  • Habibi Miami Brings French Moroccan Magic to the Miami River

Habibi Miami, a lush French Moroccan supper club, will debut on a waterfront spot on the Miami River in late summer. Hospitality big Roman Jones tapped Ikam Rebaia to lead the project, with Aris Nanos overseeing operations. They have come together to create a destination that evokes a royal escape to the French Moroccan Riviera while drawing on vibrant bites, cocktails, and an enchanting nighttime scene. With nods to Moorish architecture, the design of Habibi Miami will be a captivating immersion into the aesthetics and vibrant culture of the Maghreb. Creative Director Mark Lehmkuhl of Ghosthouse Design Group worked with Love Lake Studios to create the Wes Anderson-inspired retro decor featuring a palette of pink and teal to conjure a Beatles-era Tangier fever dream. Inhabiting a tent-like structure inspired by luxurious riads, Habibi Miami welcomes guests on a captivating visual journey, echoing the fiery atmosphere and unique traditions of French Morocco. Alhambra design elements on the outside and a 30-foot-long red carpet entrance set the tone for the opulent atmosphere inside, with a dining room outfitted with crystal chandeliers, Turkish rugs, velvet booths, and silk draperies. The restaurant has a capacity of 200 and will include an outdoor patio with plans for sunset parties as well as a bar adorned with hookahs that will also feature one-of-a-kind tableside hookah service with customized infusions and flavors. Nightly shows of roving belly dancers, contortionists, and percussionists who will circle the dining room will enhance the nightlife-as-theater experience. The menu encompasses a variety of tasty continental and Middle Eastern shareable dishes appealing to a broad range of palates, with highlights like Merguez Pigs in a Blanket, Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Charred Wild Mushrooms, Lemon Roasted Chicken and Herbed Yogurt, plus comfort food like Wagyu Burger Sliders, Miso-Honey Glazed Sea Bass Skewers, and a selection of sushi, complemented by sips and tea service. Tableside dessert carts will include ice cream with Turkish mastic and Halva cheesecake. The bar program at Habibi Miami draws on the North African and Mediterranean lifestyle, showcasing unique ingredients and flavors that induce a strong sense of place. In executing this motif, the beverage team employs techniques like fat washing – the process of toasting seeds to pull out their oils and infusing them in spirits overnight – to achieve rich textures and bold aromas. This is exemplified by the "Ali" Fashioned, made with Peanut Butter Washed Angel's Envy Bourbon, Giffard's Banana & Honey, and Angostura Bitters with Orange Aromatics. Drinks like the Moroccan Margarita made with Patron Blanco, Patron Reposado, Cointreau, Harissa Infused Pineapple Reduction, Lime Juice, and Roasted Couscous Salted Rim will perfectly complement the flavors of the menu. Habibi Miami is due to open in the Summer of 2024. Habibi Miami is located at 452 Northwest North River Drive, Miami, FL. By ML Staff.  Image by Habibi Miami

Miami Music Project is pleased to announce that it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a Grants for Arts Projects award of $50,000. Every year, Miami Music Project has the opportunity to train hundreds of young musicians, who receive nearly 400 hours each of immersive and transformative music education through its free Signature Programs. This grant will support Miami Music Project's programming, ensuring all students flourish musically and academically. This grant is part of an NEA initiative to award 1,135 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling more than $37 million as part of its second round of fiscal year 2024 grants. In the words of President Anna Klimala: “Upon celebrating National Teacher Appreciation Week, we continue to find reasons to acknowledge and appreciate our Teaching Artists, who serve as critical educators and mentors to the children of Miami Music Project. Our educators combine world-class musicianship with social responsibility and sensitivity, making them key allies and advocates of every child’s potential. The continued support of the National Endowment for the Arts reminds us that our social impact remains meaningful nationally”. Miami Music Project has become one of the most successful El Sistema-Inspired programs in North America. Through a combination of Social Emotional Learning curriculum, academic tutoring, and mentoring, Miami Music Project has created opportunities for deep arts learning experiences for hundreds of young learners. In this task, 63 Teaching Artists work throughout the program sites five days a week. Since 2013, the National Endowment for the Arts has been a crucial partner in advancing the Miami Music Project's mission of fostering social progress through music education. Grounded in the belief that nurturing our youth is foundational to cultivating a thriving society, the program steadfastly