- In Age of Racial Reckoning, Ralph Lauren Partners with Morehouse & Spelman Grads on Vintage Fashion
Screen shot of Ralph Lauren’s homepage for its new Morehouse and Spelman fashions. Ralph Lauren Prompted by George Floyd’s murder on May 25, 2020, major retail companies touted their commitment to racial justice. Some publicly supported the Black Lives Matter movement. The Vermont-based ice cream manufacturer Ben & Jerry’s went further and issued a list of actions aimed at “dismantl[ing] white supremacy in all its forms.” Popular clothing company Ralph Lauren launched its own initiatives in 2020 and most recently in March 2022 when it announced a partnership with two historically Black colleges to design a commemorative clothing line. The Polo Ralph Lauren Exclusively for Morehouse and Spelman Colleges Collection is the brainchild of two company staffers, Morehouse alum James Jeter and Spelman alum Dara Douglas. In the words of company founder Ralph Lauren, the partnership with Morehouse and Spelman offers “a more complete and authentic portrait of American style and of the American dream.” Selling Black style For a company that prides itself on what it calls a “distinctive American perspective,” Ralph Lauren’s image is still limited in this new collection to the most respectable and easily monetized Black people that animate the Black American story. In my forthcoming book, “Branding Black Womanhood: Media Citizenship from Black Power to Black Girl Magic”, I explore the history of this practice of wooing Black consumers through commercial campaigns that use social movement rhetoric. Then, as now, my research has shown how America’s household brands have appropriated affirming images and slogans and transformed them into advertisements designed to attract middle-class Black shoppers. Companies that packaged such products believed that they could secure a new, loyal Black customer base simply by representing them glamorously. As the costs of Ralph Lauren’s new line of clothing reveals, wearing the latest fashion trend comes at a premium to often overlooked communities. Two men are seen in this screenshot of Ralph Lauren’s homepage for its new Morehouse and Spelman fashions.Ralph Lauren Prices for the Morehouse collection start at $69.50 for a maroon ball cap and soar to $2,498.00 for a wool coat. The least expensive item in the Spelman collection is a $98 silk scarf, with a $998 wool coat in the college’s signature sky blue landing at the high end. A purported $1 trillion in Black buying power – a number contested by some scholars – is likely part of what draws Ralph Lauren to this project on Black history. Yet, a racial wealth gap where the average Black family claims just under $13% of the wealth that the average white family holds, reported as $188,200 in 2019, suggests that the value of such celebratory campaigns is limited. Racial reckoning Shortly after the George Floyd murder, Ralph Lauren joined the rush of corporations releasing public statements with an open letter on racial equality on June 10, 2020. The letter described systemic racism as “an American problem” and “a fashion problem” and summarized the company’s strategy for addressing its own failures. In addition to expanding already established initiatives, such as dialogue groups, internal diversity training, and support for the United Negro College Fund, Ralph Lauren also promised to “interview at least one Black or African American candidate” for vacant senior leadership positions. Among them is a $2 million pledge to the United Negro College Fund and “dedicated internship offers for HBCU students.” A screenshot of Ralph Lauren’s partnership with Morehouse and Spelman colleges.Ralph Lauren In addition, Ralph Lauren produced a documentary film, “A Portrait of the American Dream,” commemorating each institution’s legacy and the Ivy-esque style that students made their own from the 1920s through the 1950s. The documentary is transparent about the brand’s intention to correct its limited framing of American style by “writing untold chapters” into the story of classic collegiate fashion. Hip-hop style Ralph Lauren’s belated recognition trails a long history in which Black communities have imbued American culture with a distinct aesthetic, especially in the realm of clothing. In fact, the move by Ralph Lauren to spotlight Black style before 1960 overlooks a more recent and direct connection between Ralph Lauren and members of the hip-hop generation. A group of young African American and Latino New Yorkers glorified the brand in the 1980s, attaching it to what was then an emergent, urban