- Ten North Group Unveils “Required Reading,” a Banned Book Public Art Installation in Opa-Locka
On Saturday December 2nd, 2023, Ten North Group, formerly the Opa-locka Community Development Corporation, launched its annual Art of Transformation with the unveiling of Required Reading, a captivating, banned books activation showcasing book covers by Black writers. In the midst of debates, litigation, and legislation surrounding writings by Black individuals, Required Reading delves into the relationships among visual and literary arts in the Black experience. Required Reading will be showcased with vinyl canvas banners featuring book covers by Black writers which include QR codes to access banned books. Black Literature has had many challenges, with renewed assaults on its productions. As knowledge produced by African and African Diaspora intellectuals and artists is being debated, legislated, and litigated---reminding us of the dark Nazi period of banning and burning books---Required Reading calls for a return to memory lane where what is banned becomes required. This exhibition presents a plurality of works by African and African Diaspora writers and artists as a reflection of polyvocality and decentering of knowledge in a time of a legislative construction of ignorance and new cartographies of power and exclusion. “The Required Reading installation is not simply about celebrating literature, but also a collective challenge to the censorship and silencing of stories that ought to be shared. I am proud to join community leaders from across Miami-Dade County as we highlight the importance of intellectual freedom and contributions from those who have been marginalized for far too long. Together, we stand united against the erasure of the diverse voices and perspectives that make our communities that much stronger", stated Florida Senator Shevrin Jones. Required Reading is one of the five installations on view during the AOT’s, AFRICA GLOBAL, an 8 day, 2 block art event held during Miami Art Week 2023 and designed to illuminate African Diasporic communities' history and varied experiences. Through exhibitions, panel discussions, performances, walking tours and film projections, AOT explores contemporary issues in African and African Diaspora art by curating cultural exchange, encouraging artistic dialogue, celebrating diversity and fostering understanding the for richness of Black culture. Dr. Willie Logan, CEO, Ten North Group stated “Ten North Group Arts Foundation is thrilled to extend an invitation to all parents and families in South Florida to participate in Required Reading during the 2023 Art of Transformation, happening in conjunction with Miami Art Week. The installation will create landscapes of Black literature at the heart of our historic African American neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County. Our focus is to nurture the literary passions of the next generation through engaging discussions and public readings in the lush Garden of Humanity”. - Gucci Fall Winter 2023 Campaign
For Fall Winter 2023, the House presents a new campaign starring Vittoria Ceretti, Abubakar Konte, and Brando Erba, captured in Milan by photographer David Sims. The imagery and film are set against a distinctive green backdrop with an elevator, reminiscent of the set of the women’s FW23 fashion show in February. The new campaign showcases a series of signature silhouettes in ready-to-wear and accessories drawn from recent eras of the House and spotlights the latest archival reprisal – the Gucci Horsebit Chain bag. First introduced twenty years ago in Tom Ford’s Fall Winter 2003 collection, the new bag is defined by a maxi version of the iconic Horsebit, re-contextualizing the legacy hardware first conceived by Aldo Gucci in 1953 as a loafer embellishment. Updating the original with a double shoulder strap, the new Horsebit Chain bag debuts in padded leather, shearling, crystal, and contrast-leather variations. In the Fall Winter 2023 campaign, Vittoria Ceretti suggests new ways to wear the bag—carried by hand, on the shoulder, or as a clutch, highlighting how the design encompasses the beauty of a style so representative of a certain era and yet always contemporary. - Florida Wildflowers & Pollinators Get a Boost With Two Grants
