She will be working closely with the agency’s global leadership team, especially with the U.S.’s creative leads Ricardo Casal and Juan Javier Peña Plaza, NA CCOs & Partners, and Bruno Acanfora and Ariel Abramovici, ECDs at GUT LA, as well as Carmen Rodriguez, Global Chief Growth Officer & Partner, to continue ensuring that all GUT’s U.S. clients execute gutsy work that builds and drives success for their businesses. Alfaro will report to GUT’s Global CEO Andrea Diquez and she will be based in Miami. Sandra Alfaro, GUT's first U.S. CEO. “Sandra is an incredible business leader. She understands where the market and consumers are going so she is the best at setting up clients’ businesses for success,” said Diquez. “Also, her integrated thinking amazes me every time. She’s able to merge media, creativity and data seamlessly into business, and has created models across many categories. And above all, Sandra champions people and creativity, and her heart is huge. Those qualities for me are why she is perfect for our culture and this new role, and is key to GUT’s future as we continue to grow globally.” Alfaro brings over 25 years of experience across the advertising and marketing industries. Hailing from DDB Chicago, she most recently served as its President. During her time there, she helped the agency launch its first dedicated social practice, and played a key role in new business. Before DDB, she was at Horizon Media, where she was the first leader of culture-first creative agency 305 Worldwide, a joint-venture with Pitbull. And prior to that, she was the Managing Director of Grey Wing for five years, and helped reignite Wing’s leadership in the industry, and helped them win major clients including Pfizer, Papa John’s, Lilly, and Nestle. The GUT Miami team at GUT's Miami headquarters. “The culture of GUT is what most excites me. They are a brave agency for brave clients with clarity on its values of Courage, Transparency and Intuition, which means that GUT knows what it is, and what it’s not, which is inspiring and exciting,” said Alfaro. “In my new role, I hope to inspire the U.S. team to continue delivering brave work to its amazing clients, while ensuring the agency operates both effectively and efficiently. Growth is my passion, so it’s always my goal to inspire teams to embrace a growth mindset in all we do, in both the agency, as well as with clients. I view myself as a servant leader, so I will focus my energy on helping teams thrive and reach their greatest potential, while also being open to learn from their diverse points of view.” In her 20+ years in Account Management, Alfaro has actively led campaigns across major categories including in Retail, Automotive, CPG, Beer, Pharma, Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Apparel/Fashion and Beauty, for clients such as The Home Depot, Nissan, Heineken, Stouffer’s, Old Navy, and many others. As the first U.S. born in her Peruvian family, Alfaro has always been interested in learning from different cultures and perspectives in both her personal and professional lives. She also earned her Professional Coaching Certification in 2019, and founded Power & Grace, a boutique consultancy offering Life and Business Coaching, Corporate Training and Public Speaking. “After five years of really exciting growth, it was finally time to appoint someone who could help us continue to lead and grow our U.S. offices successfully, which is why we entrust Sandra with this amazing responsibility,” said Anselmo Ramos, Co-Founder and Creative Chairman at GUT. “We also wanted to find someone who shared our People-first philosophy and could help us perpetuate it even more across GUT Miami and GUT LA. We also love the fact that Sandra already worked with Andrea in the past and they perfectly complement each other; we’re strong believers in the power of the second time. I have no doubt that Sandra will successfully lead us into our new chapter of growth and success for our offices and clients across the U.S., and Gaston, Andrea and I, along with our leadership team, will be there to support her every step of the way." Alfaro’s appointment comes off the heels of GUT Network’s strong year at Cannes Lions, where it won a total of 35 Lions, including 3 Grand Prix, 8 Golds, 12 Silvers and 12 Bronzes across its Network. It also became Cannes Lions’ Independent Network of the Year, LATAM Regional Network of the Year, and its GUT Buenos Aires office was honored as its Independent Agency of the Year and Agency of the Year – the first for Argentina. GUT also recently expanded its footprint to Europe, with the opening of its seventh office in Amsterdam earlier this year. Alfaro earned her MBA in Marketing and Management from NYU’s Stern School of Business and her BSBA in International Business from The American University. She began her career at Saatchi & Saatchi, which was where she discovered her passion for advertising and business leadership. Later, at The Vidal Partnership (TVP), she spent over a decade building a best-in-class Account Management department, reaching the role of Managing Partner of the agency before she was 30. While at TVP, Alfaro was recognized by Ad Age as one of its Women to Watch lists in 2005, becoming the youngest recipient to receive that honor at the time. • Capturing Hearts and Minds: A Cinematic Odyssey with Filmmaker Chris Robert

