- Haunted Circus Miami Returns to South Florida's Tropical Park
No tricks, just treats, as Haunted Circus Miami returns to South Florida this fall with more scary thrills and enchanting activities to celebrate the spooky season. From September 15 through October 29, families can visit Tropical Park in Miami for a Halloween-themed carnival atmosphere with the perfect combination of light scares and family fun to get everyone in the spirit. Following its successful debut in 2021, Haunted Circus Miami returns to the city bigger and better than ever with 13 new rides, 6 inflatable bounce houses and carnival games, plus double the entertainment with spine-chilling performances, pumpkin arts and crafts, tons of photo opportunities, and interactive experiences for the whole family. The carnival will take guests on a haunting mystery quest to free the circus from the jack-o’-lantern’s evil spell. The mystifying quest will feature a cast of characters, including clowns, aerial acrobats and jugglers, and spellbinding performances from a local circus troupe. Along the journey to break free from Jack’s wicked magic, guests are invited to partake in tarot card readings, pumpkin carving and smashing, screenings of classic Halloween movies, and a not-so-scary petting zoo. Thrill-seekers will also have a “fang-tastic” time at the Haunted Circus as they navigate the land of rides, which includes two Ferris wheels, a large one for adults and a smaller one for children; the Large Round Up, which uses centrifugal force to push riders against a wall as they spin; and the Super Swing, an elevated carousel with rotating, suspended swings that mimics the sensation of flying. Visitors can also defy gravity as they take a wicked plunge down the Super Slide and embark on a treacherous voyage aboard the ghostly Mini Pirate Ship. For guests who crave less of an adrenaline rush but equal excitement, inflatable bounce houses will feature seven unique themes of battles, adventure and play. The high spirits continue on the bumper cars, where vehicles collide in a bone-chilling frenzy. The youngest pumpkins in the patch will have a spooktacular time riding smaller attractions, including a bewitching animal carousel, a fiery dragon ride and whimsical tea cups. Tickets start at $19. - HCA Healthcare Raises Over $300 Million in Clinical Education & Training Investments
HCA Healthcare, Inc., one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, today announced more than $300 million in investments to support the education and training of nurses. This includes more than $200 million towards the expansion of Galen College of Nursing and approximately $136 million towards the opening of new HCA Healthcare Centers for Clinical Advancement. “We believe supporting nurses in their practice through available and effective clinical education helps drive the delivery of high-quality patient care,” said Sam Hazen, chief executive officer of HCA Healthcare. “We are proud of the resources and education opportunities we offer our nurses and are committed to helping train the next generation.” Since 2019, HCA Healthcare has invested approximately $46 million to open twelve new Centers for Clinical Advancement, bringing its current footprint to fifteen locations nationwide. The company recently committed an additional $90 million to open twenty additional centers over the next three years. HCA Healthcare’s Centers for Clinical Advancement are designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and bedside through practice-based instruction. The centers use leading technology and specialized manikins to simulate real-life scenarios nurses may experience at the bedside. The Centers for Clinical Advancement operate independently from nursing schools and are dedicated to helping practicing nurses advance their skills and careers. New nursing graduates use the centers to complete their Nurse Residency program and choose specializations, while veteran nurses can use the centers to earn advanced certifications. As a part of the Nurse Residency program, new graduates complete classroom instruction and perform hands-on skills training utilizing high-fidelity immersive simulation within the centers. Technology within the centers also allows students to learn from clinical experts across the nation, if needed, and to record their simulations to play back scenarios and debrief with colleagues and trained facilitators to further advance their learning. On April 18, HCA Healthcare celebrated the openings of its fourteenth and fifteenth Center for Clinical Advancement in Ogden and Draper, Utah. Across the country, HCA Healthcare has 68 classrooms, 65 simulation rooms, and more than 145 manikins. “Expanding our clinical education agenda, including HCA Healthcare’s Centers for Clinical Advancement nationwide is a large part of our overall nursing strategy,” said Sammie Mosier, chief nurse executive of HCA Healthcare. “Providing a safe and realistic learning environment for our nurses promotes clinical skill readiness and development. We are excited to open these new locations and will continue