She often uses the repetition of images with subtle light variations to create intimate narratives and poetics loaded with nostalgia. Exploring the natural landscape, she uses specific vegetation and foliage as the main subjects of her photo-based, mixed-media works. Candria’s premise is that the work will look familiar – not because we can visually recognize them – but because of the emotional response arises within us, appearing to be linked to landscapes that are significant in our memory. In the creative process, Candria intervenes the photographic images by juxtaposing, multiplying and fragmenting them. The sharpest images get mixed with the more diffuse ones until they turn into almost imperceptible forms or completely disappear to become a simple plain color. As happens with many of our memories that become blurry over time and then come back to us as incomplete narratives. CREATIVE WORKSHOP Painting in the Garden with David Sexton Sunday, August 6 • 1pm–3pm Join us for an afternoon of painting butterflies in the Butterfly Gallery! - Dawn Atkins Promoted to Principal Dancer with Miami City Ballet
Hailed for “great poise, aplomb, marvelous extensions, and an unexpected durability beneath all that grace (San Francisco Classical Voice),” 29-year-old Dawn Atkins has been promoted from Principal Soloist to Principal Dancer with Miami City Ballet. The promotion was made by MCB Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez, following the February 2023 performance of Martha Graham’s Diversion of Angels (pictured below). The 2023-24 season starting in October 2023 marks Dawn’s inaugural season as Principal. With her promotion, Dawn rose through the ranks in record speed: she joined Miami City Ballet as a Soloist in 2021-22, promoted to Principal Soloist at the end of the season, followed by Principal during the 2022-23 season. “Being promoted to Principal dancer with Miami City Ballet is humbling and immensely meaningful,” says Dawn. “I am honored to be a part of a truly wonderful organization, and to share with our audiences all the work and love I have put into this art form since I was a child. I am grateful that I am able to say ‘I achieved my childhood dream’. I look forward to next season at Miami City Ballet as I continue my growth as a dancer and hope to touch as many people as possible.” During MCB’s 2022-23 season, Dawn performed featured roles in Balanchine’s Diamonds from Jewels, Symphony in Three Movements, Sugar Plum Fairy and Dew Drop in The Nutcracker, Agon, Jerome Robbin’s Antique Epigraphs and Afternoon of a Faun, and Martha Graham’s Diversion of Angels. Other repertoire include William Forsythe’s The Second Detail, Blake Works, Playlist (EP), Pas / Parts 2018, and In The Middle Somewhat Elevated, Justin Peck’s In Creases (Pas De Deux), August Bournonville’s Pas De Six, Yakobson’s Pas de Quatre, Snow Queen and Dew Drop in Nissinen’s The Nutcracker, The Summer Fairy in Ashton’s Cinderella, Myrtha in Perrot/Coralli’s Giselle, The Crystal Fountain Fairy in Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty, Jorma Elo’s Bach Cello Suites, Carmen, Fifth Symphony of Jean Sibelius, and Lost By Last, Lady Capulet in Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.2, Rubies, Episodes, Coppelia, Chaccone, Theme and Variations, and Stravinsky Violin Concerto, as well as Interplay, Fancy Free, The Concert, and Glass Pieces by Jerome Robbins, and more. Having grown up in Middletown Springs, Vermont, Dawn continued her dance training at The School of Richmond Ballet, followed by North Carolina School of the Arts, under the direction of Ethan Stiefel. Dawn joined Boston Ballet School as a trainee in 2011 and Boston Ballet II in 2012. In 2013, she was a Princess Grace Award nominee and was promoted to Artist of the Company. Dawn was promoted to Second Soloist at Boston Ballet in 2019. In 2021, Dawn joined Miami City Ballet as a Soloist. Dawn was promoted to Principal Soloist in 2022 and now Principal in 2023. A pillar of women’s health and wellness, Dawn complements her ballet training with Pilates, acupuncture, and a nutritional regimen centered on clean, holistic whole foods and plant-based meals. - Miami Selected as Finalist for $1M Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge Grant
Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced 17 U.S. cities are finalists to receive grants of up to $1 million each as part of the Public Art Challenge, a program launched in 2014 to support temporary public art projects that address an urgent civic issue. More than 150 cities from 40 U.S. states applied, and the most frequently cited issues they would tackle include urban revitalization, environmental sustainability, and equity. Proposals also included addressing unsheltered communities, gun safety, and public health. Projects included a wide range of creative expression such as sculptures, murals, performances, digital projects, light installations, and festivals. Bloomberg Philanthropies will select up to 10 winners from among these 17 finalists in fall 2023 to execute their projects within the next two years. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies and 108th mayor of New York City. “This year’s proposals show that public art, and the partnerships they forge between artists and local governments, is stronger than ever.” In November 2022, Bloomberg Philanthropies invited mayors of U.S. cities with 30,000 residents or more to submit proposals for projects that celebrate creativity, catalyze public-private collaborations, and strengthen local economies. Bloomberg Philanthropies has selected the following 17 cities from across the nation to advance to the next round of the Public Art Challenge by submitting more detailed plans for their projects. Miami, FL - Climate: The City of Miami proposes “1,000,000 Butterflies,” a digital mural on The Underline, an urban trail beneath Miami’s Metrorail, to prompt climate change action; and the development of gardens throughout the city to increase green spaces. “This year’s Public Art Challenge applications showcased a commitment to embracing the creative sector as a means to develop solutions to a range of complex urban issues,” said Kate D. Levin, who leads the Arts Program at Bloomberg Philanthropies. “These finalists all proposed especially compelling creative ideas, along with robust community partnerships, and we are looking forward to learning more about their plans.” Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support for the winning Public Art Challenge cities will be part of a committed, catalytic consortium of funders. The Bloomberg Philanthropies grants will cover project-related expenditures including development, execution, and marketing, but will not fund 100 percent of the total project costs. The second round of Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, awarded to five cities in 2018, catalyzed more than $100 million in economic benefit for local economies and illuminated civic issues including climate change, neighborhood blight, healing after gun violence, and commemorating the centennial of Greenwood’s 1921 Black Wall Street Massacre. Cities in the 2018 Public Art Challenge were able to spark local investment, stimulate new forms of partnership, improve community wellbeing, and create inclusive spaces to discuss complex social issues. The first round of Public Art Challenge winners in 2015 included Los Angeles, California; Gary, Indiana; Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York (a collaborative project). Their public art projects opened in 2016, drawing more than 10 million visitors. The projects spurred civic leaders and residents, as well as local nonprofits and businesses, to work together to advance solutions to critical urban challenges such as abandoned properties, environmental sustainability, community-police relations, and creative-sector economic development.
