  • Kalesma Mykonos is Now Open

Kalesma Mykonos opens today, inviting guests to experience authentic Mykonian hospitality in style. The property sits atop a hillside overlooking Ornos bay, each suite offering an unobstructed water view. Reception is at the pinnacle – stylishly decorated with Rick Owens furniture – along with the restaurant, Pere Ubu. From here, guests can catch both the sunrise and the sunset, with the aroma of freshly baking bread constantly hanging in the air. (A local baker will be making bread in the property’s brick oven throughout the day.) The 25 suites and two villas all have a private deck with a full-sized pool overlooking the Aegean Sea. Greek designers K-Studio (the architect behind the new Mykonos Airport) and Vangelis Bonios of Studio Bonarchi have used local materials such as wood, marble, stone and osier to give a contemporary look to traditional Cycladic style. The cool earth tones like taupe, grey, dark brown and charcoal blend together with white-washed surfaces and bougainvillea-filled archways to give a strong sense of place and to allow the brilliant blue of the Aegean Sea to stand out. The suites stand out with their thoughtful touches such as the night blooming jasmine planted outside each suite perfuming the evening air, the TVs that seemingly disappear out of view, and the custom artwork by Serbian artist Aleksander Vak. At 680 sq. ft., the suites accommodate up to three adults, or two adults and two children. Each will feature private 970 sq. ft. terraces. Kalesma’s two- and three-bedroom villas can be rented together to sleep larger groups. At 2,600 sq. ft. each, both villas will have an open-plan living room with separate dining areas, a fully equipped kitchen with a pre-stocked refrigerator, wine fridge and private chef available upon request. Additional amenities will include a private gym and 24/7 butler service. Guests can also book in-room spa treatments. For a truly unique vantage point, guests can venture up to Pere Ubu which offers locally sourced Cycladic specialties such as cheese saganaki with three local cheeses, spicy honey, thyme and roasted almonds and toasted octopus with sun dried tomatoes and olives. While offering international wines, the wine list places an emphasis on Greek wines such as Assyrtiko from Santorini, rosé from the Peloponnese, and orange wine (a very popular style in Greece). The signature cocktail, the Mediterraneo, is made with Greek Mastiha – a unique liqueur from Mastiha trees found only on the island Chios – infused with thyme and lime. The restaurant embodies Kalesma’s community ethos with nightly sunset celebrations, evening DJ entertainment and weekly culinary events like intimate dinners exclusively for Kalesma’s guests. All are encouraged to partake in the lighthearted island lifestyle over dinner – and plenty of wine – before sleeping soundly just down the hill. Known for their hotspots in Athens – Sea Spice, Pere, and Ubu – the seasoned trio behind Kalesma are all local to the island; the land has been in one of the owner’s family for over 100 years. While Mykonos is known for its social life, Kalesma invites guests to see the full picture of the island – from its mythological history (the hotel sits where Apollo is said to have kept his horses) to its Venetian town and artisan shops. Though they can certainly recommend the most fun beaches to see and be seen, the concierge team can also suggest hidden coves off-the-beaten track or a private yacht charter to nearby Delos, considered the most sacred of all islands in antiquity. It’s been said that there are as many churches on Mykonos as there are local families, and a quick scan of the white-washed skyline underscores the anecdote. The abundance is largely due to the number of ancestral churches built on private property. Kalesma’s own chapel can serve as a picturesque backdrop for weddings. There are flights to Athens from several US cities including New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia and from Athens it’s just a 40-minute flight or a 2.5-hour high speed ferry to Mykonos. Suite rates begin at $1,200 and villas at $3,500 per night. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Kalesma Mykonos

  • This Father’s Day Let Him Discover the Finest Flavors & Rich Aromas of L’OR, a Masterpiece in Taste

