serves low-income and disenfranchised residents throughout Miami-Dade County, addressing issues ranging from economic instability and health disparities to youth development and mental health support. The December luncheon highlighted Gibson’s enduring influence and the continued relevance of her vision. The planned TGHI facility is intended to provide stability, resources, and collaborative space for women-led initiatives, reinforcing Gibson’s commitment to dignity and empowerment through community-based solutions. - Yotam Ottolenghi to Open First Netherlands Restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium Amsterdam
Chef, restaurateur, and author Yotam Ottolenghi will open his first restaurant in the Netherlands in early 2026, marking a return to Amsterdam nearly three decades after living in the city. The restaurant, titled Ottolenghi Amsterdam, will be located inside the newly rebranded Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium, Amsterdam , situated in the Museum District near landmarks such as the Rijksmuseum and the Concertgebouw. The opening coincides with the transformation of the former Conservatorium Hotel into Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium, Amsterdam in January 2026. Ottolenghi Amsterdam will be a central part of this repositioning, joining the hotel’s culinary offering as a year-round dining destination for both locals and international guests. Ottolenghi, known globally for his cookbooks Plenty, Simple, and Comfort, previously lived in Amsterdam in the mid-1990s while completing his postgraduate studies before relocating to London. There, he trained at Le Cordon Bleu and went on to establish the Ottolenghi group, which now includes ten locations in the UK and an international outpost at Mandarin Oriental, Geneva, opened in 2025. The Amsterdam restaurant will be inspired by Ottolenghi’s London restaurant ROVI, with a vegetable-forward menu built around seasonal produce, bold flavors, and techniques such as fermentation and pickling. The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, emphasizing shared plates made primarily with locally sourced ingredients. Designed within the hotel’s iconic glass atrium, the space will feature warm wood tones and red and gold accents, blending the feel of a neighborhood restaurant with Ottolenghi’s established visual identity. The concept is intended to function as a social hub, connecting hotel guests with the surrounding cultural community. Additional details, including the opening date, head chef, menu, and reservations, will be announced in early 2026. Updates are expected to be shared through Mandarin Oriental’s official digital channels . By ML Staff. Photos: Ottolenghi and Mandarin Oriental.

- Beginner’s Guide to Guitar Frets and Finger Placement
It will be a very rewarding process for music lovers to learn the guitar. Beginners can build a sturdy foundation with this knowledge about frets and finger placement. Consider this a guide with the most important tips to get new players started on the right path. Image by DepositPhotos Understanding Guitar Frets The neck of the guitar is composed of metal strips (called frets). Each fret is a musical note. Changing a note's pitch involves pressing a string just behind a fret. Learning the layout of the fretboard is useful to beginners. Fret numbers, usually shown as dots together, are perfect to quickly and accurately locate their respective notes. So to sum it up, what are guitar frets ? They turn the fretboard into a map, helping beginners find chords and scales without guesswork. Identifying Finger Numbers Each finger on the playing hand is assigned a number for easier instruction. The index finger is number one. The middle finger is number two. The ring finger is number three. The pinky finger is number four. Assigning numbers to fingers streamlines learning chords and melodies. Proper Finger Placement on Frets Make sure that fingers are placed near the fret but not on top of it, as this will create a clear sound. Do not push the metal strip by itself. Placing the fingertip just behind the fret is ideal to skip the buzzing and dead sounds. You want to press hard enough to be able to play the note, but not so hard as to strain your hands. Developing Good Hand Position The thumb should stay behind the neck to provide some support. This position allows the fingers to maintain a natural curve over the string. Curved-out fingers will help every note ring out clearly. A relaxed wrist will avoid tiredness and promote easier movement over the fretboard. Practicing Finger Strength and Independence Developing finger strength takes time and is something that comes with practice. Pressing each finger on different frets in order is a simple exercise that builds dexterity as they are used repeatedly in songs. Working on scales or simple melodies helps develop finger independence, which makes chord transitions easier with practice. Learning Chord Shapes Many songs have their foundation in chords. The other shapes, C major, G major, and E minor, are the ones we should start with as absolute beginners. When fingers are placed on the right frets, chords ring