The U.S. Air Force Band's premier jazz ensemble, the "Airmen of Note," is set to dazzle South Florida audiences with a series of free concerts in mid-November. Speed continues to be the name of the game, at least in the early going. We’re only on the second game of preseason and it already feels as if we’re repeating ourselves a bit, but pace has clearly been a major point of emphasis and it was even more noticeable today with the full, presumed starting lineup available in Terry Rozier, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo with Nikola Jovic again taking the fifth spot. From the jump that group was running the lanes hard on every rebound and turnover – it almost looks like they’re trying to permanently play on the counter were this soccer – and at the center of most of those possessions was Jovic, both presenting himself as a hit-ahead option and the primary playmaker before settling into the halfcourt. We may be dating ourselves a bit here at this point but if you think of the impact Steve Nash had on the Phoenix Suns in the mid-2000’s that’s effectively what has been emphasized with Jovic in transition. Granted Nash is a Hall of Famer and Jovic is a third-year player still finding his way in the league so don’t take things too literally, and the half-court game is a different story. The offense itself was a little stop and start in terms of putting points on the board – in the first half when Erik Spoelstra was running with what for the time being appears to be the 10-man rotation – but that was mostly due to both Miami and New Orleans struggling from the three-point line. Still, plenty of usage for both Herro and Rozier as they combined for 23 points on 18 shots in those opening quarters, several sets called by Spoelstra clearly designed to get Rozier and Herro’s shot creating abilities working in tandem with Adebayo often functioning as a connective hub. No conclusions to draw right now as we’ll check in on the pace numbers later, you can simply feel when watching the group that needs time and repetitions that Jovic – he only scored three points but that’s largely beside the point – may be setting up as the rug that really ties the room together. As expected once Herro and Jaime Jaquez Jr. were healthy enough to play they took their spots in the rotation as Alec Burks – previously starting – was given the day off and Pelle Larsson didn’t figure into the first-half bench rotation. There was some question as to whether or not Miami would extend their rotation to 11 in order to factor in another center, something Spoelstra did at times last year to keep Kevin Love’s minutes down while not overextending Adebayo, but tonight neither Thomas Bryant nor Kel’el Ware played in the first half. Bryant then started the second half as Adebayo and Love’s duties were finished for the evening, that secondary group going on a run against a mixed Pelicans lineup that put the game mostly out of reach. It's too early to say for sure what Spoelstra will do with the rotation given his proclivities toward experimentation in that area, but all we’ve seen so far is the same intended starters, as mentioned above, with a bench five that includes Jaquez Jr., Love, Duncan Robinson, Haywood Highsmith and Dru Smith as the backup point guard. It may not be the most scintillating talking point and yet it’s half the game when it comes to preseason, where every team is sorting out exactly who they’re going to be, and who they’re going to play, comes opening night. The young guys and roster hopefuls got their time toward the end of the third and for all of the fourth, this time Zyon Pullin and Nassir Little getting run with Ware, Larsson and Josh Christopher. Not a ton of note from that group outside of one beautiful off-ball cut from Larsson – continuing to look like a most natural fit for Spoelstra’s offense – which later led into a separate cut along nearly the same sideline-to-rim trajectory that turned into game-winning free-throws. That group gave up some transition scores to New Orleans while the Pelicans ate into the double-digit lead for a clutch game that Miami took, 101-99. The passing of Isaiah Stevens had been the element making that group sing when it sang, particularly when it came to getting the ball to Ware in his ideal zones, and without him there was a little less natural flow while spacing and usage was sorted out on the fly. Ware did, however, get a post touch that ended in a dunk with a minute to play that temporarily put Miami up two and it’ll be interesting to see how much studio space Ware is afforded this season to explore his back-to-the-basket game. It is a rare 18-year-old who spends their first pay cheque on a print by the early modern Japanese painter Tsuguharu Foujita , but then, few people are like Alain Mallart. The French financier describes himself as ‘a mischievous and atypical lover of life’. It is a quality he shares with his wife, the vivacious Danute, a former actor from Lithuania, whom he met in Paris. ‘We are complete opposites,’ says Danute, ‘but what brought us together was a love of opera, literature and curiosity.’ Over the past 30 years, the couple have created a masterful collection of modern and contemporary art and design — one that draws its inspiration from a variety of sources, ranging from the operas of Wagner and Monteverdi to long summer nights on the Baltic coast. It is a surprising meeting of minds between two people who began life in very different circumstances: Alain in Paris, where he took refuge from his lonely childhood in the city’s art museums; and Danute in Cold War Lithuania, who discovered a love of photography and Constructivism while studying music at the Moscow Conservatory. The Mallarts’ collection is situated across three residences, in Brussels, Paris and Vilnius. Each is distinctive and in tune with its surroundings: the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, the grounds of La Cambre Abbey in Brussels, and the extraordinary biodiversity of Vilnius, one of Europe’s greenest cities. Leading the sale will be the Marlene Dumas painting Feathered Stola , dating from 2000, part of her ‘Strippinggirls’ series based on photographs of sex workers in Amsterdam. ‘It says it all,’ says Danute of the image. ‘She’s seductive, perverse, strong and innocent.’ Other works offered include a Georg Baselitz cowboy ; monumental textured paintings by Anselm Kiefer ; a vivid copper tableau by Robert Rauschenberg ; and an Infinity nets canvas by Yayoi Kusama . La France orange (1963) features a black-and-white photocopied portrait of the artist’s wife, France, sprayed green. France was born on Bastille Day and named after her country. The joyful artwork was previously owned by Georges Pompidou, president of France between 1969 and 1974, and became a popular symbol of 1960s Paris. The Brussels residence. This season in New York, the Collections online auction is led by the property from three Northeast collectors. Glenn C. Randall was regarded as one of the foremost furniture collectors and dealers of his generation in America. Residing in notable historic residences in Washington D.C. and Newport, Rhode Island, this selection showcases his discerning taste and keen eye, and features illustrious provenances. Among these are superb needlework wing armchairs from the Untermyer Collection and formerly in the Met Museum, a pair of George III settees with Regency needlework from Harewood House, and an impressive pair of granite urns formerly in the collection of Anthony de Rothschild. Considered one of the preeminent collections of Dutch Delftware in private hands, this group of ceramics from the collection of Peter van Slyke is composed of just over two dozen lots made in Holland in the 17th and 18th centuries. The selection contains exceptional pieces, including a rare puzzle jug and cover with commedia dell’arte figures, a figural tulip vase, a tankard with the arms of Augustus the Strong, and unusual forms. This auction includes the first installment of this wonderful collection. Dr Jeffrey Lant was a prominent member of Cambridge intelligentsia, author and news-media personality. Passionate about all things early-19th century, his collection was primarily assembled at auctions. This selection illustrates his particular interest in illustrious provenances, with robust offering of silver, clocks and decorative objects from the Empire and Directoire periods. Your Miami HEAT announced today that all current and future courts will bear a dedication in honor of former Head Coach and current Team President, Pat Riley. Set to enter his 30th season with the organization, Riley becomes just the second coach in NBA history to receive such an honor, joining Boston’s Red Auerbach. Since his arrival in Miami, he has engineered some of the biggest trades in the NBA, deals that have brought All-Stars Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Eddie Jones, Shaquille O’Neal, Shawn Marion, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Goran Dragić, Jimmy Butler, Kyle Lowry and others to the HEAT. Riley led the HEAT to six consecutive Playoff appearances from 1996 to 2001 and earning Coach of the Year honors in 1997. On December 12th, 2005—following a two-season coaching break—Riley resumed Head Coach duties to lead the HEAT to its first-ever Championship on June 20th, 2006 behind his iconic “15 STRONG” mantra. On April 28th, 2008, Riley shifted to a permanent front office role as Team President—a tenure tipped off in earnest with the 2010 offseason acquisitions of reigning league MVP LeBron James and perennial All-Star Chris Bosh to form the HEAT’s “Big Three” alongside franchise stalwart, Dwyane Wade. From 2010 to 2014, the HEAT made four consecutive NBA Finals appearances—including back-to-back Championships in 2012 and 2013—with Riley named the league’s Executive of the Year for 2010-11. In 2017, Riley made the first in a series of moves that comprise much of the HEAT’s current core, selecting Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro in the 2017 and 2019 NBA Drafts, respectively, then orchestrating a four-team trade to acquire All-Star Jimmy Butler on July 6th, 2019. On February 8th, 2022—one season removed from the HEAT’s sixth Finals appearance—Riley was recognized as one of the 15 Greatest Coaches in NBA History. In total, Riley’s resumé with the HEAT alone stands as one of the finest in NBA history: 5-time Coach of the Month, 1996-97 Coach of the Year, 2010-2011 Executive of the Year, and 3-time NBA Champion. Riley was enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on September 5th, 2008—his first season of eligibility. Riley and his wife Chris are also well-known philanthropists. Together, they founded The Miami HEAT Family Outreach in 1997 which has raised more than $30 million for the South Florida community and whose primary beneficiaries include Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Guardian Angels, which supports the Holtz Center for seriously ill children and SafeSpace, which is a domestic violence shelter for women and their children. They are also involved in the Pediatric AIDS Foundation’s Kids for Kids organization which they started in 1992 in New York, and the YMCA in Los Angeles, New York, and Miami. For more than 30 years, the Rileys have been actively involved with Boys and Girls Clubs of America. As a result of his efforts, Riley has received many prestigious awards, including the Miami Project Sports Legend Award in 1992, Boys and Girls Clubs Miami Person of the Year Award in 1998, and was honored by the YMCA Miami in 1998. After storms cancelled round two, four players secured their first FJT victories at Okeeheelee Golf Course. Okeeheelee provided a great test during the first round, but it was no match for Trey Farnsworth, Jose Carlos Lopez-Lay, Meyher Khokar & Sophia Christy. Boys (16-18) Being one of the first groups out, Trey Farnsworth set the tone early. Coming out of the gates scorching, Farnsworth eagled the first and never looked back. After a front nine 30, he got it to -7 through 11 holes, before eventually finishing at -5 (67). Farnsworth credited his great play with a newfound mindset of going out there care-free just trying to enjoy his round. Finishing in second place was Joey Iaciofano with a bogey free round of 68 and in third was Noah Hu with a round of 69. Hu’s round was highlighted by two eagles. Boys (13-15) Jose Carlos Lopez-Lay stole the show in the 13-15 Division with a bogey free round of 67. In his 8th FJT event of the year, Lopez Lay set a personal best round by five shots over his previous FJT low to secure his first victory. Birdieing two out of his first four gave him the cushion he needed to play stress free golf the rest of the way to win over Connor Danahy by five shots. Rounding out the podium was Ippei Igarashi with a score of +1 (73). Girls (16-18) Meyher Khokhar is a seasoned veteran on the Florida Junior Tour. Coming into this week, the only thing she was missing was her first win. After being the lone player under par out of both girls divisions, she was finally able to secure her first FJT victory with a score of -1 (71). In a tie for second place, Dariana Breto and Aliya Liberatore with scores of +1. Girls (13-15) In the Girls 13-15 Division, Sophia Christy was able to secure her first FJT victory with a score of even par. Coming out of the gates sluggish being two over par through her first 12, Christy finished strong playing her last six in -2. With a birdie on the last, Sophia Christy gave herself enough cushion to win by two shots over Keira Shavitranuruk, who fired a round of 74.
