- All Eyes on the 70th Golf Boys’ Junior Championship as It Tees Off
We’re gearing up to head to Ocala, Fla. as the 70th Boys’ Junior Championship swings into action from July 6th to 8th. The Championship will unfold across two courses, Club Adena and Glenview Country Club, promising three days of intense competition. In a new format starting in 2024, all players will compete from the same tee for the Overall Championship, playing 54 holes of stroke play to crown the 70th Boys’ Junior Champion. The tournament will still recognize both a Regular Age Division (16-18) Champion and the Junior Age Division (13-15) Champion. Last year, Colton Swartz fired rounds of 66-70-70 to claim victory in the (16-18) age division. Arth Sinha was victorious in the (13-15) age division carding rounds of 73-69-72. Swartz has moved on to collegiate golf at Florida Southern, leaving Sinha determined to defend his title after recent successes in national qualifiers. Sinah qualified for the 2024 Junior PGA Championship and recorded a second-place finish at this year’s FJT Riverwood Open (16-18), with rounds of 72-70. No stranger to the Boys’ Junior Championship is Shawn Coultoff, who clinched the Champion title at the 2022 Boys’ Junior. Coultoff has had some magnificent feats since, qualifying for the U.S. Open Final Qualifying this year, along with committing to Florida State University to play on the Men’s Golf team. Also among the talent are other Florida College commits, Parker Severs and Palmer Haynes. Severs is set to take the fairways for the University of Florida, ranked 98th on Junior Golf Scoreboard, and most recently being crowned Champion of this year’s FJT Stone Creek Open (16-18). Haynes signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the University of Central Florida Knights, starting with the 2024-25 season. Haynes was victorious at the FJT 12th Tour Championship in 2023, and most recently made the cut at the 107th Amateur Championship. Jessy Huebner, the highest-ranked junior golfer in the field, is set to tee it off at 9:09 A.M. off hole #1. Huebner, of Port St. Lucie, is ranked 59th overall on the Junior Golf Scoreboard. Clipper Salmon also has made a name for himself amidst the talented field. Salmon has a 2024 scoring average of 72.90 and made this apparent at his Amateur Championship debut. Salmon finished top 10 at 107th Amateur firing a 64 in the first round. Other notable players include Darren Zhou and Pavel Tsar. Zhou is the reigning Boys' Junior Player of the Year (2023), and finished one shot out of a play-off last year. He also clinched the 2024 Junior Orange Bowl Championship by two shots. Tsar is continuing his golf career at the University of Notre Dame. Among his other accomplishments includes qualifying for the 2024 U.S. Junior Championship. Keep an eye on the leaderboard and stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting 70th Boys’ Junior Championship. By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of FSGA. Top image by Matt Aylward/Unsplash
- Piaget Celebrates Its 150th Anniversary with A Virtuoso High Jewellery Collection
Maison Piaget celebrates its 150th anniversary with a virtuoso High Jewellery watch collection highlighting the extravagance and elegance of a unique style. Paying tribute to its incomparably masterful use of gold and colour, the watchmaking and jewellery Maison reinvents itself through some hundred bold, captivating pieces where the fluidity of cuff bracelets and necklaces and the radiance of the gemstones adorning them are magnified by the excellence of perfectly accomplished savoir-faire. Exalting the Piaget spirit To celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2024, Piaget rekindles its creative golden years of the 1960s and 1970s. “In 2022, when we began to design the 150 year anniversary collection,” recalls Stéphanie Sivrière, the Piaget jewellery and watch artistic director, “it wasn’t about identically reproducing heritage pieces, but rather taking inspiration from them. Revisiting those values of boldness, originality and elegance that characterize this Maison’s soul at the dawn of modernity.” Supported by the exceptional craftsmanship demonstrated at the Piaget High Jewellery workshops in Geneva, these 96 pieces are an invitation to celebrate that art of living – cheerful yet sophisticated, extravagant and colorful – which characterizes its jewellery creations. “Essence of Extraleganza” makes gold the subject and gemstones a true style element. It sets apart the women and men who will wear these pieces as free spirits seeking distinction. With a richness rarely achieved in terms of design, in the diversity of gemstones and range of designs, this 150th anniversary collection unveils its jewels in each of three emblematic Piaget realms: “Extraleganza”, “Piaget Society”, and “When mastery ignites artistry”. Emblematic realms Extraleganza - Named for its fusion of “extravagance” and “elegance”, this first chapter reveals the jeweller’s creative soul and avant-garde taste, adorned models set with exceptional stones in gold and light. The spectacular Swinging Sautoir in turquoise, malachite, and yellow sapphire – a signature Piaget piece since 1969 – is a perfect demonstration. Piaget Society - This second chapter celebrates the boldness