subculture. The group called themselves the Lo Lifes, a riff off the Polo name and a sarcastic admission that despite their affinity for the clothing, they were excluded from the brand’s white, upper crust, target customer. Although Ralph Lauren initially resisted this less affluent fan base, the mostly one-sided love affair between hip-hop and Polo persists. Still waking The idea of Black excellence is nothing new. Nor is commercializing Black pride. In this screenshot of Ralph Lauren’s homepage for its new Morehouse and Spelman fashions, a group of Black women pose in front of a building.Ralph Lauren Even retailers such as Walmart are trying to cash in on Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, and compelled slaveholders to free the enslaved. [Over 150,000 readers rely on The Conversation’s newsletters to understand the world. One thing is clear: Ralph Lauren has at least increased the visibility of Black life and culture during this era of racial reckoning. By Timeka N. - Noula Exhibition in Miami Design District | Haitian Heritage Month
In honor of Haitian Heritage Month, the Miami Design District’s latest art exhibition is taking place at the Buick Building. NOULA is an exhibition that challenges the idea of Haitian experience and existence. This exhibition brings together contemporary Haitian artists from different parts of the world, who disrupt and confront the negative notion about Haitian culture, societal standards, and the perceptions of self-identity in relation to imposed narratives. MORE ON NOULA NOULA addresses historical and contemporary systemic issues, while using the homeland of Haiti as an example and a beacon. This exhibition illuminates the great contributions Haiti has offered throughout history. These artists, in their cultural context, are addressing stereotypes, biases which affect self-perception, and the misconception of their own country. These Haitian artists encourage us to celebrate an emerging cultural exhibition, transforming the Buick Building into an immersive gallery. All from different parts of the world, these artists showcase original art, sculptures, drawings, and mixed-media- in hopes of sparking new expectations in the world of Haitian art. The exhibition notably features conceptual art from Michaelle Sergile, film projection from Steven Baboun and sculptures from Nico Vorbe. In the spirit of Diasporic engagement, NOULA bridges the gap between classic works from old masters and contemporary masters to the most recent work by contemporary artists. - What Kind of Damages Can I Get In a Personal Injury Case?
Being involved in a car accident is an unexpected and frustrating event. Afterward, you may be wondering who will take care of the expenses that you unfairly incurred as a result of someone else’s misconduct and recklessness. Thankfully, under Florida personal injury laws you are able to recover compensation from the liable party whose negligence led to the accident and your injuries. Not all personal injury attorneys share the same practice areas, so make sure that you hire an attorney who specializes in the type of injury you suffered, like product liability cases or motor vehicle accidents or premises liability cases. Economic Damages The first type of compensation that you can receive from your personal injury claim are economic damages. These are financial losses that you have suffered as a result of the accident. They include: The ambulance bill Your emergency room visit Your hospital stay Diagnostic testing in the hospital, such as x-rays or MRI‘s Medications provided in the hospital or prescribed for you to take at home Any required surgeries Any follow-up medical visits that are required Physical therapy and rehabilitation You can provide copies of your bills, invoices or receipts as evidence of the medical expenses related to your injuries. The good news is that when you are working with a personal injury attorney who has many years of experience, they fight to have all of your medical expenses covered by the liable party’s insurance company. Accident injuries can vary from mild to severe, depending on the accident and the impact or force that was thrust upon the victim. Traumatic brain injuries, whiplash, spinal cord injuries, cuts and lacerations, broken bones and burns are some of the most common types of accident injuries that can take months or years to heal from and cause the victim undue suffering. Lost Wages If your injuries prevented you from working immediately after your accident or if you continue to be unable to work, then you can also recover lost wages. Your