- Amare: All You Eat is Love
Love and food? It’s unquestionable, these two are inextricably tied. Whether it’s love for food or food for love —who hasn’t cooked their way into someone’s heart? — everyone can agree that the two live in an emotional, and quite intimate, affair. Which is why Amare (“to love”), with all its coastal Italian charm, is so spot-on. It can romance your senses and, in a snap, leave you smitten. Good looks and impeccable taste will usually take you a long way, so it’s no wonder this newly-debuted eatery snagged a spot in the coveted South of Fifth district. It’s a buongiorno signora kind of place, where the overall demeanor is both courteous and pleasant, and where the color palette evokes the beauty of the Amalfi coast. Azure, white, and coral hues spill over the dining room décor, while the floor and bar are made up of hand-painted ceramic tiles flown in from Naples. And as I look up at the ceiling, white chiffon waves flow rhythmically. Every detail seems to fit perfectly with the next, creating a smooth harmony. As I am escorted to my table, I pass by the arched 12-seated bar located in the center of the room. It’s looks quite inviting, maybe I’ll have a drink there later. And just to the left, I almost miss what I soon find out is the Neapolitan espresso bar and Dolci Station. I know I’ll definitely be asking for some of that goodness to top off dinner. As I’m handed the menu, Jerry, the maître d’, gives us the inside scoop: the what, when and where. Restaurateur Gino Iovino, who also owns award-winning restaurant Girasole in Atlantic City, in partnership with Michelin-starred Chef Cosimo Cassano and Franco Ricatti, created this amazing concept. He goes on to reveal how every dish is made in-house with seasonal ingredients flown in from Italy, including San Marzano tomatoes, olive oils, and pasta di Gragnano from Naples. And, of course, he takes his time to show off the signature dishes and specialties –which are well worth boasting about. I know we’re in the best of hands, so I just go with it. I’m taking a leap of food-faith (if there’s such a thing), but I suppose you can’t go wrong if the suggestions come from the chef himself. First off, some white wine to get the taste buds going, even though the cocktails sound amazing, especially the Amare. And then, as the menu so wisely states it, The Love Affair Begins with the Melanzane e Zucchine, which is an eggplant lasagna with zucchini, mozzarella, basil and Parmesan cheese; the Carpaccio Amare with artichokes, asparagus, shaved Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle salt; and the Fiori di Zucca e Baccalà, which are zucchini blossoms filled with Atlantic cod and robiola —my own personal favorite. Needless to say, every dish was exquisite in its own way. Click below to launch slideshow > Next, the famed pasta. I’m excited the chef sent us the Pasta Degustazione, because three is always better than one: the Spaghettini Neri, which consists of squid-ink spaghetti, king crab, artichoke, chardonnay, and bottarga di muggine; the Cappellacci di Branzino, which are sea bass-filled ravioli with mascarpone, Sorrento lemon, butter, and sage; and the Casarecce, which is Tuscan kale pesto, Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, and toasted almonds —two words: Oh wow. I could feel the purity of the flavors in every bite. But the real treat —and star—of the night is the Branzino al Sale. The fish comes out enveloped in a thick layer of salt, and Jerry, very delicately, goes on to crack it open. It’s a savory sideshow that only makes the sea bass more special, with its buttery texture and unsurpassed taste. Of course we can’t leave without dessert. We try convincing ourselves that we’ll only have a few bites, but that’s a lie. So here come the Croccantino and the Delizia al Limone. One is chilled Zambaione, caramelized almonds, and dark chocolate chips; the other is Sorrento lemon and vanilla cream. Both are the perfect ending to a very authentic and homey dining experience. As I’m leaving, I take a moment to acknowledge the relaxed ambience out on the terrace. The cutest tables with hand-painted ceramic tiles surrounded by bougainvillea and lemon trees. I guess if you want to do some South Beach people watching in style, it doesn’t get better than this. Amare, when people ask about our first date, I’ll say: it was love at first taste. - Light the Night to "Light Up" Fort Lauderdale's Downtown, March 1-7
Get ready for Light the Night, when buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale will come alive with spectacular video projection displays the first week of March. A collaboration of Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art & Design Program and the creative solutions firm, MAD, Light the Night is the first activation of its kind in Broward County, incorporating innovative 3D projection mapping technology to project new site-specific artworks by South Florida artists onto three buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Featuring newly commissioned projection mapping videos by Agustina Woodgate, Jen Clay, Edison Peñafiel and Monica Lopez de Victoria, Light the Night’s nightly activations of light, color and motion – some spanning 10 stories high – will be displayed March 1-7 weeknights from 7-10 pm and the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) from 7-11 pm on the facades of Broward County Government Center (115 S. Andrews Ave.), NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale (One East Las Olas Blvd.) and Society Las Olas (301 SW 1st Ave.). The buildings are located within walking distance of each other. Light the Night provides a unique outdoor art experience for the public in a low-density environment. Health and safety reminders will also be projected onto the buildings and Broward County public health guidelines must be followed. The activations will also feature video art by Quisqueya Henriquez, Susanne M. Winterling, Samson Kambalu, Raul Ferrera-Balanquet, Diana Shpungin, Rachel Perry and Samantha Salzinger, courtesy of the collections of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and the Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz collection at Girls' Club, along with video art by artists Jen Stark, David Lewandowski and Matthew Schreiber. Rather than using a conventional screen, projection mapping, also known as video mapping, uses a physical space or object as a surface for the projection. The pieces produced are adapted to each space, and are then mapped to its surfaces, giving the projection architectural dimensionality that transforms flat surfaces into dynamic art filled with moving patterns, lights and animations. Broward Cultural Division Director Phillip Dunlap said, “Partnering with MAD enabled us to provide a unique opportunity for local artists to learn how to use this cutting-edge technology and work with a creative team to expand their artistic practice. We look forward to presenting the results of their work to the public.” Light the Night was curated by Sofia Bastidas Vivar, who noted, “This creative mapping technology is not only a great way to showcase these artists throughout the city, but also serves as a new outlet for artists to see the city as a space where they can envision large-scale projection artworks.” For more information, visit ArtsCalendar.com/LighttheNight. - Can The Golden Globes Shine Again?
