- Brandon Delsid's Odyssey into Hollywood: Championing Diversity and Purpose
Stepping into the limelight with both talent and purpose, Brandon Delsid embodies the essence of diversity and passion in Hollywood. As a Latinx actor hailing from Fresno, California, Brandon's journey from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting NYC to the silver screen has been nothing short of inspiring. His upcoming role in Amazon Prime's 'This is Me…Now,' where he shares the screen with the iconic Jennifer Lopez, marks another milestone in his flourishing career. But Brandon is no stranger to the spotlight, having already left his mark on hit series like 'New Amsterdam' and 'The Date Whisperer.' Beyond his acting prowess, Brandon's versatility shines through as a pianist, singer, and fashion enthusiast, making waves both on and off the stage. Yet, it's his unwavering commitment to LGBTQIA+ rights and environmental activism that truly sets him apart. As he champions for genuine representation and safe spaces for queer individuals, Brandon's advocacy echoes through his every performance, resonating with authenticity and purpose. In this exclusive interview with Miami Living Magazine, Brandon shares insights into his craft, his passions, and the meaningful connections that drive his remarkable journey in the entertainment industry. Miami Living (ML): Brandon, your journey from Fresno to the bright lights of New York City and now the Hollywood hub of Los Angeles is truly impressive. How has your upbringing and diverse experiences influenced the roles you choose and the stories you're passionate about telling as an actor? Brandon Delsid: I feel so lucky at this moment for everything in my life. Grateful everything happened the way it did. I believe it had to all happen, the good, the bad and the wild. Leaving home wasn't easy. I felt something calling me forward though. You have to get in tune with that voice inside of yourself. Befriend it. I feel so lucky that I grew up in a town like Fresno, CA that had such a wealth of community theater. That was my training ground. It got me ready. It prepared me. I look for roles now that amplify LGBTQIA and diverse roles. Roles that will create visibility for my communities. Visibility is everything. If you can see it, you can be it. I'm over the moon excited to continue that mission and dream. ML: From navigating the medical drama of 'New Amsterdam' to the romantic comedy of 'The Date Whisperer,' and even the Off-Broadway premiere of 'The Big Bang Theory Musical,' your career has spanned a wide range of genres and platforms. Could you take us behind the scenes and share what excites you about diving into diverse projects and characters? Brandon: I think as an actor it all builds on itself. It's all connected, and I'm finally realizing that. I got to play queer characters in all three of those projects and I'm seeing in retrospect how they got me ready to play 'The Lover' in 'This is Me…Now'. I get excited by bringing characters to life and finding the truths and unique quirks each one has. I love stories where queer characters are just existing and thriving and for the most part all of these stories showcase that. However, in 'This is Me…Now' my character is much more fleshed out. I think you get a true beginning, middle and end with my journey with Jennifer. You see us help her, you see the drama, and then we ultimately get to a place of love with nothing but bright hopes for the future. It's a love letter in itself. ML: Your upcoming role in ‘This is Me…Now’ alongside Jennifer Lopez is incredibly exciting. Can you share with us a bit about your character and what it was like working on this project? Brandon: I have to say I think The Lover brings a lot of fabulousness and love to the film. Although I'm biased. I try to bring light and positivity wherever I go and definitely a bit of a sparkle. My mom says I used to throw glitter everywhere I'd go. Where did I get it from? I was so drawn in by the epic world Jennifer was aiming to create. We're talking Dune meets Moulin Rouge. She's always been a trendsetter but this one really is a redefining moment for cinema and musical movies as a whole. I get to play Jennifer's gay best friend and be a part of her Greek chorus in a way. I try to guide her down the right path and away from heartbreak. Working with Jennifer was a dream. I'll never forget how kind she was to me. She created a really playful space to improvise during scenes. She has such a special and sweet way about her that is so uniquely and fabulously her. She's everything you'd hope she'd be. Kind, attentive, hardworking, and glamorous. But above all, her passion and playfulness are top. ML: As an actor who identifies proudly as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, you've spoken about the importance of authentic representation in film and television. Can you share a specific instance where you felt particularly empowered by a character's portrayal or storyline related to the LGBTQIA+ community, and how it resonated