employer can provide your salary or hourly wage information to your attorney who will then use that information to fight for you to receive compensation for your lost wages. If the accident renders you unable to work, then you can file for future lost earning potential. Other Losses An accident affects your entire life from your ability to work to your ability to simply go to the grocery store or pick up your kids from school. You can recover miscellaneous financial losses related to your accident including child care, car repairs or replacement, transportation expenses and other costs that you have receipts or invoices for. Non-Economic Damages Non-economic damages compensate victims for their pain and suffering after a car accident. Accidents are emotionally disturbing events that can lead to lifelong physical impairment and trauma. The accident may have affected your family life and your personal relationships, or even your feelings about yourself. Image by Pickawood/Unsplash Your Settlement Amount Adding up all of your economic damages is straightforward, but calculating your non-economic damages is much more difficult. A personal injury attorney advocates for their client to receive maximum compensation by proving how much the individual has suffered physically and emotionally due to the liable party’s negligence. - Reasons To Book A Limo Rental for Your Next Airport Transfer
According to Trafalgar, about 89% of people consider traveling enjoyable but also stressful. It may be challenging to think about transportation to the airport with so many arrangements to make. While you may think that public transportation or rideshares are viable options, you should also consider a Miami airport limo service. The Benefits of Booking an Airport Limousine Service Airport limousine services are not just a luxury; they are also a convenient, ideal choice for transportation. The benefits of booking an airport limousine service for your next airport transfer include: #1. It is more comfortable After spending time on a long flight, you may be tired after not being able to stretch your legs or get up. The person sitting beside you may be asleep for most of the flight, so you may have difficulty getting into and out of your seat. After an exhausting flight, the last thing you need to worry about is transportation to the hotel or your home. By opting for an airport limousine service, you can enjoy a smooth and comfortable experience while relaxing and stretching out before getting to your destination. Image by Michael Benz/Unsplash #2. You will arrive at your destination faster Public transportation can provide a convenient and cheap way to get you to your destination, but it will take a while until you get to your home or hotel. They also have more stops to make and might pick up other passengers. If you hire an airport limo service, an airport chauffeur will wait for you when your flight lands and take you straight to your destination, saving you a lot of time. #3. An airport limousine service is affordable At first glance, limousines may seem expensive, but they are cheaper than you might expect. Take taxis, for example. If you are not familiar with the city, they could take longer routes to charge you more. But when you hire an airport limousine service, you will know the price upfront and can rest assured that the driver will take the fastest, most efficient route to your destination. Even if it costs a little more than shuttles or public transport, you will see that it is worth it for the comfort. #4. It relieves stress Booking an airport limousine is very easy and straightforward. It may be stressful to travel by public transport as it can be unpredictable. You can book online in advance without worrying about anything else. #5. The chauffeur knows the city A significant advantage of traveling via airport limousine is that the chauffeur knows the city well, meaning they will take the best routes possible to get you to your destination on time. They may also recommend sites to see and places to go as you drive. You can tell the driver about the places you want to see, whether it’s parks, museums, or bars in town, and they will tell you where you can go. #6. It is safe When you hire an airport limousine service, you can rest assured that you will be in good hands. The chauffeurs will be courteous and respectful no matter who you are. In addition, you will know that your chauffeur has been thoroughly vetted and will always have your safety and comfort in mind. By ML Staff. Top image by Bob Ward/Pixels
- What Happens When a Criminal Case is Dismissed?
