- Coup’s Takeaways: HEAT Get Right In San Francisco As Jaquez Jr. And Jovic Hold Off Hot Night From Curry
1. A cross country flight. A double overtime loss. A back-to-back against a good team. These are the situations that setup most teams for failure. Those are also the exact situations where the HEAT surprise you, even if you’ve been surprised so many times before. The start to this one in San Francisco wasn’t any more aesthetically pleasing than the opening in Sacramento, both teams missing as it looked like everyone was moving in slow motion. Then Steph Curry, after an airball, came to life with three straight jumpers to give the Warriors an early lead. The rest of the half belonged to Miami. Zone once again helped, Kel’el Ware showing positive moments as a rim deterrence in the middle of it as the Warriors, not a particularly big team as far as having the size to pass over the top of the zone, struggled for clean looks. With Jaime Jaquez Jr. attacking the seams and finishing through contact and Duncan Robinson finishing off the quarter with consecutive threes, Miami owned a 29-23 advantage by the team the first 12 were done. The one thing about the zone, though, is that it’s effectively a super deep drop coverage against any screen set on the perimeter and Draymond Green used that to his advantage to spring Curry for another couple of threes to open the third. Problem for the Warriors was that nobody else was making much of anything (8-of-29 from three in the half, six of those makes from Curry), and with Miami’s threes falling it was all more than enough for a 61-48 lead at the half even with the Warriors earning themselves some second chances on the glass. Golden State started to find a little offense to open the third, Miami still toggling into zone, but so too did Terry Rozier while Jaquez Jr. dropped in a soft running hook as the lead held. A couple of Warriors threes, another one from Curry – off a reverse spin around the screen that maybe nobody else in the league could pull off – with Ware dropped back closed the gap to six. Ware got it back on the other end with a pair of lobs as Nikola Jovic effectively passed him open, but the Warriors had found their verve by that point, the lead down to three before a right corner three from Herro, the game becoming a bit more frazzled before the buzzer took Miami into the fourth up 84-78. Curry (31 points on 22 shots) wasn’t done, tying his season high with his eighth three right as the quarter began. The Warriors had it down to one, but then consecutive missed threes led to consecutive corner threes for Jovic, the second of which came with a foul. It what felt like seconds, Miami’s lead was back to double digits as Alec Burks sank a triple. With Miami up 18, Steve Kerr waved the white flag and pulled his starters with three minutes to play, the night in the HEAT’s hands as they ultimately take it, 114-98, to end their brief losing streak. 2. It’s a bit reductive to boil it down like this, but it always feels like a bit of a variance play from Erik Spoelstra – particularly on nights where the team is either shorthanded or on a rest disadvantage – when the team sits back in zone for most of the night. On some level, though, that’s what it is and it’s earned Miami a fair amount of wins over the years. The bet paid off tonight in spades. Curry did get his, no doubt, as having a center dropped all the way back in the paint gave him plenty of airspace – insofar as the airspace he requires is half that of anyone else – to knock down 8-of-17 from deep. But with the rest of Curry’s team 6-of-33 (18.1 percent) from the arc and the zone doing its job of sealing off the rim beyond a handful of nice passing combinations, the HEAT were playing with a math advantage simply from the strategy being deployed. You still have to make your own shots, though, and it helps to earn the right looks along the way. You can call anything variance if you want, but teams have to create their own luck along the way – shots aren’t actually coin flips – and Miami was the more aggressive, more physical team throughout, their constant drive-and-kick action tilting Golden State’s defense and creating one open three after another as the HEAT finished 6-of-13 from the corners. It was that early fourth-quarter sequence, three straight missed Warriors threes followed by three straight HEAT threes, all of them open, that decided this one after the lead had shrunk to one. That’s variance, sure, but you have to defend when you’re in zone or man and the HEAT (16-of-40 from deep) played their game the way they’re supposed to in order to give themselves a chance to win with superior shooting. 