- A Summer Favorite: Creamy Cucumber Salad
A summer staple, this creamy cucumber salad boasts a crunchy texture and tangy, rich flavor. Because of cucumber’s high water content, cucumber salads often consist of soggy cucumber slices swimming in a watery, diluted dressing. This creamy cucumber salad is the antidote to that. Flavored with sweet red onions and a thick dressing made from sour cream, mayonnaise and fresh dill, the salad has a crunchy texture and tangy, rich flavor. The trick is salting the sliced cucumbers and red onions in a colander for 30 minutes before tossing them with the dressing. This not only drains the liquid from the cucumbers, maintaining their crunch, but also partially pickles the onions, taming their raw bite and sharp flavor. This summertime staple pairs perfectly with grilled chicken or grilled salmon, and is a welcome addition at any picnic, barbecue, or potluck. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CREAMY CUCUMBER SALAD STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Cut the cucumbers in half and then slice each half down the middle lengthwise. Use the tip of a teaspoon to scoop out the center seeds. Cut each half into thin slices. Place the sliced cucumbers in a colander along with the red onion slices and salt. Toss and let sit in the sink for at least 30 minutes, until the water drains out. Meanwhile, make the dressing: In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, white wine vinegar, dill, sugar, and black pepper. Mix well. When the cucumbers and onions are ready, release any excess water by tapping the colander several times on the base of the sink, then use a large wad of paper towels or clean dish towel to pat the vegetables dry. Add the vegetables to the dressing and toss well. Cover and chill until ready to serve. This past fall, PAOW! partnered with University of Florida’s Gator Dining Services to give students the opportunity to be part of what Future Foods called a “plant-based taste revolution.” PAOW! surveyed the students, ultimately giving them a chance to select which products made the cut for the brand’s consumer launch. Based on the student surveys, bold and global was the clear direction. PAOW!’s products will be offered in 8 oz. bags, shipped in premium packaging. - Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Names Cristiane Melo its 2022 Youth of the Year
Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade is pleased to announce it has named Cristiane Melo, (18), its 2022 Youth of the Year. A panel of Club staff and administration served as the judges to select this year’s Youth of the Year. Melo was born in Angola, Africa. After losing her mother to Lupus at the age of seven, she moved to the United States with her aunt and sister in 2013. In 2016, she moved back to Angola and then shortly thereafter moved to Portugal to be closer to her grandmother. In 2018, Melo and her sister returned to Miami. The frequent moves between countries and schools significantly impacted Melo’s grades. Melo made a promise to her grandmother that she’d become a model daughter, one that would have made her mother proud if she were alive. Melo, a senior at Coral Gables Senior High School with a 3.6 GPA, has been a member of the Hank Kline Club since 2019. Since joining Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, she has become an active member in school and Club activities, holding leadership positions such as Company Commander of her JROTC unit and Vice President of HIP, Keystone and Teen Programs. Melo will be graduating in June 2022, making the Superior Honor Roll. She plans to attend Miami Dade College and study marketing. During her time at the Club, she has matured by placing her focus on her education and giving back to the community, recognizing the Club’s impact on her success. “Cristiane has proven to be the model ambassador for Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade and has earned the title of 2022 Youth of the Year,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “She embodies the Club’s values including leadership and service and has overcome adversity to achieve academic success. All of us at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade congratulate her for all of her hard work and commitment to the Club and our community.” Melo and 29 other teens from Florida Boys & Girls Clubs will be competing for the 2022 Florida Youth of the Year title. The winner of the state title will receive a $2,500 scholarship, laptop computer and printer. Every year since 1955, youth from various Boys & Girls Clubs across Florida have competed for the opportunity to represent Florida as the Florida Youth of the Year. The winner of the state title then competes in the regional competition. Five regional winners then move on, and one is named the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year serves as both an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Clubs youth and as a strong voice for all of the