- Where to Spot Celebrities in Miami
The stars love the Magic City. If you want to see celebrities in Miami, or just live like one during your vacation, you need to know where to go. The best part is, these A-list vacations are more accessible than you might think. Since the heyday of Ol' Blue Eyes and his pleasure-seeking Rat Pack, stars have been drawn to the glitter of Miami. And who could blame them? An itinerary of beautiful beaches, trendy restaurants, swanky shopping, stunning people and seductive evenings make for a celeb-worthy vacation. But what if you’re not a celebrity? No matter. In Miami, even regular folks like you and me can have an A-list vacation. Top-Notch Hotels There was a time when the trendiest hotels were out of reach to anyone but the most well off. That was, of course, until someone realized that money looked the same no matter whose pocket it came from. Prices vary, but opting to pay higher rates might be worth it if you’re looking for private butler service and a personal entertainment assistant. In Miami, The Setai is one celebrity hotel of choice. The experience begins at the Miami International Airport. A car service driver greets you at the airport, then whisks you away in the hotel’s black Range Rover. Hot, aromatic towels and snacks revive you during the short ride to Miami Beach. At this Art Deco landmark, you’ll be indulged just like Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady. The Setai has its own celebrity wing – the residential tower. The tower has expansive suites, a concierge and butler service and a modest lobby (which isn't encouraging to fans). Other celebrity-preferred hotels in Miami are the ultra chic Shore Club and the sophisticated Ritz-Carlton South Beach, where “no” isn’t in the staff’s vocabulary. Now, what celebrity – or celebrity for a day – wouldn’t relish that type of service? South Beach Allure If you’re in Florida for the beaches, why not make it a day worthy of celebrities in Miami under the sun? Stars love to while away the day on South Beach for the quintessential Miami beach experience. The beach is on Ocean Drive, across the street from many famous nightclubs. I have lounged away many an afternoon on this beach among serious sunbathers who are as likely to chat in French, Spanish, Portuguese or German as in English. Swanky Shopping After relaxing on the beach, fashionistas such as Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston and, ahem, myself like to drop a credit card (or just window shop) at Bal Harbour Shops. With a collection of luxurious retail stores that would be hard to find side-by-side almost anywhere else in the world (outside of Paris or New York), this high-end retail center has a who’s-who fashion directory: Bulgari, Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Tiffany, Gianni Versace and dozens more. A-List Spas Take a cue from Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez and treat yourself to one of Miami’s world-renowned spas. The Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, Miami is a favorite among celebrities in Miami and everyday folks alike. The Spa doesn’t just give you a foot rub and send you home – it creates a custom treatment for each customer based on their needs and desires. A celeb favorite at The Spa is the Kundalini Journey, which combines aromatherapy and advanced massage techniques with gemstone therapy to achieve an enhanced level of physical and mental relaxation. I treated myself to their Ayurvedic Holistic Body Treatment. As I sipped a relaxing herbal tea, my feet soaked in warm, petal-scattered water while the therapist massaged the reflex zones on my feet. A gentle, full-body exfoliation was followed by a warm shower. Usually, this would be the end of the spa treatment, but this is celebrity Miami. After a nourishing facial cleanse, I surrendered to the Ayurvedic Marma Points Massage. A warm infusion of aromatic oils and herbs were applied to the vital energy centers of my face and body. My ritual concluded with a deeply relaxing Oriental head massage. Every fiber of my skin released tension. On my euphoric stroll out of the spa, I thanked the Ayurvedic gods that these treatments are available to anyone. In addition to The Spa, also worth noting is the sun-filled spa at the Biltmore. With discerning guests such as Christina Aguilera and Cameron Diaz, the Biltmore Spa delivers stellar pampering. (Also of note: In early 2011, the Biltmore's Palme d'Or was rated the best restaurant in Miami by the Zagat Survey.) Dining and Dancing with the Stars What you’ve heard about Miami’s dining and nightlife is no overstatement. What you may not know is where to chow down and live it up, star-style. The Italian fare at Casa Tua is not a trend; it’s a showcase of lifestyle – good life, good art, good wine and good service. From the moment you pass under the trees that hide this Mediterranean villa from the frenzy of Miami, you’ll understand what I mean. Warm lights spill from a doorway and small lanterns twinkle from trees. A friendly gentleman welcomes you as if receiving you at his home – which is, of course, the point of Casa Tua, or “your house.” Prime 112, Azul and The Forge are also considered A-list restaurants among celebs. If you’re looking for a glitzy evening, the endless nightlife options may seem daunting. However, there are a few sure-bets for a see-and-be-seen experience. Mansion is among the hottest nightclubs. Meanwhile South Beach’s sexy