3. Very fine evenings both for Jaquez Jr. (18 points on 12 shots) and Jovic (20 points on 17 shots) to help out Herro and Adebayo the night after that double-overtime affair. Jaquez Jr. did much of his damage early, punishing the Warriors’ smaller lineups on one hand but also showing zero fear of a generational defender in Draymond Green on the other. The jumper has been here and there for Jaquez Jr. – he did hit a three tonight – but what has been lost in his sophomore season is that his driving game, by far the most impressive part of his rookie outing, has been just as effective as before. The developmental journey is ongoing, the downhill, physical, shoulders-first and footwork-second part of it is miles ahead of the majority of the league. Jovic hit those two corner threes, yes, but what continues to impress is the way he’s using his size with the ball in his hands. A few of his six two-pointers were easy runouts off live-ball turnovers, others were downhill moves, through contact. Where once Jovic would look rushed when trying to get to the right finish, he’s now slowing down in the paint, finding the right angles to where he can just finish over the top. It’s still interesting to see teams doubling him in the post before he even scores on them from the block, but while it happens Jovic has happily been whipping passes to the weakside corner for open looks. There’s some nice chemistry with Kel’el Ware, too, as Jovic twice passed the rookie open, essentially directing Ware’s movement by leading him with a look over the top when a defender turned his back. Those are the passes that don’t come easy, and they’re the passes that really excite you about where Jovic could take his game. By ML Staff. Courtesy of NBA. Words by Couper Moorhead . - PGA TOUR Expands Performance Benefits for PGA TOUR University
The PGA TOUR Policy Board today approved expanded performance benefits for PGA TOUR University, further enhancing the four-year old program designed to provide emerging talent with an accelerated path to professional golf. Effective January 2, 2025, the approved changes include modifications to the PGA TOUR University Accelerated points table, expanded access to the Korn Ferry Tour for PGA TOUR University top-10 finishers and a provision to recognize a No. 2 finisher in PGA TOUR University who achieves a competitive record comparable to past No. 1 players. “Today’s announcement builds on the success PGA TOUR University has experienced over the past four years and continues to evolve the program’s offerings to properly identify and reward elite collegiate talent,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Advancing opportunities for emerging stars is a tenet of our competitive platform, and PGA TOUR University plays a critical role in that process.” Modernization of PGA TOUR University Accelerated Points Distribution Through PGA TOUR University Accelerated , a high-achieving junior, sophomore or freshman can earn PGA TOUR membership and become eligible for all open, full-field TOUR events. Players earn points based on their accomplishments in college, amateur and professional golf, and they will earn PGA TOUR membership if they amass at least 20 points by the end of their third year of NCAA eligibility. Originally launched in 2022, PGA TOUR University Accelerated has awarded one PGA TOUR card to date, with Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent earning TOUR membership effective when he turns professional in June 2025. As the PGA TOUR continues to evaluate the PGA TOUR University Accelerated points table, modifications were recommended – and approved by the PGA TOUR Policy Board – to ensure the 20 point threshold remains a high bar for elite underclassmen to strive for, while modernizing based on the collegiate and amateur golf landscape. Winners of additional elite amateur championships will be awarded points, and points will be available for a top finish at the NCAA Championship, sustaining the No. 1 World Amateur Golf Ranking, and top-five finishes in PGA TOUR events. Modifications to the PGA TOUR University Accelerated Points Table: Lifetime 26 weeks as No. 1 in WAGR – 1 point Lifetime 52 weeks as No. 1 in WAGR – 1 point Top-5 in an official PGA TOUR event or select DP World Tour events – 1 point Top-10 & ties at D-I NCAA Individual National Championship – 1 point Jones Cup – 1 point Northeast Amateur – 1 point Southern Amateur – 1 point African Amateur – 1 point (previously 2 points) Asia-Pacific Amateur – 1 point (previously 2 points) D-I NCAA Individual Champion – 2 points (previously 3 points) European Amateur – 1 point (previously 2 points) Latin America Amateur – 1 point (previously 2 points) The Amateur – 2 points (previously 3 points) US Amateur – 2 points (previously 3 points) Western Amateur – 1 point (previously 2 points) The comprehensive list of criteria which award PGA TOUR University Accelerated points can be found here: https://www.pgatour.com/article/news/university/accelerated. Expansion of Access for PGA TOUR University