At the Coral Gables atelier, the design team immerses clients in personal design and styling. This includes bespoke personalized recommendations tailored for each client, and styling women for weddings, galas, mitzvahs, quinceañeras, prom, homecoming and beyond. Stylists assist women in curating a collection of evening gowns, cocktail dresses, suiting, separates, and jumpsuits; or can create a couture design exclusively for them. The design team’s eye for high-quality fabrics sourced from top fabric mills in Italy, France and Turkey; and personalized attention to the creation and tailoring of each garment, have created an international following for the luxurious, original and cosmopolitan designs from A-list celebrities, such as Ana Navarro, Gloria Estefan and Rebel Wilson, to South Florida tastemakers. In addition, the design team uses details from the special event such as venue, season, formality, color scheme and fashion style to help curate the look that each individual envisions. Sample-makers educated in the timeless tradition of couture sewing techniques carefully measure clients and alter garments to their physique. Consultations last one hour. Rene Ruiz Collection’s corporate office is located in Hialeah, FL. With boutiques in Gulfstream Park Village in Hallandale Beach, FL, Boca Raton, FL and Manhasset NY, Rene Ruiz Collection has been a cornerstone of the South Florida community, dressing notable community leaders and television personalities for galas and social events. - A Journey Through the Veil: The Mystical Lens of Juan Sebastian
In the quiet corridors of the art world, where whispered secrets intertwine with the echo of creativity, exists an artist whose work transcends the boundaries of the tangible. Colombian-born fine-art photographer Juan Sebastian, a masterful weaver of dreams, invites us into his fantastical realm where veiled bodies and cascading fabrics become conduits to the ethereal. In a captivating conversation, he unfolds the tapestry of his artistic vision, revealing the secrets behind his enchanting world of magical realism. MIAMI LIVING: Juan, your latest collection, “With the Voices of Other Eternals,” is an intriguing dance between the real and the surreal. Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind this mesmerizing series? JUAN SEBASTIAN: The inspiration for this series stemmed from my fascination with the delicate balance between wonder and disillusionment. Childhood fantasies, so pure and boundless, often fade as we step into adulthood. I wanted to rekindle those lost dreams, to create a collective reflection on the bittersweet journey of growing up. Inspired by literary luminaries like Gabriel García Márquez and Isabel Allende, I aimed to blur the boundaries between dreams and reality, crafting a visual symphony where light and dark harmonize. ML: Your work is deeply entwined with the symbolism of fabric, transforming it from a mere material into a doorway to the mystical. How did this fascination with fabric as a catalyst for transcendence begin? JS: In my photographs, the fabric is not just a material; it's a doorway to the ethereal. When the body is veiled, it transcends the earthly constraints, becoming a mystical entity suspended between the mundane and the divine. This transformation, this moment of transcendence, is what fascinates me. The fabric ushers the body into a sacred, ritualistic space, immortalizing it and severing its ties with the physical world. ML: Your description resonates with a profound sense of spirituality. How does your art challenge conventional notions of selfhood, gender, and narrative? JS: The veiled bodies in my photographs challenge preconceived notions. They shroud themselves in ambiguity and mystery, inviting viewers to contemplate the fragility of existence and the spatial boundaries that define us. In embracing the mystical, we challenge societal norms and gender roles, exploring the transformative power of self-discovery. Through my work, I encourage viewers to delve into their own nature, questioning the very essence of their existence. ML: Your creative journey has led you to create a sanctuary for fellow artists at Galería Subtitulo. How has this initiative influenced your perspective on art and community? JS: Galería Subtitulo was born out of the belief that art is not just an individual expression but a communal experience. During the pandemic, when artists struggled to create, it became a haven. Artists, like the talented Lorena Torres, found solace in their