  • What Kind of Damage Do Iguanas Do?

Homeowners tend to be concerned about iguanas on their property and the damage these animals might cause. And iguanas have certainly earned their reputation by digging burrows that may cause sidewalks and seawalls to collapse and damage foundations and roofs, among many other disasters. When it comes to the environment, iguanas can wreak havoc with it while eating great amounts of decorative plants, foliage, and vegetable gardens. If you are dealing with iguanas on your property, it’s best to call professional iguana removal services to come and help you find a solution to this problem since it seems as though the iguana population has exploded in recent years. What health risks do iguanas pose? Desperate homeowners who are intent on keeping their landscaping intact may lose patience whenever they catch iguanas feasting on their flowers, shrubbery, and other plants. They may lift these creatures with their bare hands to relocate them to a different spot. When they do this, they run the risk of getting salmonella which is carried by iguanas and can be transferred to humans by any contact or their droppings. This illness brings fever, debilitating diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. Should you come in contact with one or their fecal matter, wash and sanitize your hands thoroughly. What other damage do iguanas cause? Injuries to People When iguanas decide to catch some sun on patios, decks, seawalls, or sidewalks, they may get in the way of pedestrians passing by. When iguanas feel threatened, they may lash out by biting, scratching, or causing injuries with their sharp and powerful tails. Damage to Property If iguanas decide to burrow along seawalls or underneath sidewalks, they may cause these structures to collapse. They may also burrow under foundations, causing great damage to the stability of the home. In some cases, when iguanas can climb tall trees that may have branches that reach a property’s roof, they may also burrow inside the roof, causing thousands of dollars of damage to the home. Damage to Canals Iguanas can dig tunnels into the sides of canals. These waterways control water runoff that can prevent flooding during major weather events, such as thunderstorms and hurricanes. If iguanas cause the erosion of these waterways and runoff channels, they will also affect all adjacent property, causing thousands of dollars in damage to surrounding homes and their infrastructure. Is there anything a homeowner can do to prevent an iguana infestation on their property? A good way to start is by making your property unattractive for iguanas. If you plant toxic plants such as milkweed around your property, iguanas will not get hurt because they are smart enough to know not to eat this, but they will stay away from your property and look for another place where they may more easily eat the vegetation they enjoy. Also, if you have fruit trees in your backyard, get in the habit of picking up any fruit that falls to the ground. Iguanas are attracted by the scent of rotting fruit such as mangos and will try to get into your yard. If you have tall trees with wide branches, keep them trimmed. When tree branches touch other plants, it is as though you have built a superhighway for them to move from section to section in your backyard. And if, as mentioned above, they touch your roof, you have given them access to a large area where they can comfortably burrow and have their babies. If all your attempts at controlling them fail, call a professional to help you with this bothersome issue. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Unsplash

