- Kelly Dabbah Presents "Daddy's Issues" Art Show at SCOPE Miami Beach, Nov 29-Dec 4th
"Daddy's Issues" marks Kelly Dabbah's second showcase at SCOPE Art Show Miami Beach. From November 29 through December 4, 2022, Dabbah is showcasing an immersive experience with her large format mirror (49''x90'') and antique chair reupholstered with her own design. SCOPE honors "its perpetual mission to provide a platform for innovative experiences and discovery ... welcoming exhibitors who showcase the new contemporary, a genre that makes an important contribution to both global politics and local community engagement." For this exhibition, Dabbah is represented by New York gallery Saphira & Ventura. Kelly Dabbah's “Daddy’s Issues” art exhibition explores the relationship between the heart and the mind. The show is carefully curated and constructed imagined identifying the uninhibited soul exposing emotions such as rejection. Kelly Dabbah is a Swiss Middle Eastern artist whose work explores gender, sexuality, identity and race, creating collages, prints, paintings and installations. Born in Geneva, she has lived in New York for more than seven years, building her career there. Her playful and bold esthetic reflects the social pressures of the female experience, dismantling and reinterpreting feminine tropes and symbolism. Balancing her Swiss minimalist training with her maximalist Middle Eastern roots, Dabbah remixes fragments of daily life and contextualizes them across a wide range of art objects, from furniture to fashion, including immersive experiences that take on a life of their own. Her digital collages are printed layer by layer on mirrors, combining colorful photos of friends, her own paintings, and other found subjects. Dabbah's collages invite the viewer to redefine their relationship to our oversaturated and mediatized world culture. Her Middle Eastern background and interest in the country's rich artistic tradition have influenced her maximalist approach to imagery and detail. MORE ON Kelly Dabbah With a degree in fashion design from Parsons School of Design and training with Chanel and Anna Sui, Dabbah moves beautifully between art, music, design and fashion. Dabbah has collaborated with musicians, restaurants and brands such as Anna Sui, Moleskin, Hampton Surf Company, YellowPop and Bala. She has created immersive experiences for the Gelareh Mizrahi Concept Store in the Miami Design District, ArtPark Miami and Showfields. - How to Make a "Délicieux" French Dessert – Cherry Clafoutis
A simple French dessert, clafoutis is part flan, part Dutch baby, and all parts délicieux. Clafoutis (pronounced kla-foo-TEE) is a simple French dessert of fruit, typically cherries, baked in a sweet, custard-like batter. The texture is unique and hard to describe – think of it as a cross between a fruit-filled flan and Dutch baby. While cherries are traditional, clafoutis is often made with other fruits, such as berries, plums, apricots, or apples. Similar to crepes, clafoutis batter can be made quickly in a blender, so the hardest part of this recipe is pitting the cherries. Interestingly, clafoutis is traditionally made with stone-in cherries, which supposedly impart a pleasant almond flavor – but who wants to spit out cherry pits (or crack a tooth) while enjoying a lovely French dessert? Instead, I pit the cherries and add a touch of almond extract to complement the fruit. The secret to making a good clafoutis, in my opinion, is using a combination of milk and heavy cream for the custard batter. Most recipes call for just milk, but cream adds richness and ensures the clafoutis bakes up creamy rather than rubbery. Clafoutis can be served lukewarm or at room temperature, plain or dusted with powdered sugar. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE CHERRY CLAFOUTIS STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS Begin by pitting the cherries. I use the Leifheit Cherry Stoner, and it makes quick work of the task. Preheat the oven to 375°F and set an over rack in the middle position. Melt the butter in a 10-inch cast-iron or nonstick ovenproof skillet over medium heat.(Alternatively, if you don’t have the right skillet, melt the butter in the oven in a 2-quart baking dish. Swirl the butter so that it coats the sides the pan. Place the cherries in an even layer in the skillet (or baking dish). In a blender, combine the eggs, milk, cream, 1/2 cup of the sugar, the flour, salt, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Mix on medium speed until smooth and well combined. Pour the batter over the cherries. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove the clafoutis from the oven and sprinkle evenly with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place back in the oven and continue baking until just set and golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes more. Note that clafoutis will wiggle just a bit when done, but a toothpick or knife inserted into the center should come out clean. Let cool on a rack for about 30 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar (if using), and serve directly from the pan. - Brittney Griner’s Sentence is in Line with Russia’s Strict Drug Penalties