The Daniels Lab at the Florida Museum of Natural History was recently awarded two grants to help support pollinators in Florida. The Florida Department of Transportation has set aside $155,002 for the team to plant and monitor thousands of milkweeds along roads in North Florida, and Duke Energy Florida will distribute $144,421 over three years to evaluate the establishment of pollinator habitat at its new solar site Alachua County. Pollinators are declining on a global scale, the collateral damage of continued habitat destruction and urbanization, among other stressors. But according to Jaret Daniels, a curator at the museum’s McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, humans already have many of the resources required to stave off further declines — we just need to make better use of them. “We have a lot of conservation land, but not enough to maintain pollinator populations and offset the losses from human impacts,” he said. “We need to look to environments that we, as humans, manage every day. That includes yards and neighborhoods, as well as the most visible landscapes that each of us encounter every day, such as roadsides, easements and other non-traditional spaces.” Wildflowers are the new roadside attraction There are an estimated 4 million miles of roadways that crisscross the U.S., fragmenting natural spaces and creating barriers that restrict the free movement of pollinators. This maze of asphalt is surrounded by 17 million acres of roadside, an amount of land equal to the size of Ireland. More and more states are sowing wildflower seeds along these embankments, transforming them from barriers into corridors for pollinators. Current roadside management practices, such as periodic mowing, can even be beneficial to plants that rely on pollinators with little to no fine-tuning. Such is the case for milkweeds that are adapted to dry areas prone to fire. “There’s anecdotal evidence that milkweed populations are decreasing broadly, but they’re often found outside of conservation land, primarily on roadsides and in pastures,” Daniels said. “Many of the upland species are surviving in these heavily managed areas because mowing and grazing are proxies for fire.” Florida is home to several native and unique species of milkweed, including this pinewoods milkweed (Asclepias humistrata), which inhabits dry upland areas in North Central Florida and the Panhandle. Florida Museum Photo By Jeff Gage FDOT is in the process of expanding its support of pollinators through enrollment in the Nationwide Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances for the Monarch Butterfly on Energy and Transportation Lands. The agreement targets practices that benefit the imperiled migratory monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). Through the grant, Daniels and his team will annually plant 3,000 juvenile milkweed plants along roadsides in North Florida for three years in an effort to enhance monarch breeding habitat. In a separate study, they’re testing out the use of remote sensing and AI to identify milkweed plants in the field. “It’s a lot of energy to do boots-on-the-ground surveys. We may be able to use images taken by drones to identify these plants and monitor the populations long term.” Solar farms are a model for mixed-use land management The expansion of solar farms across the U.S. is similarly creating an abundance of bright, open spaces that require regular upkeep. Unused areas near the solar arrays are increasingly being viewed as prime real estate for growing native flowering plants that support pollinators. Duke Energy Florida recently completed construction of a new solar site in High Springs, Florida, and approached Daniels to see if he’d be willing to conduct a feasibility study that would assess plant selection, establishment, survival, time to bloom, bloom abundance and overall cost. Duke Energy Florida recently opened a solar site in High Springs, Florida, which it hopes will double as a source of clean energy and a haven for native wildflowers and pollinators. Photo Courtesy Of Duke Energy For this project, Daniels will be planting a variety of native wildflower species. In determining which plants to test, he’ll use a combination of previous experience, cost-benefit analyses and a long list of potentially suitable species included in an upcoming solar toolkit published by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. From there, Daniels and his team will find themselves in a somewhat unexplored frontier. There’s no end to available resources that aid homeowners in growing an effective pollinator garden. However, very few studies, especially in the Southeast, have tested how best to establish larger-scale pollinator habitat in this type of landscape. According to Daniels, most of the information that does exist is anecdotal and not broadly applicable to a wide region. Even the most basic questions, like how many seeds to sow and in what proportions, are still open-ended. By project’s end, Daniels’ team will help generate more rigorous recommendations that can be broadly applicable to the southeast U.S. “Duke Energy wants something they can apply not just to this particular solar site, but to other sites throughout their Florida service territory,” Daniels said. “We can give them something backed by data on how they can do this better and more effectively, to benefit the pollinators and also maximize their impact.” Daniels and his colleagues have planted native wildflowers across the state to help rare, and often critically endangered, pollinator species.Florida Museum Photo By Kristen Grace “Duke Energy is excited to