Mango’s morphs from a restaurant by day into a lounge by night where beautiful people party with celebs like Ricky Martin, Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson into the wee hours. Celebrities gravitate to the “Sexiest Place on Earth,” Nikki Beach Miami. Nikki lives up to its reputation as a party playground for jetsetters, celebrities, VIPs and people just like you and me. On weekends, my friends love the “Amazing Sunday” party that brings the international elite and beautiful locals together for an all-day soiree. From fire performances and stilt walkers to costumed dancers and runway shows, Amazing Sundays make star-worthy spectacles accessible to all. Jamie Foxx, Colin Farrell and Mario Lopez have been spotted wining and dining at the award-winning restaurant and lounging on one of Nikki’s signature plush beds or in VIP cabanas. The rich and famous – or those who want to be around them – also love Tantra, which has a live-grass entryway, sexy silk walls, aphrodisiac food (the Tantra Love Apple is one such amorous appetizer) and great music. How-To Celebrity Miami Miami is more than a playground for the rich and elite. The truth is, South Beach has a variety of accommodation options. For every Beyonce wanna-be, there are at least 20 thrifty tourists. And they all have to stay somewhere. The low season, from June to October, is a great time to experience the city like the celebrities in Miami do. Four- or five-star hotels generally have rates ranging from $250 to $450 a night. You can also find more economical rooms nearby; you just have to do your homework. You’ll also want to look the part, and you’re in luck because “Miami Style” is easy to achieve. Daywear is a casual affair. Put on a hot swimsuit, flip-flops, a hat and sunscreen and you’re good to go. In the evening, a nice pair of jeans with a chic top will do. Women on the beach love their high-heeled sandals, so ladies, keep that in mind. Flip-flops for men or women at night are a big no-no. After dark, many nightclubs have a line and a cover charge (no more than $20). If you plan to really live it up, ask the concierge at your hotel to reserve you a table at a club and the cover charge may disappear. If you’re lucky, your table might be next to celebs like Paris Hilton or Will Smith who love our steamy nightlife. No matter what your plans, there are deals to be had. Even in glamorous Miami, you don’t need a celebrity name to open doors to high-end places. Glamour lives on at the glorious Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Millionaire’s Row.- Greater Miami CVB The pool at the Delano South Beach, the grand dame of celebrity Miami Beach hotels. - An Art Safari, from Tallahassee to Miami
From the ancients to the moderns, from Tallahassee to Miami, here are some must-do Florida art excursions. For those inclined to the quietly intense appreciation of art, the galleries and chambers of Florida's art museums provide sanctum. Indeed, great art flourishes in the Sunshine State. From the inestimable works of the masters, to the thrilling work of new artists, the art in Florida's museums is as variedly beautiful as the state's natural riches. When you decide to go on a Florida art safari, outfit yourself with your gallery gear (comfortable shoes, an attentive spirit and a sense of wonder) and head to one of the great Florida art museums Feel Free to Dalí The largest collection of the famed surrealist painter outside of Spain has found a permanent home at the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, which was relocated to a brand new building in January 2011. The building features a distinctive geodesic glass bubble in an architectural homage to the Dali museum in Spain. Ninety-six of the artist's oils, spanning all four of his aesthetic periods, enable the collection at the museum to give visitors a whole picture of this much-admired artist. More than 100 watercolors and 1,400 graphics, photographs, sculptures and objects d'art augment the oil collection. From Dalí's early period through his transition to the surrealism he introduced to the world, this dedicated museum is truly extraordinary. Thousands of visitors go to St. Petersburg specifically to pay homage to this eccentric artist and to explore in depth his amazing vision of the world. And with so many of his great works to appreciate, take your time and dally a little. The eye-catching museum also includes a waterside garden, theater, café, classroom and library. The Exquisite Moderns From the first seeds planted in late 19th century Europe by Impressionists such as Monet, Gauguin, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and Cézanne to Modernism's fullest flowering in Jackson Pollock, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach cultivates a collection of more than 7,000 pieces covering American, European, Photography, Chinese and Contemporary art. Along with exquisite examples of African, pre-Colombian American, Asian and contemporary art, the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art on the campus of University of Florida in Gainesville boasts a collection of modern artists including the French impressionist Claude Monet and Americans William Morris Hunt and Herman Herzog. The Wolfsonian - Florida International University in Miami Beach is an art and design museum that presents a view of modern art with a great emphasis on design, architecture, graphic posters and other less traditionally championed forms of