The sentencing of WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years behind bars and a fine of 1 million rubles – between US$10,000 and $20,000 depending on the exchange rate – should come as no surprise to those familiar with Russian law. The country has long enforced strict drug laws and has a well-deserved reputation for zero-tolerance jurisdiction. Griner performing a layup in 2017, Image courtesy of BDZ Sports Indeed, the crime Griner was prosecuted of – smuggling narcotics in “significant amount” in violation of Article 229¹(2)(c) of the Russian criminal code – carries a minimum sentence of five to 10 years “deprivation of freedom” along with the fine, and the upper end of the spectrum seems to be common. The prosecutor in Griner’s case asked for 9 ½ years and, presumably, the maximum fine. He got most of what he wanted. The backdrop of the case – worsening ties between Moscow and the Washington – may lead some observers to wonder if Griner was handed an unduly harsh sentence to up her worth as a bargaining chip during discussions over a potential prisoner swap. U.S. President Joe Biden responded to the announcement of Griner’s sentence by denouncing the verdict and sentence as “unacceptable.” An uncertain future. Evgenia Novozhenina/AFP via Getty Images But as longtime scholar of Russian law, I can say the sentence announced in the Khimki District Court outside Moscow on Aug. 4, 2022, is more or less in line with what was expected. Moreover, I believe the sentence itself does little to change the equation when it comes to any quid pro quo with Russia regarding the potential exchange of detained nationals – any negotiation over her fate will now take place outside the courtroom. The facts of the case Griner was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport on Feb. 17, 2022, after a sniffer dog detected vaping cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. The Russian Criminal procedure code provided that Griner, as a foreigner with no permanent residence in Russia, was ineligible for bail. The length of time Griner spent in detention after her arrest – nearly six months – is not unusual in drug cases of this nature in Russia and will be counted toward her sentence. And aside from the heightened international interest, the trial seemingly played out in line with Russian criminal procedure. Under the Russian criminal procedure code, there are no “pleas”; prosecutors have to prove guilt regardless of any confession. And the evidence was there in the shape of the vape cartridges seized by customs officials along with witness statements. In court, Griner acknowledged guilt and apologized for what she described as a mistake when packing her luggage. Her lawyers said that Griner’s cannabis oil was for medical purposes, to deal with chronic pain resulting from injuries sustained during her playing career. Griner, meanwhile, testified that she had no intention to break the law. But in line with other jurisdictions, including the U.S., ignorance of the laws is no defense in Russia. A pawn in US-Russian diplomacy? If the fate of Griner was set the moment she was caught with an illegal drug in a Moscow airport, her future is less certain. Griner has 10 days to appeal. The appeal will probably be heard rather rapidly, as standard Russian practice is to do so, but that also depends on the grounds of the appeal. If unsuccessful or unsatisfactory, additional appeals by way of cassation on issues of law may be heard at the discretion of the higher court, assuming grounds exist for this. If all appeals fail, Griner’s lawyers can apply to a presidential commission for a pardon or hope for amnesty. Given that Griner is being discussed in the context of a possible prisoner swap, it seems unlikely that the Kremlin will set Griner free without a reciprocal move from the U.S. government. But Griner’s currency as a pawn in U.S.-Russian relations, with Moscow seemingly willing to barter over the future of the high-profile prisoner, will likely change little as a result of her sentence. To many in the U.S., nine years’ imprisonment may seem like a harsh penalty for cannabis possession. But in Russia, it is par for the course for this crime. By William E. - The Art of William Oberheiser Now at Miami Beach Botanical Garden
The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition, Miami Contrasts and Harmonies: The Art of William Oberheiser. The public is invited to meet the artist and view his work at a cocktail reception on Thursday, November 10, from 6pm-9pm. The vibrant color, joyfulness and sensuality of nature burst with energy in the paintings and prints of William Oberheiser. In a return to Neo Tropicalismo the works, in watercolor and gouache, explore the visual imagery of Miami and the Caribbean, their narrative, nature and cultural diversity. At the same time, the narrative often suggests a deeper meaning, raising questions through unlikely juxtapositions, unexpected pictorial style, or even a strategically placed single image. As described by art historian Dr. Carol Damian, “it is evident that he has used the tropics as a key visual element in describing a range of scenes that go beyond the pleasantly pictorial to comment on a variety of social and cultural subjects. The paintings are bright and colorful but looks can be deceiving and the frequent appearance of so many birds often contracts with