cleanly. Doing these shapes daily builds muscle memory and confidence. Avoiding Common Mistakes Beginners often press too hard or too soft on the strings. When the pressure is precisely right, a clean note emerges without causing any finger pain. If you stretch your fingers too much or lay them too flat against the fretboard, you can mute the sound. Maintaining your fingertips elevated can alleviate this issue. Image by DepositPhotos Using Visual Markers Many guitars use dots or markers on the neck and side. These graphics allow musicians to quickly discover fingerings without taking their eyes off the music. Beginners should use these guides to navigate the fretboard more easily. Incorporating Practice Routines Spending some practice time every day improves where your fingers sit as well as helping you get to know where the frets fall. This approach ensures that it develops skills that stick by running short sessions of focused engagement a day. With repetition, the movement of the fingers becomes a little more automatic with each practice and more confident as well. Listening for Clear Notes By playing each fret slowly and listening for clarity, you can ensure you are placing your fingers correctly. You must make adjustments if you hear buzzing or muted sounds. New players should experiment with different finger angles and pressures until they achieve a clear and crisp sound for each note. Maintaining Comfortable Posture Proper posture also avoids excessive tension, which will allow you to practice longer. Straight-backed sitting lets the arms do their business. Holding the guitar up a little higher keeps your fingers relaxed and responsive. Progressing to More Complex Skills After acclimating to the fundamental finger placement, novices can advance to challenging scales and chords. Finger exercises paired with easy songs also help keep the practice interesting. Improvement is gradual and based on incremental skills. Enjoying the Learning Process For a novice, you need to be patient and persistent. At first, the progress may appear to be slow, but human efforts confirm results in full. Rewarding learning with a few successes also generates more motivation and makes it a pleasant experience. Conclusion Understanding guitar frets and how to use our fingers gives new players an advantage. Playing with confidence comes from a clear understanding of the concepts, proper technique, and regular practice! Any dedicated guitarist can get further and have fun with music. By ML Staff. - Choosing Appropriate Thickening Products for Care Needs
Thickening products play a crucial role in the diets of patients with swallowing difficulties. This need tends to develop due to advanced age, ill health, or even certain developmental abnormalities. Thickening products allow safe swallowing and ingestion of the necessary nutrition and hydration without threat to health. Thickening agents are beneficial for individuals who have difficulty swallowing, helping to make liquids safer and more manageable for treatment and beverages. Caregivers, professionals, and families need to know how to select suitable products. Image by DepositPhotos Selecting an appropriate thickening product is not just a clinical decision – it directly affects comfort, safety, and daily quality of life. The right choice can reduce anxiety around eating and drinking while supporting proper hydration and nutrition. Trusted solutions such as SimplyThick highlight how consistency, reliability, and ease of use can make a meaningful difference in care routines. With this foundation in mind, the following pointers explore what to consider when making an informed choice. Understanding Swallowing Challenges Many people face difficulty swallowing , which is called dysphagia. The condition puts them at a greater risk of choking and aspiration. The most common cause of aspiration is the entry of liquids into the airway by accident. Affected persons may cough when eating, have a hoarse-sounding voice, or refuse to drink altogether. Such things expose people to risks, and hence, medical professionals always advise patients to consume thickened liquids to minimize the risks. Having the right product can simplify life for all: make it easier, make it safer. Types of Thickening Agents Various types of thickening agents are available. Powders are often used due to their ease of dissolution, and they can also be modulated to various consistencies. They also come in liquid forms, so you can just drink them to prepare quickly. Thickened beverages provide consistency and safety but may lack flavor variety. Know your needs and choose wisely, as each has its advantages and disadvantages. Matching Consistency to Individual Needs The consistency you give a healthcare professional is also what they will recommend for safety. The principal consistencies include nectar-thick, honey-thick, and pudding-thick. And each level has different degrees of difficulty in swallowing. The person is typically assessed by a speech and language therapist who gives advice on what the most suitable level is. You don't want to try to guess, as the improper texture is a health risk. Ingredients