art. The collections have included the British Arts and Crafts movement, Dutch Art Nouveau, American Industrial Design, a vast array of travel-related graphics and posters and samples of 20th century political propaganda. The museum also hosts themed traveling exhibits, pulling together many disparate threads of the world's art and design. With modern works by Campigli, Degas, Glackens, Picasso, Klee, Matisse, Prendergast, Redon, Rouault and Severini, the Boca Raton Museum of Art offers a broad view of modernism. Substantial contemporary and 19th-century European works help frame the modern pieces. The Old Masters: How Well They Understood Circus magnate John Ringling of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus created the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in 1929 to hold his ever-growing collection of European masters. He bequeathed it to the people of the State of Florida when he died in 1936, leaving a grand array of some of Europe's most-celebrated artists, including Rubens, Hals, Veronese, Poussin, Velázquez, El Greco and Ribera. The museum also houses the large mythological painting of the Judgment of Paris by Ludovico David and Cephalus Grieving Over the Dying Procris by Abraham Janssens. The museum continues to add more of the great masters to its collection and to host great contemporary and modern traveling exhibits. The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville boasts more than 1,100 European paintings, sculptures, works on paper and decorative arts from the 12th to 20th centuries. Paintings from the Old Master include works by Gaddi, Aertsen, Vasari, Assereto, Rubens, Snyders, Steen and Lorrain. Worlds of Art The Orlando Museum of Art has a focus on 18th, 19th and 20 th -century American art - paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures and other works by artists such as Ansel Adams, Thomas Moran, Dale Chihuly, Dennis Oppenheim, Georgia O'Keeffe, John Singer Sargent, Bryan Hunt, Robert Rauschenberg, Childe Hassam, Morris Louis, John Chamberlain and George Inness. Beyond this, the museum's collection includes pre-Colombian and African work. Such diverse cultures as the Colima, Aztec and Zapotec of Mexico; the Zulu, Xhosa, Thembu and Ndebele of southern Africa; the Anasazi and Mogollon of the Southwestern United States; the Yoruba, Baule and Dogon of western Africa; and the Inca, Monche and Nazca of Peru are represented. The Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala has a collection that well represents art from many times and places. From ancient Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman and Persian objects, to Pre-Columbian, African and Asian arts, a perusal of this collection is sure to broaden your horizons. Greek Orthodox icons and medieval manuscripts round out the museum's diverse holdings. The collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg – the only comprehensive art collection, extending from antiquity to the present day on the west coast of Florida – features important works by Monet, Cezanne, Gauguin, Ronin, O’Keeffe, and Andrew Wyeth. It is one of the few Florida museums with so many paintings by Monet and O’Keeffe, and the photography collection of approximately 12,000 images is one of the largest and most significant in the Southeast. Opening the Hazel Hough Wing in 2008, more than doubled the size of the original building and provided more space for the collection and special exhibitions. The Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland has several areas of focus: photography, modern and contemporary art, Asian art, European and American decorative arts and Pre-Columbian art. Highlights include ceramics, textiles, stone and precious metals dating from c.1,000 BC to c.AD 1500 originating in Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru. The rest of the museum is dedicated to rotating exhibitions of a variety of genres and artistic media. Art Continues With a special focus on contemporary paintings, sculpture and photography from contemporary artists, the Tampa Museum of Art is a resource for visitors interested in the continuing role art plays in our culture, and the museum's collection of classical antiquities documents where we started. The Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale boasts an ever-growing rotation of modern and contemporary American, European and Cuban work, including Picasso ceramics, such pop artists as Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Larry Rivers, William Glackens, CoBrA art and Robert Rauschenberg and Cuban artists Carlos Garaicoa, Raul Corrales and the late Pedro Alvarez. Also notable is “Foto Fort Lauderdale” – a permanent gallery dedicated to photographic art that gives photography a year-round home at the museum. Galleries The LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts, in Tallahassee, presents eight to 12 scheduled exhibitions and three major events (a Holiday Show, Chain of Parks spring festival, and Art and Soul fall art auction) every year with something for everyone. Its mission is to promote and advance education, interest and participation in the contemporary visual arts. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Florida's art museums

- The Best Places to Experience Electric Surfboarding in Miami: A Thrill You Don't Want to Miss