asserts that investing in children creates impactful steps toward building a sustainably prosperous society. Through music education, Miami Music Project champions enhancing children's social-emotional well-being, behavioral development, and academic motivation, instilling a sense of accomplishment that fosters pride within the communities it serves. “Projects like Miami Music Project exemplify the creativity and care with which communities are telling their stories, creating connection, and responding to challenges and opportunities in their communities—all through the arts,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “So many aspects of our communities, such as cultural vitality, health and wellbeing, infrastructure, and the economy, are advanced and improved through investments in art and design, and the National Endowment for the Arts is committed to ensuring people across the country benefit.” Miami Music Project students receive music education and mentorship opportunities from their Teaching Artists. These world-class musicians often perform alongside our students on professional stages, such as the Wertheim Center for Performing Arts at Florida International University, the University of Miami, the Miami Springs Farmers Market, the North Miami Beach Bandshell, and other locations around Miami. About the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), established in Congress in 1965, is an independent federal agency that is the largest funder of the arts and arts education in communities nationwide and a catalyst of public and private support for the arts. By advancing equitable arts participation and practice opportunities, the NEA fosters and sustains an environment where the arts benefit everyone in the United States. The NEA’s primary activities include grantmaking to nonprofit arts organizations, public arts agencies and organizations, colleges and universities, federally recognized tribal communities or tribes, and individual writers and translators. Grant applications are reviewed by panels of arts experts and individuals from across the country. While the NEA’s primary activity includes grantmaking, it is also a national leader and a convener on issues important to the arts community and people working at the intersections of the arts and other fields, such as health, community development, and education. The NEA is an important resource for research on the value and importance of the arts and shares that information with stakeholders and the public. The NEA's new Strategic Plan and Equity Action Plan for fiscal years 2022 - 2026 provide a blueprint for the agency to position itself as the lead agency within the federal government for social and economic change through the arts and to build on current processes already in place and implement new strategies to ensure the advancement of fairness and equity. Together, the Arts Endowment's activities support bringing meaningful arts experiences to all Americans, helping to ensure that everyone in the country has the opportunity to live artful lives. • 5 Key Health Checks For Your New Puppy

Welcoming a puppy into your home brings much joy with all the tail wagging and cuddles it entails. However, it also means taking on responsibility, especially when it comes to ensuring the health and happiness of your companion. Making sure your new puppy receives early health check-ups is key to setting them up for a healthy life. Let's dive into what you should know about the health assessments for your four-legged family member. Image by Tanya / Adobestock First Veterinary Appointment One of the first things you should do after bringing a puppy home is schedule a visit to the vet. This initial check-up goes beyond capturing moments with your new pet; it's an in-depth assessment that lays the groundwork for their future well-being. During this visit, your veterinarian will conduct an exam to detect any potential illnesses or genetic abnormalities. They will go over vaccination schedules, deworming procedures, and other preventive care measures with you. Feel free to ask any questions you may have—your vet is there to guide you in understanding your pet's health requirements. Additionally, the vet will assess your puppy's weight, examine their heart and lungs, and inspect their eyes, ears, and coat for any issues. Now is the time to talk about the health issues related to your puppy's breed. It's also a chance to get your puppy microchipped for added safety in case they wander off. Your vet might also want to check for parasites by taking a stool sample as these are common in dogs. This visit is important for building a relationship with your vet, which is key for managing your puppy's health in the long run. Having a connection with your vet means you'll feel at ease reaching out with any concerns as your puppy grows. Image by mtrlin / Adobestock Regarding Vaccinations Why are vaccinations so crucial for your friend? Vaccines help protect against diseases, some of which can be