  • The Spice of Life: 21 Kentucky Derby Winners Enjoying a Variety of Places and Activities

The Kentucky Derby (G1)  is one of the most famous horse races in the world. Taking first prize in the Run for the Roses guarantees the winner a place in history. The Kentucky Derby has been held every year since 1875. As of September 2024, there are 150 Kentucky Derby winners  in the history books. Of these, 21 are still in training, serving as stallions, or living the retired life. They’re engaging in a wide variety of activities from seemingly every corner of the globe. Mystik Dan (rail) reaches the wire before Sierra Leone (outside) and Forever Young (middle) (Photo by Rickelle Nelson/Horsephotos.com) One Derby winner is still in the midst of his racing career. That is Mystik Dan (2024), who won the 150th Kentucky Derby in a three-horse photo finish . He’s currently being rested with an eye on competing as a four-year-old in 2025, possibly with the rich Pegasus World Cup (G1) as a goal. One other Derby winner, Rich Strike (2022) , could potentially race in the future. He made headlines two years ago when he won the Derby at odds of 80-1, the second-biggest upset in Derby history. But he hasn’t raced since May 2023 and is dealing with an injury that may lead to his retirement. The majority of living Derby winners—15 of them—have retired from racing and are currently performing stud duties around the United States and even the world, passing on their Derby-winning genetics to future generations. For fees ranging from as little as $2,500 to as much as $200,000, a mare can be bred to Derby winners Mage (2023) , Mandaloun (2021) , Authentic (2020) , Country House (2019) , Justify (2018) , Always Dreaming (2017) , Nyquist (2016) , American Pharoah (2015) , California Chrome (2014) , Orb (2013) , Animal Kingdom (2011) , Super Saver (2010), Big Brown (2008), Street Sense (2007), Giacomo (2005), and Smarty Jones (2004). So far, none of these stallions have sired a Kentucky Derby winner; father/son Derby duos are uncommon. But the progeny of these Derby winners have nevertheless enjoyed widespread racing success. At the 2023 Breeders’ Cup World Championships , two daughters of Justify (Just F Y I and Hard to Justify) visited the winner’s circle. It’s no wonder why Justify’s stud fee doubled from $100,000 for 2023 to $200,000 for 2024. That’s right—you could spend $200,000 (give or take) on a Porsche 911 Turbo or breed a mare to Justify and wind up with horsepower of a different kind. Many Derby-winning stallions reside at storied Kentucky farms. Justify, for example, stands alongside fellow Triple Crown winner American Pharoah at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Kentucky. But Derby winners can be found at farms across the country, from New York (Big Brown) and Pennsylvania (Smarty Jones) to Oklahoma (Always Dreaming) and Oregon (Giacomo). Others have made their way to more distant parts of the globe. Fan favorite California Chrome and the globetrotting Animal Kingdom stand at stud in Japan. Orb has made his way to Uruguay. Super Saver went to Turkey, which was also the home of Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero (1993) for 20 years until his death from old age in 2019. Two other Derby winners have retired from breeding and are in full retirement at Old Friends in Kentucky. I’ll Have Another (2012), whose stallion career took him to Japan and then California, retired to Old Friends in 2024. He joined Silver Charm (1997), the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner at age 30, who likewise stood at stud in Japan before returning to the United States and joining Old Friend's herd of retired Thoroughbreds in 2014. Once in a while, when he’s not napping or checking out visitors to the farm. But wait, that only accounts for 20 living Derby winners. Who is number 21? That would be Mine That Bird (2009), whose rail-skimming Kentucky Derby upset under Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel became the subject of the 2014 movie 50 to 1. As a gelding, Mine That Bird had no chance at a stallion career, so instead he’s become a well-traveled equine celebrity. He’s entertained visitors at Double Eagle Ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, traveled to movie theaters to promote 50 to 1, paraded before football fans at Falcon Stadium, made multiple visits to the Kentucky Derby Museum (where he residing for a short time in the spring of 2024), and worked as a lead pony escorting horses heading to the track for training. The second half of the Kentucky Derby’s second century will bring many more Derby winners. If the present is any indication, their post-Derby lives will be memorable, no matter what they do or where they do it. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of Kentucky Derby

  • Inside The Numbers: Achane Continues Historic Pace as Dolphins Find Success on Third Downs

