- American Model & Actress Kara Del Toro Talks to Miami Living
Kara Del Toro is an American model, actress and social media sensation who rose to fame for her role in a commercial for Carl’s Jr TV. She is the face and spokesmodel for some of the world’s most recognizable brands and has a huge social media presence with more than 4.3 million followers in social networks. Born from a small town near Houston, Texas, she has made a name for herself in the world of fashion, beauty, lifestyle and content creation. Kara is best known for her work as the face and advertising model in several campaigns for GUESS Jeans and has graced the pages and covers of GQ, V Magazine, Marie Claire, Maxim, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and now Miami Living Magazine. We caught up with Kara to learn more about her life story, her modeling career and also her work in the crypto world. Miami Living: Tell us how you started your career as a model? Kara Del Toro: I actually went to a modeling school in Houston. We thought it would be a scam, but it ended up working out! I started modeling in high school, from there they sent me to Milan, Hamburg, LA and NYC and finally I moved to LA. It’s been a long, crazy journey. It does not necessarily happen overnight like you see on TV, but it was worth it. ML: What about your inspirations? Is there one person who inspires you? KDT: I am constantly inspired by the women around me. I try to surround myself with positive and supportive women. My mother is the kindest person I know. She is a reiki, Oneness, certified sound healer and an amazing artist. She inspires me to be a better person every day, to be kinder and to focus on what makes me happy. She also motivates me to work hard because I want to support her and give her some of the blessings I have had in my career, such as traveling the world, etc. ML: How do you balance work, travel and life? KDT: It can be a struggle sometimes, but I am a very metaphysical person and I believe that my spirituality has helped me a lot. Meditating and being in nature are two things that help me the most. It helps me feel clear and reminds me of what is really important in life. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I take the time to go to the beach, do a nice meditation and say some affirmations that really help me to regenerate. ML: Can you tell us about your work and your experience in Miami? KDT: Miami has a special place in my heart. My career started shooting my Guess campaign with J Balivn in Miami. That is still one of my favorite shoots today. As well as walking in Miami swim weeks of course! So many key moments early in my career took place in Miami. ML: What are your favorite things to do and places to go in Miami? KDT: Miami has the best beaches, (sorry LA) but the water in Miami is always the perfect temperature. I practically live in the ocean when I am in Miami... haha! I love the One Hotel Miami, it’s probably my favorite hotel, so I usually stay there. Hotel Faena also has a super cool vibe. And dinner at Komodo is a must. Miami has a very special energy. It’s one of those cities where you can meet friends everywhere and have a good time. ML: We have heard about your NFT project. Can you tell us more about it? KDT: I did a shoot with one of my best friends (photographer) Megan Batson. I added some digital graphics and minted some of the photos last year as NFT. It was super fun and kind of an experiment. I minted it just before mainstream media was really aware of NFTs and used it as a way to express my creativity. In the modeling world, you do not usually have the opportunity to creatively direct your own shoot. So with my NFT, I was able to do just that. ML: What sparked your interest in NFT? KDT: We are in the beginning stages of NFTs right now, so it’s really fun and exciting. The possibilities are endless. I think NFTs will soon enter more and more areas of our daily lives, like social media, so I figured why not start now. ML: And how did you go about developing your own NFT? KDT: I spent many hours listening to podcasts and participating in chats in the clubhouse. I really wanted to understand what it was before I got into it. Other than that, it was pretty simple. I came up with a concept and teamed up with a photographer friend to shoot the images, edit them, add some digital graphics, and mint my first token on Opensea. You will need a crypto wallet and some Ethereum to