- Coalition to Empower our Future Hosts Crucial Youth Mental Health Roundtable in Miami
This fall, Miami will host an important community conversation on one of the most pressing issues of our time: youth mental health. On Wednesday, October 8, the Coalition to Empower our Future (CEF) will convene a high-level roundtable at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, bringing together national experts, local advocates and regional leaders for a frank discussion about the challenges facing young people and the solutions needed to support them. Moderated by former U.S. Congressman Carlos Curbelo , a CEF board member, alongside CEF Executive Director Glen Weiner , the event aims to shed light on the complex drivers behind declining mental health in youth — from access to care, to family pressures, to the impact of technology — and to emphasize that no single solution will suffice. A Timely Conversation The roundtable comes just two days before World Mental Health Day on October 10, adding urgency and relevance to the dialogue. Recent CEF research shows that 80% of Florida voters and parents believe youth mental health requires a multi-layered response, not one-size-fits-all approaches, while nearly seven in ten say young people have difficulty accessing support. These insights frame the need for gatherings like this, where diverse voices can exchange ideas and spark collaboration. Who Will Be At The Table Participants include respected figures from across the spectrum of youth services, mental health care and education. Confirmed speakers and panelists include: Nicole Owings-Fonner , American Academy of Pediatrics National Center on Social Media and Youth Mental Health Karina Pavone , President & CEO of Amigos for Kids Debra Albo-Steiger , CEO of the Children’s Bereavement Center Carson Domey , Executive Director of the Coalition for Student Wellbeing Dr. Howard Pratt , Behavioral Health Medical Director at Community Health of South Florida Marni Stahlman , CEO of the Mental Health Association of Central Florida Rhea Lee , Executive Director of Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Office of Mental Health Services Together with Congressman Curbelo and Glen Weiner, these leaders will address the root causes and ripple effects of the crisis — and highlight programs and initiatives that are working to make a difference in the lives of young people. Event Details The roundtable takes place at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Plaza Ballroom (3300 SW 27th Ave, Miami, FL 33133) . Media availability with Congressman Curbelo and Glen Weiner begins at 9:45 a.m. , followed by the main event from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required by 8:00 a.m. on October 8 at press@empowerourfuturecoalition.com . About the Coalition The Coalition to Empower our Future brings together a wide range of voices to help inform comprehensive, inclusive solutions that empower youth, families, and communities. Led by a board that includes former Montana Governor Steve Bullock , former U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo , and former HHS official January Contreras , along with clinical advisor Dr. Caroline Carney , the coalition is committed to advancing strategies that reflect the full spectrum of factors shaping youth well-being. - Luxury Island Getaway: Recharge & Rest
It’s not a surprise how Dawn Beach got its name. Facing the eastern side of St. Maarten, makes it the perfect location for the most spectacular sunrises. It’s the best way to wake up. Here, lives the majestic JW Marriot Resort & Spa. This oceanfront resort is located amongst beautiful calm and pristine waters, white sandy beaches, and a lush of greenery—it’s a very short flight from Miami, but it feels like a different world. Wake up with picture perfect sunrises, feel secluded yet still with all the amenities at your fingertips— this is the magic the JW Marriott brings; it’s the best of both worlds. Relaxation is a priority, and the JW Marriott has all the tools to make it happen. After enjoying from a delicious breakfast, spend the day lounging by the pool (maybe take an aquatics class), or dive right into the warm Caribbean waters and feel the sand on your toes. Make it a spa day or explore the island—the concierge at the front desk is always ready to help. There is so much to do, so leave your problems at home and get ready to disconnect. Recreation & Fitness The infinity swimming pool at the JW Marriott does not disappoint. This is the perfect place to relax, and you can even see the ocean from it. There is a plethora of lounge chairs with umbrellas, so guests don’t have to feel obligated to wake up early to reserve one. Simply head down when you’re ready. There are also beach cabanas that accommodate at least two people—it’s very romantic and comfortable. The staff by the pool is always friendly and ready to take your order—weather it’s drinks or a snack, they will bring it to you. Finally, a resort pool could not be complete without a swim up bar. The pool is divided into two sections, and in the lower section guests can swim and get their beverages without leaving the pool. Talk about a dreamy vacation! There is also a fitness facility where guests will find the latest exercise equipment. The gym area is located pass the main lobby, and it’s very accessible. It’s very clean and not crowded. Next to the gym there is a children’s center where parents can drop off their kids (for example to enjoy a couple’s massage). Here a staff member will play with your kids and keep them safe while you enjoy some alone time. In the same part of the resort, you will also find a large conference room, a store to buy souvenirs and other