work with the Daniels lab at the Florida Museum of Natural History to discover best practices for successful pollinators at our solar facilities,” said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president. “Duke Energy is committed to environmental stewardship and ensuring we do everything we can to preserve and enhance pollinator habitats that are vitally important to our ecosystems and the health of our planet.” “This work will help us understand how to prepare our facilities to have a healthier and more thriving environment for the monarch butterfly and other declining species,” Seixas said. The two grants will help ensure that land used for energy and transportation in Florida is managed in a way that also benefits native biodiversity.Florida Museum Photo By Kristen Grace By ML Staff. The iconic pop phenomena, The B-52s, will be revealing an additional layer of hidden talents in an interspecies art project produced with a new and extended family of artistic friends for this year’s Miami Art Week taking place across the Magic City in December. New abstract exhibition by the legendary pop group and 16 artistic apes will debut during Miami Art Week, Dec. 6—10, and benefit Save The Chimps sanctuary in Fort Pierce, FL. The band has joined forces with the non-profit organization “Save The Chimps” to exhibit a collaborative art collection of paintings, co-produced by 16 of its most artistic primates from the Florida-based chimpanzee sanctuary, at this year’s Spectrum Miami art fair, taking place December 6—10 at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center. The unique acrylic-on-canvas exhibition by The B-52s and their ape collaborators will form a debut collection entitled “Wild Planet,” named after the band’s second album, and comprise of 52 paintings in various sizes, available for sale and ranging between $1000 and $5000 in price. Nearly half the collection has already been purchased by fans prior to the exhibit’s opening night on December 6. Band members Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider and Cindy Wilson collaborated with chimp artists from the 150-acre refuge to create a collection of paintings based on the vivid colors of the band’s most popular album covers. Kate and her fellow band members paint the base canvases in various background colors and select the color combinations for the chimps to finish each piece of art in their own style of brushstroke during their leisure time. Each piece in the new collection of works has been named after a B-52s song or lyric and is signed by the band for the five-day Spectrum Miami exhibit taking place at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center in Miami’s trendy Wynwood neighborhood. Private collectors and known supporters of Save The Chimps include edgy rock singer, Pink, together with Sir Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson. A limited-edition poster from the exhibit’s collection will also be available to purchase for $50 during the fair, and proceeds from the sales of all the artwork will benefit Save the Chimps, towards life-long care for chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, the pet trade and entertainment industry at one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world located in Fort Pierce, Florida. The B-52s have been performing packed-out shows for a debut 2023 residency at The Venetian in Las Vegas, that will continue into 2024 with additional dates due to the concerts proving so wildly popular with their decades-long generations of fans from the eighties, nineties and today. “I’m so glad that I visited Save the Chimps, I was blown away by all the social and artistic activities they offer to the residents,” says Kate Pierson, who toured the sanctuary last summer. “And boy can some of those chimps paint! I am honored to collaborate with the artists among them.” “We were introduced to Save The Chimps last year and unbeknown to us, we discovered a raw talent that now has a growing fan base of serious collectors,” says Linda Mariano, Marketing Managing Director for Redwood Art Group and Spectrum Miami. “We expect the debut collection at this year’s fair to draw an excellent attendance, judging by the pre-sales that continue to grow.” “We anticipate the exhibit at this year’s Spectrum Miami to be a huge success,” adds Save the Chips events director, Dan Mathews. “As our closest relatives in the animal world, chimps and human share many traits, including creative impulses.” Now in its 13th year, Spectrum Miami, a curated contemporary art fair held within 150,000 square feet of indoor exhibition space at Mana Wynwood Convention Center, takes place annually in December as part of the popular Miami Art Week. On the exterior of the building, OATS collaborated with local muralist Rage Johnson to pay homage to the area’s connection to the arts. "In conceptualizing Senior Planet, we wanted to create spaces that were inclusive, inviting, engaging, and dynamic. Each area can be utilized for multiple purposes, fostering both community and individuality. As the first senior center our firm designed in Miami, we aimed to craft a well-designed building that reflects the culture, emotions, and architecture of Miami. Through curved shapes, natural light, and colorful interiors, the Senior Planet in Wynwood makes people feel at ease and inspired," said Wid Chapman Architects Founder Wid Chapman. Registration is now open for classes starting in January. - 5 Essential Reasons to Prioritize Your Feet