mint your own piece. ML: The NFT market is still very new and has yet to be fully exploited. How do you think the industry will evolve? KDT: Who knows, the possibilities with NFTs could be endless. The cool thing about an NFT is that it can never be duplicated. The image can be copied, but the token can not. It’s like having a unique signature or bar code. Some collectors use them as a store of value, others hang them in digital art galleries, while other NFTs give you unique access to a concert or club. They could be part of our future and who knows....maybe we will buy houses as NFTs? Or maybe they’ll just be a huge meme. haha, we will see. - Ideas for your Family Vacation in Miami
Surprise! Florida’s hub for culture and cool is also kid-friendly. Miami boasts a global reputation for its nightlife and arts scene, but the city is also packed with entertaining and enriching things to do as a family. Year-round subtropical warmth makes it a great getaway for making lifetime memories. And there’s an added benefit: Miami’s diverse Latin American and Caribbean heritage translates into great opportunities to introduce children to different cultures. Street Art The former warehouse district of Wynwood is now a trendy, walkable ’hood perfect for exposing kids to the gritty art of graffiti (which also makes eye-catching backdrops for family vacation photos). Wynwood Walls, 2520 NW 2nd Ave., is a good starting point. The ever-changing outdoor collection of huge, colorful murals by street artists from around the world is free and open to the public. Before it turns into an adult block party after 10 p.m., Wynwood Yard, 56 NW 29th St., also is an inventive outdoor hub for kids to run around. There’s an edible garden, music, a bar for parents, food trucks, and pop-up craft and food vendors selling everything from mac-and-cheese and empanadas to smoothies and vegetarian dishes. Taking a cue from Disney’s FastPass, there’s even a free food-ordering app called The Wynwood Yard, so you can avoid standing in line. For dessert, cruise by the Asian-inspired food hall called 1-800-LUCKY at 143 NW 23rd St. to try its famous Taiyiki ice cream, served in fun, Instagram-ready, koi fish-shaped cones. Film & Music Miami Beach’s SoundScape Park, 400 17th St., is a modern, landscaped space that’s the perfect perch for viewing films and concerts projected onto the New World Center’s soaring 7,000-square-foot outdoor wall. From November through May, free WALLCAST classical music concerts by New World Symphony mean you can grab a blanket and watch your kids do cartwheels while Beethoven and Brahms fill the air. During the same period, free movies – from favorites like “Big” and “Edward Scissorhands” to new releases – are offered at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Check the latest schedule here. Family Beaches Matheson Hammock Park, 9610 Old Cutler Rd., in the Miami suburb of Coral Gables is a favorite retreat for locals with young children because it has a shallow, wave-free lagoon with lifeguards. On nearby Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, 1200 Crandon Blvd., has a stretch of sand regularly named one of the Top 10 beaches in the United States. The state park also has a historic lighthouse with tours, two outdoor restaurants, and bike rentals, including surreys that seat four to six people. You can catch a view of Miami’s Stiltsville, a collection of wood stilt houses in Biscayne Bay, from the wooded bike path. In Miami Beach, Sabrina’s Beach, 6500 Collins Ave., is an accessible beach with an inclusive playground. The park has a tailored, ADA-accessible dune crossing so people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the ocean. The Venetian Pool, hidden in the Miami suburb of Coral Gables, is a popular Miami family retreat with waterfalls, grottos and a manmade beach. - City of Coral Gables Extraordinary Pools One of the most beautiful public pools, the historic, 1923 Venetian Pool at 2701 DeSoto Blvd. in Coral Gables is worth the drive to the suburbs. It’s a spring-fed coral rock quarry with waterfalls and cave-like grottos patrolled on busy days by lifeguards riding surfboards. It’s a diaper-free facility so children under the age of three are not allowed in the park. If you have a little one, Flamingo Park, 999 11th St., in Miami Beach has the pool for you. Its aquatic center has a zero-depth entry play pool perfect for wading with babies and toddlers. Young