necessities, as well as a café to grab a quick bite. Finally, there is also a Cooking School where guests can sign up to take a variety of classes during their stay. These are fun and educational hands-on cooking classes, taught by passionate staff. You can learn to prepare local dishes or new tasty cocktails. It’s a great way to spend the afternoon. Suites & Guest Rooms The accommodations at the JW are everything you would expect from a new resort. Sharp design, clean atmosphere, all with the Caribbean hospitality. Upon check-in guests will get a bracelet keycard, which unlocks the guest rooms. Before heading to your room, take a moment to admire the lobby (maybe grab a drink at the bar), it’s stunning; with tall ceilings, comfortable seating, and warm plant décor, this is where the luxury stay begins. The guest rooms at the JW are very modern, stylish, spacious and with all the expected amenities—smart TV, mini fridge, etc. Adorned with a variety of beige tones that reflect the classic JW brand, when guests walk in, they recognize it and feel comfortable. All the rooms have a balcony where guests can enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking views. The balconies come equipped with comfortable seating and a table—just what you need to enjoy it. Whether you have an ocean view or resort view, there is always something interesting to be looking at—stargazing is my favorite activity. Looking for a little extra? The deluxe rooms come with a little private plunge pool open 24/7 just when you need it most. There is also a suite that has an exceptional balcony that wraps around the entirety of it, this space has two rooms—perfect for a family wanting to create multiple spaces. Finally, the contemporary design is emphasized in the bathrooms—make sure to carve time to indulge and relax in the freestanding bathtub which adds elegance to the entire experience. Dining There are two main restaurants guests can dine at. Carambola offers a buffet and a la carte menus for breakfast. With indoor and outdoor seating, this is the perfect way to begin your journey in St. Maarten. After a smooth check-in, get a tropical handmade cocktail and familiar bites like the boom-boom shrimp tacos, the sxm burger with a side of fries, or the traditional conch fritters for lunch. The breakfast at Carambola is delightful. The buffet offers a wide selection of pastries, warm food like sausage, bacon, eggs, and beverages like detox smoothies, juice/coffee to start your day right. If you are looking for smaller portions, the a la carte menu offers traditional breakfast plates. If you decide to eat at one of the day beds or cabana by the pool instead, you can order the same food there! But you will notice the restaurant name is Breeze , but don’t worry, this poolside restaurant serves the same menu as Carambola. For those looking for a romantic or a special dinner to celebrate, Liguria is the perfect spot. This restaurant offers fine mediterranean dining. With indoor and outdoor seating, the staff here is exceptionally attentive. The menu features fresh vegetables, seafood, a delicious short rib with a side of risotto, mouthwatering wagyu, and favorites like tuna tartare. Here presentation matters. Every dish is beautifully presented. And for dessert, you can’t go wrong with the pannacotta or the three layer chocolate mousse cake. Spa A vacation cannot be complete without a proper spa treatment. The JW offers a full-service spa located onsite with a selection of massages, body treatments, and skin care services. Upon check-in, guests will be taken to the changing rooms before proceeding to the relaxation room where your therapist will meet you. In this space you will find dim lighting, cucumber water, and reclining chairs to accomplish maximum relaxation. It’s incredibly peaceful. Traveling Comfortably Before you head out on your picture-perfect vacation, there are a couple items you will want to consider bringing with you. There are a variety of activities one can do in St. Maarten, from horseback riding to a hiking tour of Guana-Bay, or maybe an ATV tour or a day in St. Barts, how about a zipline down the Flying Dutchman. Regardless of what type of thrill you are seeking it’s important to do it comfortably. Cotopaxi has not let me down on my vacations. They have a wide selection of bags, and I’ve found the Allpa 35L is the ideal size to bring on board and even on a day trip. The ergonomic design and comfortable straps make this bag a travel essential. Their apparel is also Caribbean friendly, the Brinco shorts are ideal for hiking and swimming. Duer is another must-have when on vacation, their no-sweat shorts and pants are engineered to deliver ultimate comfort and street-ready style. Their collection embodies elegance. Even just their PurePima t-shirt is totally acceptable wardrobe selection for dinner, and it pairs up really nicely with the Journey shorts , making it easy to transition from day to night activities. If you’re looking for comfort and style, Duer is the way to go. Ready to getaway to a secluded paradise? The visit begins by tracing the history of perfume through the Dior archives, with photographs and heritage objects and materials, followed by a poetic immersion in an indoor garden created by artist Eva Jospin. Further on, an olfactory installation envelops visitors in the key notes of the fragrance alongside a sculptural floral robe. The colorful Sixties room then revives the modern style of the House’s first ready-to-wear collection, which embodied the couturier’s dream of dressing all women. The exhibition culminates with a compelling dialogue between haute couture and contemporary art, with exceptional dresses worn by Natalie Portman in Miss Dior campaigns shown alongside works by internationally-renowned women contemporary artists. They include six major Chinese artists— Ai Jing, Chen Ke, Liu Shiyuan, Zhou Li, Liang Yuanwei and Daishi Luo — who reveal their original creations, some displayed for the first time. The personality of Catherine Dior, an eternal muse for the House and figure of the French Resistance, is an omnipresent inspiration throughout the exhibition. ML Staff. - Why Personal Wellness Matters in Medical Crises