The Miami Dolphins fell short to the Buffalo Bills, but despite the 31-10 loss, there were positives the team can build on moving forward this season. We go Inside the Numbers, presented by BDO, to take a look at the most notable team stats, individual metrics, milestones and more from Miami's Week 2 matchup. Achane Continues Strong Start to Sophomore Season Running back De'Von Achane totaled a career-high 22 carries against the Bills and made the most of them. He ran for 96 yards (4.4 yards per carry), with the longest run of the night going for 17 yards. Achane also tied his career high with seven receptions for 69 receiving yards. He caught a five-yard swing pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with 3:21 to go in the first for his first receiving touchdown and second total score of the season. Achane joins Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard as the only three running backs to have recorded a game of at least seven catches and 22 carries since he entered the league in 2023. He is also the first Dolphins running back to record a game of 90-plus rushing yards and 60-plus receiving yards since Kenyan Drake did so against the New England Patriots in 2017. The second-year running back is on a historic pace, as his 13 touchdowns through his first 13 career games are most by a Dolphins running back since at least 1970. His 13 total touchdowns are tied for fourth among NFL running backs in their first 13 career games since 1970, trailing only Eric Dickerson (20), Marcus Allen (16) and Fred Taylor (15). Both Dickerson and Allen are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Taylor ranks 17th all-time in rushing yards. Through the first two games of the 2024 season, Achane has rushed the ball 32 times for 120 yards and a touchdown and has pulled in 14 receptions for 145 yards and a touchdown. His 14 receptions through the first two games of the season are the most by a Dolphins running back since 2004 (Lamar Gordon, 14). With 920 yards, Achane has the most rushing yards by a Dolphins running back in the first 13 games of a career. Third-Down Success Entering the game, the Dolphins' third-down conversion rate against the Bills was just 32.8% since 2022, but this was not the case. Miami converted seven of its 15 third-down attempts, continuing an early-season positive trend, as the Dolphins converted eight times on 16 third-down attempts in Week 1. Miami's 48.39% conversion percentage ranks eighth in the NFL so far this year. This is a step up from their 40.19% conversion rate in 2023. Breakout Game for Smith Miami added experienced and proven talent to its tight end room this offseason with the signing of tight end Jonnu Smith. The veteran pass catcher had a quiet debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars, catching one pass for seven yards. Against the Bills, however, Smith was a primary contributor to the Dolphins' passing attack. He totaled six receptions for 53 yards, which is the most yards he's had in a single game since Week 16 of the 2023 season against the Indianapolis Colts. He eclipsed the 50-plus yard mark four times last season. Smith was targeted seven times, which ties him with Achane for the most in the game. Long Spearheads Miami's Defense Linebacker David Long Jr. led all players with 11 tackles, two of which resulted in lost yardage. This was his first game with 11 or more tackles since Week 6 of the 2023 season against the Carolina Panthers. This was also Long's sixth game with multiple tackles for loss. Other notables across the Dolphins' defense were linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who tallied six tackles (4 solo) and one pass defensed, and cornerback Kendall Fuller who totaled four tackles (2 solo) and one pass defensed. Individual/Team Stats and Milestones The Dolphins outgained the Bills in total yardage, 351-247. Miami has a chance in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks to record at least 350 yards of offense in three-straight weeks for the first time since Week 11-14 of the 2023 season. Several Dolphins achieved games-played milestones. Brooks appeared in his 65th career game, offensive lineman Aaron Brewer appeared in his 60th career game, offensive lineman Austin Jackson appeared in his 50th career game and offensive lineman Liam Eichenberg made his 40th career start and appeared in his 45th career game. Rookie running back Jaylen Wright made his NFL debut, rushing the ball five times for four yards. Wide receivers Grant DuBose and Robbie Chosen recorded their first receptions of the season. This was also the first career catch by DuBose, a seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft who the Dolphins acquired off of waivers on Aug. 28, 2024. Quarterback Skylar Thompson completed 8-of-14 passes for 80 yards in his first appearance since Miami's 2022 AFC Wild Card game against the Bills. For more analysis on the game, listen to the latest episode of Drive Time with Travis Wingfield. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of Miami Dolphins

  • Miami Dolphins Sign Jalen Ramsey to Contract Extension