Have you еvеr stopped to think about how much you put your fееt through еvеry day? The fееt arе thе unsung heroes of your body, supporting you through thick and thin. But, let's be real – they oftеn don't gеt thе carе thеy dеsеrvе. Yеars of hustlе, wеaring ill-fitting shoеs and somеtimеs just plain bad luck with gеnеtics can lead to serious foot issues. And guеss what? It's not just about thе pain; it's about your ovеrall wеll-bеing. Imaginе this: a day fillеd with running around, standing in linе and squееzing into thosе cutе but oh-so-tight hееls. Your feet arе scrеaming for a brеak! Nеglеcting your fееt isn't just uncomfortable; it can lеad to injuriеs and mеss with your balancе, making you morе accidеnt-pronе. Plus, crackеd and rough skin? That's an opеn invitation for troublе. So, let's give those hard-working fееt thе lоvе thеy dеsеrvе. Moreover, taking care of your feet will allow you to take aesthetic clicks of your feet and you can also post them at sellfeetpics.com and have some fun with those pictures. Let’s see some reasons to take care of your feet even more. 1. Enhance the Quality of Life When your feet aren't happy, it's not just about thе pain; it messes with еvеrything. Foot issues can mеss up how you stand, walk and even throw off your balancе. And guеss what tags along? Your knееs, hips and spinе, which might start acting up. Simply put, if your fееt arеn't in good shape, your wholе quality of life takes a hit. Now, think about how much you lеan on your fееt еvеry day – for work, fun and еvеn thosе funky classеs likе hip-hop. Studies say if you can't move around comfortably, it can mеss with your physical and mental health. So, lеt's not just walk all ovеr your fееt, all right? Thеy dеsеrvе some love, too. 2. Can Save You From Toenail-Related Conditions While it may not be the first thing on everyone's list of priorities, taking good care of your toenails is actually pretty important. If you skip the regular cleaning and trimming, it can cause some real issues, like ingrown toenails and nasty infections, such as toenail fungus. These aren't fun – they can bring on serious pain and make your feet all swollen. So, a little love for your toenails goes a long way in keeping you comfy and pain-free. 3. Helps You Keep Active Keeping active is a big part of staying healthy, whether it's hitting the gym, chilling in a yoga class, or just taking a stroll to work. The thing is, if you can't stand on your feet and keep moving, it opens the door to some serious health issues. This is extra crucial for people dealing with diabetes or arthritis. Their feet have extra-sensitive nerves and blood flow, which makes healing from injuries or infections a bit trickier. So, taking good care of your feet becomes a key player in the game of staying healthy, especially for those with some extra challenges. 4. Can Save Your From Serious Conditions Giving your feet some extra love can make a big difference in catching or preventing serious issues. When your feet hurt, it might be a sign of a bigger problem, so pay attention. Take heel pain, for example – a common gripe often linked to arch issues, known as plantar fasciitis. If that heel pain sticks around, don't hesitate to chat with your doctor. Also, watch out for fungal infections in your feet or toenails. They can lead to things like thickened toenails and not-so-pleasant odors. To keep things in check, steer clear of going barefoot and make sure your feet stay clean and dry. If foot pain is keeping you from strutting your stuff, it's time to give your doctor a heads-up. They can help you get back on your feet – literally. 5. Helps You Work Effectively Whether your job has you on your feet all day or parked at a desk, there's a good chance you have some commuting or movement in the mix. Even if you are stationed at a desk, it's important to stand up every now and then. It helps dodge those pesky pains, cramps and a bunch of other annoyances. So, whether you're on the move or anchored to your chair, a little break to stretch those legs can make a world of difference. Final Takeaway Here's the bottom line: taking care of your feet is a big deal. Whether you are hustling on your feet all day or doing the desk dance, your feet deserve some care. Don't ignore those twinges or pain signals – they might be trying to tell you something important. Keep an eye out for issues like heel pain or toenail bruises. By ML staff.