In hospitals across the country, burnout isn’t a buzzword. It’s a background condition. It’s what happens when the system demands that healthcare workers always show up, no matter how much they’ve been stretched, or how little they’ve had to recover. But here’s the irony—wellness is not some bonus perk for people in medicine. It’s a requirement for doing the job right. Image by Andrea Piacquadio / Pexels In this blog, we will share why personal wellness is critical in crisis-driven healthcare settings, how society is finally paying attention, and how future professionals are being trained to handle both the emergencies they face and the toll those emergencies take. The Strongest Are Not the Most Exhausted You can’t think clearly if you’re exhausted, and in high-stakes healthcare that clarity saves lives. Yet the industry still glorifies long shifts, skipped meals, and burnout as badges of honor—a culture that’s not just outdated but dangerous. In the last few years, COVID-19 put this issue on full display. Nurses reported record levels of burnout. Emergency departments were overwhelmed not just by patients, but by the emotional weight of watching so many people suffer. According to the National Academy of Medicine, more than half of healthcare workers report symptoms of burnout. And those numbers aren’t getting better on their own. Healthcare workers who are well-rested and emotionally supported make better decisions. They communicate more effectively. They catch mistakes before they happen. In short, they’re the ones you want in the room when everything goes wrong. That’s why conversations about wellness are now showing up in unexpected places—inside course syllabi, hospital break rooms, and, importantly, in career-focused degree programs. For example, students enrolled in an online health science degree learn not just how to treat others, but how to sustain themselves in demanding environments. These programs prepare future professionals for roles that blend care delivery with coordination, leadership, and crisis response. At Northern Kentucky University, for instance, students are taught to combine practical knowledge with human-focused insight. They explore topics like chronic disease management, cultural awareness in care, and even health informatics—all while building the self-awareness and emotional tools needed to function in real-world healthcare settings. And because the program is 100% online, many learners can apply what they’re studying to their current jobs without missing a beat. What Wellness Really Looks Like in the Field Wellness in medicine isn’t about yoga in the staff lounge or a monthly email about mental health tips. It’s about systems that make it possible for people to do the work without falling apart. That means real breaks. Coverage when someone is overwhelmed. Access to counseling services that don’t require a dozen forms and a six-week wait. It also means training leaders to notice the signs before burnout gets out of hand. Let’s take an example. Imagine a respiratory therapist who’s worked five shifts in a row. She’s running on caffeine and adrenaline. During a hectic night, she misreads a medication dosage. It’s caught in time, but barely. Now imagine she’d had proper rest, a team that shared the load, and a supervisor who saw the signs early. The crisis may never have happened. Wellness, in this case, is the difference between a close call and a fatal mistake. But it’s not just about preventing the worst. It’s also about improving the day-to-day. Healthcare workers who are supported and well tend to stay in their jobs longer . They create safer environments. They build stronger relationships with patients. They’re not just surviving—they’re contributing. Rewriting the Rules of Readiness There’s a growing shift in how we define what it means to be “prepared” in healthcare. It’s not just about mastering protocols or memorizing emergency codes. It’s about being able to regulate your own nervous system when someone else’s is crashing. That level of control doesn’t come from textbooks. It comes from training that treats wellness as part of professional skill. And yes, there’s still resistance. Some people think wellness is too soft a word for a hard world. But the truth is, personal stability under pressure is one of the most powerful tools in a crisis. You don’t want someone who can only function when things are calm. You want someone who stays calm when things aren’t . Programs that emphasize holistic learning are catching on. They teach students that their mental and emotional fitness matters just as much as their technical knowledge. They show future professionals how to advocate for themselves, manage stress, and lead with clarity—even when everything is falling apart around them. That kind of education doesn’t just prepare someone for a job. It prepares them for the moments when a life might depend on their ability to stay steady, focused, and alert. So when we talk about the calm before the code, we’re not talking about the quiet before chaos. We’re talking about the person who walks into the room ready—not because they’re fearless, but because they’ve taken care of themselves enough to show up fully. That’s what real readiness looks like. And in modern healthcare, it’s long overdue. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Pexels