of Piaget and its distinctive approach to jewellery. Here, richly coloured pieces make use of design and contract among gems to form a metaphor for the whirlwind life of those who wear them. When mastery ignites artistry - Under the combined influence of the Maison’s virtuosity in craftsmanship and the historical Piaget taste for the couture theme, this realm brings precious textures to gold while offering it a whole new fluidity. About Piaget Piaget epitomises daring creativity a quality that has continued to permeate through the Maison since its beginnings in 1874. From his first workshop in La Cote- aux- Fees, Georges-Edouard Piaget devoted himself to crafting high-precision movements in a feat that formed the very foundations of our pioneering name. In the late 1950s, Piaget unveiled the ultra-thin movements that would later become the Maison’s trademark and the cornerstone of the Altiplano collection. As a true innovator of the watch and jewellery world, Piaget strongly believed in creativity and artistic values. It is within the walls of our Ateliers de l’Extraordinaire where master artisans continue to harness rare skills that have been preserved and perfected from generation to generation, transforming gold, stones and precious gems into dazzling works of art. Through its pursuit of masterful craftsmanship, the Maison has created emblems of daring excellence channeled into its collections including Alt plano, Piaget Polo, Limelight Gala, Possession, Piaget Sunlight, Piaget Rose and Extremely Piaget. - Celebrating the Legacy of Ennio Fazioli: A Pioneer of Italian Design
Ennio Fazioli, a 94-year-old entrepreneur, continues to exude the charisma and enthusiasm that made him a respected figure in the world of design. Interestingly, Fazioli's influence has even reached Miami, where his iconic pieces are highly sought after by local collectors and design enthusiasts. Recognizing the value of his contributions to international design, Mr. Fazioli aims to celebrate the essence of "Made in Italy" through the release of exclusive patents signed by renowned Italian designers. These patents include original drawings and are intended for exhibitions, events, or potential sale, all in the interest of preserving Italian design's global presence. Celebrating over 70 years of creativity and innovation, Fazioli is set to release a historical archive of black-and-white images showcasing the events, products, and showrooms of MIM (Mobili Italiani Moderni). Founded by Fazioli in 1958 and closed in 2000, MIM has become a symbol of Italy's flourishing interior furniture industry. Since the 1960s, Fazioli has collaborated with illustrious designers such as Gio Ponti, Luigi Pellegrin, Vittorio Gregotti, Carlo Scarpa, Renato Venturi, Giuseppe Zammerini, Ico Parisi, Bruno Munari, and Ettore Sottsass, contributing to the creation of iconic design pieces. An ambassador of 100% Italian production, Ennio Fazioli represents the DNA of his brand in a global context where Italian quality holds strong appeal. He offers his extensive experience as a witness and leading protagonist of design, available for interviews, panels, conferences, and workshops that celebrate the history of Italian design. Fazioli is one of the few remaining figures able to narrate the birth of "Made in Italy" design through personal anecdotes and real-life stories. Fazioli's contributions are significant in promoting and protecting the "Made in Italy" brand, a source of global pride. The history of MIM has been characterized by its commitment to the entire furniture production cycle—from conception to distribution—thanks to Fazioli's foresight and creative flair. The historic shop in Piazza Augusto Imperatore in Rome, opened in 1964 with a project by Luigi Pellegrin, still bears the original sign designed by Bruno Munari in 1960. This shop has interpreted the trends, tastes, and lifestyle of an Italy that, during its economic boom, aspired to modernity, elegance, and international recognition. With the opening of showrooms in Paris, Brussels, and Antwerp, and hopefully one eventually in Miami, Fazioli gave a global dimension to his products by exporting them to England and the United States in the early 1980s. Since then, MIM furniture has become a timeless 'must-have,' maintaining vibrant interest among international collectors. Learn More Interested parties seeking more information regarding the opportunity to purchase MIM's products, patents, and all historical documentation of the brand, including original drawings and an extensive photographic archive, are invited to request further details by sending an email to publicrelations@allaboutitaly.net . - Sophia Dyer Emerges as 95th Women’s Golf Amateur Champion in Dramatic Fashion