Thanks to the advanced technology of electric surfboards, you can now surf in Miami even without waves and previous surfing experience. Miami Living brings you this "Electric Surfboards Guide" to help you understand the basics of e-surfing and where you can experience it here in Miami. What is an electric surfboard? Electric surfboards are specially designed boards that allow you to ride and glide on any type of water regardless of wave conditions. How do they work? The boards are equipped with an electric jet propulsion system powered by lithium-ion batteries. The board is controlled by a wireless handheld remote control. History of electric surfboard A motorised surfboard was first developed in Australia in 1935 to help lifeguards rescue swimmers at Bondi Beach in Sydney. It was called the "Surf Scooter" and is considered the very first electric surfboard ever developed. In 1960, American surf and sail entrepreneur Hobart "Hobie" Alter developed a surfboard with an outboard motor. With advances in materials and battery technology, the e-surfing industry has come a long way with a variety of designs and boards, but the concept remains the same. How to ride an electric surfboard? Riding an electric surfboard is as simple as riding a jet ski and is considered much easier than traditional surfing. It can be used on flat water surfaces such as lakes, canals, bays, the open sea and even larger waves. How fast can I go? A battery-powered surfboard can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour and last about 45 minutes, depending on the riding speed. Keep in mind that riding speed varies depending on the board model and motor type. Average battery charging time also varies, but generally surfboards can be fully charged in 60 to 120 minutes. WHERE CAN I E-SURF IN MIAMI? Miami Beach Paddleboard offers easy to use electric boards. Surf without waves in one of their full carbon boards which can reach speeds up 26 mph. - Protect Your Brand: Why Trademarking Your Business Name Matters
A unique name and brand are the cornerstone for any successful business. That’s why it’s so important to protect that identity from others who might try to gain a competitive edge through infringement. A registered trademark provides a formidable wall of defense, not just for your business name, but for logos and other imagery that establish you firmly in the eyes of your customers. While a trademark isn’t required for your business name, let’s take a look at why it makes so much sense from a legal and practical perspective. What is a trademark? A registered U.S. trademark is intended to protect not only your business name, but also a word, phrase, slogan, design, symbol, or any combination that establishes your identity. It gives you the exclusive right to use your business name nationwide in connection with your goods and services. It protects you from trademark infringement, whether it’s inadvertent or intentional, and allows you to legally enforce your rights. At the federal level, trademark applications are reviewed and granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In Florida, it is possible to register a trademark at either the state level or the federal level. However, it’s strongly advised to apply for your trademark through the USPTO. That makes it enforceable not only in Florida, but nationwide. This also gives you possible legal recourse at the federal level in case of infringement and any potential damages. This video explains it in better detail. Limited protection vs. full protection Even without a registered trademark, your business name enjoys a limited amount of protection from infringement under common law. You can place a TM after your business name to signify that you’re claiming the right to use your brand, even if you haven’t applied for a registered trademark. However, common law rights can be difficult to enforce in court, and are typically protected only in the geographic region where your business is located. A registered trademark allows you to use the ® symbol and enjoy full protection under the law. Enforcing your business name trademark When your business name is registered as a trademark, it becomes part of the USPTO’s publicly searchable database. The Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) is an excellent resource, and should be monitored constantly as part of an effective strategy for protecting your trademark. If a company seeks to register a business name or other trademarks, a search of the database will quickly show them if it is potentially infringing on your registered trademark. Likewise, if you’re seeking to trademark your name, you’ll ensure that it’s not in conflict with any existing trademarks. However, it’s important to know that the USPTO is not responsible for enforcement. Any request for remedy – up to and including legal action – needs to be initiated by you, or through legal counsel with experience in protecting intellectual property. More than words Your business name is important, and it typically ties closely to your company logo. Consider also applying for a registered trademark for your logo, since it can be equally as important as the name when it comes to your corporate image. Looking for proof? Think about: McDonald’s Golden Arches. The Nike Swoosh. The Starbucks Mermaid Those are just a handful of the logos that are instantly recognizable by consumers, even without the company name. And, of course, both the name and logo trademarks are all zealously enforced by the companies that own them. Trademarking outside your industry It’s important to note that trademark