  • “The Cyrus” Sneaker by Mallet London

Mallet London introduces their latest women’s sneaker ‘The Cyrus’ just in time for Mothers Day. This style, already a bestseller in the men’s version, launches this month exclusively at us.mallet.com in 5 striking new colorways: Black & Rose, Lilac, Mauve, Powder Blue and Taupe. “I’m excited to introduce this new style for Spring,” says Tommy Mallet, the Founder and Creative Director of the brand. The name ‘Cyrus’ derives from Cirrus and has a double meaning but alternate spelling. Cirrus means “clouds forming”, and the appearance and shape of the Cyrus is the reason for the name, not to mention the pillow-like comfort resembling a cloud. “They are sleek, comfortable, unique, versatile and can be worn during the day or at night,” says Mallet. In keeping with the theme of all shoes being named after streets in Islington, where the brand founder hails from, Cyrus Street is also a few steps away from the brand’s new London Headquarters. “To go forward I have to go back,” says Mallet referring to the design process. “You have to put yourself in your own shoes”. “I started Mallet because the 15-year-old me could not afford to buy the designer sneakers I wanted. I had to work to be able to buy the sneakers I wanted. Mallet started from passion. I wanted to create my own community, where anyone can wear my shoes. It’s not about where you come from, it’s about what you love”. Mallet London offers quality sneakers at an achievable price point. “I am creating luxury that is accessible to people who appreciate luxury design,” says Mallet. The brand, known for its bold yet minimalistic silhouettes with sleek soles, launches new styles each season but also maintains a core collection. Signature details synonymous with the brand include the statement metal heel clip and the trademark “M” monogram. Each silhouette is thoughtfully designed in London and made with high-quality leather and mesh. The Cyrus is available exclusively at www.us.mallet.com and is priced from $295. In celebration of its first anniversary, Dogfish Head Miami has teamed up with entrepreneur, philanthropist and NBA Hall of Famer Chris Bosh to release a limited-edition brew, “Bosh Blonde” on Sunday, May 22. The special beer, dreamed into existence by long-time friends Chris Bosh and Dogfish Head Founder and Brewer Sam Calagione, will be released at noon to kick start the anniversary festivities. Dogfish Head Miami made a grand entrance into Wynwood one year ago, bringing the national brand’s off-centered, innovative and creative culture to the similarly artistic city of Miami. Since its opening, the brewery has provided locals and visitors alike a place to enjoy innovative beers, local food, music and art through activations and impressive beer collaborations, and Dogfish Head Miami’s One Year Anniversary Celebration will be no different. Bosh and Calagione share a love for the brewing process and wanted to come together to create a one-of-a-kind beer that speaks to Miami locals through infused flavors. Brewed with Florida-grown oranges and fresh squeezed sugar cane juice, the “Bosh Blonde” ale exudes the essence of South Florida leisure: easy drinking with a citrus twist meant to be shared with family and friends. The can itself is designed to reflect the coming together of Chris Bosh and Dogfish Head Miami with vibrant colors and artistic sketches that nod to music, beer and basketball of course. “We are thrilled to commemorate our one year anniversary with this special collaboration,” said Calagione. “Chris Bosh is not only a good friend and fellow beer lover, but he is committed to giving back to the Miami community through various organizations. This refreshing brew will not only benefit a local non-profit, but is sure to please the palate with its crisp, citrusy flavor.” Open to the public, guests can join the celebration to taste the new “Bosh Blonde”, indulge in a special menu of tasty ‘Bosh Bites’ based on Chris Bosh’s favorite foods as well as live music throughout the day, and more. Limited-edition hats will also be available for sale at the event, and the first 20 people in line to buy the beer will get a free hat. Meet and greets with Chris Bosh will be exclusively available for a limited number of Dogfish Head Miami’s Off-Centered Society members. Guests who want to join the meet and greet but aren’t an Off-Centered Society member, can sign up in person at Dogfish Head Miami and then send an email to ocshelp@dogfish.com to receive a secret event link to register for one of the limited meet and greet spots. The “Bosh Blonde'' will be available exclusively at Dogfish Head Miami both on draft and in 4pk/16oz cans for $16 each starting at noon on Sunday, May 22. A portion of proceeds from sales of “Bosh Blonde” will be donated to Refresh Miami, a local non-profit organization with a mission to educate, inspire, connect and grow the Miami tech and startup community. To pair with the refreshing, citrusy blonde ale, Chris Bosh and Dogfish Head Miami have also curated a Bosh Bites Menu, featuring barbeque dishes with a “Bosh Blonde” twist, incorporating the actual beer into each dish seamlessly. Guests can indulge in menu items including the Bosh Blonde BBQ Pork Slider topped with a vinegar-based slaw, BBQ sauce made with Bosh Blonde and sweet pickles packed into a toasted brioche bun; the Burger Slider topped with bacon jam, spicy pimento cheese, potato stix, shredded lettuce and shaved onions and the Baked Mac & Cheese Empanada, a warm and crispy empanada, stuffed with mac and cheese made with a Bosh Blonde cheese sauce. • Exercises & Mental Health by Roger Franco

Regular physical activity has been scientifically proven to improve physical health by preventing metabolic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia and heart attacks. In addition, the benefits of physical activity go beyond disease prevention. Regular physical activity significantly improves mental health by reducing anxiety, stress, and depression. Yet despite the physiological and psychological benefits of regular physical activity, most people do not exercise. Anxiety and depression are widespread problems in today’s society. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 280 million people worldwide suffer from depression and one in thirteen suffer from anxiety. Studies show that regular physical activity can be as effective as taking medication in treating anxiety and depression. When combined with healthy eating habits, exercise can not only prevent metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease, but also prevent or reduce stress, anxiety and depression. In addition, regular exercise can also improve mood, regulate sleep patterns, increase energy levels and boost self-esteem. Exercise improves mental health by increasing blood circulation and thus oxygenation of brain tissue, and by increasing levels of serotonin, dopamine and endorphin, the hormones responsible for happiness and joy. In addition, exercise regulates the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, which are associated with the fight-or-flight response. When these hormones are too high, they cause stress and anxiety and affect sleep, among other health problems. Many exercises, such as lifting weights, running, cycling, swimming, boxing or dancing, can benefit physical and mental health. A regular morning jog on the beach can improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and bring many other psychological benefits. However, if you are starting to exercise again after a break or are unsure how to begin your fitness journey, seeking professional help is a great option. An experienced personal trainer can guide you safely and effectively, and help you get the most out of your workout. Most gyms offer a wide range of equipment and workout modalities that can be used for an effective workout. In addition to strength training, group fitness classes such as cycling, dancing or any type of aerobics can improve mood and relieve stress. For those who do not like to spend time in a gym, exercising outdoors and with your own body weight is also an excellent option. Although exercise is considered something we do for our bodies, it is also an activity we do for our brains. Give yourself a chance to feel the benefits of exercise. If you have had a stressful day at work, go for a walk on the beach or in the park and watch the sunset. I guarantee you will feel much better!