Miami Living Magazine was honored to engage in an exclusive interview with the esteemed filmmaker Chris Robert. Known for his distinguished work on acclaimed films such as "Dallas Buyers Club" and “The Big Wedding,” Chris brings a fresh and vibrant energy to the screen. With his upcoming feature film "Expectations" generating buzz, we eagerly anticipated diving into the captivating world he has created. But there's more to Chris than his blockbuster success; he is a humble, kind-hearted storyteller with a passion for making a difference. Get ready for an illuminating exploration as we delve into the depths of Chris Robert's inspiring journey as a filmmaker. ML: Hey Chris! We're thrilled to chat with you about your upcoming film “Expectations”. Can you give us a sneak peek into the unique elements that make it stand out from the crowd? CR: These days, Miami is like my backyard. So it’s really exciting to have the opportunity to connect with you all at Miami Living! So far, I’ve found that South Florida amounts to so much more than all of the positive things on the surface. The colors, flavors, and people are so vibrant. There’s nowhere quite like it anywhere else in the world. The same can be said about my upcoming film, "Expectations". We had a saying when making this film, that our endeavor was to bring the classic Charles Dickens novel to a new generation and a new audience. I think we did just that, trading in what was once the drab and gray Victorian England of the traditional literature into a vibrant winter wonderland of contemporary characters that feature bright colors, and even more luminous personalities. No one needs to be familiar with the source material to go on this ride. Just be ready to find the love of a found family of siblings who have chosen to hilariously compete with one another for an enormous inheritance, while being snowed in during a holiday getaway where there might be a questionable death, or two. You know, the usual entertaining stuff to watch as it plays out. ML: "Expectations” features a diverse and talented cast. How did their unique personalities and backgrounds contribute to the on-set vibe? Any memorable moments you would like to share? CR: The characters of Expectations are only as fun as they are because they were all brought to life by the extremely talented cast that we were so fortunate to assemble and collaborate with during this cinematic journey. And you’re entirely right, all of them brought unique, and diverse personalities and experiences, which we leaned into when bringing the characters to life. I grew up internationally, and so much of the casting was done to reflect the way that I’ve had the pleasure to see the world. Featuring a multitude of various ethnicities, cultures, and accents. Even Estella, as played by the dynamic Blu Hunt, can be seen in a different way than ever before in any other adaptation of Great Expectations. Because we had the fortune of visiting this collection of characters fresh and anew in their 20s and in our modern society of 2023, we had the unique opportunity to show them all growing over the course of their weekend together. I’ve found, at least in my experience, we often have seminal moments in our lives that can change the entire course or path that we are undertaking. This weekend does that through hijinks and humor, but also because every single character finds themselves in a new place at the story’s end. All thanks to this delightful group! As far as memorable moments, I fear there are too many to share without giving away too much of the story. But I will say, if you enjoy Samuel Arnold’s cheeky and comedic chops on Emily in Paris, you’ll be very excited to see an entirely different and hilarious performance as he portrays his character, Bernard. MLM: "Expectations” has been described as a film that makes a difference. Can you elaborate on this? And in what ways do you believe cinema has the power to create impact and influence society positively? CR: At the very least, I sure hope that Expectations creates some laughs! But in sincerity, the film is really an exercise in identifying something that I’ve come to very much believe in, including in regards to my own life. We’re all so fortunate to be touched by the many individuals and lives we encounter. Many of those people become our found family, which can be just as important as the one we are born into. Expectations is really a journey we’re all going on, to find not only a healthy way to express ourselves, because that’s incredibly important, but also how we fit into our societal and familial units without friction or fray. Over the course of the film, you’ll see all of the characters both familiar from the source material, and new, struggle with this notion and how it affects their own individual identities. For my part, that’s okay, because I think that’s a journey we all undertake in our twenties. There’s nothing wrong with taking time to answer the questions of who we are, what we stand for, and where it is we’re really going. We’re all so lucky to live in an age where we’re afforded the time and opportunity to do just that. For these characters, who are all adopted siblings of a sort, to be thrust together after years of feeling a sense of competition with one another for success or funds from their guardian benefactor, to have to deal with one another in person and face to face is now a shock, both dramatically, and in a comedic sort of way with how it