with you personally? Brandon: It's why I do what I do. I always think about growing up as a young boy in Fresno, CA and how much it meant to me when I'd see gay characters on screen. It made me feel seen. It made me smile. It made me feel included. It might be why I am where I am today. I was so inspired by them. I think a lot about Ugly Betty and how I'd watch it secretly under the covers. I loved the queer characters in it just simply existing. I'd never seen that before then. There are so many pioneers who came before me who kicked open the door for me to be able to play JLo's gay best friend in 2024. I want to consciously choose work that moves the needle forward for my community. The industry wants to put us all in boxes, but I say burn the boxes, rip them up. Create your own narrative. ML: If you could play any role, regardless of gender or genre, what would it be and why does it resonate with you? Brandon: I've always been inspired by women. Powerful and glamorous women. Cue Jennifer Lopez. I think of Jessica Lange in the first season of American Horror Story. What an incredible actress and what a role. She's so present and powerful. I'd love to play a role like that. She's sort of a wild Hollywood character that is part glamour and part urban legend. You don't know where the fantasy ends and she begins. Sort of an eccentric larger than life character with a twinkle in her eye and a dash of glam. Timeless and always in style. Born timeless. ML: We've heard about your dedication to environmental causes, particularly those related to global warming. Could you tell us more about why this cause is important to you and any initiatives you're involved with? Brandon: I try to be as involved as I can be with local charities and initiatives for both LGBTQIA rights and Environmental Causes. I think people tend to turn a blind eye to things that they believe don't have to do with them. We have to be active in life. If you're not active, what are you doing? I believe we have one planet and we need to treat her and her inhabitants with respect and softness. I truly believe the most powerful thing we can do is vote. Vote for people who support your interests. Vote, vote, vote. Vote for people who support our planet's welfare and LGBQTIA rights. It's a superpower and a privilege to be able to vote for the things that matter to you. Don't throw it away. We're coming up on a big election and it's arguably more important than ever. ML: When you're not busy with work or activism, how do you like to unwind and recharge? Brandon: It's something I'm still learning. It should be easier though. I heard something recently about how life is about becoming an expert on yourself. Learning your likes and dislikes. I know I like an old "I Love Lucy" episode. I know I like a bubble bath. I know I like ranch dressing. You get the idea. Find your happy triggers. Those are all things I can do to immediately boost my mood. What brings you joy? I try to exercise daily even legitimately if it's just 7 minutes. It counts. I try to celebrate all the little wins. Besides that, I'm a big advocate for rest and alone time. My partner Grant and I will schedule in our alone time and give each other space. Find time to recharge and do nothing. Binge your favorite TV show. Work Hard, Rest Hard. ML: Finally, with "This is Me…Now" premiering this month, fans have been eagerly anticipating its release. How do you personally connect with the themes of self-discovery and healing portrayed in the film, and what message do you hope viewers take away after watching your performance? Brandon: It's a never-ending journey. You don't reach an end spot. I'm always working on getting to know myself more every day. I hope people leave falling in love with themselves. Loving others and loving your partner is amazing, but I hope people leave this loving themselves more than ever. Radical self-love for yourself. You will be with yourself through your whole life. Make it a good, solid relationship. I think JLo's journey in this film all centers back to that, truly loving yourself through the whole wild ride of life. You deserve it. Compassionate care involves meeting those with dementia where they are, accepting them without judgment, and providing assistance and reassurance with empathy and understanding. By approaching caregiving with compassion, caregivers, such as those specially trained at Scottsdale memory care facilities, can create a supportive and nurturing environment that promotes dignity, autonomy, and quality of life for people living with dementia. Ways to Foster Compassion in Dementia Care Practice Empathy: Put yourself in the shoes of the person with dementia, and seek to understand their perspective, emotions, and experiences. Empathy allows caregivers to connect with them on a deeper level, fostering trust and rapport. Validate Feelings: Acknowledge the emotions and feelings expressed by individuals with dementia, even if they may seem irrational or confusing. Validating someone's feelings helps them feel