and Dietary Considerations Various thickening agents are made from starch, and others are based on gum. Then starch-based types have a regular structure (that may be grainy, notably if poorly blended). Gum types normally offer more of a smooth sensation and stay thicker for longer. Others could have specific types of allergies or perhaps gluten intolerance. It is vital to read ingredient labels diligently to confirm that the product meets medical or ethical requirements. Image by DepositPhotos Taste and Palatability Taste determines if someone will drink thickened liquids willingly. Some can leave behind an aftertaste or change the taste of beverages. Caregivers can try out various brands and types to see what the person likes. Providing different flavors, where feasible, will keep drinking and eating interesting and will help with hydration and nutrition. Ease of Preparation The time it takes to prepare might disrupt daily life. For powders, this needs measuring and mixing to obtain a fully lump-free blend. Liquid and pre-thickened products can help streamline the process, but provide limited flexibility to personalize the thickness. Preparing it consistently is important because incorrect mixing can make it unsafe to swallow. Cost and Accessibility Many families and care providers are also going to consider cost, a major factor for many. While some thickening products may be covered by insurance or other healthcare plans, others may have to be paid for out of pocket. Bulk buying may be a cheaper option, but not all families have the space to keep items. The store or pharmacy availability affects decision-making. Selecting a budget-friendly option that is also readily available is responsible planning for the long haul. Education and Support for Caregivers Education on thickening products and safe swallowing practices is beneficial for caregivers as well. Download conference slides, training sessions, instructional materials, and community resources. Support groups provide the benefit of both compassion and insight. Better informed caregivers pave the way for safer environments and more confidence in delivering care. Conclusion Each person has unique needs, medical recommendations, and functional challenges, so selecting the most suitable thickening product requires thoughtful consideration. When chosen carefully, the right product helps individuals with swallowing difficulties enjoy safer, more satisfying meals and drinks. Staying in regular contact with healthcare professionals and reviewing needs as they change ensures ongoing support and effective care. With the right guidance, individuals can look forward to greater comfort, safety, and independence in daily living. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of DepositPhotos
- What Are the Best Cannabis Products for Relaxation
Image by DepositPhotos After a humid day, your shirt clings and your jaw feels tight on the ride home. Inside, the air cools fast, and your shoulders drop as the noise outside fades away. A cool drink helps, yet your mind keeps replaying the day as you unpack and wash up. Many visitors keep routines that span hotels, rentals, and home life in Canada. If you buy legally at home, the best online dispensary in Canada should list doses clearly. Clear labels and measured servings help you choose a relaxation product without guessing or overdosing. Start With The Type Of Relaxation You Want Relaxation can mean easier sleep, a calmer mood, or less muscle tension after long walking days. Each goal points to a product type and a timing plan that matches your evening schedule. It also affects how much scent, smoke, or gear you feel comfortable using in shared spaces. Cannabis can affect attention, reaction time, and short term memory, even at moderate doses today. That matters if you plan to drive, swim, or cross busy streets later the same night. You can review the CDC summary on cannabis health effects and safety. Before you choose a product, answer a few questions that shape your first experience overall. These answers help you avoid a dose that feels too heavy or too fast for you. Write the answers once, then keep them with travel notes so you can reuse them later. Do you want effects in minutes, or can you wait up to two hours instead? Do you prefer a lighter head feel, or a heavier body feel, before sleep tonight? Do you need low odor, because you share walls, hallways, or a balcony with other people? If you take prescription medicines, talk with your clinician about risks, side effects, and interactions. Alcohol can raise impairment, so skip mixing them on the same night you use cannabis. If you are new, start low, stay home, and keep the evening calm and simple. Flower And Pre-Rolls For Fast, Familiar Effects Flower and pre-rolls can work quickly, which suits nights when stress feels sharp and loud . Many people feel effects within minutes, and the peak arrives sooner than when using edibles. The trade-off is stronger odor, plus more throat and lung irritation for some users. Strain names are not reliable guides, so focus on the label and the batch details instead. Check THC and CBD amounts, and consider lower