  • Elemental Superfood: Clean, Nutritional, Healthy Snacks

Nicole Anderson, the creator of Elemental Superfood, began making food at home years ago because of her daughter’s allergies to wheat, dairy, and sugar. If a product didn’t have one of these allergens, it usually had the other, so her options of what she could buy in a store were close to none. Being a mother of a child with autism, she realized first-hand the effects that these foods would have on her daughter’s well being. She made it her mission to research nutrition and food and the impact it has on the body. After seeing dramatic changes in her daughter as a result of a clean diet, she became passionate about creating foods that everyone she knew could enjoy and benefit from. Over the last few years, there has been an increasing awareness of and shift towards healthy foods and snacks. As a result, there is heightened demand for food products designed to help the many millions suffering from diseases, ailments, and allergies, as well as those merely seeking a healthier, more active lifestyle. Elemental Superfood fills that need, creating products with clean ingredients that never compromise texture and flavor. They offer their products in six flavors with two new Elemental Superfood Seedbar flavors that were just launched at the end of November. They are currently working to expand their product line with additional flavors and new food products. The Seedbar and Crumble are made with organic and pesticide-free raw seeds and nuts, contain no additives, no preservatives, no fillers and are made with high-quality ingredients rich in protein, fiber and omega-3s and omega-6s. They are designed to be consumed as a nutritional snack or a meal replacement and intended to provide functional benefits such as increased energy and a feeling of well-being. The products are great for health-conscious men and women of all ages – from busy students, active mothers and professionals needing healthy foods to keep them alert and focused, to outdoor enthusiasts seeking strength and endurance. Elemental Superfood’s mission is to provide the absolute best tasting snacks, using the highest quality ingredients, while raising awareness of current issues involving health, wellness, and the future of our planet. • Adriana Hoyos Furnishings: Creating Timeless & Luxurious Lifestyle Experiences

Meet designer Adriana Hoyos and her husband, Eduardo Perez D., President of AHC International Holdings. When Adriana Hoyos says she’s been around furniture design and art for as long as she can remember, she’s not exaggerating. Latin- American born, Miami-based, Adriana Hoyos sought a career in interior design in Ecuador where she was constantly challenged by the struggle of importing high-end furniture for her clients into the country. She decided to take matters into her own hands and began designing her own furniture, and with her husband, Eduardo Perez D., created Adriana Hoyos Furnishings. Eduardo is the co-founder and a visionary leader for the brand. Now, Miami has become the home and official headquarters for the brand. What made you choose Miami as the official headquarter of Adriana Hoyos Furnishings? Eduardo Perez D. CEO: The Corporate decision to move our commercial headquarters to Miami is due to Miami’s strategic location not only for the Latin American market but also for its active international market. Miami has become a metropolis on a great international scale and is desired by many not only for being a business hub but also for the various entertainment attractions, good living and glamour. The city of Miami also intertwines impeccably with our brand, as they are both stemmed from Latin American roots. Where is the manufacturing executed? The brand has its own manufacturing facilities throughout Latin America, and Miami is certainly the best place to be since it is a strategic commercial business hub. Adriana Hoyos Furnishings has been operating the American market since 2001 based in Miami. Now is the opportune moment to make a transition and to continue its international expansion. Click below to launch slideshow > We heard through the grapevine that you are launching a new collection, can you tell us about that? Adriana Hoyos: Yes. The Galapagos Collection is launching this month. The collection was inspired by the beauty, flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands. About a year ago my daughter, Andrea Perez, and I traveled to the archipelago on a project to furnish the new Celebrity Cruise Flora and we fell utterly and irrevocably in love with the island. Everything we saw, touched and smelled was completely unique, something people don’t get to witness every day. The shapes, colors and textures helped us disconnect completely and for a second… we felt whole. This feeling of “wholeness” motivated us to create a greater connection with the wild and celebrate it through our designs. I remember as if it were yesterday, exploring the island and discovering its creatures and foliage. As we walked along the coastline we saw a majestic sea lion resting on a rock and it glimmered with the sun’s reflection, which helped us capture its silhouette perfectly. When we came back home we reminisced and remembered the view of the beautiful sea lion.... and we both looked at each other and we knew we were thinking the same thing. That’s when our collection’s ideation began, and the sea lion inspired our very first product of the collection, a sofa. Every sleek silhouette is directly inspired by the wild’s splendor, whether it be the hard shell of a turtle to the splendid curves of a cacti. It’s easy to forget where we came from in today’s world. Now, more than ever, it’s good for us to take a step back, breathe it all in and invite nature in. By ML Staff. • How Can you be Safe at a Pool, the Beach or a Park?