life-threatening. During the vet visit, your puppy will begin their vaccination series. Core vaccines usually cover protection against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, and rabies. Your vet will give you a schedule detailing when these vaccines should be given and when to come back for booster shots. Following this schedule is vital for ensuring your puppy stays healthy in the long term. Depending on where you live and your lifestyle with your pet, your vet might suggest other vaccines, like those for Lyme disease or Bordetella (kennel cough). Vaccinations are timed carefully to provide immunity without overwhelming your puppy's developing system. Discuss with your veterinarian the risks associated with vaccinations and how to strike a balance considering your puppy's exposure levels. Certain vaccines are administered in a series to gradually strengthen your puppy's system. Make sure to maintain a record of all vaccinations given and set up reminders for future doses. Skipping a vaccine booster could jeopardize the vaccination process, leaving your puppy vulnerable to illnesses. Image by Africa Studio / Adobestock Controlling Parasites Puppies are especially vulnerable to parasites, which can pose health risks if not addressed promptly. Common offenders include fleas, ticks, and heartworms. During your puppy's vet visits, they will screen for these parasites and recommend suitable preventive measures. Regular preventive treatments are essential in keeping these pests at bay. Remember, being proactive in parasite control is key! Preventing heartworms is crucial since this disease can be fatal and its treatment is both expensive and intricate. Ticks have the potential to transmit diseases such as Lyme disease; hence, employing a tick prevention plan is vital, particularly if you reside in or frequent wooded areas. Flea infestations can result in itching, allergies, and in severe cases, anemia. Numerous products available provide protection against fleas, ticks, and heartworms, simplifying care management. Before giving your puppy any medication, it's important to consult with your veterinarian since puppies can react differently compared to adult dogs. It’s a good idea to check your puppy's fur for fleas and ticks, particularly after outdoor activities like walks or playtime. Keeping both your home and your pet's living space clean is vital in preventing the spread of parasites. Image by puhimec / Adobestock Assessing Nutrition Proper nutrition is crucial for a puppy. Different breeds have varying requirements depending on their size, activity levels, and health conditions. For instance, if you're looking for golden retriever puppies for sale nearby, it's smart to inquire about the nutritional needs of the breed from breeders. Golden Retrievers and other large breeds benefit from diets that promote joint health and proper development. Your vet can offer advice on feeding schedules, portion sizes, and selecting the right food based on your puppy’s age and breed to ensure they grow up robust and well-nourished. Puppy food should be packed with nutrients and formulated to support rapid growth and development. Opt for brands that prioritize meat as the main ingredient without unnecessary fillers such as corn or wheat. Puppies need higher levels of protein, and fats, along with vitamins and minerals, in different proportions compared to adult dogs. Let's talk about the option of giving your puppy supplements if your veterinarian suggests it for larger breeds that are prone to joint problems. It's crucial to conduct feeding trials and adjust the diet as your puppy grows since their nutritional needs will change as they get older. It's best to avoid feeding human food to your puppy as it could be harmful. Developing good eating habits early on can help prevent obesity and related health issues in the future. Image by tan4ikk / Adobestock Information on Spaying and Neutering Have you thought about the advantages of spaying or neutering your puppy? These procedures not only help manage the pet population but also come with health benefits, such as reducing the risk of certain cancers and diseases. Additionally, they can improve behavior by reducing aggression and the tendency to roam. Your vet can recommend the best age for these surgeries based on your puppy's requirements and breed standards. Spaying or neutering can also prevent unwanted litters and lower the chances of uterine, ovarian, or testicular cancers in your pet. Many veterinarians suggest spaying dogs before their first heat cycle as it significantly decreases the risk of breast cancer. Neutering male dogs can help prevent prostate issues and certain aggressive behaviors. These procedures are generally safe, with a brief recovery time when given proper care. Talk to your veterinarian about managing your puppy's pain to make sure they feel comfortable as they recover. It's an opportunity to chat about how these procedures might affect your pet's health in the long