nation’s young people. He/she receives a new car courtesy of Toyota, as well as scholarships and cash totaling $60,000. The National Youth of the Year, along with the other four regional runners-up, then travel to Washington, D.C. and speak to members of Congress and meet the president of the United States. To achieve the title of Youth of the Year on any level, Club members must embody the values of leadership and service, academic excellence and a healthy lifestyle. They should exemplify the critical impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people. The scoring includes candidate essays, an interview, a speech, letters of recommendation and overall application quality. About Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade has been serving youth in the community since 1946. - Chaunte Wayans Talks Wayans Comedy Dynasty, Gay Marriage, Jay Z, Famous Funerals
In this candid conversation with entertainment journalist and podcaster, Allison Kugel for the newest episode of the Allison Interviews podcast, comedian Chaunté Wayans opens up about growing up with her uncles Keenen, Damon, Shawn and Marlon Wayans, and her Aunt Kim Wayans. Chaunté recounts how the Wayans family writes and develops their comedy as a team, and how she forged her own path through two decades of paying her dues in stand up as an LGBTQ comedian. Wayans is currently on Marlon Wayans Presents: The Headliners on HBO Max as the sole LGBTQ performer. This comes on the heels of her critically acclaimed performance on Netflix Is A Joke’s Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready produced by Wanda Sykes. In this intimate and revealing interview, Chaunté talks the Wayans family comedy dynasty, gay marriage, Jay Z, famous funerals, and more. On wanting a refund if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns gay marriage: “I’m getting married. I proposed to my girlfriend, and as we are doing all this stuff and I’m paying for the wedding, now they might take away gay rights. They are already trying to take away abortion. They announced it. But as crazy as that sounds, as mad as I should be, I take something like that and say, ‘Damn! I could save $10,000-$15,000 if they just cut this bill now.’ (laugh) As much as I want to get married and I love my fiancée, that’s my creative process for comedy, where I say, ‘This is messed up, but I’m also getting married in August and gay marriage has been legal for how many years? I should have done this sooner, but I spent money on a ring. I have ten credit cards out on a ring, and now I have to pay for a wedding for Biden to possibly take all of this away. I’m going to assemble a stimulus package for my marriage.’” On never wanting to meet Jay Z: “I was a big fan and I still am a big fan of Jay Z. I had the opportunity to meet Jay Z and Beyonce when they first got together, through my Uncle Damon [Wayans]. However, from past interactions I’ve had, I said, ‘I don’t want to meet him, because if he’s an A-hole then…’ You know what I mean? I want to see him like I can never touch him.” On dealing with paparazzi and autograph seekers at a Wayans family funeral: “One of my great aunts passed away. My Uncle Marlon [Wayans] and I just finished this show and we get off the plane and we get to the funeral, and there are two dudes standing outside in their shorts holding pictures and things for [my family] to sign. We have no idea who these people are, but they are here getting autographs at our great aunt’s funeral. We go into the funeral, and you would think seeing all these older church lady types that they would know nothing about technology. Towards the end of the funeral, every old person in there pulls out their phone to do snapchats and selfies with my family. Mind you, they were so involved with taking pictures of my family that they left my dead great aunt in the funeral home, while we are all crying. These are the things that happen. That is why you have to start to pay attention to certain things (laughing), because that is how you find comedy.” On the Wayans formula for writing jokes: “When I started doing comedy, I went to Shawn (Wayans) first. I was on tour with Shawn and he sat me down to show me how to develop a joke, and we watched certain specials together. Or at 3am I would call one of them and say, ‘I did this joke and I don’t know how it worked.’ There was a structure to writing jokes, and they were all very supportive and always answered the phone. The structure comes from them saying, ‘keep going.’ If my family thinks something is funny, you will hear ten minutes of them trying to give you jokes off of what you just said, to the point where you’re like, ‘Hey man, hold on and let me go get a recorder (laugh) or let me right some of this down.’ The Wayans formula is, once you get a joke in, they can’t stop going with it. That’s the real formula.” The Wayans annual family tradition: “Probably playing baseball for the Fourth of July, but everybody is old now (laugh). That is the one thing that we try to do is get together and see the grandkids. We get together and play baseball or dodgeball, but we can’t all move the same as we used to.” On the best advice she’s ever received: “The best advice I ever received was ‘Believe in yourself, trust yourself. Everybody is dealing with some type of insecurity, some type of fear. Just know that you are not alone.’ I’ve gotten that advice from my uncle Damon [Wayans] and my Uncle Keenen [Wayans]. ‘Don’t be afraid, because we are all afraid in some type of way.’” On hoping to write and direct a project for her famous family before they retire: “Funny thing is, I’m working on something right now where I would love my aunt Kim [Wayans] to be my actual aunt on the show. There are a few things I’m always keeping them in mind for. I also feel like they have all done so much that sometimes I think, ‘I hope I get them while they are still in this business.’” About Journalist and Podcast Host Allison Kugel Allison Kugel is a veteran entertainment journalist with more than three hundred long form celebrity and newsmaker interviews published and syndicated, worldwide. - Miami Motocross Park – Get Down in the Dirt
On the western stretches of Miami lies Krome Avenue, one of the last remaining vestiges of South Florida’s nostalgic road trips through the Everglades. Krome traces long straight lanes from the northern limits of Miami-Dade County to the farmlands of the Redland and eventually deposits you at the gateway to the Keys. As trucks and motorcycles grind down this country road with “Route 66” appeal, a few trailers with dirt bikes take a quick turn off the beaten path to a non-descript gate just beyond Mack’s Fish Camp. You’ve just entered Miami Motocross Park, an old mining pit that has been converted into a world-class motorbike circuit with hard-packed hills and turns that can challenge anyone to conquer its courses. The first thing you notice is the sound of revving engines suddenly kicking into gear and sputtering off into the distance. Trailers and tents of various sizes harbor dirt bikes as they’re prepped and cleaned for their next turn. This is a family affair; kids and spouses huddle around their encampments as the riders clean and test engines while slapping on the proper safety gear. There are plenty of tough-looking men milling around their mounts, but you soon find that girls and boys are a full part of these activities; the passion for speed often is passed down through generations. The track is open to all classes of riders, from beginner to expert, and includes sessions for a younger set who can barely put their feet on the ground. But they have no fear as they putter onto the beginner course. A pair of teenage sisters don their helmets readying themselves for hard turns and big jumps, encouraged in the tradition started by their doting father. Miami Motocross Park is one of the few tracks located near Miami’s metropolitan paradise. Traditionally, dirt tracks of this size are located in the far reaches of Florida’s remote interiors. This location allows even the incidental tourist to take a break from a sunny beach vacation to test their skills on the challenging hills and turns. Visitors from Europe and Latin America visit frequently. The concession provides bikes and gear for rent, without a major investment of time or money. The owner of the track, Lazaro Borrego, is constantly grooming the lanes of traffic on his bulldozer, wetting down the soil in order to create a hard-pack surface that is unlike any track you may find in other locales. This track is available to all and Lazaro encourages even the youngest novices to enjoy this sport. Miami Motocross park is open on Wednesdays and Weekends, rain or shine and the atmosphere is a welcoming one. Strangers soon become friends who share a passion for that next thrill ride. Gucci presents a new campaign featuring Oscar-winning actress and film producer Jessica Chastain for its High Jewelry collection. The series of endorsed and still-life images and the dedicated film, imbued with a poetic and timeless aesthetic, evoke the narrative behind the extraordinary new pieces of Hortus Deliciarum. Informed by the far-flung travels taken by artists, scholars, and thinkers searching for knowledge and beauty over two centuries ago, Gucci deciphers places full of wonders for a new age. A creative ode by Alessandro Michele to specific historical and architectural eras suspended in time and space. The journey, inspired by the Grand Tour, reveals romantic, maximalist jewels made with mastery. In the campaign, Chastain inhabits an elegant and eccentric character. An eclectic collector of fashion, art, and experiences, the Hortus Deliciarum jewelry she wears represents the mementos her character has accumulated throughout her life travels. Vivid and cinematic, the film reveals a succession of different scenes, with the decoration of each room representing another phase in the rich personal history of Chastain's character.