to invest in our nurses as they provide great care for our patients and communities each and every day.” Since the purchase of Galen College of Nursing in 2020, HCA Healthcare has committed more than $200 million towards the expansion of the college. Bringing Galen into the HCA Healthcare family was strategically designed to bring two leading nursing organizations together to increase access to nursing education and to provide nursing career development opportunities for HCA Healthcare colleagues. Today, more than 3,000 HCA Healthcare colleagues are enrolled at Galen College of Nursing to help advance their careers. Since joining HCA Healthcare, Galen College of Nursing has announced fourteen new campuses nationwide. There are now more than 12,000 students enrolled in Galen. Separately, HCA Healthcare also recently announced a $34.5 million investment to expand Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri. This initiative will support the college’s expansion plans, including the development and building of a HCA Healthcare Center for Clinical Advancement, on the campus of Research Medical Center. A new 78,000-square-foot building will help to better serve the community’s current and future healthcare needs and support increased enrollment as well as faculty and staff. The building will feature a state-of-the-art patient simulation laboratory, technologically advanced classrooms to provide an engaging learning environment, innovative technology to allow students the ability to achieve nursing competencies and small group study spaces and areas to facilitate student and faculty collaboration. The project is expected to be completed in 2025, coinciding with the college’s 120-year anniversary. HCA Healthcare has made other significant investments to support nurses and to educate the next generation of nursing leaders, including: HCA Healthcare offers tuition assistance benefits that allow eligible colleagues to complete the Galen College of Nursing RN-to-BSN program with zero out-of-pocket tuition expenses. In 2022, HCA Healthcare distributed $7.7 million to assist more than 2,250 colleagues in the program. To help address the national nursing shortage, HCA Healthcare has invested in the recruitment of quality nurses while also expanding care teams to include positions such as licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/LVNs), paramedics and nurse externs. In 2022, HCA Healthcare committed $1.5 million to Fisk University to support scholarships for students pursuing healthcare careers and the university’s dual degree program with Galen College of Nursing and $1.5 million to Florida International University’s Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences to expand its faculty, offer scholarships to increase enrollment and help address the national nursing shortage. A $750,000 partnership with the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) was announced in 2022 to provide internship opportunities and scholarships for graduate students in nursing administration and management programs. These are part of the company’s larger $10 million commitment to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and help build a diverse healthcare pipeline. The HCA Healthcare Foundation, through its Healthier Tomorrow Fund, recently announced $250,000 in grants to community colleges and universities to provide high school students early access to careers in healthcare. As part of these grants, Miami Dade College received $50,000 towards its Care Cadre Nurse Exploration Experience and Pensacola State College received $50,000 to help fund the Nurse Explorer Boot Camp. Both programs will give students early exposure to careers in nursing. The HCA Healthcare Foundation, through its Healthier Tomorrow Fund, has also given $130,000 to the Urban League of Broward County to help pilot a workforce development program for those who have been disconnected from the workforce to explore careers in the healthcare field. More on HCA Healthcare Nashville-based HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services comprising 180 hospitals and approximately 2,300 ambulatory sites of care, including surgery centers, freestanding ERs, urgent care centers, and physician clinics, in 20 states and the United Kingdom. - Ten North Group Presents 'Flash Points,' Exhibit by Civil Rights Photographer Ernest C. Withers