heard, respected, and understood, reducing feelings of frustration and distress. Communicate with Patience and Understanding: Communicate with people with dementia in a calm, patient, and reassuring manner, using simple language and nonverbal cues to facilitate understanding. Avoid correcting or arguing with them, as this can lead to feelings of frustration and agitation. Promote Meaningful Engagement: Engage people with dementia in activities and conversations that bring them joy, purpose, and fulfillment. Whether it's reminiscing about past experiences, listening to music, or participating in creative arts therapies, meaningful engagement can enhance overall well-being and quality of life. - Ashley Versher on Rising Through Film and TV: A Miami Living Exclusive
Miami Living had the pleasure of chatting with the versatile Ashley Versher: actress, filmmaker and writer on the rise. With her upcoming role alongside Jennifer Lopez in her highly anticipated autobiographical film ‘This is Me…Now’, Ashley's star is shining brighter than ever. She has already graced the screens in hit TV shows like 'American Auto' and 'Law & Order SVU’, as well as taken charge behind the camera as a writer, director, and producer. Her self-written and directed short film, 'Brief Exchanges,' swept through the 2023 film festival circuit, earning critical acclaim and multiple awards. Born in San Francisco and currently residing in Los Angeles, Ashley's passion for storytelling transcends boundaries, whether on stage, screen, or through her advocacy for young filmmakers of color. We're thrilled to dive into Ashley's creative journey and catch a glimpse of what her life in the spotlight entails. Miami Living (ML): So great to get to speak with you Ashley! Thank you for being here today. First off, major congrats on your upcoming role in ‘This is Me…Now’ alongside Jennifer Lopez! Can you share with us how you prepared for your character and what it was like working with such an iconic figure in the industry? Ashley Versher: Thank you so much! I always start with the script. Always. I read it as many times as possible or as I feel necessary - which is usually plentiful. In the film, ‘This is Me…Now’ I play The Idealist. She has a very positive and hopeful perspective on life and especially on love. She is a romantic who believes in what would, should, or could be and is not limited by what is. I took that and ran with it! Working with Jennifer was an absolute dream. I never imagined sharing the screen with such an incredible artist. I have admired her work for years. She is just so incredibly talented and her work ethic is everything! ML: From appearing in hit TV shows like "American Auto" and “Law and Order SVU” to writing and directing your own award-winning short film "Brief Exchanges," you've showcased incredible versatility. Could you share a recent moment or experience that made you reflect on the journey you've taken in your career and appreciate the progress you've made? Ashley: I am a big proponent of practicing gratitude. So I don't know if I could say that there has been one particular moment or one experience, because they all mean so much to me. I do know that every time I get an audition, book a job, and every time I'm on set it feels so surreal. As actors, we work so hard for a dream and to achieve a goal that seems impossible to most people. Because that's the frame that we are working, I just really try to be in the moment and in doing so I appreciate each step of the journey. ML: Your short film "Brief Exchanges" received critical acclaim and won several awards. Could you tell us a little about its storyline and what inspired you to create this film? Ashley: Brief Exchanges is about a young black woman living in New York City navigating intersectionality and filtered through the lens of a budding romance. New York is the story’s backdrop and is such an interesting city. It is the kind of place where you can meet somebody and end up spending the entire day with them. I think that’s very special and what brings the story to life. I was inspired to make this film during 2020 after the killing of George Floyd and the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. There was so much conversation on social media, and I think for me, this was one of those moments where we all really utilized social media as a form of protest, because we were in the middle of a pandemic. During this time there was a lot of conversation about microaggressions and that really sparked something in me - probably because I’ve lived a life experiencing them on almost a daily basis. The tricky thing about microaggressions is that they are invisible to a lot of people, so I really wanted to paint a picture of what they look like and hopefully give people the opportunity to see what it feels like to experience them. ML: We've learned about your involvement with the non-profit organization 'Made In Her Image', supporting young women and non-binary youth of color in film and media. What led you to work with this