Proceeds from the events will benefit the nonprofit organization. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital has been selected as one of the recipients of a $25,000 grant from The Toy Foundation’s Children’s Hospital Play Grants program. The Hollywood-based pediatric facility’s grant will support its “Shaping the Lives of Little Ones” initiative, which seeks to reduce the negative impact of extended hospitalizations on infants. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is one of only 20 children’s hospitals and health systems in the U.S. selected to receive a grant. The Toy Foundation (TTF) will distribute a total of $380,000, which they estimate will support 240,000 children. “We care for the tiniest and most critically-ill babies for extended periods of time,” said Caitlin Stella, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We’re grateful for this support from the Toy Foundation, which will allow us to introduce the healing power of play through specialized equipment that supports sensory integration, vision, head control, gross and fine motor skills and social interaction. This is an amazing gift in support of healthy child development for our babies.” TTF’s Children’s Hospital Play Grants focus on supporting hospitals that serve under-resourced communities, where many patients rely on Medicaid. On April 6th and 7th, 2024, Miami will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, offering a memorable spectacle. The event will commence at 1:47 p.m. on April 8th, reaching its peak at 3:01 p.m. with 45% of the Sun's disk obscured, and concluding at 4:13 p.m. Being within a narrow path across Mexico, the United States and eastern Canada on April 8 will give a rare chance to see the hottest thing any human ever sees: the corona surrounding the sun. The corona of the sun can be clearly seen in this image taken in 2007. (NASA/JPL-Caltech/NRL/GSFC) The word “corona” means “crown” — during the eclipse, it becomes visible, and streaming plasma leaving the sun appears in amazing patterns. This outer atmosphere shines with a strange whitish light, and is safe to look at once the bright surface of the sun is fully obscured. However, it is not safe to look at partial phases of the eclipse without suitable eye protection such as an approved filter or a shadow box. Humankind has been awed by this spectacle for a very long time without understanding it. Astronomers now know the sun’s corona is heated to up to two million degrees Kelvin, numerically almost equivalent to Celsius for such high temperatures. What astronomers haven’t figured out yet is why the corona is so hot. Heat and density The surface of the sun has a temperature of only about 5,800 kelvins (5,500 C). The reason that we can safely look at the corona but must avoid looking at the surface has to do with density: the corona is very thin, and most of the light we see is reflected sunlight from the surface. The sun’s surface has enough density that, at its temperature, it emits about 65 megawatts for each square meter. Even diluted by distance from the sun of 150 million kilometres, this is enough to cause immediate eye damage. Since the corona is such thin gas, despite its high temperature, it does not emit nor reflect much light. For this reason, we can see it only when the body of the sun is completely blocked by the moon. Otherwise the scattered light in our atmosphere completely overwhelms it. The mystery of the corona’s heat puzzled 19th-century astronomers. At the time, new instruments had been developed to study the composition of celestial bodies. In 1704, Sir Isaac Newton had discovered that “white” light could be split into colors, a result published in Opticks. Unfortunately, his basic views about light were wrong and likely set back the development of optical science 100 years! Only in the early 1800s were instruments developed, largely setting the stage for the immensely profitable German optical industry. This allowed scientists to find out what materials were made of by the light they emitted when heated. A staple of such studies was the Bunsen burner, originally developed not to have a colour like other flames do. A total solar eclipse in 2015 over Svalbard, Norway, reveals the streaming shapes in the solar wind pillars. (M. Druckmüller, S. Habbal, P. Aniol, P. Štarha) Photography and astrophysics The parallel development of photography also helped astronomy to turn into the science of astrophysics, and the sun was an ideal first target for early instruments due to being very bright. During the solar eclipse of 1868, emissions like the bright red known to be from hydrogen were observed. But when this light was broken down with a spectroscope, it also showed a yellow light that had never been observed on Earth. This was determined to be a new element, named for its association with the sun (Greek helios). Only in 1895 was helium found on Earth, and in the strangest of places: radioactive ores. Almost all helium now used on Earth comes from natural gas fields, where it is trapped as it comes up from uranium and other decaying radioactive ores. The helium in the sun later became strong evidence for the Big Bang, in which the first nuclei, which were hydrogen, quickly underwent nuclear fusion to produce helium, but its discovery in the sun set the stage for expecting new elements there. A new mystery Once spectroscopy developed further in the late 19th century, indeed another mystery arose. Many elements had been discovered on Earth and put in systematic order by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev as the “periodic table.” Surprisingly, many elements were also detected in solar spectra, usually when they absorbed specific wavelengths from the pure light coming from deep layers in the sun, leaving absorption lines. Although the sun is made mostly of hydrogen and helium, these are not prominent in its spectrum. However, in the corona, completely unknown lines were found. Following the lead of helium, it was felt that the sun must contain an element never observed on Earth, promptly dubbed coronium. Only in the 1940s was it realized that the emissions actually came from familiar elements, including iron. These were not initially recognized due to being highly stripped of the normal number of electrons going around their nuclei (normally 26 in iron), indicating extreme temperatures that rip atoms apart. Even stranger, the further out one observed from the sun, the hotter the corona became. The 2015 eclipse imaged in the light given off by highly ionized iron. The red indicates a temperature about one million degrees C, green about two million degrees C. (SOURCE), CC BY Solar winds and weather In the late 1950s, the physicist Eugene Parker found that such high temperatures for the solar corona meant that it could not be static: it had to be blowing off into space. This prediction was verified by spacecraft measurements in 1959. Since then, we have known