all plays out. But this notion of competition and what we all feel we must do to be heard and get ahead is very real, and also understanding the vows we hold to ourselves and what is healthy and what is not is just as real and important to me today as it was when I wrote the script. I think cinema is one of the artistic tools we have in society to showcase these real issues that many of us struggle with, and like this case and this film, hopefully bring some solace and comfort through laughter as we all work our way through it, knowing we’ll be better on the other side. At least our characters in Expectations certainly hope that’s the case! MLM: Your personal journey as an orphan has undoubtedly shaped your perspectives on family and belonging. How do you infuse these themes into your projects, including "Expectations,” and why are they significant to you? CR: I’ve had the luxury and privilege of being able to work on many films in my career, and the ones that have always connected with me the most are the ones about community and family. I learned a long time ago when I was a child that no one can control how they start their journey. That part in life is not up to us. But where we go, and how we get there, well we certainly have a say in that! I’ve been really fortunate to make many relationships along my journey, and most of those people are still with me in my life today. I think what’s critical for all of us is to take the time to reflect on the type of energy we all permit into our lives. There are certain people and situations we all will vibe with, and there’s nothing wrong whatsoever when there are certain circumstances we just don’t vibe with. Being able to determine that, and determine the type of individuals we let into our lives is so important. For my part, it’s because of the strength of those relationships that I’ve made that I get the opportunity to create characters in my projects that are both on point, and off the mark. Just like people, no one character is just plain good or bad. We’re all shades of the environments we come from and the tapestries that our lives weave. Because I’m always interested in understanding these fundamentals, and trying to accept the many differences of the people around me, I feel very fortunate to get to utilize all of that material into my films. You’ll find Expectations is not an exception to this whatsoever. In fact, if you pay very close attention, you might find glimmers of people in my life and artists I’ve previously collaborated with inside each and every character. MLM: You are intriguingly known for bringing a unique superpower to every project you sign on to. What is your special superpower charge and how does it shape your approach to filmmaking? CR: I’m flattered to hear that! If only I did have a superpower, perhaps I could use it to make more of a difference. But in lieu of such a skill, I will say that something that’s important to me for every one of my projects is to grow at least a little bit on every outing. That doesn’t mean necessarily artistically specifically. Sometimes it can be as simple as learning something about myself, something that works, or doesn’t work. Because I’ve found knowing that things that do not work or that we do not like can be just as valuable as finding the ones that do work. Don’t laugh, but for me, the best life charge is going on an adventure! Because of the international influence on my upbringing, I’m always a bit fired up with every trip I take. Because I travel frequently for work, as I do quite a bit of international shooting, I try to mix in some travels for fun every chance I get. There’s also so many fantastic places in South Florida to visit, from equestrian experiences in Hollywood, to the rich art deco-infused history of Miami, to the majesty of the Everglades themselves. I’m learning something new every single day, and that charges me up and inspires me to continue to expand the stories that I’m telling through my films. MLM: In addition to your film work, you're also involved in various philanthropic endeavors. How do you balance your passion for storytelling with making a positive impact on the world around you? CR: I’m a big believer in all things in balance. Of course, balance can have a different meaning for different people, so I’d encourage everyone to sort out what that means to them! But for my part, philanthropic endeavors have always been very important to me. I’ve been interested in horses ever since I befriended my very first one in Australia when I was a child. For that reason, the opportunity to be involved in equestrian medical research is my way of continuing my connectivity to those wonderful animals that helped shape some of the joy of my life. I’m also really thrilled to be involved with our own local water brand, Jovē. The brand promotes healthy and clean drinking water both here in the states, and internationally as well. It’s such a critical component for life that we all have access to clean water, and I’m always honored to support local Floridian initiatives. All of these causes and initiatives that I’m so thankful to be a part of feed into all of my stories across television and film. There’s so many that probably seem disconnected in life, but I can say that if I didn’t participate in these causes and endeavors, my storytelling just wouldn’t be as good because I fear I’d become too one-dimensional. It’s by achieving