  • Exploring the Natural Wonders of Costa Rica: Dominical & Uvita

The beach towns of Dominical and Uvita are located in the southern Pacific region of the country and have become a popular destination for those in search of pristine nature, tranquility and largely deserted terrains. A smooth 3.5 hour drive from the San Jose airport, this 12 mile stretch of dramatic coastline and nearly virgin beaches is lined by lush, verdant mountainsides and intersected by an abundance of pristine rivers and waterfalls. This jungle-filled mountainous area is a playground for wildlife and hiking enthusiasts alike and the nearly deserted beaches are the perfect escape for those looking to relax and unwind. An impressive first world highway adjoins these towns and, besides the highway, there are truly very few signs of human development activity from anywhere on the road or the beaches; only a local “tico” or an informed tourist would know that luxurious lodging gems - many with jaw-dropping views of the coastline below - are hidden within the dense jungle side. DOMINICAL AND UVITA Southeast Pacific Region Driving time from San José: 3 hr 7 min, 127 miles (205 km) Go hiking to the Nauyaca Waterfalls, a two-tiered waterfall with a 200 foot combined drop and a deep natural pool for swimming. Traverse the 4.3 miles of trails at Hacienda Barú, a hotel and wildlife refuge with an extraordinary diversity of habitats, flora and fauna, including over 330 species of birds identified on-sight. Rent a kayak to go on a mangrove river tour or a snorkeling-included ocean trip around the famous Whale’s Tail in Marino Ballena National Park, reaching some of the area’s most secluded beaches. If visiting within the months of August - November, sign up for a whale watching tour when hundreds of humpback whales migrate to the region’s warm waters every year to breed and rear their young. Visit Diamante Waterfall and Cave, a moderate to difficult day hike that will reward you with a twin waterfall at journey’s end and a secret cave as its backdrop (and for the more adventurous, you can stay overnight in the cave, complete with elevated platforms, a bathroom and a kitchen). • Watch How Cigars Are Rolled in Miami's Little Havana

If you got to the monument, you’ve arrived at the place where Miami’s Cuban Exile experience began. No one even calls it Eighth Street anymore. It’s simply, and symbolically, referred to as Calle Ocho, the spot where the first Cuban refugees clustered when they first arrived, and settled, and expanded. It used to be part of a neighborhood called Riverside, where the refugees found cheap places to rent. They opened businesses and, yes, the rest is Miami history. Calle Ocho Southwest Eighth Street from 17th Avenue east to 4th Street The Cuban influence has made way for other incoming exiles, but the Cubania is still the strongest element of the street at the heart of Little Havana. You can find Cuban-themed products from cigars to fine art, sip a cafecito at an open-front cafeteria window, stock up on T-shirts and tchotchkes, and pose for a selfie with one of the giant gallos — boldly painted rooster statues — adorning the street. And don’t leave without stopping by Domino Park at the corner of 16th Avenue to see the folks playing fast and furiously fun rounds of Cuba’s favorite pastime. Trust me, those raised voices and thundering smacks! of the domino tiles are all part of the merriment — usually. By Carlos Harrison. Image courtesy of Miami's Little Havana. • Award-Winning Hotel Brand Expands US Footprint with the Opening of their First Property in Miami

The pioneer of affordable luxury hotels – announces today the opening of its first property in Miami, citizenM Miami Brickell. Since its founding in 2008, citizenM has transformed the rules of traditional hospitality by introducing the concept of “affordable luxury for the people.” To mark the brand’s arrival in Miami, citizenM partnered with Miami born-and-raised artist Jen Stark to create five bright and vibrant large scale pieces of artwork that unite to create one composition for the Brickell property facade. Located in the heart of the city’s bustling downtown at 11 SE 10th Street, the 252-room hotel with this conversation-sparking art installation bridges citizenM’s playful personality with Brickell’s cosmopolitan atmosphere. Inside, eight societyM meeting rooms offer style, tech, and unlimited coffee to let ideas flow. The hotel will also feature the brand’s first rooftop pool, offering sweeping views of Miami’s downtown for in-house guests. “We’re