Created in France in 1992, L’OR’s ambition has always been to offer the best coffee in the world. Since then, L’OR has seduced senses of the consumers by providing them with intense taste experiences for fantastic coffee moments. In 2010, L’OR Espresso launched- the first espresso capsule compatible with Nespresso®* Original coffee machines. Types of Espresso Drinks Explained Ristretto Coming from the Italian for “restrained, tight”, a Ristretto is a very short espresso. It is especially appreciated for its body and its aromatic richness. Espresso Also known by the name, tight coffee, it is appreciated for its generous smoothness and is made via high-pressure percolation (in Italian, espresso means “extracted by pressure”). Espressos are available in many blends, each one offering a specific intensity. L’OR Espresso preserves the essence of each blend in an aluminum capsule specifically packaged to release all of the espresso aromas in the cup. Lungo Also known as a long coffee, it is made with twice as much water running through the same amount of coffee as for an espresso. L’OR Espresso Lungos are specifically designed to produce a large cup (110ml) of a long and intense espresso with a perfect consistency. Espresso Experiences Cappuccino One of the most popular milky coffee drinks. Originated in Italy, the cappuccino has an espresso at its base and is topped with hot milk and a dense layer of micro-foam. Macchiato A macchiato is basically an espresso with a dollop of steamed milk and foam on top of it. The milk slightly calms the harshness of the espresso and therefore makes a perfect drink for those who enjoy an espresso, but with a little less kick. Latte Macchiato Probably one of the most photogenic drinks. With its typical three layers, the latte macchiato is often served in a long glass so those layers can be shown. It contains mostly steamed milk, marked with espresso and a little foam layer on top. Flat White Originated in Australia, the flat white needs a little more explanation, as there appear to be several views on how a flat white should be made. You will find that different countries and cafés have different takes on serving the flat white. One way to serve it, is a shot of espresso with steamed milk, so no foam at all. Another, more common but also more advanced way to serve the flat white, is by swirling a milk- and micro-foam mixture into a shot of espresso, aiming not to let the foam separate from the milk. Today, the unequalled quality of L’OR espresso continues to seduce connoisseurs all over the world. It’s the uniqueness and beauty in our world that inspires our coffee artists to create our delicious L’OR espresso blends. From preparation to tasting, discover a unique espresso moment with L’OR. Each cup of L'OR espresso is an opportunity to live in the moment- to follow your senses and indulge in pure bliss. • MOCA North Miami Presents “After the Rain Comes Light: Portraits of Resilience” Through Sept. 26

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to present “After the Rain Comes Light: Portraits of Resilience,” the first collaborative museum exhibition by Miami-based artists Morel Doucet and Stephen Arboite. The new work will be on view both inside and outside of the museum building. A series of unique banners are installed on MOCA Plaza as part of the museum's “Art on the Plaza" program and in celebration of Haitian Heritage Month. The original, collaged artworks will be on view in the museum from May 19 through Sept. 26. Taking as inspiration the flora, fauna, and people of North Miami, each artist brings their unique practice to a series of nine collaborative portraits. The exhibition was derived from a social media open call to North Miami residents and visitors to share their own portraits. Doucet and Arboite then created the nine collages based on these submissions, incorporating local plants, leaves, and flowers from the neighborhood’s streets and green spaces. The gesture of meshing the silhouettes of individuals with local greenery produces both a tender yet firm position of intention, identity, and place, a reaction against the accelerated pace of development that aggressively seeks new land and causes displacement. “When we explore each neighborhood, we can see they are in some way sacred to the people who live there,” stated artists Arboite and Doucet. “The land harbors their cultural history, legacies, and shared nostalgia. Tropical foliage and front yard gardens are like gatekeepers of time—they anchor the dreams and hopes of the people.” Doucet, a graduate of New World School of the Arts with the Distinguished Dean’s Award for Ceramics, showcases here his two-dimensional practice. The works are created using mylar, aerosol paint, ink, indigenous plants, and coffee filters, and build upon a trajectory in Doucet’s body of work which tracks and reveals the conflicts of what he calls “climate-gentrification.” His artwork celebrates the uniqueness and beauty of the African diaspora within Miami’s historically African American neighborhoods—Little Haiti, Overtown, Allapattah, and Liberty City—and over the past several years, Doucet has gathered various flora and fauna from these communities to create ecological drawings in the forms of abstract portraiture of the residents that live in these districts. Arboite brings to these portraits delicate linework, composition, and a sensitivity to texture honed through his studies at Purchase College for Drawing and Painting in New York State. At times, the surfaces of his works appear to be derived through alchemy, with natural cracking and fissures resembling the baked surface of the earth or geological crystallizations caused by ancient chemical reactions. Similarly enigmatic, the titles of the works cannot be overlooked as colors and forms emerge through their poetic sensibility: “The seeker under the sun,” “Today I saw the water, and it brought me closer to self,” “To walk in Midnight Veil and Shades of Sapphire,” “To Glow Under the Rose Moon,” and “Caramelized Brown Skin Dances in Sultry Summer.” “We are proud to host this stunning exhibition at MOCA and have the opportunity to work with these talented local artists,” said MOCA Executive Director Chana Sheldon. “This thoughtful project that thrived from the amazing response to the artists’ call for portraits from North Miami visitors and residents further confirms the museum's dedication to connecting to our surrounding community inside and outside of the museum.” The installation is curated by Amanda Sanfilippo Long. “Large-scale flags of the portraits were created as part of MOCA’s ‘Art on the Plaza’ series to activate the plaza during Haitian Heritage Month, transforming the museum’s entrance into a space for joy and reflection,” said Sanfilippo Long. “Each flag was attached to a palm tree, soaring to the sky and proclaiming a presence: we are here.” MOCA North Miami exhibitions and programs are made possible with the continued support of the North Miami Mayor and Council and the City of North Miami, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and the Green Family Foundation. “Art on the Plaza” is presented by MOCA, with Major Support from the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (NMRCA). • The Virtual Creative World of Reed + Rader