a balance in my own life that I’ve found my storytelling to be maximized, and much, much more rewarding, too! MLM: We have heard that you are currently living in sunny South Florida. What led you to move to this area and what do you like most about living here? CR: I’m loving every minute that I get to spend in the state of Florida! Funnily enough, the very first trip my wife and I took when we got engaged was here to this state. It’s always held a very special place for me, ever since. Because of how often I travel for my films, and my need to be in Los Angeles and New York, Florida offers a precious refuge that just feels like home. One of the things that I’ve been taken with is the kindness of South Florida and its residents. There’s always so much to do and so much to discover. You’ll find me here whenever I have a break from work, likely writing my next screenplay that you’ll eventually see on the screen. Florida is such a creative hub, and I’m thankful to be a part of it! MLM: Looking ahead, what exciting future projects are on your radar that you care to share? CR: I’m really excited to say that I’m going to have a reunion with one of my producers on Expectations, Dave Hansen. We’ll be collaborating on a film that infuses the notion of the importance of family (what else!) and our internal strife when it comes to our work ambitions. It’s called Boy in the Moon, and it’s about something else we Floridians prize: the space program and NASA! I’m excited to be a part of the journey as this film showcases the life of a young, successful rocket engineer as he struggles a tragedy that strikes with the family that anchors him here on earth, and the pull of his dreams beyond the stratosphere as he makes space travel cheaper, greener, and more available. How it turns out, well, you’ll have to see. CONTACT: Social Media - chrisrob3rt By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Chris Knight

In the summer of 2018, he moved to New York City where he worked with Chef Matt Lambert at Michelin-starred Musket Room, which later led to his opening as Sous Chef at Francie in Brooklyn helmed by Chef Chris Cipollone. Francie quickly earned a Michelin star in the first few months of opening. Lucas is now the Executive Chef at the recently opened La Rubia in 11 Howard Hotel and Her Name Was Carmen restaurant in Soho, Manhattan. Can you tell us about your culinary background and experience? My culinary background started when I was 18 years old in Portland, Oregon, where I had moved to attend college. I needed a job and restaurants were some of the only jobs that would consider hiring me with zero experience. I started as a dishwasher/ prep-cook and worked my way up through the ranks. Eventually, after 3 years I decided to make a career out of it and moved home to San Francisco to try and work at some of the prestigious Michelin-rated kitchens. My career then led me to New York City. Having grown up in San Francisco, I was looking for a new challenge, and I had always been curious about living in NYC– even as a child. What inspired you to become a chef, and how did your passion for cooking develop? I fell in love with restaurants almost immediately after my first job. The tight-knit community within each restaurant has given me some of my best friends. Working actively with my hands has always been more engaging for me personally, and I loved the fast-paced environment as well. My passion for cooking developed through making my guests happy through food and the experience we provided at a fine-dining level. Hearing feedback from guests, such as “that's one of the best meals I've ever had” is a feeling that you constantly chase as a Chef. Can you tell us a bit more about the two restaurants where you are Executive Chef: Her Name Was Carmen and La Rubia at 11 Howard. How do they differ? La Rubia is located in Soho on the corner of Lafayette and Howard street on the bottom floor of the 11 Howard Hotel. We are an intimate 40-seat restaurant specializing in classic cocktails, seafood, and raw preparations. Her name Was Carmen, also in Soho, just a short walk away, is a slightly larger operation with a two floor dining room and cocktail lounge. We offer a full service dinner that ideally leads you downstairs to the lounge to dance the night away. Both restaurants lean towards Latin flavors as our owner Andres Diaz is from Colombia, and my heritage on my mothers side is Cuban. While Her Name Was Carmen is seafood leaning, there are still plenty of non-seafood options. What are the signature dishes at Her Name Was Carmen and La Rubia. What makes them unique? Her Name Was Carmen’s signature dishes include the daily grilled fish options. When I first started, the Binchotan Coal Burning Grill in the kitchen wasn't being used as much as I would have like, and grilling is easily my favorite way to prepare fish. You just can't beat the charred smokey flavor. Currently, we are grilling a whole Branzino served with a bright, acidic beurre blanc and a radish and citrus salad served atop the fish. Additionally, we are grilling our Arctic Char, and serving it with blistered and marinated sungold tomatoes, shaved summer squash, and a warm tomato water broth infused with basil and lemon verbena. At La Rubia, our signature is the Grand Rubia Seafood Tower. It showcases what we do best– three layers of our freshest shellfish, which always includes oysters, and occasionally