organization, and what advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers from marginalized communities? Ashley: In the beginning of 2021 I was really inspired by a friend of mine to take up space in the nonprofit world, and when I say 'take a space' I really mean to do my part. I was doing some research for my film Brief Exchanges and I came across a zoom panel called Through Her Lens, with incredible women cinematographers - Mia Cioffi Henry, Kira Kelly and others, which was hosted by Panavision and 'Made In Her Image'. So of course I did a deep dive into all things 'Made In Her Image' and found it to be a fantastic organization that I really wanted to support. I joined as a volunteer and over a series of months I took on varying roles in the organization. Everyone knows that getting into the entertainment industry is incredibly challenging - let alone trying to build a very successful career. This organization's mission is to empower young women, girls, and non-binary youth of color to carve out their path in this industry, and to tell their stories is crucial. May be a little daunting to hear because I think it's the advice that you always hear but I think it's great advice, and that would be to pick up your phone, pick up a camera, pick up anything that you can use to record with and just start filming. Certainly anything from your family at Thanksgiving, a birthday party, to a night out on the town with your friends you can shoot and edit to tell a compelling story. Sure you can apply to grad school and you know hopefully you get in but it's also very expensive. If you want to be a filmmaker you have to just do it. Call yourself a filmmaker until you believe it but never stop doing it because that's the only way you're gonna learn. ML: Outside of your professional endeavors, you're quite active with hobbies like cooking, yoga, and basketball. How do you balance your busy career with self-care, and do any of these activities influence your creative process? Ashley: Probably my favorite thing to do and my main act of self care is traveling. My favorite city is Paris (second to New York). Obviously I can’t travel all the time, though I would if I could - so when I’m home I like to workout, watch movies and try new restaurants around town. I absolutely love food, just not more than I love to travel. Oh and skincare - my skincare routine is clutch. ML: Living in Los Angeles, how do you find inspiration in your everyday life? And how do you unwind after a long day of filming or writing? Ashley: I think I'm most inspired by the children in my life. I have nieces, nephews and godchildren, many of whom want to be in the film industry in some way shape or form. Children are the heart of the world, inspiring in their vulnerability, their empathy, their reactive disposition, their unabashed joy - it’s all so beautiful. The way I unwind at the end of a long day changes, but for right now I like to have a hot cup of tea, a few biscuits, and when I say biscuit, I mean British biscuits, so cookies in American – and watch Downton Abbey. You can tell I was always meant to be an actor. Can you hear the drama required for me to unwind? It’s hilarious. ML: What are some of your aspirations or goals for the future, whether it's in acting, filmmaking, writing, or other areas of creative expression? Ashley: I am ready to make my next film. It's something I'm really excited about and the story is something I am very passionate about. Additionally, while I do have further goals and aspirations, right now I want to enjoy this moment and take it all in. I also of course want to celebrate! I think it’s important to look back on your past and all the hard work you've done and let that guide you into the future. Social Media: Instagram / IMDB www.ashleyversher.com By ML Staff. - Millennia of Chinese Legends, Brought to Life through Dance
A daughter disguises herself as a son and takes her father’s place at war. A magical monkey, an ogre, and a humanoid pig protect a Buddhist monk as he journeys to the western heavens on a quest for true teachings. A folk hero gets drunk, but then saves a village from a vicious tiger. And the Lord Buddha asks the deities in heaven to come down to China and walk among the people, creating a civilization that would last 5,000 years. Shen Yun Performing Arts will return to Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 21-25. www.ShenYun.com/SFL. For other cities and US tour schedule: ShenYun.com If you were to break Chinese culture into its building blocks, you would find that it is made up of stories such as these. Some are beautiful fairy tales that draw from China’s vast spiritual culture. Others are moral parables interwoven with history itself. From the time the goddess Nü Wa created the Chinese people from spirit and clay, they have been singing of the exploits of heaven, earth, and humankind. According to one legend, the four-eyed Cang Jie discovered words hidden in the patterns of a tortoise shell, inventing the first Chinese script. From this