Graduates to the Korn Ferry Tour The top 10 players in the final 2025 PGA TOUR University Ranking will now earn exempt Korn Ferry Tour membership for the remainder of the season. This marks an increase in exempt status, as previously the top five players in the final PGA TOUR University Ranking earned exempt Korn Ferry Tour membership, and finishers 6-10 earned conditional Korn Ferry Tour membership. This modification was approved due to the immediate and impressive impact of PGA TOUR University finishers 1-10 in past seasons and provides these players more clarity and certainty in their Korn Ferry Tour playing schedule. Additionally, a category has been expanded to award Korn Ferry Tour membership for the following season to two more PGA TOUR University players (from three to five), based on their combined points total from events played on the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour. Beginning in 2026, this category will expand to the top-five finishers in combined points accrued on the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour during the season after their finish in PGA TOUR University. Provision to Recognize High-Performing Leading Finishers in PGA TOUR University Ranking Beginning with the final 2026 PGA TOUR University Ranking, leading finishers with a points average that is equal to or exceeds 1,300 would earn PGA TOUR membership equal to the No. 1 finisher. This modification was approved to account for rare situations where there are two exceptional players in the same graduating class. Since the launch of the PGA TOUR University Ranking in 2021, a No. 2 finisher has not surpassed the 1,300-point mark, and this stipulation would have only occurred twice in the last decade. In the four years (2021-24) of PGA TOUR University graduating classes, the No. 2 finisher has averaged 1,176 points. By ML Staff. CContent/Image courtesy of PGA

The 2025 Road to the Kentucky Derby challenge series event will reward the top-five finishers with qualifying points on a 10-5-3-2-1 basis. Kale’s Angel was a dominant winner of the Advent S. while making his dirt debut last time and will be difficult to upend with any improvement off of that one. He is the Expert Pick of the Week. Coal Battle (left) descends upon Speed King in the Springboard Mile (Photo by Dustin Orona Photography/Remington Park) Trained by Peter Miller, the son of sharp young sire Complexity graduated on the lawn in his second lifetime try prior to running third in the Zuma Beach S. (G3) on the weeds at Del Mar . The $150,000 two-year-old purchase looked the part on the dirt most recently and I feel that the added distance will be well within his scope on this occasion. Ramon Vazquez will retain the mount and have the bay forcing the pace from the opening bell. Hot Property went long at first asking and led at every call en route to a fine first-out victory at Fair Grounds. The Brad cox trainee earned a strong 100 Brisnet Late Pace figure in his tally, and the colt is bred to be a good one with seemingly no distance limitations going forward. The Medaglia d’Oro sophomore, who is a half-brother to 2017 Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) queen Actress, has posted four nice morning drills in the interim and will have Flavien Prat in the silks. The dark bay son of Coal Front has shown nice improvement throughout his career and is also proven at a route of ground for conditioner Lonnie Briley. The Kentucky-bred colt will be unhurried in the early stages before putting in his best work late beneath Juan Vargas. - Elena Sanchez: Stunts, Spotlight, and the Road to Hollywood
Elena Sanchez is a powerhouse of talent whose career spans acting, producing, and stunt performing in both indie films and major blockbusters. Known for her roles in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire , Avengers: Endgame , and upcoming projects like Captain America: Brave New World , Elena has made her mark in the industry, sharing the screen with legends like Nicolas Cage, Tom Cruise, and Chris Pratt. Born in Germany to a German mother and Spanish father, Elena’s journey from childhood performances to global recognition is a testament to her dedication and versatility. In this exclusive interview with Miami Living Magazine, Elena opens up about her latest film, Bone Face , her passion for stunt work, and what’s next in her exciting career. Miami Living (ML): From your early days performing in plays like "Return to Neverland" and "The Nutcracker", to starring in massive blockbusters, how has your journey as an actress and stunt performer evolved over the years? Elena: In elementary school, I think we all had to do the school plays, and it was just a fun thing to do. I also did ballet, which is how I ended up as a reindeer in The Nutcracker . At some point though, gymnastics took over and that