thrill seekers will enjoy the water slides, lazy river and splash pools of Grapeland Water Park, 1550 NW 37th Ave., near Miami International Airport. Food Culture Head to Calle Ocho (8th Street) in Little Havana for a taste of Latin cuisine. Versailles, 3555 SW 8th Street, is the mirror-lined, Cuban equivalent of Denny’s, with tropical fruit shakes, media noche ham-and-pork sandwiches, croquettes and plantains. For dessert, sample the Latin-infused scoops at Azucar Ice Cream Company 1503 SW 8th St., known for flavors derived from Cuban coffee, key limes, caramel flan, sweet corn and calabaza. Be sure to snap a family photo in front of the tiny shop’s colorful painting of Celia Cruz, the most popular Latin artist of the 20th century, known for her catch phrase, ¡Azúcar! (sugar). In Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, the Little Haiti Cultural Complex’s Caribbean Marketplace, 5925 NE 2nd Ave., features dishes by Latin and Caribbean celebrity chefs every second Friday of the month. Indoor Kid Zones Seek out air-conditioned fun at Miami’s many indoor escapes. Hands-on experiments, a touch tank, planetarium, local birds of prey exhibit and a stunning, three-story aquarium make for an all-ages retreat in downtown Miami at the Frost Museum of Science, 1101 Biscayne Blvd. Next door at the Perez Art Museum, 1103 Biscayne Blvd., ask at the front desk for a Family Pack, which includes activity sheets, pencil kits, puzzles and scavenger hunts to explore the galleries. For kids 10 and under, a play cruise ship, supermarket and kid-sized TV studio are part of the fun at Miami Children’s Museum, 980 MacArthur Cswy. Thrill seekers will want to head back to Wynwood for FunDimension, 2129 NW 1st Ct., an indoor playground packed with arcade and virtual reality games, laser tag, bumper cars and a bungee dome. Feeding giraffes is a family pastime at Zoo Miami, the largest tropical zoo in the continental United States. - Zoo Miami Animal Life Ever felt a giraffe’s 18-inch prehensile tongue curl around your hand? At Zoo Miami’s Samburu Giraffe Feeding Station, families stand on a tall wooden platform to get eye-to-eye and feed greens by hand to a herd of African giraffes. There are also camel rides and more than 2,000 animals at the cage-free attraction, 12400 SW 152nd St., the largest tropical zoo in the continental United States. In Everglades National Park, discover alligators, great blue herons and other native species in the wild by renting bikes for the 15-mile, paved trail or taking the two-hour tram tour inside the park’s Shark Valley, 36000 SW 8th St., a 50-minute drive from downtown Miami. Back in the city, Jungle Island eco-adventure park at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail brings parrots, lemurs, sloths and other animals up close for interactive encounters. There’s also a 22-acre rainforest, an 80-foot high zipline and free-flight wind tunnel. Nearby, Miami Seaquarium, 4400 Rickenbacker Causeway, offers swim-with-dolphin (or seal) encounters, touch pools and sea life exhibits. By Jodi Mailander Farrell for Visitflorida.. Self-proclaimed “fashion bitch turned wellness witch” (Cardsy B) shares her irresistibly witty and raw account of seemingly having, then losing, it all to redirect inward to find healing and purpose in unlocking her intuition. “I always thought Source/ the Universe/ my Higher Self would sound like a firm British lady or maybe Morgan Freeman. But this just sounded like a calmer and more confident version of myself. Maybe that’s why it was so hard to hear, let alone trust, when I hadn’t felt calm or confident in a really long time.” - The Saturn Diaries page 115 Before she became Cardsy B, Rebecca Szymczak was a rebellious outcast from rural Pennsylvania, determined to live the quintessential Manhattan life, landing high-level fashion jobs, celebrity friends, and even her own lingerie line along the way. But by age thirty-one, an astrological transit—known as Saturn’s Return—gate-crashed her life, stripping away her self-identity; and exposing a battle with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, just beneath the glossy surface. As she began to rebuild her life, Cardsy revisited her childhood hobby of pulling tarot cards. In doing so, she reconnected with her intuition in powerful and often unexpected ways. The Saturn Diaries is the compelling record of that journey, involving everything from a homemade Oprah-ator