Ten North Group (previously Opa-locka Community Development Corporation) is pleased to present Flash Points: The Photography of Ernest C. Withers, an exhibition showcasing 41 original photographs by the revered Memphis-born photographer who documented and shaped the visual narrative of the Civil Rights Movement. Flash Points: The Photography of Ernest C. Withers. Photo courtesy of Ten North Group and The Ernest C. Withers Museum and Collection. Photo courtesy of Ten North Group. Curated in partnership with Ms. Rosalind Withers, Director of the Ernest Withers Museum and Collection of Memphis, Tennessee, and daughter of the artist, Flash Points explores the cognitive character of Black struggle through Withers’ politics of creation as a Black photographer working within the American South. Flash Points runs now through August 31, 2023, at The Arts and Recreation Center (The ARC), 675 Ali Baba Ave, Opa-Locka, FL 33054. In conversation with the remembrance of Juneteenth, Flash Points argues for the pictorial expansion of Blackness and the presentation of history without filter. The exhibition bears witness to the historical tipping points that galvanized the actions and resulting outcomes of The Poor People’s Campaign, the public understanding of Emmett Till’s murder and subsequent trial, the fallout of evictions that led to Fayette County’s Tent City, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Ernest C. Withers, Emmett Till’s uncle, Moses Wright and his friend in Mississippi, ca. 1955, archival printed photograph, 20 x 26 inches (framed). Photo by Isabella Marie Garcia and Courtesy of the Ten North Art Foundation, Opa-locka, Florida. Ernest C. Withers (August 7, 1922 – October 15, 2007) was an African American photojournalist who documented over 60 years of African American history and was often the only photographer to record these scenes, many of which were ignored by the mainstream press. He formed personal and complex relationships with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Young, and Mamie Till-Mobley, and his coverage of the Emmett Till murder trial brought national attention to the racist violence taking place during the 1950s in Mississippi, among other places. Ernest C. Withers Courtesy of The Withers Collection Museum & Gallery. Flash Points emerges as the Black experience is threatened by legislation–including the banning of books written by Black authors, the censorship of Black history, and voter suppression–all of which accentuate the continued oppression and attempted erasure of Black people. Flash Points considers how the work of Ernest C. Withers has contributed to the chronicling of African Americans’ struggles by capturing the contours of collective resistance; a jigsaw amalgamation of the pain and joy of quotidian life; the rejection of the status quo; and the faces of those who came to embody the struggle for the protection of individual rights. - Venturing Out With Veronica H. Speck of VHS Ventures
Although originally from San Diego and currently based in New York City, Veronica H. Speck has long been inspired by Miami, from the architecture and design of the Art Deco district to the plethora of emerging Latin American fashion talent. The eponymous communications consultancy, VHS Ventures, is a full scale international communications consultancy and strategic advisory agency focusing on art, architecture, design, luxury fashion, and hospitality. In addition to public relations, marketing, and event production, VHS Ventures also connects luxury brands to retailers and artists and designers to galleries, showrooms, and art and design fairs. Miami-based clients include Mr. C Hotels and Residences by Cipriani, Grupo ARCA marble, Collecto, Maison d’Etto, and interior designers including Hino Studio and Bea Pernia of Bea Interiors Design. Many clients and partners have hosted events and activations during Design Miami, Art Basel, Swim Week, Formula 1, and The Beach Polo World Cup, including Bernardaud, Tuleste Factory, JO-HS Gallery, The Future Perfect, Flabelus, and more. Today, the Founder shares her favorite design destinations in Miami and entertaining advice. Tell us about your first experience visiting Miami? It was in 2015, and at the time, I was the Public Relations Director for the French luxury home decor and design brand Bernardaud. We collaborated on a special porcelain tabletop collection with Studio Job for the new Faena Hotel and Los Fuegos restaurant by Chef Frances Mallmann. The star-studded opening dinner included Leonardo Dicaprio, Toby Macguire, Adrian Brody, Baz Luhrmann, and more. The steak Chef Mallman prepared was Argentine asado-style, barbecued on the beach, and remains one of the best I have ever had! Dining Destinations? There are many! Hiyakawa for Japanese omakase. The gorgeous undulating wooden interiors were designed by my client, award-winning interior and collectible furniture designer Bea Pernia of Bea Interiors Design. I might be biased as I represent Cipriani, but the view from Bellini restaurant terrace at the rooftop of Mr. C Hotel in Coconut Grove overlooking Biscayne Bay at sunset is quite spectacular. Order the signature Bellini cocktail, served with aperetivo-style bites of parmesan and green olives, followed by the lobster salad, lasagna, and of course the homemade gelato whipped à la minute. Some other favorites include Mandolin Aegean or Michael’s for a Design District power lunch; Uchi or Kyu for sushi; Casa Tua for dinner and dancing in South Beach; The Four Seasons Surf Club restaurant by Thomas Keller for a special occasion; Joe’s Stone Crab; Matador Room by Jean-Georges in The Edition; Boulud Sud by Daniel Boulud; New York transplants Carbone, Balthazar, Sadelle’s, Milos, or Lucali; La Natural for wood-fired pizza; Panther Coffee, Sapore di Mare, Los Félix, and