that there is a solar wind, and that the magnetic field shown by coronal structures is carried off into space with it. The solar wind can bring energy to Earth, which penetrates near us when the magnetic field is opposed to that of our planet, bringing auroras and potentially hazardous “space weather.” NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is now nearing the inner regions of the corona, still trying to determine the exact origins of the solar wind. Parker, who passed away in 2022, saw initial results from this spacecraft trying to find exactly how the outrageously hot corona propels the solar wind. Just in time for Spring, Milanese brand Pomellato has opened in Bal Harbour. Located in the prestigious Bal Harbour Shops, this boutique is Pomellato’s fourth retail space in the US alongside New York, Chicago, and Beverly Hills. The boutique, designed by Pomellato’s in house architect Davide Caprioli, is 604 square feet and features the brand’s signature Milanese style. The storefront is fully clad with brass embossed plates. Archways throughout the interior and exterior reflect those at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, a nod to the brand’s heritage. Looking for something fun and sophisticated to do? Enjoy a walking tour of the Miami Design District, as you explore the history of the art and architecture that characterize the neighborhood. The Miami Design District is a neighborhood dedicated to innovative fashion, design, architecture and dining experiences. On April 6th at 11am, we will visit outdoor installations and murals including Buckminster Fuller Fly's Eye Dome, Virgil Abloh’s Dollar a Gallon, Amani Lewis’ Baltimore’s Finest, and more. Fly's Eye Dome by Buckminster Fuller In 1965, Buckminster Fuller designed and patented the Fly’s Eye Dome, which he called an “autonomous dwelling machine”. Prototypes began to be built by hand in 1977, and by 1983 three of the fiberglass spheres in various sizes (12-foot, 24-foot, 50-foot) had been produced. Fuller died before he was able to realize his vision for the structure. However, almost 50 years later, the design, a Monohex variation of the geodesic dome, can clearly be seen as a forerunner of today’s green building movement. In 2011, collector Craig Robins acquired the 24-foot prototype to exhibit it and use it as inspiration for a key element of the Miami Design District. The following year, The Buckminster Fuller Institute, in partnership with Goetz Composites, ConformLab, and DRDesign, began the development of a program to complete Fuller’s vision, using advanced technologies and materials not available to Fuller in the 1970s. BFI was then commissioned to produce a Fly’s Eye Dome utilizing state-of-the-art materials, intelligence, and techniques, to be prominently incorporated in the Miami Design District. Dollar A Gallon III by Virgil Abloh Dollar A Gallon III is a sculpture by artist Virgil Abloh presenting a window into the artist's study and research of the effect of advertising on the impressionable. The work serves as a comprehensive lighthouse of mixed media. The framework is reminiscent of a gasoline sign relaying information about various types of gasoline and the respective pricing, while also being the commodity of an advertised sponsor. The series of global occurrences of this work was considered specifically for the Miami Design District, where its final positioning implies the concept of commerce and necessity re-packaged as a brand — while underscoring the relevancy via location. Ultimately the work is a signature of Abloh’s multi-lauded artistic logic emanating in a physical form not limited to any specific medium. Born in Rockford, Illinois, Virgil Abloh was an artist, architect, engineer, creative director, and fashion designer. After earning a degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he completed a master’s degree in architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago. At IIT, while studying a design curriculum devised by Mies van der Rohe, Abloh began to craft the principles of his art practice. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presented a major traveling survey of Abloh’s work in summer 2019—one of the highest attended exhibitions in the museum’s history. the late Virgil Abloh was the Chief Creative Director and founder of Off-White™ and Men’s Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton. Mr. GirlYouCrazy and Dev by Amani Lewis Born in Washington, D.C. in 1994, Amani Lewis is known for their distinctively elaborate portraits, which often depict individuals from the artist’s social and creative circles through manipulation of photographic imagery. After graduating from the Maryland Institute College of Art, the artist now splits their time between Baltimore and Miami, where they live and work. For their first-ever mural work, Amani constructed a double portrait representing a creative couple from Baltimore—the musician GirlYouCrazy and the fashion stylist Devin—in a tender embrace. Addressing the need to reconsider prevailing narratives overshadowing the subjects’ hometown, Amani explains that “people often think Baltimore is dangerous and scary, but it’s filled with love and History. The culture is unstoppable.” Through a stylized portrayal of Black intimacy and creativity, this mural disarms stereotypical depictions and offers a glimpse into the fertile grounds of Baltimore’s artistic community. VISU Contemporary is opening a new exhibition titled “Loaded” featuring sculptures by artist Al Farrow. Al Farrow and Vandalized Mosque Door An accomplished sculptor in a wide variety of media, Farrow adopts the language of a particular historical period for his work, updating the imagery or material to make cogent observations about contemporary society. In recent years he has used munitions—bullets, guns, hand grenades, bombs—to make three-dimensional projects that resemble Christian reliquaries, Islamic mosques and Jewish synagogues. The surprising inventiveness and the technical tour-de-force of his craftsmanship are highlighted in his work. Farrow denigrates no one belief in his work, being mindful, respectful, discriminating, and probing toward all. His striking composite depictions of religious architectural structures are meticulously realized and perfectly scaled. Each work gives new meaning to the materials Farrow uses. Gun-barrel towers and domes built of bullets not only compel the viewer to consider the present, but also recall the history of conflict. The artist's material choices may be jarring, but they also provoke awe and inspire reflection. By repurposing second-hand firearms and ammunition, Farrow adopts weapons as a medium to illuminate the dark side of various forms of organized religion. With their division of people into saved and damned, brethren or infidels, chosen or forsaken, his mosques, cathedrals and synagogues are a reminder of how often faith has served as a justification for war.