thrilled to be opening the first of two citizenM hotels planned in Miami this year,” says Robin Chadha, Chief Marketing Officer. “With Jen Stark’s striking facade artwork and the interior curated with a selection of works from artists celebrating Miami’s diverse and vivacious spirit, we are excited to be able to provide guests with an unparalleled and culturally robust experience, making this property a landmark in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood.” As with all of its hotels, citizenM continues to bring art to the community through both commissioned and existing works. Commissioned artists Theresa Chromati and Lakwena Maciver created inspiring pieces for the citizenM Miami Brickell location. Chromati’s “Variations of Her Movements - Exploding and Exploring” shows an optimistic and hopeful journey — where she explores the act of unraveling your life, building yourself back up and moving forward to live in your full power. In the hotel’s entrance, Maciver’s kaleidoscopic colors, bold patterns and powerful message with “Good Life” provokes a deeper conversation. She explores how society showers certain people with money and glory and what this reflects about our values and beliefs. Thousands of citizenM guests will come face-to-face with these artists' thought-provoking art. Additionally, to give the property an art collection that felt distinct to Miami, citizenM hosted an “Open Art Call” where over 70 artists submitted works inspired by their love of the city. The panel of judges consisted of Rattan Chadha, founder of citizenM and contemporary art collector; Jen Stark, artist and creator of the hotel’s facade artwork; Rob Wagemans, Creative Director at citizenM and founder of Concrete; Lakwena Maciver, artist and creator of the hotel’s interior artwork; and FriendsWithYou, the art collaboration of Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III. Together, the judges selected ten winners to permanently showcase their pieces across the guest rooms of the new citizenM Miami Brickell and citizenM Miami World Center (opening late 2022). The ten chosen artists, many of whom are self-taught, created dynamic, colorful pieces adding a creative flair to the rooms. citizenM Miami Brickell’s entrance leads into a non-traditional lobby styled living room that feels like home, furnished with plenty of books, art and furniture from citizenM’s long-standing partner, Vitra. In the heart of the living room is a canteenM, serving food and drinks 24/7. The property also boasts two terraces: one overlooking the bustling S. Miami Avenue and the other facing a lush green garden space. The citizenM guest rooms are uniform in style and size - optimized for relaxation with a wall-to-wall window, an enormous XL king-size bed topped with the finest European linens, a jetlag-bursting power shower, and an HD TV with streaming capabilities. Superfast free Wi-Fi is unlimited and perfect for streaming one’s own films or music straight to the TV. A MoodPad tablet controls the ambience – from temperature to blinds to entertainment. All of these features can also be controlled by a guest’s smartphone, thanks to the brand’s award-winning app. In March 2022, citizenM launched the world’s simplest hotel membership program: mycitizenM+. There are no points to collect, no bronze-silver-platinum levels to achieve, no stale club-lounge muffins, no silly welcome gift. Members simply sign up to enjoy ‘all the perks without the points’. Guest feedback showed that most travelers want simplicity, value and flexibility. With the mycitizenM+ membership, citizenM guarantees a room - with an extra 10% discount off the lowest public rate - even during busy periods, for all member reservations made at least 48 hours in advance. Additional perks include: free late check-out and a free upgrade to a premium view room (both are subject to availability), a ‘first in queue’ chat service, early access to discounts, and members-only events. Superfast free Wi-Fi is available at all hotels – plus, guests can use the free citizenM app to check in, create a room key and much more. The cost of the membership is recouped within two nights. Billing is monthly (not yearly) at a fixed low rate (only $12 / €10 / £9 a month), and sign-up is for one year. Every citizenM hotel is included, and there are no blackout dates. The new citizenM Miami Brickell presents travelers with an affordable luxury experience—offering guests eye-catching art, high-tech design and frictionless service in a central location. Building upon the brand’s