It’s possible to get your case dismissed and have the charges dropped before the case goes to court. However, it may prove difficult to do so without the assistance of an experienced criminal defense attorney. That’s why it’s important to close your case properly and understand exactly what happens when your criminal case is dismissed. Consulting with an experienced attorney about your claim could help you get your desired results. That’s why criminal defense law professionals suggest working with Julian Stroleny for your defense needs. Read on for more information about properly dismissing your case. Image by Saúl Bucio/Unsplash Dismissed Case A dismissed case means that a case is closed without finding guilt. This means there are no convictions for the defendant in a criminal case by a court of law. However, a dismissed case does not prove that the defendant is factually innocent and could remain on the defendant's criminal record. Voluntary and Involuntary Dismissal Cases are voluntarily dismissed if the prosecution chooses to do so. Victims can influence prosecutors to dismiss a case voluntarily, but the decision is ultimately theirs to make. District attorneys can choose to pursue a case even after the victims declined to press charges. When a case is involuntarily dismissed, this means the judge chooses to dismiss the case against the wishes of the prosecution. This may occur when the defense files a motion to dismiss based on a legal reason. Read on to learn more about the different kinds of dismissed cases. Different Types of Dismissed Cases The type of dismissal will impact your case’s outcome and your ability to potentially seal the case from your criminal record. Here are the different types of dismissed cases you may face: Dismissed with Prejudice When a case is dismissed "with prejudice," it means that no other suit can be filed on that same claim once the case is closed. When judges dismiss a case with prejudice, they determine that the case is settled and cannot move forward. Defendants may appeal these rulings to a higher court, but they cannot file a new claim. Dismissed without Prejudice If a case is dismissed "without prejudice," it means that, although the case is closed, other suits can be filed on the same claim within the applicable statute of limitations. Cases may be dismissed without prejudice if the case is only partially settled and the plaintiff chooses to drop the charges for a complete settlement. Plaintiffs can file a new claim against the defendant. A case could result in being dismissed without prejudice if the plaintiff agrees to allow the defendant to make payments instead of going to court. Dismissed for Want of Prosecution When a case is dismissed for "want of prosecution," it means that the case has been inactive on the court docket and that neither the plaintiff nor the defendant was active in the proceeding. If a case has remained inactive on the docket for a given amount of time, and both parties fail to seek relief or appear in the trial, the court may decide to place the case on a list of cases to be dismissed. Dismissal After a Mistrial If a jury fails to deliver a unanimous verdict, your criminal defense team can file a motion for a mistrial. The judge may ask the jury to take additional time to deliberate and attempt to reach a verdict, but if a verdict can’t be reached, a judge may declare a mistrial. Sealing A Dismissed Case To seal a dismissed case or an arrest that did not lead to a conviction, when charges weren’t filed, the defendant must show factual innocence of the crime. This will vary depending on the laws governing the state. Sealing a dismissed case means the information is removed from sight so that the public. Sealing a court case from a criminal record allows individuals to move forward without being concerned with potential employers and business associates having an awareness of the record. To clear your record, you’ll have to request an expungement. This process can take months. This is a critical step and can seriously harm your career if it isn’t handled promptly. An arrest for a criminal offense is a serious matter. If you’ve been arrested for white-collar crimes, domestic violence cases, sex crimes, felony cases, or a violent crime, take the time to learn your legal rights. Having your case dismissed, sealed, or expunged correctly will determine your case's lasting impact on your life. By ML Staff. Top image by Succo/Pixabay

The memorial is a large arm, outstretched to the sky with over 100 smaller figures clinging to it and each other. In a city with one of the largest populations of Holocaust Survivors, since 1990 this memorial has served as a reminder of the suffering that occurred in Nazi concentration camps and hosts a number of community and educational events. SCOTT RAKOW YOUTH CENTER Go ice skating year-round at the Scott Rakow Youth Center, which welcomes children of all ages. Featuring a 12,885-square-foot rink and a pro shop that provides skates, pads, leg warmers and gloves, they’ve got everything you need for an afternoon of skating. SOUTH OF FIFTH STREET & SOUTH POINTE PARK To see how the other half lives, take a stroll through SoFi, the enclave South of Fifth Street and South Pointe Park, known for its hip, elite residents and multi-million-dollar penthouse suites. Eyeball the most vibrant Miami Beach houses and condos, or get a yummy taste of luxury at any number of high-end restaurants along the way. If you’re going to run into a celebrity in Miami Beach, it will probably happen here. DUCK TOUR To soak up all the sights of Miami Beach, climb aboard a Miami Beach Duck Tour, with a specially designed tour vehicle that’s equally at home on the land and the water. Pick from multiple excursions that offer spectacular views of the local architecture, the homes of the rich and famous, and some history lessons on the city narrated by entertaining tour guides who all have backgrounds in comedy and performance.