Even if we escaped getting sick from the coronavirus, we are all sick of staying at home, practicing social distancing and wearing masks. While case numbers and deaths from COVID-19 are trending downward, this is not the time to let down your guard. These are not ordinary days. These novel days call on us to make decisions with limited and evolving information. The coronavirus is still circulating. As a physician who has practiced for over 30 years, I find myself facing the decisions about safe outdoor recreation with some trepidation. The decision about whether to go to a beach, a pool or a park was previously pretty simple – now, not so much. On one hand, there is too much information, some of it conflicting and much of it infused with political ideology. On the other, there is a lack of information – the “novel” in novel coronavirus means it’s new and there is much we don’t know. While it remains as true as ever that there are tremendous benefits to going outside these days, it’s also true there are risks to yourself and to others in doing so. How to decide whether you and your loved ones can go hiking, beaching or swimming? Let’s begin with some facts that we actually do know. We know that the virus can be carried asymptomatically, and we know that there are people at disproportionately high risk of serious complications. We scientists and doctors don’t know yet if having antibodies is indicative of immunity, so a positive antibody test doesn’t mean you’re good to go without risk. We know that the number of virus particles you are exposed to and the duration of exposure are vital factors determining risk of transmission. Also, at least one preprint study, which has not been peer-reviewed, found that the risk of outdoor exposure is much less than that indoors. But I want to be outside Now that almost all states have opened back up, in varying degrees, it is important to remember that the virus is still out there. The risks of getting infected when passing by a runner or cyclist fairly quickly are not terribly high, at least in the absence of a sneeze or cough, and are even lower at a distance. Solitary activities transmit fewer particles than team sports or horseplay in the pool. Going alone or only with the people in your quarantine bubble will minimize your risk. Proximity to people outside your bubble means you should wear a mask properly to protect others. The quarantine bubble is shorthand for a small group of friends you may choose to get together with who have followed social distancing guidelines and whom you know to be healthy. The safety of your bubble, however, is only as good as the agreement between members to follow safety precautions outside the bubble. Look at the logistics of your plan. It’s worth breaking your intended activity down to basic steps. How will you get there? Remember, public transportation and air travel are still high-risk. And, if you are driving on the highway or interstate, remember that you might need to stop for bathroom breaks. In the spirit of “better safe than sorry,” if you do travel long distances by car, bring your own food and water as well as a hygiene kit containing wipes, paper towels, travel soap and sanitizer. What will I need while there? Consider the need for bathroom breaks, food and water, your ability to wash hands and maintain distance. Bathrooms and changing rooms are full of “high touch” surfaces, and while definitive information is lacking, early evidence demonstrates virus persistence on surfaces. You should treat public bathrooms as high-risk areas and keep in mind that many may not even be open. A sink in a bathroom is closed off to enforce social distancing. Ronald Martinez/Getty Images Once at your destination, remember the coronavirus basics. Keep a distance of at least six feet. Wash and disinfect your hands often – and definitely after touching any shared surface. Keep your hands away from your face. Wear a mask. If at a park, walk or hike single file and leave room for others to pass at a safe distance. Consider going at off-peak hours and to less popular locations. If going to the beach, you still need to wear a mask. And keep your distance. If going to the pool, remember that although there is no evidence of spread through water that has been treated per recommendations, common areas require distancing, masks and the other usual precautions. Remember the real estate adage “location, location, location.” The virus prevalence and the slope – whether cases are rising or falling – in your area matter. Also, the availability of testing and of hospital beds in your area are things to consider. You should take into account the regulations and laws in your area, understanding that they may not reflect public health guidelines. If in doubt, err on the side of protection. Factors out of your control Finally, there is the wild card of figuring out what the people around you will be doing to protect you as you are deciding how you will protect yourself, your loved ones and them. Will they respect your space and wear masks? The final word on outdoor recreation? Of course, go out and be active. It’s important for your mental and physical health. But, choose wisely, be prepared and stay safe. Words by Claudia Finkelstein, Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Michigan State University. Special thanks to The Conversation for this story. • Rising Tide Car Wash’s Management Program Trains Recent College Graduates To Be Inclusive Leaders

In an effort to train recent college graduates to be inclusive leaders, Rising Tide Car Wash, a groundbreaking social enterprise with a primary mission to employ adults with autism, is launching its Operations Management & Leadership Development Program for high-caliber recent college graduates. As the company prepares to open its third location, in Coral Springs, in late 2021 or early 2022, the program is a critical element of its expansion plans. It already has locations in Parkland and Margate. The program is also a large lever for impact, as it will develop leaders who challenge the status quo and inspire their communities to build a better future. The program is a two-year commitment, after which these leaders may move on to other opportunities in their careers and spread the inclusive business practices they learned with Rising Tide Car Wash. Rising Tide Car Wash developed the program to teach trainees the skills that they need to lead, with them or anywhere. It is designed to help them grow from raw potential through management and leadership skill development, to mastery of many operational and managerial disciplines. Trainees will learn and practice Rising Tide Car Wash’s cornerstones for inclusive leadership, which are Drive Organizational Clarity, Deliberately Develop Employees, Design for our Users, Build Psychological Safety, Create Accountability, and Cultivate Purpose. “We’re looking for talented people to help us build a world-class service organization that employs individuals with autism for the majority of our staff,” said John D’Eri, co-founder and CEO of Rising Tide Car Wash. “We believe that achieving this goal is the most effective way to close the opportunity gap for individuals with autism. We want people who want to work hard to be the best version of themselves and who want to help others do the same.” Rising Tide Car Wash’s founders and senior management will train participants to be a manager at one of the company’s locations, where they will be responsible for leading a team to achieve four core objectives: to provide exceptional service, offer clean and well-maintained facilities, develop employees, and grow location profitability. Participants will work through eight phases of growth, through which they will complete a robust training program with more than 60 video learning modules, and receive on-the-job training and coaching. Over the course of the program, participants will receive consistent feedback and coaching. Those leading the program will teach business and operational cornerstones that differentiate Rising Tide Car Wash from most organizations. Trainees will gain hands-on experience working alongside more than 70 individuals with autism, and directly influencing their lives. They will get to know them, help them grow as people and as professionals, and help pave the way for many more to have the same opportunities as the rest of society. Currently, unemployment among people with autism is approximately 85 percent, and at least 500,000 more individuals with autism will enter the workforce in the next decade. Rising Tide Car Wash brings an increased awareness to the community at large about the importance of employing individuals on the autism spectrum, and their capability to participate in and contribute to the community. Rising Tide Car Wash, a high-quality car wash, is one of the largest employers of people with autism in the U.S. Rising Tide Car Wash and its consultants created an innovative model that breaks the car washing process into 46 distinct steps. Employees work in a mirror image of each other and are able to thrive off the repetitive structure to produce extraordinary results.