commitment to the United States, this opening will complement the existing citizenM US portfolio in Boston, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC, bringing the total offering to 9 hotels across the country and 27 worldwide. citizenM’s second property in the city - citizenM Miami World Center - is due to open later this year. More on citizenM citizenM was launched in 2008 with a purpose – to disrupt the traditional, stale hotel industry. Rattan Chadha – the founder of the global fashion brand Mexx – was inspired by his employees to create a hotel for today’s frequent travelers, giving them everything they need and nothing they don’t. This means central locations in the world’s most exciting cities, but at an affordable price. Not just a place to sleep, but somewhere to work, relax and play – just like home. Somewhere with superfast free Wi-Fi, tech that makes life easy, and world-class art that isn’t ‘hotel art’. A room with an ultra-comfortable XL bed to crash in, and a powerful rain shower to wake-up in. Rattan Chadha called this ‘affordable luxury for the people’. The first citizenM opened at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in 2008. In July 2022, citizenM’s portfolio includes 27 hotels in 17 exciting cities: London, Glasgow, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, Zurich, Geneva, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington DC, Taipei and Kuala Lumpur. citizenM positioning citizenM places in an ‘upscale hotel’ category (based on measurable factors like the STR Global Chain Scale positioning matrix, which ranks hotels based on price vs review scores) – thanks to an unfailing dedication to design, art, technology and comfort. citizenM stands out among all other hotels by simply creating a category of its own – as an affordable luxury hotel. • Morton Street Partners & Meyers Manx Present Special Mid-Century Vehicle Design Exhibition

Morton Street Partners, the curatorial project merging the worlds of contemporary art and collectible cars in the heart of the West Village, has partnered with Meyers Manx to present Winter Surf, an immersive exhibition that explores the inventive spirit of mid-twentieth century vehicle design and its associations with freedom and adventure. The show sparks conversations about the impact of technology on our relationship with nature and showcases vehicles including Steve McQueen’s iconic Meyers Manx dune buggy from The Thomas Crown Affair, a French off-road prototype known as “the Shake” designed by Italian coachbuilders Bertone, a Citroën Méhari, and a 1960s Bultaco motorcycle converted into a snowmobile. The exhibition highlights the aesthetic appeal and cultural significance of the dune buggy as a symbol of rebellion and counterculture. Through this exhibition, Morton Street Partners continues its commitment to promoting the conservation of material culture and the scholarship that provides context for the automobile's place within the art world. Visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to learn about the rich history and evolution of the dune buggy, as well as the craftsmanship and design that goes into creating these unique vehicles. The exhibition also encourages visitors to consider the changing role of the automobile in contemporary culture, and to reflect on the ways in which the car continues to inspire and challenge our ideas about art and design. American men’s clothing brand and surf company Noah has provided the custom-shaped surfboards on display and for sale during the duration of the Winter Surf exhibition. “There are few vehicles that have had such a lasting impression on pop culture as the Meyers Manx, so we are incredibly excited to have such rich source material for this exhibition– examining it as both as an object of modern design and of cultural permanence. The irony of a dune buggy exhibition taking place in Manhattan during the coldest season of the year is not lost on us– the idea of surfing the sand dunes during a snowstorm was simply too intriguing to ignore.” – says Jake Auerbach, Founding Partner, Morton Street Partners The Meyers Manx was created in 1964 by Bruce Meyers as a go-anywhere dune buggy dedicated to adventure and fun. His groundbreaking creation became an American classic for both its whimsical design and its remarkable performance. Manxes did it all: In 1967, after breaking the speed and time records for driving the distance of Baja and winning the inaugural Mexican 1000 outright in the same year, the roadster was driven by everyone from