THC if you tend to feel anxious easily. Some people also watch terpene notes, but your response can still vary from one use. If you inhale, take one small draw, then wait ten to fifteen minutes before another. This pause lets you notice changes in body tension, breathing, and head pressure more calmly. Keep water nearby, and avoid quick redosing when you feel impatient, rushed, or distracted later. Edibles That Support Longer, Steadier Calm Image by DepositPhotos Edibles fit evenings when you want a longer window of quiet without repeated dosing at night. Many people prefer gummies, chocolates, or drinks because each serving is measurable and discreet at home. The main risk is taking more too soon, because the onset can feel slow at first. Edibles can take thirty minutes to three hours to reach full effect for many people. The University of Michigan notes this range and urges waiting the full window before more. You can check their timing notes and cautions on the University page at the link below. Start low, especially if you have not used edibles before or you have low tolerance. A common entry range is 2.5 to 5 milligrams THC, then you stop and wait fully. Wait three hours, and do not stack doses just because you feel nothing yet at first. Edible drinks can feel faster than solid foods for some people, but timing still varies. Gummies often last longer, which helps sleep but can feel heavy on early mornings sometimes. If you plan a sunrise beach walk , keep your dose and timing conservative the night before. Keep edibles in child resistant packaging, and label them if you transfer containers at home. Accidental ingestion is common, since gummies and chocolates look like normal snacks to kids very quickly. Treat edibles like medicine, and store them high, sealed, and well out of sight at home. Vapes And Concentrates When You Want Small, Measured Steps Vape pens feel convenient for short sessions, because dosing can happen in small puffs during travel. They can also reduce lingering smell compared with smoking flower in a shared building indoors. Potency can still be high, so slow pacing matters more than the device format alone. Read the oil type, because distillate and resin products can feel different for users at first. Take one small puff, then wait several minutes before you decide on another puff again. Keep sessions short, because the easy format can lead to overuse before you notice it. Concentrates like wax can deliver very high THC in a small amount of material sometimes. That strength can raise anxiety for some people, even when relaxation is the goal at night. If you are newer, it is safer to skip concentrates and stick with lower dose choices. Choose products that list ingredients and lab testing, and avoid unknown additives or thickeners inside. Store cartridges upright in a cool place, and keep batteries charged and clean each week. These habits reduce leaks, burnt taste, and wasted oil over time for many users in practice. CBD Forward Options And Topicals For Body First Ease CBD dominant products are often used for a milder experience with less intoxication in general. Some people choose them for daytime stress when they still want clear focus and energy. Effects can be subtle, so track changes across several uses instead of one trial over time. Tinctures and capsules can be easier to measure than flower, since labels show milligrams per dose With tinctures, hold the liquid under your tongue, then swallow after a short pause briefly. Start with a low amount, then adjust slowly across days, not across single evenings most. Topicals work differently, because they are used on skin for localized soreness and stiffness pain. After long walking days or gym sessions, a balm may support comfort in one area. Avoid broken skin, wash hands after use, and keep products away from eyes and lips. Image by DepositPhotos A Simple Pick List For A Calmer Evening If you want fast relief, choose low THC flower or a low dose vape, then stop early. If you want longer calm, choose a low dose edible, and wait the full window. If you want body ease, try a CBD forward tincture or a topical, then reassess slowly. For Canadians who split time between Miami and home, consistency matters more than potency alone. Look for clear labels, predictable dosing, and packaging that supports discreet storage and basic safety. A careful retailer earns trust by prioritizing testing, shipping privacy, and stable product information over time. The best choice fits your timing, your tolerance, and your plans for the next morning. Keep notes after each use, including dose, onset time, and any side effects you noticed. With patient pacing and safe storage, relaxation becomes more repeatable and less of a gamble. Practical Takeaway For Your Next Calm Night Pick one goal for the evening, then match it to a product type and a slow dosing plan. Keep THC low if you are newer, wait long enough between servings, and avoid mixing cannabis with alcohol. Store products safely, and write down dose and timing so you can repeat what worked and skip what did not. A calm night comes from measured choices, not stronger products. By ML Staff.
