Civil rights leader and Coconut Grove native Thelma V. Gibson marked her 99th birthday on December 19, 2025, with a luncheon fundraiser held at The Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, bringing together community leaders, business owners, healthcare professionals, and advocates from across Miami-Dade County.

Hosted by The Thelma Gibson Health Initiative (TGHI) in collaboration with the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Miami-Dade County, the event honored Gibson’s lifelong work advancing civil rights, education, health equity, and economic opportunity for women and Black communities in South Florida. Proceeds from the luncheon supported plans to renovate a newly acquired TGHI property that will serve as the organization’s permanent headquarters and a shared workspace for women in need.

Born and raised in Coconut Grove, Gibson attended segregated schools before graduating from George Washington Carver High School in 1944. She later earned her nursing degree from Saint Agnes School of Nursing at Saint Augustine’s College in North Carolina and returned to Miami to begin her career as a registered nurse. Her professional path unfolded amid systemic segregation and discrimination, experiences that shaped her transition into civil rights leadership and community organizing.

Over the decades, Gibson founded TGHI and later established the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Miami-Dade County, dedicating her work to education, financial literacy, mental health awareness, and community wellness. TGHI now serves low-income and disenfranchised residents throughout Miami-Dade County, addressing issues ranging from economic instability and health disparities to youth development and mental health support.

The December luncheon highlighted Gibson’s enduring influence and the continued relevance of her vision. The planned TGHI facility is intended to provide stability, resources, and collaborative space for women-led initiatives, reinforcing Gibson’s commitment to dignity and empowerment through community-based solutions.