run, including their metabolism and activity levels. Remember, deciding to spay or neuter your pet isn't just a choice but a responsible aspect of being a pet owner. Image by Ivan Kmit / Adobestock In conclusion, keeping up with check-ups and health screenings is crucial for ensuring that your puppy grows up to be a healthy adult dog. These initial steps not only help detect any health issues early on but also set the stage for future care. By showing love, care, and attention to your puppy's well-being, you can pave the way for a happy life. Raising a puppy comes with both joyful moments and challenges – embrace the journey, stay informed, and give your furry family member the best possible care. Remember that each visit to the vet, every meal you prepare, and all preventive measures you take contribute towards building a foundation for lasting health and happiness. By ML Staff. • Protect Your Boat for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Sea Tow® – the nation’s leading on-water marine assistance provider – urges boaters to prepare for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season which started on June 1 and runs until Nov. 30. While the usual peak in activity occurs in Aug. and Sept., storms have formed ahead of that official start date in the last decade and 2024 is no exception. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which spans from June 1 to November 30, predicts an 85% chance of an above-normal season, a 10% chance of a near-normal season and a 5% chance of a below-normal season. NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Forecasters have a 70% confidence in these ranges. “From experience, we know that just one storm can cause devastation and uproot lives,” said Sea Tow CEO, Joseph Frohnhoefer III. “The time to prepare is now. We encourage all boaters to be prepared and understand the steps that need to be taken if a storm were to make landfall in their area to protect themselves and their boat. Sea Tow’s team of knowledgeable and experienced captains are available to help.” The following is a list of boating tips to consider before, during and after a hurricane. General Preparedness Prior to a Storm: Know what your marine insurance policy covers. Read it and ask your insurance agent questions. Some insurance companies may require owners to pull their vessel out of the water during a storm or store it in a specific location while the storm is a threat. Ensure your policy will cover the recovery of your vessel, transportation or storage if needed, repair of your vessel or, in the worst-case scenario, the demolition and disposal of your vessel. If your boat is kept at a marina, check your marina policies to gain an understanding of requirements and procedures. Before a Storm When a storm is approaching, determine where your boat will ride out the storm. If your boat needs to be relocated on land, position it on a trailer close to a strong building to break the wind and away from debris and strap it down securely. To anchor the trailer, place blocks beneath it and deflate the tires so it doesn’t shift around due to high winds. If the boat must stay in the water, secure it to the dock with longer, thicker lines to ensure it doesn’t sway during the storm. Ensure there aren’t any loose items on the boat that could potentially fly around during the storm and cause more damage. Take video inventory of all property onboard and place legal documents such as policies, licenses, and registration in a secure, dry place away from the vessel. During a Storm Monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins for storm updates. Do not return to the vessel until there is an official announcement that the storm has passed, or the marina is open. After a Storm Once it is safe to return to the vessel, inspect it for any structural damage. If the boat was damaged during the storm, take photos, and report it to your insurance company as soon as possible. It’s imperative to only work with licensed and insured companies to recover your vessel. In many cases your insurance company has a pre-arranged relationship with a recovery company, and in many cases it’s Sea Tow. Rest assured knowing that Sea Tow’s experienced captains are available to assist with the recovery process and prevent any further damage. About Sea Tow® Sea Tow has been the innovative and premier leader of on-water assistance since 1983. Servicing the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, members are provided with a 24/7 connection with Coast Guard-licensed captains. The pioneering concept, founded by Captain Joseph Frohnhoefer, was established in Southold, NY when the United States Coast Guard ceased response to non-emergency assistance calls.  In 2023, Sea Tow is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of boater assistance, safety, and support. In addition to on-water assistance, the franchise network handles salvage and recovery, responds to natural disasters, environmental hazards, and oil spill cleanups.