razor clams, lobster tail, ocktail blue crystal prawns from New Zealand, and more; as well as fresh sashimi, and a bowl of our Dungeness Crab. How do you approach seasonal menu planning and creating new dishes? At both restaurants, we change our dishes with the passing seasons as soon as new and exciting products become available. Some changes may be minor while most are complete reworks with new proteins that accompany those ingredients more cohesively. I draw inspiration for new dishes from seasonality, a style of cooking that was drilled into me from earlier in my career cooking in San Francisco. If there are new, delicious, exciting products to work with we are always trying to find a way to incorporate them into the menu. How does your Cuban background influence your cooking? Did you learn from your mother/grandmother? My mother was and still is an excellent cook. While I wasn't necessarily cooking side by side with my mother growing up, I certainly inherited a knack for it through her dedication to serving us home-cooked meals from scratch, which were often classic Cuban dishes like picadillo, ropa vieja, etc. Walking into my grandmother's home, even if you just came from a 6-course meal, she would sit you down and fill up a plate with black beans, rice, plantains, and whatever else she had cooking. She always had something ready to nourish her family and guests, and ultimately, that is what true hospitality is all about. Tell us about La Rubia and Her Name Was Carmen’s signature dessert dish, Terely’s Flan. I wish I felt comfortable calling it MY signature dessert, but this flan recipe has been passed down from my grandmother's family, to my mother (Terely), and now to me. We actually do not know how many previous generations had this exact recipe prior to my grandmother. It's an incredible recipe– very simple to make, but the ratios are just spot on, and it has an incredible creamy texture. Growing up, we ate this flan for special occasions. In the last 5 years, my mother has started her own business in San Francisco called What the Flan SF. Her creativity and work ethic are something I constantly look up to. La Rubia and Her Name Was Carmen serve the classic vanilla flavor; however, my mother’s flan business has developed 10 different flavors, and can even be bought in select grocery stores in San Francisco and privately catered in the Bay Area. To say I'm proud to serve this dessert is an understatement, and it offers a glimpse into my childhood. What’s next for Her Name Was Carmen and La Rubia at 11 Howard? We want to develop La Rubia into a restaurant that becomes a mainstay in Soho. When people think of where to get refreshing raw bar bites and delicious cocktails we want them to think of La Rubia. New Yorkers have so many options when it comes to dining out, so for us becoming one of the first names that comes to mind when the mood strikes for seafood is a challenge we are excited to take on. At Her Name Was Carmen, we are fortunate enough to already have a very strong reputation. Everyone knows that a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night spent having dinner upstairs followed by dancing downstairs at Carmen is a super fun time that often creates lasting memories with friends. Our goal is to continue to push the cuisine in a direction that evens the playing field with our famous cocktail lounge downstairs. We want people to think of Her name was Carmen as an excellent place to have dinner, dance, and create lasting memories from the second our guests walk through the door. • Suzana Pires Unleashes Her Creative Brilliance and Inspires Global Transformation

Miami Living Magazine is thrilled to present an exclusive interview with the multitalented Suzana Pires, an accomplished actress, writer, producer, entrepreneur, and now, an esteemed author. With her highly anticipated book, "Unleashed," set to release on August 19th, Suzana brings forth a riveting guide that not only empowers women but also calls for a transformative awakening of the human spirit. As the founder of the women's empowerment organization DONA DE SI, she has already made a profound impact on countless lives in Brazil and is now expanding her reach globally, inspiring individuals worldwide to embrace their inner strength and seize opportunities fearlessly. Amidst her awe-inspiring journey in the entertainment industry, starring in numerous films, telenovelas, and series, Suzana's creative brilliance knows no bounds. Join us as we delve into her remarkable career, the inspiration behind "Unleashed," and her relentless pursuit of breaking barriers and advocating for equality and empowerment on both the stage and the page. MLM: Congratulations on your new book "Unleashed"! Can you tell us what inspired you to write this powerful guide and how it ties into your women's empowerment organization, Dona de Si? SP: Thanks a lot. What inspired me was my own experience as a woman that achieved success in my field, as well as the daily work with all women empowered by the DONA DE SI organization. I've seen the struggles of real-life women and I had to write about those experiences, blending the DONA DE SI method with my professional journey. I am not profiling myself as a powerful woman, instead I show all my mistakes and how I moved on. MLM: "Unleashed" aims to bring awareness to the feminist movement and awaken the power within. Could you share some key