phone created to dial the universe to a solo trek through the Costa Rican Jungle to participate in an Ayahuasca ceremony. Part memoir and part spellbook, each chapter concludes with a spell, elixir or ritual. The Saturn Diaries is intensely moving and often hilarious while chronicling both discovery and remembrance, and reveals the magic that occurs when you acknowledge the seeker within and begin listening to your own inner guidance system. Cardsy B’s highly anticipated and awaited “grimoire” is an uplifting, self-loving, lifehack guide to making the most out of life’s lemons while letting your authenticity be your guiding light. The Saturn Diaries is a truly helpful, enlightening, and empowering read for all those seeking to connect with their inner magic. Szymczak’s literary candor is bound to be a crowd pleaser … making this book, along with some of her other hysterically iconic products like the Badass Bitches Tarot Deck, Stay Magical AF Hoody and The Oprah-ator Phone, the perfect gift for friends, family, colleagues, and yourself. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Rebecca Szymczak—aka Cardsy B—is a writer, intuitive tarot card reader, and healing catalyst. Her work has been featured in MTV, Nylon, Shape, Bustle, and The Zoe Report. She quit her fashion career to dive deeper into her intuitive gifts after experiencing a dark night of the soul. She now uses tarot to guide clients, including celebrities, C-suite executives, artists, and entrepreneurs, to their own inner knowing and healing abilities. In addition to creating her signature tarot deck, Badass Bitches Tarot, Cardsy B is also the host of the Hex and the City podcast. The Saturn Diaries: A Modern Day Grimoire is her first book. She has redeveloped her career away from fashion to working full-time as a tarot card reader and witch bitch. By ML Staff. Images Courtesy of Cardsy B
- Try These Tasty New Dishes at Villa Azur Miami Beach
From spice-crusted ahi tuna to saucy vegan gnocchi, Miami Beach's elegant French-Mediterranean supper club Villa Azur has a fresh set of menu items to try. The dynamic restaurant and lounge isn't a novice to combining European tradition with Miami modernity. While its expert chefs serve familiar recipes within a classy environment, Villa Azur remains committed to presenting a vibrant and flirty vibe. This dedication most recently shines through its newest menu additions in tune with the oncoming autumn season. Inspired by Villa Azur's preexisting concept, ingredients and techniques, the new menu brings a handful of innovative dishes to the table that beautifully blend with its current culinary roster. Included is the focus on vegetarian and vegan options. The inclusive implementation allows patrons to experience meat alternatives that are just as fulfilling and delicious, if not more, no matter one's meat partiality. A key example is the Impossible Gnocchi ($42), a vegan gnocchi dish made with Impossible ground beef, classic handmade tomato sauce, grated cashew cheese and basil. "We like to accommodate to our guest," said Villa Azur's Chef Torres. "We wanted to create something flavorful that not only vegans will order. Impossible meat became a very good protein replacement, and I think a good way of using it is by creating a bolognese sauce with it that combines good, fresh ingredients like tomato and basil served in a more complex dish like gnocchi." Among the other dishes, Chef Torres anticipates that the Blackened Swordfish ($43) will be a hit. "I love this dish because is a combination of flavors that are very fresh with an amazing fish," he said. "It comes over a sauce vierge, with a pan seared blackened swordfish topped with a herb salad. It's a very light dish for the Miami weather." Villa Azur's further new menu items include: Artichoke Salad ($21), with arugula, olive oil marinated artichokes, hearts of palm, mustard vinaigrette, parmesan frico, crispy quinoa, fennel, apple and smoked paprika. Hearts of Palm Ceviche ($25), with coconut citrus ginger sauce, fresh hearts of palm, red onion, butternut squash, mint avocado smash and chili oil. Yellowtail Crudo ($28), with sliced Japanese amberjack, tapenade dolce, roasted garlic aioli and citrus juice. Villa Azur's new menu is now available. The restaurant is located at 309 23rd St, Miami Beach, FL 33139. For hours and more information, visit villaazurmiamibeach.com. Written by ML Staff. Images courtesy of Villa Azur.