The Miami Dolphins have signed cornerback Jalen Ramsey to a contract extension through the 2028 season. Ramsey, who was recently named a team captain, enters his ninth NFL season and his second with the Dolphins after being traded to Miami from the L.A. Rams on March 15, 2023. He started 10 games in his first season with Miami, recording 22 tackles (18 solo), three interceptions and five passes defensed. Ramsey made an immediate impact after suffering an injury in training camp and returning to the active roster in Week 8, intercepting three passes in his first two games of the season and earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in the Week 11 win vs. Las Vegas. A Super Bowl LVI Champion, Ramsey has been selected to seven-consecutive Pro Bowls, which is tied for the fourth-longest Pro Bowl selection streak by an NFL defensive back since 1970. Ramsey, who was selected as the No. 25 player on the 2024 NFL Network Top 100 list, has appeared in 118 career game with 117 starts, recording 474 tackles (393 solo), 2.0 sacks, 22 interceptions with one returned for a touchdown, 97 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His 22 interceptions since 2016 are tied for fifth-most among NFL cornerbacks in that span. He entered the league as first-round selection (fifth overall) by Jacksonville in the 2016 NFL Draft after an outstanding collegiate career at Florida State. By ML Staff. • ICA Miami's 2024 Fall Season

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami) tenth anniversary year culminates in a series of major solo presentations of artists recognized for their innovative and exploratory practices. Opening in advance of Miami Art Week, exhibitions include the first U.S. solo museum presentations for rising abstract painter Lucy Bull and influential pop artist Keiichi Tanaami, a showcase of two critical series by Rubem Valentim, a key figure in Afro-diasporic art, and a new immersive installation by interdisciplinary artist Marguerite Humeau. The museum’s project space for emerging artists features new works by Ding Shilun. The program reflects ICA Miami’s dedication to representing a diverse set of global perspectives and spotlighting artists who are pushing the boundaries of contemporary art through their practices. Lucy Bull, 4_28. Courtesy of David Kordansky Gallery “As we mark ICA Miam’s tenth anniversary, our fall season reflects the significant evolution of our exhibitions program since our founding and our steadfast commitment to platforming both rising and established artists influencing contemporary art making,” said Alex Gartenfeld, ICA Miami Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Director. “From bringing renewed attention to the influential artists Ruben Valentim and Keiichi Tanaami to providing a critical institutional platform for rising artists Lucy Bull and Marguerite Humeau, these truly encapsulate ICA Miami’s wide-ranging exhibitions program.” Keiichi Tanaami – (November 21,  2024 – March 30, 2025) The first U.S. museum exhibition of Japanese pop artist Keiichi Tanaami (b. 1936, Japan) surveys Tanaami’s pioneering career, from the artist’s seminal drawings of the 1960s, to collages extending into the very early 1970s, and his works of the 1980s which reflect an increasing interest in architecture and science fiction. Together, the works demonstrate the artist's uses of pop to explore violence, emerging commercialism, and sexuality, in addition to his explorations of mainstream cinema, punk, independent filmmaking, commercial forms, psychedelia, anti-war protests, and the historical consequence of the atomic bomb.   Taanami_Love High Hill_1973 Taanami_Collage_Book4_1969 Taanami_Collage_Book7_60_1971 Lucy Bull: The Garden of Forking Paths – (December 3,  2024 – March 30, 2025) Marking the first U.S. museum exhibition for abstract painter Lucy Bull (b. 1990, New York), this ICA Miami exhibition brings together 20 of Bull’s recent paintings created between 2019-2024, many of which are on view for the first time, and a new monumental lightbox work for the museum’s staircase. Among the works featured are two large-scale horizontal works that stretch over ten feet across, signaling a new space of exploration for the artist into different sizes and scales. In her work, the macroscopic and the microscopic constantly swap places, as often as landscapes become internal psychic spaces and vice versa. Worlds take shape as momentary coagulations, only to settle back into a plasticity that easily folds back into a space of constant metamorphosis. ICA Miami was the first museum to acquire work by Bull in 2020. Lucy Bull, 1_24. Courtesy of David Kordansky Gallery Lucy Bull, 3_13. Courtesy of David Kordansky Gallery Marguerite Humeau – (December 3, 2024 – March 30, 2025) A group of large-scale, newly commissioned sculptures and a video work come together in this immersive installation by Marguerite Humeau (b.1986, France), reflecting her practice at the intersection of speculative exploration and cultural analysis. Influenced by the looming shadow of the climate crisis, the works draw upon deep research and the artist’s interest in existential philosophies and mythologies to speculate on the future of humanity and our ecosystems. Marguerite Humeau. The artist generated this image in part with DALL-E, OpenAI’s image-generation model. Ding Shilun – (December 3, 2024 – March 30, 2025) ICA Miami presents the first solo US museum exhibition by Ding Shilun (b. 1988, Guangzhou, China). Shilun, who is based between London and Guangzhou, will be debuting a series of newly commissioned works that continue the theme of his “personal fable.” Culling inspiration from art history, Chinese folklore, Japanese Manga, and historical events, Shilun creates ethereal and unexpectedly ominous narrative paintings. With their idiosyncratic mythologies, the works broadly reflect the artist’s own experience, while deftly speaking to our shared reality. ICA Miami recently acquired Shilun’s The Weight of The Oath and is the