Sophia Dyer emerged as the 95th Women’s Amateur Champion in dramatic fashion. The Team Florida member found herself in a seemingly insurmountable hole, in which escaping appeared unlikely. Dyer started the championship match against One Kashima and things were not exactly going as planned for Dyer. Kashima drilled a birdie putt into the center of the cup on the sixth hole to go four up on Dyer and then stepped up to the tee of the seventh hole, a par 3, and stuck it to about 7 feet. Despite the circumstances, Dyer calmly teed her ball up next and took a few smooth practice swings before winding back and striking her ball to about four feet. She sank her birdie putt while Kashima made a par, and slowly Dyer began to chisel away at the lead Kashima had over her. Fast forward to another win on the 12th hole for Dyer and the pair were tied for the first time. Suddenly, we had a match on our hands and the trophy could belong to either one of these two talented players. However, it was on the 16th hole where Dyer took the lead for the first time with only two holes left to play. The pair each made par on the 17th and headed to the last hole with Dyer one up on Kashima. A birdie on the final hole sealed the deal for Dyer as she went from a four-hole deficit to defeating her opponent two up. It was a win for the FSGA history books, and Dyer described it as, “Without a doubt, one of my most memorable wins. It made it even more special that I started out 4 down through 6, but I feel like I proved to myself and everyone else how strong I am mentally. All the work that I have put in with my mental coach has really paid off.” Dyer further explained, “It’s all about staying in the process and just staying patient.” A memorable win was only fitting for the 95th Women’s Amateur Championship. It was a special year for the tournament and such a treat to have the Bear’s Club host. Dyer explained how it felt to compete at the Bear’s Club, “It was really special. I mean, that course is just unbelievable and it was so fun. It was really a test for everyone’s game in every way. We’re all just really lucky to play on a course of that caliber.” Dyer even stated, “All throughout the practice round I just kept saying over and over, gosh I love this tournament.” With this win, Dyer also earned an exemption into the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship which takes place in August at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dyer competed last year in the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Bel-Air Country Club and she missed the cut by one stroke. She said, “It was amazing playing the U.S. Women’s Am last year. Even though I missed by one, it really fueled me to want it even more this year and now I am really excited to go back.” Dyer explains that playing in FSGA events has helped her to feel comfortable on the national stage. “All the Florida players are so lucky to play for the FSGA. The competition is so elite and all the tournaments are so well run that it helps me to feel comfortable moving up because I feel so prepared.” Yet, the U.S. Women’s Amateur championship will not be Dyer’s only USGA appearance for the 2024 season. The St. Petersburg native qualified for the U.S. Girls’ Junior the day after winning the Women’s Amateur. She described that she was still on a mental high from her win, but physically she was exhausted. It was a challenging 18 holes, but she pulled through to secure a spot in her second USGA championship for the season. Dyer explained that she had her best friend and fellow Team Florida member, Bella Dovhey, caddying for her at the qualifier which helped her get through the round. Dyer earned a spot on Team Florida for the second consecutive year. Team Florida is an awards program that identifies the top 40 junior golfers from around the state. The competitors that make up this team not only show a remarkable talent for golf, but demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship and etiquette for the game. Dyer spoke about her time as a Team Florida member, “I love it. Some of my best friends are on that team and we really just feel like a family. It’s great to have that group around at all the tournaments. We’re just treated so well on the team and it’s so awesome to be a part of.” It is rewarding to see the members of Team Florida helping each other out at tournaments and cheering one another on even though they still compete with and against each other. The FSGA obviously provides many competitions for players at each level of journey, however it is the community aspect that is sometimes hard to achieve when competing. Yet, amongst other things, Team Florida helps to bridge the gap. Dyer said, “Bella and I were just having fun at the Girls’ Junior qualifier. She kind of distracted me which allowed me to just play golf.” Dyer, who started playing at 8 years old, explains that she comes from a golfing family. Her older brother, Blake, played at the University of Florida following in the footsteps of their father who also played golf at the University of Florida. Her parents were with her during the Women’s Amateur and had the pleasure of watching her capture the win on Father’s Day. Dyer said, “It was all so amazing. My dad is my number one fan and it was just so special to get the win for him on Father’s Day.” It certainly was a remarkable victory, perfectly befitting for the 95th year of the illustrious championship. Golf is such a unique sport where one of the greatest challenges lies in balancing the precision of control with the unpredictable nature of the game. Dyer understands the challenge as she left with these parting words about her victory and the game of golf, “Golf is just such a hard sport. You can’t force anything. And you really just have to stay in your process and control the things you can control. Then, whatever happens over that ball, you just have to accept it because you can’t control it if you make a good swing, or get a bad bounce. It really is just about accepting what happens and then deciding what you can do next.” By ML Staff. Content/Image courtesy of FSGA