cityscapes, crowded and alive, and other activities that represent the diversity of daily life, especially in South Florida. Are the birds watching their world disappear? Do the cities tell a new and different tale as they pave over nature? Amidst the exuberance of Oberheiser’s images, there is a story revealed beneath the façade. Featuring different themes, the paintings often come to life from a perspective less pleasant. There are volcanic eruptions that warn of the political, social and environmental instability that plague our world. His cityscapes present a dynamic visual urbanism, while asking questions about what lies beneath their dynamics – and sometimes he uses traffic jams to further exacerbate the city’s and society’s woes. Oberheiser’s works offer a bird’s eye view of life below, as if the viewer rides in a helicopter above and looks down. It is left to our imagination to interpret their meaning or just enjoy the vibrancy of his colorful tropical scenes.” More on the artist Born in Havana and having graduated with a degree in fine arts from the Pacific N.W. College of Art in Portland, Oberheiser is inspired by his years living in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and now Miami. His artwork has been featured at the Portland Art Museum, The Alternative Museum in New York City, the Instituto de Cultura in San Juan, Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Vero Beach Museum of Art and numerous art galleries as well as private collections. Miami Contrasts and Harmonies: The Art of William Oberheiser will be on display in the Garden’s Butterfly Gallery through November 20, 2022. I created it to unite my various creative activities under one roof During this time, she also experienced a traumatic period in her life, which she refers to as her "dark times." After losing almost everything, including her home and family, she began searching for a symbol that represented strength. In ancient literature, Gloria connected with the symbol of the archetypal bull, found in prehistoric caves, Egyptian and Greek mythology, and astrology. Drawing after drawing, she began to incorporate the bull into everything she created until she harnessed her own inner strength and ability to heal "The bull saved my life, and now I want to share it with others to support my community". Since then, the bull - one with towering horns - has become the emblem and DNA of Latin for Glory. This symbol not only served as a guiding principle for her work, but also inspired her to live a life of perseverance and drive. This leap of faith led her to an artistic practice that explores the sacred relationship between the human spirit and the natural environment as expressed in ancient symbolism. She uses the natural elements - especially fire and earth - as both metaphorical language and materiality. This is expressed in the form of setting objects on fire, burning paper, experimenting with clay, and making her own LED boxes. "I am driven by the freedom to make something out of anything. My work will never be limited to one style or form. It will always break out of the norm and try to capture the magic of life" Her commitment to personal growth was recently featured in the series "Terra Mater: Burn to Bloom." During the pandemic, Gloria began learning the mediums of oil paint and ceramics to add dimension to her sculptural work. These two years of development focused on the element of earth as a symbol of identity, growth and transformation. She recalls that this process was emotionally challenging because it took her through difficult memories, memories of destruction that eventually led to rebirth. During this process, she also lost the person who anchored her roots and family - her grandfather. Through intense introspection and grief, she was able to use art as a tool to transform the darkness into light. Gloria began incorporating the orchid into "Terra Mater" as a representation of her dual identity as Dominican and American. She grew up in Miami surrounded by the hundreds of orchids her mother had grown after immigrating from her native country. But one day, they were all gone. When she lost her home, all the orchids disappeared as well, becoming a painful memory. After many years of healing, Gloria began to see this flower with a new perspective: Hope It was with great joy that she inaugurated this new element in the exhibition "Terra Mater: Burn to Bloom" at Art Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was the first exhibition outside of Miami and the first formal presentation of her ceramics "Pandora's Box" and "Burn to Bloom." "Santa Fe was a defining moment on an artistic and personal level. It was always my childhood dream to visit New Mexico, and I was able to travel there through art. I felt like I was home and like I was blossoming again." Since then, Gloria has created a new line of "Petite Pieces" that includes all of her signature elements such as the bull, match, stars and orchids. This collection of unique ceramics, paintings and sculptures will launch this November in time for Miami Art Week and the holidays. All pieces will be available at Latin for Glory Studio in North Miami or through their website at www.latinforglory.com. Join the tribe and follow her on Instagram @latinforglory. By ML Staff.