first museum to acquire a work by the artist. Ding Shilun, The Weight of The Oath, (2022) Crossroads: Rubem Valentim's 1960s – (November 21, 2024 – March 30, 2025) This exhibition features two series of paintings by Afro-Brazilian artist Rubem Valentim (b. 1922, Brazil; d. 1991) from the 1960s, highlighting a key period in the artist's career and showcasing his singular voice in modernist painting. Valentin's merging of European geometric abstraction and African influences and sign-systems opened a new field of exploration in painting and shaped the trajectory of Brazilian art for generations of artists. Valentim began the decade working on his Compositions, which drew from the tradition of European geometric abstraction that informed the most progressive lines of postwar Brazilian and South American art. By 1967, when he began creating the Emblems, Valentim increasingly incorporated influences of deities in Afro-Brazilian religions, resulting in a new vocabulary and approach to form. These paintings evolved from traditional oil on canvas works to austere bas-reliefs and free-standing objects that incorporated signs made out of wood. Sustainability Commitment ICA Miami is committed to reducing its climate footprint by adopting best practices for sustainability and partnering with organizations that focus on conservation. As part of this effort, ICA Miami has adopted sustainable shipping methods for all exhibitions and implements carbon offsets for select major exhibitions. ICA Miami is also the first museum in Florida to support the use of renewable energy and the growth of the sector. The museum matches 100% of its electricity consumption through the procurement of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).  In 2020, the museum was among the original grantees for the first Frankenthaler Foundation funding for sustainability efforts in the arts. • Honouring the Art of Restoration at Homo Faber 2024

From Sept. 01-30, the third edition of Homo Faber will be held at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice under an overarching "The Journey of Life" theme. For this event celebrating craftsmanship, Vacheron Constantin has chosen to celebrate the art of restoration by inviting the Louvre Museum’s cabinet-making workshop. This will provide an opportunity to showcase the work and techniques of Vacheron Constantin’s artisans alongside those of the Louvre. The art of restoration at Vacheron Constantin Restoration is an art for which Vacheron Constantin has the deepest respect. Dedicated to creating watches made to last through the centuries, the Maison is committed to maintaining all the watches it has produced since its origins in 1755. Whatever the type of intervention, from a simple one-off overhaul to major repairs involving restoring components to their original condition, the Manufacture's watchmakers have a direct impact on watches’ longevity. As a guarantor of the enduring existence of its watches, even the oldest ones, the Manufacture makes a point of ensuring that restored models retain their original characteristics. To this end, it has a large stock of original components. Should they run out, the watchmakers in its restoration workshops will be able to produce them on vintage machines, according to the historical technical data – plans, diagrams and instructions for use – preserved in the Heritage archives that list every single one of Vacheron Constantin’s creations. Discover more about the art of restoration at Vacheron Constantin   Vacheron Constantin and the Louvre: an artistic and cultural partnership This science of restoration, passed on from generation to generation for almost three centuries in the Vacheron Constantin workshops, will be highlighted at the forthcoming Homo Faber exhibition, a not-to-be-missed event for contemporary arts and crafts. During the next edition, which takes place at the Giorgio Cini Foundation on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, Vacheron Constantin will once again be taking part alongside the art workshops of the Louvre, which has been partnering with the Maison since 2019. The art workshops at the Louvre Museum ensure that works of art are presented and conserved in the best possible conditions. Each workshop has its own specificities, touches and techniques, some of which have been handed down since the 19th century.   Artisans at work on site The restorers from the cabinetmaking workshop at the Louvre Museum are presenting the work they carried out on a mahogany-veneered oak display case with gilded bronze appliqué decoration dating from 1822 and crafted by the famous cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter. This creation, along with three other identical display cases, was used to exhibit gems from the royal collections and objects belonging to Marie-Antoinette in the Jewellery Room at the Louvre. Alongside them, Vacheron Constantin's watchmakers present the work involved in restoring antique watches. The booth and its display cases feature a number of timepieces from Vacheron Constantin's private collection, including a 1985 Lady Kalla jewellery watch, a 1908 pocket watch and three historic American 1921 watches, including the one-off model reproduced in 2021 using period tools and watchmaking techniques. This highly complex project is a perfect illustration of the Maison’s commitment to its heritage and to passing on its expertise. Homo Faber 2024 The Journey of Life Art Direction by Luca Guadagnino and Nicolò Rosmarini Curated by Michelangelo Foundation For Creativity & Craftsmanship 1 - 30 September 2024 10 am to 7 pm Venice, Fondazione Giorgio Cini Homo Faber 2024: The Journey of Life is the third edition of Homo Faber Biennial, a celebration of contemporary craftsmanship in Venice curated by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship , a non-profit institution based in Switzerland, which champions craftspeople with the aim of promoting a more human, inclusive and sustainable future.   