- Meet Marcus Lynch, USST High Performance Director
US Sailing welcomed Marcus Lynch in January 2024 as the US Sailing Team’s High Performance Director. He’s tasked with leading the US Sailing Team and all its associated high‐performance programs, including the US Olympic Sailing Team, the Pan American Sailing Team, and the Olympic Development Sailing Program. And with only six months in the role before his first Olympics with Team USA, we sat down with Marcus to learn more about what drew him here after his experience with the British and German programs and what his vision is for Paris and Los Angeles. Watch the interview video Transcribed interview: What is your personal sailing background? I got into sailing at a young age in lots of different boats back home in the UK. I sort of funneled that energy and fun into the laser radial for my youth sailing before transitioning into multihulls as I got older. What is your professional sailing background? Some really fond memories from my career so far… I’ll probably start with securing two bronze medals, one in London one in Rio, with the British Sailing Team and the Paralympic sailors. Then moving on to a fantastic journey with the Nacra sailors in Germany to secure a bronze medal in the Tokyo Games. Completely out of the Olympic world, I had a fantastic experience working with the Extreme Sailing Series Team Oman Air and then recently before joining the US Sailing Team was privileged enough to spend a few regattas coaching with the Canadian SailGP Team. Why the American Team? I’m really excited to have joined the US Sailing Team in my role, I see a huge amount of potential with the athletes that are currently involved. I’m also very excited to be involved a home Olympic Games having experienced that for London 2012 with the British team. What is your vision for the Team? So my vision for the Team is to create a culture which breeds professionalism, fun, collaboration in sailors- that they’re intrigued to learn more and leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of performance. And if all those things can come together that we end up getting the results that the sailors deserve and that the Team is striving to achieve. You’re coming into the Team very late in the cycle- what is your plan for Paris? It’s challenging parachuting into the team so late in this Olympic cycle but I have a goal and a vision that I can add value to each of the athletes’ performances through the Olympics. I aim to do that by creating an environment where they can focus on their daily goals, they can focus on their processes, and they don’t have to worry about anything else. I think that we’ve got a wide range of experience on Team USA that will be competing in Paris this summer. We’ve got some first time Olympic athletes and some having another bite of the cherry. I’m really excited to see if we can maximize their potential and see them fulfill their dreams this summer. What’s your outlook on Los Angeles 2028? I think having a home Games in LA is a really exciting opportunity and I think that over the next four years we have a fantastic environment within which we have to explore, we have to learn. We’re looking to build depth of talent across our sailing team through the different disciplines- I see a group of athletes with a huge amount of potential and I see a home Games in a couple of years time which is something that I’m really excited about having experienced the Paralympics in London and being part of the British Sailing Team in 2012. I’ve seen that getting the local community and getting the nation behind you is a really motivating thing. What is your favorite non-Olympic boat? The 18 foot skiff. I’ve had a few experiences in that class over my time in the sport and a very good mix between swimming and sailing. What is your order at a French bakery? A mix of pain au chocolat, croissants, and café crème. If you weren’t working in sailing professionally, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t working in the marine industry in sailing, I think that I probably would have chosen a career in carpentry or something creative like that. Something completely different. What do you do in your free time? My favorite thing to do in my free time is spend time with my family. I have my wife, Kirsty, my eldest daughter, Cara, and my youngest daughter, Skye. And a cat called – it’s debatable – the children call him Claws, we adopted him, I call him Jeff. But I try to educate my children in the ways of the world of sailing to various degrees of success. Do you have a motto? I heard a long time ago someone say “If not now, then when? And if not you, then who?” and it’s something that’s stuck with me and contributed towards my work ethic and my approach to daily life. Closing thoughts? The Olympics is around the corner, I’m very much looking forward to it and I hope all of you in the USA are, too. I have one request which is that you cheer so loud that we can hear you from France.