- Weed: A Cultural Evolution into Modern Lifestyles
Weed has been intertwined for many decades with cultural movements, artistic expression, and even culinary innovation. It is noticed in art galleries, music festivals, and design. This shows an evolving relationship that the plant has with human creativity. As changes in societal attitudes are in the air, cannabis comes across more as a substance but also as a symbol of freedom, wellness, and individuality. Another interesting aspect of the change is how one online shop started to gain more and more popularity due to the increasing popularity of weed seeds: FastBuds . For its top-quality cannabis seeds, FastBuds has gained a certain prominence among amateurs seeking stable options to raise plants that don't require much maintenance. The Rise of Autoflower Seeds within Cannabis Culture Autoflower seeds were the beginning of the revolution in how people think about growing cannabis. While the original seeds need to flower with light cycles, the autoflower varieties are genetically modified, flowering with age instead. The innovation has enabled novice growers and experienced cultivators to enjoy a hassle-free growth experience. Whether you're an artist looking to experiment with inspiration or a tech enthusiast interested in how cannabis fits into modern wellness trends, autoflower seeds are increasingly the starting point for creative and personal exploration. Cannabis in the World of Art and Design Weed has had a serious influence on the art world, inspiring some of the most iconic art pieces and movements. From the abstract works that altered states inspired to sleek modern designs in cannabis accessories, the plant shaped everything, from aesthetics to creative processes. Today, cannabis culture and high art blend in the expression of exhibitions that celebrate the history of the plant. From immersive installations 一 often featuring living plants 一 galleries, and cultural festivals, cannabis-themed pieces are popping up everywhere. Cannabis Meets the Plate: A Culinary Adventure The infusion of cannabis into gourmet cuisine has brought a new dimension to the culinary arts. Chefs in progressive cities are starting to push boundaries with cannabis oils, infused butter, and even flower garnishes to make their offerings that much better. They are not just about intoxication; the creations are meant to bring out earthly flavors and aromatic profiles from the plant. Cannabis dinners and tastings have joined the ranks of the staples in the food world, entertaining guests with novel sensory experiences. Combined with a glass of fine wine or craft cocktails, these meals launch cannabis into the centerpiece of high-class socializing. Music and Cannabis: A Timeless Bond From reggae and jazz to hip-hop and electronic, cannabis has been associated with innovative genres of music for decades. Many artists report that cannabis enhances creativity, allowing them to experiment with new sounds and innovate. Music festivals around the world have given way 一 if not encouragement 一 to cannabis consumption as part of the experience. Many events will have areas on-site specifically for cannabis consumption and vendors related to the cannabis trade. This says a lot about how cannabis is slowly being normalized into mainstream events. Fashion and Cannabis: A Stylish Union The fashion industry also takes advantage of the cannabis movement. From the use of sustainable hemp fibers for clothing lines to bold graphic designs with cannabis motifs, the plant finds its place in high fashion and streetwear. Brands use cannabis across the board as a symbol of rebellion, individuality, and eco-conscious living to appeal to an incredibly broad audience. Cannabis-inspired collections pop up at fashion shows, sending ripples through both alternative and mainstream markets. Technology and Cannabis: A High-Tech Partnership The crossover between cannabis and technology is rewriting the rules in the industry. From apps that can monitor plant growth to devices capable of precision dosing for medical purposes, innovation has paved the way for cannabis to become more available and user-friendly. The more tech-savvy are even using AI to help optimize growth cycles for autoflower seeds. Such a partnership between cannabis and technology underlines how the plant has risen to the demands of modern life. Sports and Wellness: Cannabis as Recovery But cannabis is also making waves in the world of sports. Recovering, maintaining pain, and focusing 一 better with the help of CBD and THC products 一 are what athletes are using today. And that is breaking stereotypes that anyone who consumes cannabis is incapable of living a healthy, active lifestyle. Injections of cannabis into fitness routines are no longer taboo but celebrated, even, as a tool for balance and relaxation. This is not dissimilar to the wider acceptance of multi-face uses of the plant. Conclusion No longer is cannabis a sort of sideshow freak appeal. It has become a powerful symbol interwoven through the fabrics of art, food, music, fashion, and technology. The versatility of the plant easily adapts to and flourishes in various cultural contexts 一 from inspiring artists and driving technological advancement. With the rise of autoflower seeds and other growing stores such as FastBuds, cannabis culture has never been more accessible. This is merely the beginning of a movement where this plant will be irrevocably part of modern lifestyle and current cultural happenings, moving toward that future wherein this simple weed is celebrated to full capacity, in fact.