was the only “performing” I did throughout middle and high school. I didn’t rediscover acting until I was in college but decided pretty quickly that I wanted to turn it into a career. After college, I moved to New York City and started working as an extra in all the TV shows that were filming there at the time, like Law & Order and Gossip Girl . I enrolled in drama school and became a waitress. Eventually, I found myself in New Orleans, which was considered Hollywood South at the time, and I started working pretty quickly as a stunt double on all the major movies that were coming through town, thanks to my background as a gymnast. After a couple of years, I went back to drama school and really focused on acting again. Since then I’ve been lucky to work fairly consistently, whether as an actress, doing stunts, or combining the two in what we call “action-acting.” ML: You’ve worked with some incredible actors, from Nicolas Cage to Tom Cruise. Is there a standout moment or lesson you’ve learned from any of your co-stars that has stuck with you? Elena: It’s just like Maya Angelou said — 'At the end of the day people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.' Some of the actors I’ve worked with have gone out of their way to be nice or make me feel comfortable in some way, and I will never forget that. When you’re working on a movie set, you’re interacting with dozens, if not hundreds of people a day. Each of those interactions is an opportunity to acknowledge someone, and maybe even make them feel good or put a smile on their face. I try to remember that every single day. ML: In your upcoming film Bone Face , you play a sheriff’s deputy investigating brutal murders at a summer camp. What was it like preparing for a role in a thriller like this, and what drew you to the character of Deputy McCully? Elena: Ever since watching Knives Out , I’ve really wanted to do a murder mystery. When I read the Bone Face script and the role of Deputy McCully was offered to me, I jumped at the chance. Plus, I knew I would get to work with a team of people who I was familiar with and loved. It was a no-brainer! To prep for the role, I got myself very familiar with the script and also did some research on police officers. I wanted to play the role naturally and asked myself, “How would I react in this situation?” while at the same time knowing I would have the training and skill as a police officer to not let my emotions interfere with the job I had to do. ML: You’ve been a part of some truly iconic films, including The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Avengers: Endgame . What’s it like to be part of projects with such a massive global impact? Elena: It’s really incredible to be a part of such a huge project. It’s amazing watching them come together. No expense is spared, and you get to work with the best of the best. Those movie sets work like a well-oiled machine, and you feel lucky to be a tiny little part of it. It’s also really nice to hear from people how much those movies meant to them , whether they helped them through a tough time in life or inspired them to make a change in some way. ML: Stunt work is a huge part of your career. What’s been your most challenging stunt to date, and how do you prepare mentally and physically for those demanding scenes? Elena: That’s a tough question because some stunts have been more challenging mentally, while some have been more challenging physically, while some were both. I’ve done a stair-fall, been hit by a car, jumped off a cliff, been set on fire to name a few. Then there was the time I hung from a helicopter in Spider-Man’s arms surrounded by skyscrapers—that wasn’t challenging for me physically, but it was a challenge logistically in terms of how much went into making something like that happen. In terms of preparation, mentally it’s about knowing your own skill set and trusting your body, while also trusting your team. And sometimes a stunt might involve some kind of specific training, but physically it’s mostly about taking care of your health and staying at a fitness level that your body is able to perform at. ML: With your role in Captain America: Brave New World coming up, how did it feel to be part of the Marvel universe, and can you share any exciting behind-the-scenes moments from that project? Elena: I’ve been lucky to be a part of several Marvel films, and they’re always a great experience. I can’t share much about the new Captain America , but I was excited to get to work with a bunch of my friends, which is always a treat! Also, Harrison Ford is such a legend. Getting to see him work was really special. Make sure to catch it in theaters, you won’t be disappointed! ML: Your career spans across both independent films and major blockbusters. How do you approach these different types of projects, and is there a