Elvis to Steve McQueen. This quintessentially Californian icon became a pop culture cornerstone of the 1960s and 70s. “The Meyers Manx has always been a symbol of joy, simplicity and purity. It’s the solution to the complexity of life. Continuing the legacy of the Meyers Manx connects us with the optimism of the 1960’s California culture, an optimism we all can share.” — adds Phillip Sarofim, Chairman, Meyers Manx. The exhibition includes newly commissioned sculptural and installation works, as well as older work re-contextualized by the artist. JAMILAH SABUR: THE HARVESTERS Visit The Bass and enjoy Jamilah Sabur: The Harvesters, now on view! Artist Jamilah Sabur takes inspiration from Pieter Bruegel's 1565 painting titled The Harvesters, which features adults harvesting wheat under a bright summer sky. Sabur found herself reexamining the painting in the context of record-breaking heatwaves, and uses the theme of 'harvesting' as a term with double meaning, connecting with her ongoing interest in mining and mineral extraction. Jamilah Sabur: The Harvesters will be on view through April 30, 2023. Explore this newest exhibition at The Bass! Pictured: Jamilah Sabur, The efficiency of the turbine, 2022 The exhibition is part of the Knight Art Commissions Program funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Generous support is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. JORGE MÉNDEZ BLAKE, DISMANTLED LANDSCAPE, (JOSÉ JUAN TABLADA’S HAIKUS) For this site-specific commissioned artwork Dismantled Landscape (José Juan Tablada’s Haikus), Jorge Méndez Blake (b. 1974, Mexico) was inspired by Mexican poet José Juan Tablada, the first writer to introduce haikus to the Spanish language in Latin America. In the inaugural Macallan Art Prize-winning work, Méndez Blake examines the two books of haikus published by the writer: “Un día… (Poemas sintéticos)” [One Day… (Synthetic Poems)], 1919, and ”El jarro de flores (Disociaciones líricas)” [The Flower Jug (Lyrical Dissociations)], 1922. By deconstructing the 99 poems contained in those books, Méndez Blake creates a visual composition that uses each and every word and punctuation symbol. While in general the themes of the haikus refer to nature, animals and plants, the words invite each individual viewer to create their own narrative, with personal connections colored by time and place. Learn more about the artwork on our website. Pictured: Jorge Méndez Blake, Dismantled Landscape (José Juan Tablada’s Haikus), 2022 This work is generously sponsored by The Macallan Art Prize. PHRASEOLOGY, ON VIEW NOW Examine the use of text in contemporary artworks in Phraseology, where artists merge form and idea by creating works that contain text, familiar phrases and poetry. Artists present new or different perspectives by providing conflicting methods of observing the art in this exhibition of works from the collection and works on-loan. Explore Phraseology during your next visit! Pictured: Phraseology, installation view, 2022 Generous support for this exhibition provided by Art Bridges. Phraseology is supported in part by the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation. KNIGHT FOUNDATION AWARDS, $1.25M TO THE BASS The Bass was honored to receive $1.25 million in arts investments from Knight Foundation during Miami Art Week. As Knight Arts Miami Grantee, The Bass will direct this support towards expanding art exhibitions and public programs that explore the intersection between art and technology. Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Executive Director and Chief Curator for the museum was excited to announce the award. “Building on The Bass’ established art commissioning program, Knight Foundation's grant will allow the museum to work with artists to push the boundaries of technology, by creating new works of art and also experimenting with new ways to distribute art experiences," she said. The Knight Foundation award comes on the heels of The Bass receiving $20.1 million from Miami Beach's General Obligation Bond (G.O. Bond), which passed in the November 6 election. The bond, which totals $159 million and supports 16 local city-owned cultural facilities, improves resiliency and infrastructure for arts and cultural groups to transform and expand their impact on the community. With the G.O. Bond funds, The Bass plans to update Pritzker Prize-winning architect Arata Isozaki’s original 1995 building concept by adding a new wing south-west of the museum, as well as undertake infrastructure enhancements to the current facility.
