- Gucci Introduces 10KTF: A Digital Vault Project
A crystal ball heralds its arrival. Mysterious and fascinating, the magical globe is the gift the digital avatar of Alessandro Michele, Gucci's Creative Director, offers Wagmi-san, world renowned digital artisan who has invited the designer -- already on a journey towards new paradigms and forms of creativity-- to his virtual shop in New Tokyo. We cannot resist using the lexicon of fairy tales to describe ‘10KTF Gucci Grail’, the new initiative happening in Vault’s experimental space. In collaboration with digital accessory shop 10KTF, Gucci has created ad hoc digital outfits designed by Alessandro Michele and created by Wagmi-san to dress PFPs from eleven selected NFT collections including Bored Ape, World of Women, Cool Cats and many others. The “PFP” acronym stands for ‘Picture For Proof’, a NFT version of a profile photo, used by collectors both as their portrait and as extreme expressions of artistic and technological talent. The encounter between Wagmi-san and Alessandro Michele generates two custom Gucci looks, available in different colors, inspired respectively by the Aria and Love Parade collections, for those who aspire to express their individuality through fashion in the parallel digital worlds. The House is already present in the realm of NFTs, the 'Non-Fungible Tokens' that have transformed our experience of art, sublimating it into immaterial digital works. Acquiring personalised virtual garments also involves several steps, not unlike the actual process of securing a designer creation (which requires several fittings). Over the past few days, the crystal ball has been accessible to three groups of people – those who already own a PFP; those who are members of the Gucci Vault community on the Discord server, and those who already ‘inhabit’ New Tokyo, where artisan Wagmi-san lives. Those who redeemed their crystal ball were able to choose between the different Gucci looks artfully tailored by Wagmi-san and receive their customized digital avatar. With only a limited number of users involved, this project has the feel of a unique work: “10KTF Gucci Grail” not only highlights the individuality of each person, but it also unveils the huge, spectacular potential of virtual realities, enabling us to design a digital identity in an alternative world. To be dressed for the metaverse is to have another self that Vault allows us to generate through the codes of Gucci. Discover more about Gucci at www.gucci.com. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Gucci

NEW EXHIBITION Tree Huggers and Nests: The Art of Evelyn Politzer April 13 – May 29 More than a cultural event, this exhibition is a call to action showing the need to defend and create measures to protect the planet’s natural reserves, particularly the Everglades in Florida. Evelyn Politzer’s work pays an homage to the Everglades. The use of organic materials produces changes or mutations, that gradually blend within nature, making the viewer aware of the beauty of our environment. Both exhibitions take place outdoors in the Garden. In assembling the tree branches for the nests and drawing together lines of threads and wool, Evelyn, like a storyteller, creates a narrative of disappearance and survival. Each Nest tells the story of an endangered bird, and each Tree Hugger is a call for unity, action and transformation. The use of colors, form, space, as well as the use of various materials in the work of Evelyn Politzer, shows how fully aware the artist is of art’s social responsibility. Preservation is the only way to recover what is still left, therefore the artist offers us an ethical reflection and a utopian model about the possibilities of dialogue between humans and nature. NEW EXHIBITION Native Orchids of South Florida: The Photography of Drew Mullin April 19 – May 29 Florida is home to 106 native species of orchids, of which 77 are considered either endangered or threatened by the State of Florida due to habitat destruction and poaching. This exhibition by the Garden's Orchid Specialist and Photographer Drew Mullin is a collection of photos taken in various parts of the everglades over the last 15 years, and brings awareness to these threatened orchids by showcasing their beauty in their natural habitat. In celebration of Earth Month, the Garden is delighted to host such a meaningful and optimistic survey through photographs that are works of art on their own. A Look Back at the First Earth Day By Kaveri Marathe, Green Your Scene contributor Today it’s the largest secular civic event in the world but it all started with one pioneering senator from Wisconsin in 1970. We’re talking about Earth Day. Celebrated every April 22 (Miami Beach Botanical Garden will host its annual celebration on April 21) Earth Day began as a call to action to stop the degradation of our water, air, and land. Elected in 1962, Senator Gaylord Nelson had a deep love of nature, having grown up along the pristine waters of Clear Lake, Wisconsin. But by the late 1960s, he found that his constituents were frustrated with underfunded green spaces and growing pollution. Throughout the 60s, major environmental disasters across the country, such as the burning of the Cuyahoga River in Ohio, an oil spill in Santa Barbara (still the third largest in U.S. history) and several nuclear disasters, were raising environmental awareness generally. The decade also saw a reaction to citizens’ growing concern with the founding of the World Wildlife Fund, Environmental Defense Fund and the publication of Silent Spring. But while much of the reaction over the decade was citizen-led, little action had been taken on the federal level to conserve nature or protect the environment. Inspired by the sit-ins during the Vietnam War, Senator Nelson conceived of Earth Day as an event to galvanize youth on college campuses across the country to take up the environmental movement and drive more lasting change. Little did he know just how successful his event would be. Held on April 22, 1970 – a day chosen to maximize student attendance on campuses – the first Earth Day saw rallies in cities across the U.S., from Los Angeles to New York with thousands of attendees nationwide. The event has remained highly successful, expanding globally in the 1990s. Earth Day’s true success has been not only raising awareness and bringing people together around the environmental movement, it has also led those citizens to demand legislation for lasting environmental protection. By the end of 1970, President Richard Nixon had signed an executive order creating the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA. By the end of the decade, more than 20 environmental laws were signed by Congress, including the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. As we again find ourselves facing daunting environmental issues around the world, it helps to remember that when we come together, we can find solutions to even our greatest challenges. And it all starts with one person – maybe it’s you! - Ayurveda Florida: Ancient Alternative Treatments in Miami