insights or takeaways that readers can expect from your book? SP: Yes, it's a pleasure to talk about this issue. The first key insight is that we have three main issues that disrupt our growth. They are: work overload – we are always worried about our work, husband, and kids and culturally it is difficult to prioritize ourselves. The second issue is the oppression that we have to face every second of every day, from subtle ones to abusive ones, and then we have loneliness that brings us the weird thought that we are impostors, even if we are successful. We really need to understand how to neutralize those three issues in order to build better lives. MLM: Your work with Dona de Si has made a significant impact on the lives of women in Brazil. How do you plan to expand this positive influence globally to help others worldwide "unleash" their own power? SP: When I signed a contract with a US publisher, I started the expansion of this message. The next step is to translate this method to women in the US, and then start to accelerate women globally. I am working on it every day! It's been amazing because we all have the same problems; doesn´t matter if you are Brazilian, American or Japanese. MLM: Your acting career in Brazil has been truly remarkable, with numerous successes in both film and television. How has your journey in the entertainment industry influenced the themes and messages you convey in "Unleashed"? SP: Everything that I wrote or acted in film or television in Brazil I took care to bring an important message to women. This has always been my key artist issue. I´ve started doing that as a public figure with my actions and I expand that to my world vision. MLM: As Brazil's first female showrunner, you've broken barriers and achieved significant milestones. How do you see your role as a trailblazer and advocate for women's empowerment in the entertainment world? SP: I am the first actress who is also a showrunner. My role is to produce, write and act, always requesting women´s inclusion and expanding female narratives in film. When I meet new writers, directors and actresses I can hire them to work with me. I've had a lot of “fights” with the established players. At the beginning, in 2005, it was a war, but now, almost 20 years later, they respect me and buy my series or movies. Now, the game is a little better for me in Brazil and even better in America. MLM: In "Unleashed," you emphasize taking control of one's destiny and creating opportunities. Could you share a personal experience where you applied these principles to your own life and career? SP: Yes, creating opportunities is what I most love to do in life! I worked for the third biggest tv network in the world for 24 years but when my material was no longer considered good, I had a meeting where I heard the craziest thing ever. My boss said to me that the issue wasn’t the big numbers that I had, but my happiness!!! My joy was the reason that my team was so tied to me and that was a problem for them. What?!?! So, I said to my boss that my joy, my happiness and my competence wasn't for sale and we ended the long contract six months later. I was super sad, but I decided to keep working on my material in English. Six months later, a British studio bought my material and they brought me to Los Angeles to work for them. One year later, I am based here, working (now on strike). That´s a journey that I am super proud of because I've kept my happiness, even when I am sad. Self-respect and creating opportunity are the key to keeping your dignity in such a crazy world. ML: You're also an accomplished writer and executive producer. How do you balance these different roles, and do you find that your various creative pursuits complement each other in any way? SP: It took me a long time to understand all those roles and to balance them in my routine. Now, I have some rules. For example: the actress is the boss and she needs one project a year, the writer is the one who brings the idea to the paper and the producer is the alchemist, who is going to bring what is in the paper to reality. It is a lot of work but after all these years I have long term partners to make this work. To have a career with this kind of excellence I have chosen not to have kids. MLM: "Unleashed" is particularly focused on helping Latina women, but you mention that all women and men can benefit from its message. What universal elements in your book do you believe will resonate with a broad and diverse audience? SP: Yes, it is for all women because we have one thing universally in common: we are exhausted with all our social roles. UNLEASHED is not a guide that will tell you how to live, but to remind you that you are alive. MLM: With your writing work, what future projects or themes are you excited to explore, and how do you see your voice contributing to the evolving landscape of entertainment content? SP: I can contribute by making room for women in any work space. Not only with my behavior, but bringing content such as UNLEASHED that will help each one of us to find our own strength. I have a lot of great future projects, but for now I am focused on UNLEASHED and picketing with WGA and SAG AFTRA. First, our labor rights, right? • Good Nutrition Can Contribute to Keeping COVID-19 & Other Diseases Away