beginning, a rich catalogue of writings was born, ranging from timeless poetry to dynastic records to Taoist parables and classic novels. To unlock the treasures of Chinese civilization, understanding the language is key; which, of course, can present something of a challenge for most of the world. Fortunately, though, there is one language that anyone can understand, although it is entirely unspoken—the language of classical Chinese dance. Much like China’s written language, classical Chinese dance was developed and refined over thousands of years. With a vast and independent system of movements, postures, and gestures, it has deep roots in traditional Chinese ideas about beauty and grace. It is also physically demanding, incorporating dramatic flips and tumbling techniques that share a common ancestry with martial arts. One final element is essential to classical Chinese dance—yun, which roughly translates as the spirit of the dance itself. Yun embodies the expressiveness of the dancer, the feeling he or she conveys through every movement and facial gesture. Many artists consider yun to be the most important dimension of Chinese dance because, ultimately, the dance is a form of communication. Within the vast system of classical Chinese dance, any character can be portrayed: deity or villain, victorious general or shy maiden. This ability to bring such characters to life makes classical Chinese dance the perfect medium for telling stories. But where can you find classical Chinese dance? At dance schools in Beijing or Shanghai? Perhaps in decades past, but today you need not venture so far afield. Classical Chinese dance is experiencing a global revival, and its new home is in New York. So if you wish to experience the saga of the Chinese people in all its glory, here is some good news. Shen Yun is coming soon to a performance hall near you. With a name that roughly translates as “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” the New York-based classical Chinese dance and music company Shen Yun Performing Arts inevitably holds itself to a high standard. Bringing together dedicated artists from around the world, Shen Yun’s mission is to spur a renaissance of traditional Chinese civilization. The company exclusively showcases three types of dance: classical Chinese dance in the main, as well as a few Chinese ethnic and folk dances, revitalizing the traditions of the Middle Kingdom’s many peoples. And every season, many of Shen Yun’s classical dances are dedicated to telling stories. In past years, audiences watched in awe as the chariot of the Lord Buddha descended from the skies. They met the ancient heroine Mulan on the battlefield, and journeyed with the Tang Monk and his disciples—Friar Sand, Pigsy, and the marvelous Monkey King—to the western heavens. They watched Wu Song drink far too much wine for anyone about to go toe-to-toe with a man-eating tiger, and they saw the poet Li Bai receive a visit from the fairies of the Moon Palace, if only in his dreams. Shen Yun’s story-based dances form a thread that links past and present, transporting audiences to bygone dynasties and far-off places. The chronicle of the Chinese people is long and still unfolding. Through classical Chinese dance, it is a story the entire world can witness. This triumph holds immense significance for me, not only for my confidence but also for my overall game," he expressed. Ranked as Brazil's top player in the ATP standings, Wild is poised to square off against Spaniard Jaume Munar in the second round. Munar caused an upset by defeating the tournament's 8th seed, Austrian Sebastian Ofner, with a scoreline of 6/3 and 6/1. While Munar holds a favorable head-to-head record against Wild, winning all three prior encounters, the Brazilian remains undeterred, emphasizing that past statistics hold no sway once they step onto the court. "Every match is a new challenge. Just like with Tabilo, I had previously suffered defeats, but that's inconsequential. There's always a first time, and I'm hopeful it will be here in Rio. This tournament holds a special place in my heart, and I'm committed to taking it one game at a time, staying focused, and progressing with each passing day," he concluded. By ML Staff. - MOCA North Miami Presents Alexandra Fields O'Neale: Bound//Unbound