Miles from beach breezes, amid the jangle of Miami traffic and office complexes, an oasis of calm beckons visitors to an Ayurveda Florida experience beyond the temporary relief brought by a day stretched on white sand or inside a spa. At Sai Ayurvedic College and Ayurvedic Wellness Center, clients enter an office on the second floor of a medical building. Inside, a hush greets them in the small lobby full of cushioned rattan sofas. Colorful Indian tapestries grace the walls, and a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh greets them as they move further inside. They arrive with ailments that include everything from diabetes to arthritis to gastrointestinal disturbances. Many are seeking an alternative path to better health, sometimes following an unsatisfying trip to a regular medical practitioner and dissatisfaction with prescription drugs and their side effects. Recommendations at Sai Ayurvedic College will more likely include detoxification procedures and massages, eye baths, the application of medicated oils and powders to the nasal passages, herbal and clinical nutritional protocols, and exercise recommendations in line with one’s personal makeup, or dosha. “We suggest measures of recovery that promote optimal levels of health,” says William Courson, the dean of academic affairs and institutional development and one of several practitioners and teachers at the college and center. As yoga has exploded in popularity in mainstream Western society in recent years, so, too, is its sister practice of Ayurveda rising in familiarity – helped, in part, by the writings of Deepak Chopra and features on “The Dr. Oz Show.” Dating back to India around 5,000 years or more, Ayurveda – which means “science of life” in the ancient language of Sanskrit – is a holistic preventive medicine and healing system that focuses on individuals’ mind, body and spirit. The Ayurveda Florida center was started in 2006 by former banker Cookie Tello after her doctors couldn’t fix her frustrating sciatic problem. The experience set her on course to take up a new profession, studying Ayurveda for two years in Seattle and a month in India before returning to South Florida, where she opened the region’s first Ayurvedic center and college. Certified by the National Ayurvedic Medical Association, it is now one of several centers throughout the state. While practitioners don’t reject all prescription drugs and other forms of Western medicine, according to Courson, they go beyond its preoccupation with disease management and instead focus on the underlying root of a person’s lifestyle imbalances or stressors. It is those imbalances that typically manifest themselves in the body in the form of pain or illness, he adds. “I let them do the talking,” Courson says of clients. “I get the impression very often that I’m the first health care practitioner who’s allowed them to tell their story.” To determine his course of treatment for clients during a one-hour consultation, Courson observes them the moment they walk through the door in order to assess their dominant dosha. The three doshas of Ayurveda – vata, pitta and kapha – represent bodily humors that comprise a person’s overall constitution. While most people have elements of all three doshas, usually one is more dominant than the others, Courson explains. People who are vata tend to be tall and thin, extremely active and erratic, averse to cold temperatures, and open to change, Courson elaborates. A balanced vata person is creative and energetic; an unbalanced vata is anxiety-ridden and may have difficulty sleeping. The pitta dosha is strong in people who are muscular and of average height, smart and determined. In balance, a pitta is a strong leader; out of balance, a pitta is aggressive and prone to dominance. Kapha people tend to be heavier in build, with round-bodies and stable dispositions. In balance, they are calm, sweet and attuned to their five senses; out of balance, they are prone to sluggishness and weight gain. When Courson consults with clients, he asks questions about that person and their family history before he conducts a physical assessment – “May I see your tongue, please?” – and reads the client’s pulse. Depending upon the client’s dominant dosha, Courson will suggest a particular mix of oils for an hour-long abhyanga detox massage, as well as prescribe herbs available for sale in the office and print out a list of foods compatible with your dosha. The abhyanga session takes place in a side massage room. The walls are lined with bamboo matting and draped tapestries hang from the ceiling. Soft music plays as licensed massage therapist Patricia Sanchez, who is trained in Ayurvedic treatment modalities, pours warm oils onto the small of the client’s bare back. For the next hour, she presses deeply into the back, shoulders, arms and legs, slathering on more oil in patterns meant to stimulate circulation and flush toxins out of the lymph system. At the end, the client rises from the massage table, smelling mildly of peanuts, but with skin soft as pillows and muscles tingling with relaxation – every kink kneaded out of them by Sanchez’s strong hands. Waiting in the lobby is her next client and one of the college’s students, 51-year-old Peggie Collins. A sergeant with the Miami-Dade Police Department, Collins was looking for an alternative career to pursue following her impending retirement. “It’s time to do something different,” she says. Already a licensed massage therapist, Collins wanted to deepen her practice. She learned about the center on the Internet and talked with its founder, Cookie Tello. She came away feeling she had found an avenue that transcended her previous studies. Collins has used some of the herbal treatments to soothe her own sore throat and muscle pain, and has applied medicated oils and massages to her father, who recently suffered a stroke. “His balance and strength is improving,” Collins says. At the moment, though, it’s time for some pampering. With Sanchez beckoning, Collins heads to the massage room for her massage. “The therapist has to take care of herself,” Collins says.