Meet the talented minds behind the creative agency Reed + Rader. Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader from Ohio and Pennsylvania combined their talents to create the agency back in the 2000s. Focusing on directing films, gifs and virtual reality experiences, their work is often set in virtual worlds that are colorful, wild and lets viewers escape to magical worlds. Mom and Dad to 5 cats, basketball fans, farmers on the weekend, they both reside in Brooklyn, NY. WHAT’S THE PROCESS FOR COMING UP WITH IDEAS WHEN YOU WORK WITH BRANDS? We’ve been lucky enough to build our brand based on our style so usually when a brand comes to us they are looking for us to put Reed + Rader spin on it. We work hand in hand with clients to figure out how their next campaign can fit into our world. More specifically, after we discuss the brief with a client, we sit just the two of us, and brainstorm for hours. Lots of bad drawings on the board, googling and watching videos. We’ve learned that time is the best team member when it comes to ideas, sometimes we’ll have the big idea in 30 minutes, sometimes 6 hours, sometimes we’ll need to come back the next day. HOW DOES TECHNOLOGY AFFECT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY? Technology plays a big role in our work and it continues to push us. We started doing very traditional large format photography and nowadays we’re doing completely 3D projects that use motion capture and end up as virtual reality. We’ve followed our hearts on what we like and where we think photography is headed. HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECT YOU AND YOUR ART? It’s pretty much expected that you take into consideration social media as an artist working in web/film. When working on a job, we’ll be thinking about how it will play out on Instagram, Tumblr and user interaction. We don’t necessarily think likes = success, but they are usually very important to clients. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? Right now is the calm before the storm. Gearing up for multiple projects in pre-production. On the personal front, we’re working on a VR project called Cat Showdown which is a look into the sinister underbelly world of cats vs mice. HOW’D YOU GUYS GET INTO GIFS? We were doing still photography until 2007 and were really bored with it. We decided to stop taking pictures and move to gifs. By 2008 we were only creating gifs and films. It made sense to us that gifs were created for the web, and the internet was our audience so we should be creating work for that crowd. It might seem silly now to think gifs were a hard pitch, but in 2007 (and years after that) clients/magazines were still not sold on the gif format. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOUR WORK? We’re always working on what’s next. We are in love with technology so we’re constantly dabbling with secret hardware, software and seeing how it can relate to our work. We are extremely excited for virtual reality, on a personal and professional level. DO YOUR PARENTS LIKE YOUR WORK? Our parents are supportive but honestly they have no idea what the hell we’re doing For more info visit Reed + Rader. Interview courtesy of The Bosco. The creative agency pioneers in delivering unique photo experiences and pushing the creative boundaries. With a team of designers, artists, and engineers The Bosco has delivered creative projects for the biggest brands and agencies around the world.

  • Original BTC Introduces "Fin King" & "Fin Queen" Bone China Table Lights

Now available, the Fin King and Fin Queen table lights are the latest installments in BTC's celebrated Fin collection. These table lights mark a new direction for the brand, combining their trademark bone china with the addition of a drum shade. A first for Original BTC, the ivory linen shade casts a soft, diffused light, creating beautiful shadows on the intricate base. Available in King and Queen sizes, the Fin’s base is hand slip-cast in Stoke-on-Trent using a complex eight-piece mold. Liquid clay, or slip, is poured into the mold and allowed to set, then the segments are separated to reveal the ribbed form, ready for firing and glazing. The Fin is finished with lacquered, brushed solid brass details and a signature cotton braided cable in a pale gray, while the shade sits on an angle-able ball and socket to facilitate reading. Established in 1990, Original BTC designs lighting for both residential and commercial interiors. After Founder Peter Bowles rescued a Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory from closure in 2002, the warm tones and opaque appearance of bone china soon became a signature of Original BTC. The brand continues to use the material extensively to produce new and diverse collections.