craft, preventing them from abandoning their passion. It reinforced my conviction in the transformative power of art, its ability to heal and bind communities together. ML: Your upcoming photobook sounds like a literary exploration of your artistic soul. What can readers expect to discover within its pages? JS: My photobook delves into the subversive dream worlds that shape my vision. It explores the search for identity through self-portraits, reflects on the passage of time, delves into the intimacy of the body, and examines fashion as a tool for simulation, theater, and ritual. Each series within the book represents a unique study of the body's theatricality, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the mysticism of existence. In the enigmatic world of Juan Sebastian, reality intertwines with dreams, and fabric becomes a bridge between the tangible and the transcendental. As we step into his universe, veiled bodies and cascading fabrics whisper tales of magical realism, inviting us to dance with the mystical. In every frame, there is an invitation – an invitation to challenge perceptions, embrace the unknown, and, above all, to transcend the ordinary and embark on a journey through the veil into a world of endless possibilities. Image by Gabriel Ponton Juan Sebastian’s latest collection, “With the Voices of Other Eternals,” will be unveiled at Scope Art Show during Miami Art Week from December 5-10, 2023, in partnership with Photo Basel. - The Art of Tattooing Comes to Miami – Sept. 29-Oct 1, 2023
For the first time in South Florida, the All-Stars Tattoo Convention will take place from September 29 thru October 1, 12 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition. The event will feature three days of incredible ink, world-renown tattoo artists, experience new and healed ink competitions, acrobatic arial shows and much more. There will even be opportunities to have tattoos created on-site, plus witness mind-blowing tattoo artistry. It’s a can’t miss event and an opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant world of tattoos and connect with fellow enthusiasts, while meeting famed experts. The All-Stars Tattoo Convention will feature more than 450 tattoo related exhibitors, nearly 900 of the world’s best tattoo artists from more than 60 countries, presented by renown tattoo artist and body modification expert Emilio Gonzalez. Notable tattoo artists include: Yomico Moreno, who has tattooed such celebrities at Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Juanes, Calle 13 and others; Stefano Alcantara who has tattooed such artists as Maluma, Robert Hernandez, the legendary Robert Pho, the Black Alien Project and Matt Gone, who held the record for most squares tattooed on his boy, just to name a few. Far from the taboos that linked tattoos to bad people, this body art and artistic expression is currently more than just a fashion, it is an increasingly widespread culture on all continents. The whole world is full of tattoos, which can be seen on many sports or music figures, and even on the models used in advertising campaigns of all kinds. Since ancient times, 7,000 years ago, pigments, ashes and natural dyes were already used to "varnish" faces, torsos and extremities of the human body, as well as faces pierced with pins, earrings or metal rings. Tattoos define social ranks, qualities of an individual or a community, life stages, ancestral rituals and even the very identity of a human being. The event presenter, Emilio Gonzalez, is internationally known for his tattoo artistry and expertise in body modifications. Gonzalez has been featured in National Geographic’s Taboo Latin America. He has produced tattoo conventions in other countries and has numerous tattoo shops and mobile supply vans across the U.S. His wife and two children are also dedicated to the art of tattoos and body modifications, making it a family business. “We are looking forward to having this massive tattoo convention. It will be an incredible experience, usually only found in Vegas and throughout Europe. Nestled within the Esplanade at Aventura, an exciting open-air retail, entertainment, and dining destination, The Amalfi Llama is poised to redefine the way South Florida experiences food, flavor, and fire. Drawing inspiration from a variety of cultures spanning from the countryside of Patagonia to the shores of the Mediterranean's Italian coast, The Amalfi Llama leverages the art of live-fire cooking. This masterful technique, cherished by