The connection between the pandemic and our dietary habits is undeniable. The stress of isolation coupled with a struggling economy has caused many of us to seek comfort with our old friends: Big Mac, Tom Collins, Ben and Jerry. But overindulging in this kind of food and drink might not just be affecting your waistline, but could potentially put you at greater risk of illness by hindering your immune system. Hear the word “nutrition,” and often what comes to mind are fad diets, juice “cleanses” and supplements. Americans certainly seem concerned with their weight; 45 million of us spend US$33 billion annually on weight loss products. But one in five Americans consumes nearly no vegetables – less than one serving per day. When the emphasis is on weight loss products, and not healthy day-to-day eating, the essential role that nutrition plays in keeping us well never gets communicated. Among the many things I teach students in my nutritional biochemistry course is the clear relationship between a balanced diet and a strong, well-regulated immune system. Along with social distancing measures and effective vaccines, a healthy immune system is our best defense against coronavirus infection. To keep it that way, proper nutrition is an absolute must. Although not a replacement for medicine, good nutrition can work synergistically with medicine to improve vaccine effectiveness, reduce the prevalence of chronic disease and lower the burden on the health care system. The Western diet is packed with cholesterol, saturated fat and sugar. Tara Moore via Getty Images The impact of the Western diet Scientists know that people with preexisting health conditions are at greater risk for severe COVID-19 infections. That includes those with diabetes, obesity, and kidney, lung or cardiovascular disease. Many of these conditions are linked to a dysfunctional immune system. Patients with cardiovascular or metabolic disease have a delayed immune response, giving viral invaders a head start. When that happens, the body reacts with a more intense inflammatory response, and healthy tissues are damaged along with the virus. It’s not yet clear how much this damage factors into the increased mortality rate, but it is a factor. What does this have to do with nutrition? The Western diet typically has a high proportion of red meat, saturated fat and what’s known as “bliss point foods” rich in sugar and salt. Adequate fruit and vegetable consumption is missing. Despite the abundance of calories that often accompanies the Western diet, many Americans don’t consume nearly enough of the essential nutrients our bodies need to function properly, including vitamins A, C and D, and the minerals iron and potassium. And that, at least in part, causes a dysfunctional immune system: too few vitamins and minerals, and too many empty calories. A healthy immune system responds quickly to limit or prevent infection, but it also promptly “turns down the dial” to avoid damaging the cells of the body. Sugar disrupts this balance. A high proportion of refined sugar in the diet can cause chronic, low-grade inflammation in addition to diabetes and obesity. Essentially, that “dial” is never turned all the way off. While inflammation is a natural part of the immune response, it can be harmful when it’s constantly active. Indeed, obesity is itself characterized by chronic, low-grade inflammation and a dysregulated immune response. And research shows that vaccines may be less effective in obese people. The same applies to those who regularly drink too much alcohol. Nutrition education is critical to developing healthy dietary habits. westend61 via Getty Images How nutrients help Nutrients, essential substances that help us grow properly and remain healthy, help maintain the immune system. In contrast to the delayed responses associated with malnutrition, vitamin A fights against multiple infectious diseases, including measles. Along with vitamin D, it regulates the immune system and helps to prevent its overactivation. Vitamin C, an antioxidant, protects us from the injury caused by free radicals. Polyphenols, a wide-ranging group of molecules found in all plants, also have anti-inflammatory properties. There’s plenty of evidence to show a diet rich in plant polyphenols can lower the risk of chronic conditions, like hypertension, insulin insensitivity and cardiovascular disease. Why don’t we Americans eat more of these plant-based foods and fewer of the bliss-based foods? It’s complicated. People are swayed by advertising and influenced by hectic schedules. One starting place would be to teach people how to eat better from an early age. Nutrition education should be emphasized, from kindergarten through high school to medical schools. Millions of Americans live in food deserts, having limited access to healthy foods. In these circumstances, education must be paired with increased access. These long-term goals could bring profound returns with a relatively small investment. Meantime, all of us can take small steps to incrementally improve our own dietary habits. I’m not suggesting we stop eating cake, french fries and soda completely. But we as a society have yet to realize the food that actually makes us feel good and healthy is not comfort food. The COVID-19 pandemic won’t be the last we face, so it’s vital that we use every preventive tool we as a society have. Think of good nutrition as a seat belt for your health; it doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick, but it helps to ensure the best outcomes.