Vacheron Constantin heritage timepieces on display at Homo Faber: Pendant watch – 1908 Before securing their watches to their wrists, women preferred to wear them as pendants, as exemplified by this dainty jewellery piece from 1908. The subtly guilloché caseback is adorned with a translucent aqua green translucent enamel applied using the flinqué technique, inlaid with fine lace-like platinum appliques set with rose-cut diamonds. Topped by a yellow gold bow, this composition is decorated in keeping with the period’s Art Nouveau aesthetic that favoured naturalist-inspired compositions. The silver-toned dial also features a delicate central setting with black Arabic numerals and railway minutes track. Lady Kalla – 1985 The Lady Kalla has been a reference among jewellery watches since its creation in 1980. Carved from a block of 18K yellow gold, it is set with more than 120 emerald-cut white diamonds selected with meticulous patience, as their purity, hue and proportions require patient research. Its dial is also paved with 15 emerald-cut diamonds. Combining High Watchmaking and High Jewellery, Lady Kalla features a baguette-type hand-wound 17-jewel mechanical movement beating at 19,800 vibrations per hour. Like all Vacheron Constantin movements, it is adorned with a Côtes de Genève pattern. The crown is positioned under the movement so as to enable the gems’ full brilliance to shine through unhindered. American 1921 – 1919 The origins of Vacheron Constantin's American 1921 go back to this model made in 1919. Vacheron Constantin was experimenting with different case shapes at the time, always in very limited numbers. The wristwatch had become a genre in its own right and was steadily gaining popularity. Several examples of this model were produced in 1919 with small seconds on a round enamelled dial featuring 11 luminescent Arabic numerals surrounded by a railway minutes track swept over by cathedral hands. The American 1921 model is distinguished first and foremost by its design, with a look defined by its elegantly understated cushion-shaped case. It also stands out for the way it shows the passing of time, with its calibre unexpectedly offset by means of a 45-degree counter-clockwise rotation and enabling diagonal readings. The crown is positioned between 1 and 2 o'clock in the top right-hand corner of the case. The watch is as intriguing as it is seductive. American 1921 – 1921 In 1921, Vacheron Constantin presented a new small series of its aptly named American 1921 watch for the eponymous market. Behind the unusual design of the timepiece created in the 1920s lies the quintessence of the Roaring Twenties, which for almost a decade sent a wind of renewal blowing across the United States and Europe. Synonymous with artistic and cultural effervescence, it was an era conducive to boldness and to shaking up convention. In Vacheron Constantin’s workshops, the tremendous inventive momentum of these years also gave rise to new perspectives. At a time wristwatches were beginning to take over from pocket watches,  advances in watch movement miniaturisation gave free rein to a burst of creativity. This provided scope for all manner of fanciful touches, as demonstrated by this 1921 timepiece embodying a skilful blend of understatement and irreverence, classic elegance and a unique twist. American 1921 Pièce unique – 2021 Vacheron Constantin celebrated the 100th anniversary of the American 1921 by recreating this emblematic model from scratch. From the 11- ligne  Calibre Nouveau to the gold case along with the decorations and exterior components, the American 1921 Pièce unique watch reproduces the original properties of its ancestor created a century ago. This highly complex and unprecedented process involved the most experienced watchmakers in the Restoration workshop and the Vacheron Constantin Heritage team, who spent a year reviving old tools and forgotten know-how in the course of a passionately exciting human and technical adventure. Louvre object on display at Homo Faber: Jacob-Desmalter display case – 1822 This mahogany-veneered oak display case with applied gilt bronze decorations belongs to a set of four identical showcases made in 1822 by famous cabinetmaker Jacob-Desmalter to exhibit gems from the royal collections and Marie-Antoinette's collectibles in the Jewellery Room at the Louvre.  The skills of the Museum’s current cabinetmakers – who carried out the complete restoration (wood grafting, varnishing using dedicated pads, gilding bronze surfaces, etc.) – will enable these creations to be presented again in autumn-winter 2024 in their original room from which they had been displaced during successive refurbishments of the palace.