diverse cultures worldwide, relies on smoke, coals, and embers to conjure up smoky perfection in every dish. "One of the earliest known innovations of humankind is harnessing the beauty of fire. It's a timeless art form that results in dishes that draw people in like smoke signals." Eduardo Gomez, CEO of Eureka! and Grupo Carolo, shares philosophy behind The Amalfi Llama's culinary approach, "The Amalfi Llama's spectacle of smoke in its live-fire cooking further flavors the food for an authentic farm-to-table approach unique to South Florida's culinary scene." EMBARK ON A CULINARY JOURNEY WITH AMALFI LLAMA The menu at The Amalfi Llama is a delicious tribute to coastal Italian cuisine. From tantalizing starters like Beef Carpaccio, with prime beef, and Parmigiano Reggiano, topped with arugula to comforting pasta dishes like Spicy Lobster Spaghetti, with a pomodoro lobster sauce and Baked Taglioni, with prosciutto cotto, there's a dish to satisfy any palate. Signature wood-fired pizzas, such as Alla Positano, with salami and pepperoncini drizzled with spicy honey, are sure to be crowd-pleasers. Meanwhile, Latin-inspired live-fire parrilla-style dishes include Tomahawk steak, Wagyu options, Grilled Chicken, with roasted mushrooms, and Branzino, prepared fire-grilled or sea-salted with lemon, capers, and olive oil. To complement the coastal menu, The Amalfi Llama's sommeliers have carefully curated an extensive selection of wines from Argentina, Italy, and the United States. Their variety of handcrafted cocktails, curated by Tyler Trevor, Vice President of Beverage Operations, elevates the dining experience even more. From unique Negroni variations to innovative creations like the Sunkissed Martini, infused with sun-dried tomatoes and white peppercorn, there's something for every spirit enthusiast. You won't want to miss the Specialty Cocktails menu, boasting gems like the Ube Puff and Purple Orchid, featuring eccentric ingredients like ube syrup and butterfly pea tea-infused tequila. For those seeking non-alcoholic options, Zero-Proof Cocktails and Refreshers are available, ensuring that there's truly an option for anyone and everyone. DESIGN AND DECOR From the moment you step inside The Amalfi Llama, you're greeted by warm, modern farmhouse interiors. Pale woods, antique mirrors, and neutral finishes create an inviting ambiance, complemented by organic design elements and bursts of native greenery. The pièce de résistance is the art crafted from Peruvian llama tassels, lending a unique touch to the decor. The heart of the restaurant is the expansive 9,595-square-foot space, featuring a 7,734-square-foot dining room adorned with 157 seats. The centerpiece of this space is a live-fire grill and wood-burning oven, inviting guests to savor the sights, sounds, and intoxicating aromas of wood-fired dishes crackling over hot embers. If you're looking for a more intimate area, two lively bars await. The front bar, with its snug and exclusive ambiance, boasts lounge seating for 11, while the central 30-seat bar offers panoramic views, seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor areas. Speaking of outdoor spaces, The Amalfi Llama doesn't disappoint. Two patios, totaling 1,861 square feet and 92 seats, allow guests to dine under the canopy of trees, their experience illuminated by the warm glow of fire pits and contemporary wood furniture. Complete with weatherized drop-down shades, these patios offer a cozy retreat for those who prefer the open air. ABOUT THE AMALFI LLAMA The Amalfi Llama reimagines the culinary landscape by seamlessly merging the allure of a rustic live-fire steakhouse with the flavors of Italian cuisine, affordably priced culinary haven where genuine cooking, down-to-earth cuisine and stylish flair intertwine. From the soothing cream decor to the intimate ambiance of crackling embers accompanied by the melodies of vintage Italian vinyls, guests at this spot embark on a journey from Southern Patagonia to the Mediterranean coast of Italy. Embracing the essence of a modern farmhouse, The Amalfi Llama revolves around an open parrilla grill and wood-burning oven, harnessing fire, smoke, coals and embers to craft dishes that pay homage to coastal cultures across Patagonia and Italy. The restaurant’s ethos also meets design with Latin American and Mediterranean influences, resulting in an inviting environment adorned with light woods, natural light and subtly elegant finishes, defying traditional steakhouse and Italian restaurant conventions.