Krüs Wine Bar in Coconut Grove, and many more! Where do you like to stay? I am often visiting Miami for work so I am lucky enough to stay at my client Mr. C Hotel by Cipriani in the Coconut Grove neighborhood. The property was designed by Arquitectonica with interiors by Martin Brudnizki and is designed to resemble a yacht so it truly feels like an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of South Beach. I also enlisted designer Hagit Pincovici to create a custom vitrine to display retail items, including the property’s signature scented candle by Lola James Harper, so walking in the lobby truly feels like a home away from home! Il Giardino is perfect for special events. Recent ones have included a LoveShack Fancy dinner, Cara Cara lunch, Volver x Collecto floral arranging workshop, a Latin American Fashion Summit pop-up shop, and more. Don’t miss an endospheres massage or facial treatment by Debbie Castaneda at BēAtala Spa. If I am in town for Design Miami or Art Basel, I like to stay closer to the convention center at The Edition, Faena, or Four Seasons Surf Club. Art and Design destinations? I love to visit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Fashion designer and client Alexia María shot her SS ‘23 campaign there, and it was the perfect backdrop for the gorgeous new collection. I am endlessly inspired by the Art Deco movement so running or biking past the colorful pastel buildings in South Beach is always a must, as is a visit to The Wolfsonian-Florida International University museum. During Art Basel, I like to view the new exhibitions on display at the Bass Museum, ICA, Rubell Collection, de la Cruz Collection, Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, and the Pérez Museum. The Design District is home to many of my interior design client showrooms. Favorite destinations include: Hino Studio, Bea Interiors Design, Storia, Art + Loom, Grupo Arca, and Avenue Road collectible design gallery in South Beach. Places to Shop and favorite designers at the moment? In my opinion, the best time for shopping is during the Latin American Fashion Summit when Latin brands take over the city and host pop-up shop events. It is a great opportunity to be introduced to new talent. Last year, Johanna Ortiz, Lauren Santo Domingo, and Alexandre Birman hosted panel discussions, and I discovered emerging brands including By Efrain Mogollon, Susana Vega, Andrea Almeida, Leal Daccaret, Port de Bras, and many more. I also love to visit Merrick Park mall to check out Boy Meets Girl for children’s clothes and P de Palma, which carries favorites like Monica Sordo, Sandra Weil, Waimari, and Juan de Dios. Boho Hunter also curates and carries Latin American fashion brands like Eugenia Fernandez and Bahía María. In Coral Gables, the Silvia Tcherrassi boutique is full of the latest collection of colorful Colombian dresses, perfect for Miami or taking on a tropical vacation. In South Beach, the original Webster and Curio at Faena Bazaar never disappoint. I also like to browse Mrs. Mandolin boutique after lunch at Mandolin Aegean bistro. In Coconut Grove, the Agua Bendita boutique and The Bazaar Project, adjacent to Mr. C Hotel, curated with global brands by Turkish owner Yeliz Titiz, is an absolute must– I especially love their emerald jewelry. I also love the Four Seasons Surf Club boutique, and, of course, my client Assouline’s new boutique at Bal Harbour. Tell us about your interest in tabletop. Any entertaining tips? At home in New York, I like to abide by Kant’s rule, “The number of guests at dinner should not be less than the Graces nor exceed those of the Muses” – i.e. begin with three and stop at nine. However, when in Miami, I am often hosting larger client events, especially during the annual Design Miami and Art Basel fair, Latin American Fashion Summit, Formula 1, and Swim Week. My interest in tabletop design and decor began with my role as PR Director at Bernardaud back in 2014 where I often designed and promoted seasonal tablescapes, custom collections with Michelin-Starred Chefs like Daniel Boulud and Eric Ripert, and objets d’art with Jeff Koons, Vik Muniz, Marina Abramovic, Julian Schnabel, the Campana Brothers, and more– many of which were displayed during Art Basel. Fast forward to founding VHS Ventures in 2020, and I now represent and partner with luxury home decor brands like Aina Kari candles made of Murano glass, Studio Lél pietra dura collectible design pieces, Arca marble’s home line, and Collecto which specializes in curated homeware and a bespoke wedding registry service, providing access to the world's finest designers, including Johanna Ortiz home, L’Objet, Ginori 1735, and Saint Louis. Some recent favorite entertaining events that come to mind include a Collecto x Volver floral arranging workshop hosted at Il Giardino in Mr. C Hotel. Favorite Art Basel Events? Goodness, there have been many! In 2021, ARCA marble hosted an exhibition and event at their Esrawe-Studio designed marble showroom in Wynwood. We partnered with Mexico City’s leading art gallery, OMR, and design gallery, MASA, to create