protection typically does not extend outside your industry. In most cases, it can be used by companies whose goods or services are not in direct competition with your business. For example, the business name trademark for Apple Inc. would not be infringed by a regional chain of “Shiny Apple Dry Cleaners,” since they attract different types of customers. However, a trademark application for Golden Apple Technologies would likely be rejected by the USPTO. The key is whether a company’s name or image could be confused with another in a similar industry. Nevertheless, if your business name is not trademarked, it lacks the highest level of protection, making it potentially susceptible to infringement inside or outside your industry. One solution could be registering your business name for more than one industry, or “class.” For example, if your business sells both athletic apparel and sports equipment, you’ll get the best protection by trademarking your business name in each class. Trademarking around the world South Florida is a world-famous trade center, with easy access to many international markets. If your business has worldwide ambitions, it’s advisable to consider trademarking your name in countries where you might be doing business in the future – especially in an increasingly digital economy. Once you have a registered U.S. trademark, you can take advantage of the Madrid Protocol for international registration. It allows you or your legal representative to file a single application that covers more than 120 countries – over 80 percent of the world’s trade. Other things to consider Since the USPTO is a government agency, it is open to the public for trademark applications. However, it’s a lengthy process; just the initial assessment by a USPTO examining attorney can take up to six months after filing, usually followed by several more months of additional steps. The USPTO will require government-mandated filing fees, typically depending on whether your business name needs to be registered in multiple classes. The trademarking process is detail-oriented, with a number of associated fees and deadlines, plus potential stumbling blocks. Many companies choose an intellectual property attorney who understands the nuances and requirements, rather than trying to handle it internally. Looking at the long term Successful business owners understand the power and value of a brand from Day 1. But creating that identity is only the beginning: Long-term protection through an effective copyright strategy is a necessity as your business gains momentum and becomes successful. Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade is pleased to announce that philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has pledged a $4.8 million donation to support its mission of enabling all young people, especially those who need it the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. This transformational gift will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Capital Campaign to completely rebuild and renovate its Northwest Club into a state-of-the-art facility for generations to come. Scott is an American author and philanthropist. She is the founder and executive director of Bystander Revolution, an online resource offering practical, crowdsourced advice about simple things individuals can do to take the power out of bullying. In May 2019, she signed “The Giving Pledge,” and promised to give away at least half of her wealth over the course of her lifetime. Recognizing the needs of the community to which she can contribute, Scott made significant financial donations to multiple Boys & Girls Clubs around the country. Scott worked with a team of advisors to help accelerate her giving and took a data-driven approach to identifying organizations with strong leadership teams and results, with special attention to those operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital. Scott is committed to this research and deeper diligence not only to identify organizations with high potential for impact, but also to pave the way for unsolicited and unexpected gifts given with full trust and no strings attached. Scott’s entire commitment will be paid upfront and left unrestricted in order to provide Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade with maximum flexibility. “We are incredibly grateful and humbled by MacKenzie Scott’s generosity to select us for such a transformational gift to support great futures for our area youth,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “With her support, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade can completely rebuild and renovate our Northwest Club. The Club’s positive programs are very important to keeping our youth members engaged in a healthy, safe, productive, and enjoyable environment.” Located at 10915 NW 14 Avenue Miami, FL 33167, the Northwest Club opened its doors in 1953 and today it serves predominately African American children from lower income families. Boys & Girls of Miami-Dade’s plan, which is already planned, is to completely rebuild the 11-acre campus including demolition of the existing 1950s building to build a new 25,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility featuring a learning center, STEM and computer lab, teen center and recreational areas, and the complete refurbishment of its existing fields and gym. The total cost of the project is $13 million, and construction is expected to begin in 2023.