unique energy on set between the two? Elena: The main difference between smaller indies and major blockbusters is the budget, and the number of people in the crew. Small indies are like a little film family. You all work together, sometimes wearing multiple hats, to create what is often a passion project. The big blockbusters are like a well-oiled machine, with hundreds of crew members on set, and thousands more behind the scenes. The main difference in approach is that on indies there is a little more creative freedom, whereas on major blockbusters things have gone through multiple channels before you show up to work, and there is often already a very clear idea of what you are supposed (and allowed) to do. What doesn’t change is the energy and the passion everyone has at work. Ultimately, I think most people have decided to work in this business to tell good stories, and I love being surrounded by fellow artists. ML: Looking ahead, what exciting projects or roles are you most looking forward to tackling in the future, and how do you envision your career evolving in the next few years? Elena: I just wrapped on a thriller called The Neglected , where I play a detective opposite Josh Duhamel. We also had Dylan Sprouse, Jason and Jeremy London, and Til Schweiger in the cast. It’s a great script and I can’t wait for people to see that one later this year. I’m looking forward to doing more roles like that, but also want to try something lighter, like a romantic comedy or a Christmas movie! I’ve also started producing in the last couple of years so I’m looking forward to doing more of that as well. Follow Elena on: IMDb | Instagram | YouTube Facebook | Twitter | Website By ML Staff. - LandStudio: Redefines Outdoor Living in South Florida & Beyond
Based in Miami, Florida, LandStudio ( landstudiomiami.com ), led by Karla Ortez, has been transforming outdoor spaces into harmonious environments since 2009. Born in Honduras, a country celebrated for its biodiversity, Ortez draws upon her deep connection to nature and her Central American roots to craft inspired landscape designs. The studio’s latest project, a private residence in Coconut Grove, highlights LandStudio’s dedication to integrating native plants into residential landscapes. Partnering with CASA DDI, one of the area’s leading luxury real estate developers, the project exemplifies a thoughtful collaboration between design and architecture. In harmony with LandStudio’s landscape vision, CASA DDI employed high-end organic materials that complement the lush outdoor environment. The exterior features natural coral stone cladding, providing timeless elegance while blending seamlessly with the tropical surroundings. Pipe wood accents for the ceilings and eaves add warmth and texture, while indoor elements such as limestone and natural woods create a tranquil, zen-like atmosphere that mirrors the lush outdoor spaces. This seamless integration of architecture and landscape demonstrates the beauty and functionality of natural materials. LandStudio’s role centered on designing a vibrant tropical garden that honors South Florida’s native flora and the mature landscape already present on the site. Mature oaks were thoughtfully preserved and integrated with carefully selected native trees, creating a natural enclosure that offers privacy and strengthens the property’s connection to its surroundings. The result is what Ortez describes as a “manicured jungle,” where curated gardens coexist with the natural elegance of the outer landscape. The use of native vegetation adds sustainability, reduces maintenance, and supports local wildlife. By providing habitats for pollinators, birds, and other beneficial species, the project enhances the ecological value of the space. “Our goal was to create an outdoor space that felt like an extension of the local landscape,” Ortez explains. “Native plants help us achieve that harmony while reducing the need for excessive maintenance.” This Coconut Grove residence exemplifies the shared values of LandStudio and CASA DDI: a commitment to sustainability, ecological responsibility, and the creation of homes that inspire harmony with nature. LandStudio seamlessly blends the artistry of landscape design with functional outdoor living, utilizing natural materials like wood and stone alongside native plants to craft inviting, sustainable spaces. “I believe the idea of a perfectly staged look is often seen as ideal, but in my experience, using native plants can be far more captivating,” says Ortez. Through LandStudio, Karla Ortez continues to merge nature with architecture, leaving a lasting impact on South Florida’s landscapes—both indoors and out. Her commitment to sustainability and deep respect for nature lie at the core of every project, establishing LandStudio as a leader in ecologically responsible landscape design.