Sunday night’s 78th annual Golden Globes à la Zoom meeting had a few memorable takeaways, but the most glaringly obvious theme was the immense imperfection of a once fairytale like industry. There was a much needed call to change from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Golden Globes know they have to evolve, but we wonder will they actually commit to this change in the coming years? This year’s award ceremony didn’t have the usual glamorous smoke screens to hide behind. The stars were literally just like us. Sitting at home on their couches. Some in tie dye hooded sweatshirts, others in custom made couture gowns, but no matter what dress code you chose for the night, everyone shared in the same unifying feeling….that no one wanted to hop on this Zoom call. Like most events during these past 12 months leaving us under a spell of “weirdom,” the Golden Globes were no exception. They were strange. It felt strange. And no one was hiding this fact. There was also the lingering sense that no one really wanted to participate in this faux style award show. Even the iconic Beverly Hilton Hotel looked like a ghostly prop-background set. What once was the hottest ticket in town, leaving many journalists and party crashers wondering how to get up close and personal with celebrities, lost its glitz and glam this year. The most important achievement though, was the effort to deliver an award show abiding by CDC guidelines and safety protocols, which was globally appreciated and recognized. Despite the hiccups of static wifi connections along the way, no one can deny this year’s virtual event was the safest and most practical way to conduct the award ceremony, if they were going to have a show at all. But it certainly doesn’t fill the void, or mimic the spectacle of the ceremony from years past. Have we finally reached the moment where the Golden Globes have lost their luster? Since the #Metoo movement first gained its national momentum, followed by the TimesUp organization, it seems that Hollywood has faced year after year backlash and scandal. Award ceremonies as of late have adopted a new tone, a call to change, trying to use their platform as best they can to call for more diversity in areas of race and gender equality. This year, members of the HFPA took accountability and ownership for their lack of diversity. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made their own jabs, masked in a comedy routine, during their opening bi-coastal dialogue which also condemned the HFPA for not having a diverse panel. We did see some change this year on the “web”carpet side, swapping a tired Ryan Seacrest for Karamo Brown to join Guiliana Rancic for E!’s live broadcast. The Golden Globes have historically been the “fun” award show out of the long string of events that make up award season. It’s less serious than the Oscars, and welcomes both film and television big wigs, increasing the star power of attendees. This year’s feeling of suspense involved glitchy wifi signals, leaving us all with minute by minute wonderment if we would miss important moments due to poor connection. (We almost didn’t get to see Daniel Kaluuya’s acceptance speech, while a confused Laura Dern looked to the camera and audience unsure how to proceed.) As noted by our Zoom moderators, Tina and Amy pointed out that the celebrities and nominees were not the ones enjoying the in person event. “Tonight our audience on both coasts is made up of smoking hot essential workers…so our celebrities can stay safely at home.” And stay home the celebrities did, swapping red carpet posing for at home ring light photoshoots. The fashion trend of this year’s award show, if we had to pick a trend, was high brow vs. low brow looks. Does anything encapsulate this more than Bill Murray in a Hawaiian (non designer) shirt, martini glass in hand as his accessory? In the past, Amanda Seyfried wore fresh off the runway Givenchy gowns. This year she sat on her conference call, still stunning, in Oscar de la Renta while commenting on how great it is to share her nomination with her children present. And it was heartwarming seeing nominees side by side with their families and pets around the world. From the Sorkin family couch, to Nicole Kidman in Louis Vuitton sitting side by side with her husband and children. Jodie Foster and her wife sharing a kiss with their dog in between. Regina King celebrating her best director nomination in a black and silver Louis Vuitton sequence gown… with her dog sleeping in frame. Sarah Paulson turned her arm injury into an envious fashion moment, matching a custom purple Prada cast to her sleek textured gown. But it’s safe to assume we have a new reigning best dressed Queen, Ana Taylor Joy, who won the Golden Globe in her category. She stole the virtual “web”carpet in a royal green Dior Haute Couture Gown, accessorized in over $1 million dollars of Tiffany diamonds. That brought us all back down to Earth quickly. But the only unique appeal to this year’s Golden Globes was the human relatability, a poignant message given the global strife were all still facing. Inspired by the Footsteps to Follow concept, Serena and Stuart Weitzman partnered to select Judith Martinez, Founder and CEO of InHerShoes Movement as the next Stuart Weitzman x Vital Voices grant recipient. Her nonprofit is centered on empowering the next generation of girls and women to live beyond fear and redefine their futures through one question: What would you do if you were 1% more courageous? This donation marks the fifth grant made from the company’s foundation on behalf of Stuart Weitzman. The talented group of fashion forces behind the scenes of the SW x SW campaigns reconvened to bring Footsteps to Follow to life. This includes photographer and director Ethan James Green, whose body of work is dedicated to elevating inner beauty, as well as the unique eye of stylist and Garage Fashion Director Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. They were joined by makeup artist Natasha Gross and hair stylist Angela Meadows, who also returned this season to create bold new looks that highlight Serena’s confidence. In addition, the Spring 2021 Campaign also features the photography of renowned still-life photographer Robin Broadbent. With his exquisite and illustrative aesthetic, he elevates the detailed beauty and craftsmanship of each silhouette.