- 3 Car Accident Injuries You May Not Immediately Notice
While car accidents could cause some of the most gruesome injuries, there are some cases where the injuries may not be immediately noticeable. Only after some time, usually hours or days after the accident, do victims begin to notice the symptoms of their injury. This happens due to the delayed reaction to a trauma. The worst part is that if the latent injuries are left untreated, they could prove to be life-threatening or could become severe over time. This is why it's crucial to see a doctor if you've been in an accident, even if you think you are fine. 3 Car Accident Injuries You May Not Immediately Notice Burns and cuts are visible injuries. But you should also be on the lookout for injuries that are not so apparent or whose symptoms take time to become visible. Here are 3 of the most common car accident injuries you may not notice immediately after your crash. If you've been in a car accident, visit an accident clinic in Florida, even if you think it's nothing serious. Mild brain Injury Car and auto accidents are one of the leading causes of brain injuries. A severe jolt to the head from an accident could cause damage to the brain, despite the skull and ambient fluid protecting it. The severity of brain injury could range from mild to extremely severe. If you've suffered a minor brain injury, you could experience one or more of the following symptoms: Headache Nausea Dizziness Fatigue Vomiting Blurry vision Inability to remember new information or recall the accident Concussions are quite common after a car accident, the symptoms of which could take some time to emerge. To avoid allowing your condition to get worse, you need to see a doctor as soon as you can after the crash. Soft-tissue injuries Soft tissue injuries include injuries related to the soft tissue in your body, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Hard tissue injuries (damage to hard tissues like bones) may be immediately noticeable, primarily because of the excruciating pain they cause. However, delayed pain is quite common in soft-tissue injuries. If not promptly addressed, they could lead to chronic pain. Some examples of soft-tissue injuries are: Sprains Contusions Strains Stress injuries Tendonitis Whiplash is also a severe soft-tissue car accident injury, the effects of which may not be immediately noticeable. It is a neck injury that happens due to a sudden back-and-forth motion of your neck and results in damage to neck tissues. Some clear signs of whiplash are stiffness or pain in the neck, dizziness, fatigue, issues with vision, trouble sleeping, and headaches. To prevent your accident injuries from getting worse, it's best to consult a doctor immediately after your accident. Consult an accident clinic to get the treatment you need for your injuries, however minor you think they are. Back injuries Back injuries include damage to the human spine. It includes damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, discs, discs, and vertebrae. Any damage to the lower back (or lumbar) and upper back (or thoracic) would also lead to a back injury. The clearest sign of a back injury is back pain, but it could also include other symptoms like: Reduced body mobility Issues while standing, sitting, or walking Headaches Stiffness in the body Muscle spasms Numbness Tingling Numbness and tingling sensations are prevalent symptoms of late-appearing injuries. If you've been in a car accident recently, pay close attention to how you feel after the crash. It could be the first sign of a deep-rooted injury if you feel a tingling sensation in your arms, hands, feet, or legs. Don't wait for the symptoms to worsen for you to visit a doctor. Ideally, you should get yourself checked at an accident clinic immediately after the accident. This way, your injuries could be detected before it gets a chance to become worse. You should also look out for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While this is not a physical injury and may show no physical symptoms, it can nevertheless be determinant to the victim. Some common signs of PTSD are nightmares, depression, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, changes in personality, and changes in sleeping and eating patterns. Mental disorders initiated from car accidents should not be taken lightly at all. Ensure that you schedule a doctor’s appointment if you feel any discomfort or pain in your body after an accident. Your doctor could determine where and what injury you suffered from the accident. They would also give you tips on how you can monitor your symptoms and detect any red flags. By ML Staff.