The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA), is thrilled to showcase the captivating work of local artist Alexandra Fields O'Neale as she unveils a large-scale art installation, Bound//Unbound, during the museum’s second iteration of Welcome To Paradise. The opening of the installation will be celebrated during a public reception on February 23. Generously funded by the Knight Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Welcome To Paradise has been offering free public access to dynamic spaces within the museum since the program’s inception in 2023. Commissioning South Florida artists to adorn MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard with creativity and experimentation, the series also provides a stage for socially-engaged workshops, thought-provoking art talks, captivating performances, and immersive participatory art experiences. In the newest season of Welcome To Paradise, curated by MOCA’s Adeze Wilford, artists are tasked with uncovering overlooked facets of Miami’s diverse history. Among them, O’Neale stands out for her profound exploration of Black identity and historical narratives across various mediums—sound, video, performance, and large-scale sculptural works. Through her immersive, sound art installation, O’Neale transports MOCA’s audiences in a vivid portrayal of the journey of transatlantic enslavement and the quest for freedom via the saltwater railroads to the Bahamas, challenging the viewer’s understanding of the city's past as a beacon of freedom amidst the shadows of the transatlantic slave trade while remaining deeply rooted in local history. Drawing in visitors to traverse two square metal enclosures enveloped in mixed media, such as blue netting and thin rope, in-and-outside the enclosures, the outdoor installation will be an immersive experience akin to walking through a saltwater railroad. An audio component will mirror the sounds of the ocean, allowing guests to engage with and reflect upon the narrative presented in the piece. The installation invites visitors to navigate between two metal structures symbolizing the paths to enslavement and freedom. Within each enclosure, they encounter immersive atmospheric and sonic transformations. Anchoring this spatial journey is a site-specific soundscape where the ocean becomes a narrator, serving as a historical conduit carrying the poignant narratives and lost lives of enslaved individuals at sea. “As a native Miamian, I was unaware of our city’s connection to this monumental aspect of history and I wanted to delve into these narratives in a tangible way that people could interact with and learn from. Much of that ambition is manifested in the sonic and interactive aspects of this piece,” said Alexandra Fields O’Neale. “At its core, the piece is about resurrecting a silenced history that risks fading away. My goal is to inspire viewers to look beyond textbook or mainstream narratives and continue to explore the layers of history hidden in every corner of our city.” “In an area that is rapidly shifting and changing both by demographics and by memory of shared spaces, Alexandra’s practice assumes heightened significance, and we’re most excited to platform her artistry in this year’s Welcome To Paradise program,” adds Adeze Wilford, MOCA curator. “My hope is that the work sparks people's desire to understand and engage with history, even when it is painful and dark. For an emotionally-charged subject matter, Alexandra has created work that is at once very abstract and also a literal and physical manifestation of the past. The result is an experience rooted in hopefulness.” During the opening reception on February 23, MOCA members and guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist and indulge in specialty drinks prepared by museum partners, Rhum Barbancourt and Tripping Animals. For more details on the reception, please visit MOCA’s website. Additional programming will take place on March 29 from 6-8pm in conjunction with Bound//Unbound, featuring an evening of mindful movement and sound, activating O’Neale’s installation. Envisioning the ocean as a narrator, retelling the city's history and honoring its ancestors, this embodied activation will include gentle yoga led by Kiyona Miah and Jasmine Mastin of The Black Yogis from South Florida. Visitors will then be invited to participate in an immersive sound bath experience guided by certified hypnosis practitioner and sound artist Kristen Soller. O’Neale’s installation will remain on view until June 2. Following that, on June 12, artist Germane Barnes will unveil his installation Shotgun House. Barnes' installation challenges the tendency to overlook historical narratives through a creative reinterpretation of the vernacular architecture of a shotgun house. Transforming the architectural style into a dynamic sculpture with interactive components, the installation aims to bring attention to the vibrant histories of the historic Overtown neighborhood, where these houses once stood. The featured works in this year’s Welcome To Paradise series epitomize the significant, yet often marginalized, histories rooted both locally in Miami and across the nation. By engaging these two artists and their practices, MOCA seeks to reckon with the complex cultural landscape of South Florida, acknowledging and celebrating the diverse stories and lived experiences within its community, while offering an opportunity for reflection. In conjunction with these installations, MOCA will also host public and educational programming taking place throughout the duration of the season. For more information on Welcome to Paradise and upcoming programming, please visit the museum’s website. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of MOCA North Miami