a collection of limited-edition collectible designs made of marble by a roster of talent including Gabriel Rico, Jorge Méndez Blake, Adeline de Monseignat, Mario Garcia Torres, Ewe Studio, and Brian Thoreen. Chef Gabriela Cámara, who I had worked with at The Future Perfect in Los Angeles previously and who owns one of my favorite restaurants in Mexico City (Contramar), catered the event and personally served her signature tuna tostadas to guests, which included Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo, Joe Jonas, Pharrell Williams, artist JR, and many more. ARCA also collaborated with interior designer Bea Pernia to present her first furniture collection “Atus” at Design Miami. Last year in 2022, clients Mr. C Hotel by Cipriani and Mexico City-based gallery JO-HS, collaborated to present an “A Surrealist Stay” exhibition and dinner celebrating emerging talent included Ramiro Gonzalez, Demit Omphroy, and Celeste. - Del Mar Fashion: Dress For Success
Fashion and horse racing have always gone hand in hand. From the very first days of organized racing meets, people went to the races not only to see the magnificent Thoroughbreds run but also to be seen themselves. Gentlemen would wear top hats and tails, and later bowler hats; these hats were so ubiquitous at the racetracks in the nineteenth century that in the United States, they came to be called “derby hats.” Ladies would don their flashiest gowns and top their ensembles with brightly colored wide-brimmed hats. As time progressed, the trends in fashion of course changed, but the custom remained: when you attended the track, particularly as an owner or a person of means, you dressed to impress. It continues even today. Now, what you wear of course will depend on several factors. More important race days will require fancier dress. Weather, climate, and season will influence your choices. As well, each track has its own unique culture and dress code (official or not). How can you dress for success at the upcoming Del Mar racing meet in Southern California? First, check out these excellent fashion tips, and then click here to access the Del Mar meet calendar: www.twinspires.com Official Dress Code While the track itself does not have any specific dress requirements for attendance, there are certain areas of the Del Mar Race Track that enact stricter dress codes. The Del Mar Turf Club, for example, is a restricted luxury area of the track which includes several dress code stipulations. Gentlemen are required to wear either a full suit or a collared shirt with a sports jacket and dress slacks. Women may wear tailored blouses and jackets with slacks, a ladies’ suit, or a daytime-style dress. Flip-flop sandals are not allowed, and children are expected to adhere to the dress code as strictly as adults. The rest of the racetrack commonly refers to its dress code as “California chic.” The effect this gives is generally in between casual and formal, with special attention to light, airy fabrics that will not cause discomfort in the intense California sun. Shoes Outside of the Turf Club, there aren’t any specific shoe requirements, but patrons should keep in mind that any trip to the track will require a good deal of walking. Stilettos are a bad idea, as are tightly-strapped sandals: rolled ankles and blisters are never fashionable! Ensembles There are many options available for those who want to be comfortable at Del Mar and still make a splash! Those who want to lean into the chill California vibe of the track can adopt a bohemian look. Women may want to wear a flowy maxi dress or skirt with an assortment of vibrant colors and patterns, or loose palazzo pants. Men might opt for linen button-down shirts in lighter colors and khaki pants. Cropped pants are an excellent choice if you are concerned about collecting dirt on the track itself. Those who wish to be a bit more formal might opt for dresses or suits, but avoid darker clothes or evening formal wear. Light and brightness is the key to Southern California! Hats The Plaza de Mexico is hosting its annual Opening Day Hats Contest on July 21st! To garner attention in the contest, two key factors play a part. First, you will want to ensure that your hat is coordinated with your outfit. Make sure that your color and pattern combinations match, or at the very least do not clash with one another! Second, and most important, bigger is better! The 2022 grand prize winner, Steffi Poce of Park City, Utah, claimed her title with a hat several feet in diameter! The brim featured a model of the track and, in the center, a smiling jockey hoisting a horse on his back! Additionally, there are specific prizes for Best Racing theme, Best Flowers, Best Fascinator, and Most Glamorous. Of course, even if you do not wish to take part in a contest, a hat is an essential accessory at the race track, especially in a sunny place where a wide brim is not only attractive but also shades your face. Men and women alike can be seen wearing floppy hats that serve a function and add to the aesthetic. By Lindsay Griffin. Images courtesy of Jaguar MENA from Flickr.
