- Keana Marie: The Actress Talks About How Miami Inspired Her Career
A stunning talent and triple threat— actress, writer and director Keana Marie got her start right here in Miami at the age of eight by booking commercials. Today, Keana is about to make a big splash with two exciting projects set to release. First, you will see Keana in the Netflix series, Dash & Lily, based on the New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. You will also be able to catch her in as female lead in Akatsuki Entertainment’s forthcoming film Root Letter, which was adapted from the hit PlayStation video game. We had the pleasure of catching up with Keana to talk about how growing up in Miami inspired and influenced her acting career and what advice she has to offer those who may be dreaming of becoming an actor themselves. Can you share some of your memorable experiences while living in Miami? Keana Marie: I was blessed to grow up on an island called Key Biscayne, so I spent a lot of my time at the beach or cruising on my longboard to my favorite Cuban joints. I will definitely say that some of my most memorable experiences in Miami have been culinary experiences. Luckily, my palate was able to expand and experience a myriad of flavors. How has Miami influenced you and your acting career? KM: I attended an Art School for high school where I focused on theater, film, and photography. It was a tiny school in Coconut Grove called A&M, Academy of Arts & Minds. With only 400 students, we were one big family, free to express ourselves, and accept each other. I think just having kids who knew what they wanted to do with their life at such a young age, who followed their passion, that has been my biggest influence. I also had the pleasure of shooting my first film Posthumous directed by Noah Debonis (Miami native/UM Alumni), when I was still living in Miami. Very grateful for that little film. Any “Miami” individuals, places or things that inspire you? KM: Oh all of it! My local beach spot on 3rd street, Mary’s Coin Laundry, The Barnacle, Sergio’s, PAMM, but most of all... I can attribute a lot of my inspiration from the wonderful people who shaped my years in Miami - my friends and family. What advice you would give to anyone looking to get into action and what are some of the personal challenges that you have encountered? KM: First, never stop believing in yourself and NEVER let anyone tell you what YOU are capable of. This is your life. It is your complete right to take it into your own hands. With that being said, don’t give up, ‘cause it sure isn’t easy. Constant challenges, ups & downs, hardships. You gotta stick it out. Don’t limit yourself or set time frames, if you apply yourself and stay driven and MAKE YOUR OWN PROJECTS, you will succeed. It is a norm for me to get rejection, it’s literally part of the job. So yes, my journey has not been a walk in the park. I’ve had a film lose funding the day before I was supposed to go shoot (to name a scenario) but hey - use it as ammunition. You can be your biggest fan fueling your fire or your biggest crutch, holding yourself back. Gooooooo, I believe in you. - The Art of an Athlete Collection by Max Pearce Inspired by Social Protest in Sports During Miami Art
Harlem Globetrotter Guard Maxwell “Hops” Pearce will show his inaugural exhibition, The Art of an Athlete, during Art Basel/Miami Art Week 2022 from Friday December 2nd, 2022 to Sunday December 4th, 2022, inside N’Namdi Contemporary Fine Art, located at 6505 NE 2nd Ave., in Miami, Florida. The collection is available for public viewing on December 2nd, from 6 -10 p.m. and at 12 noon until 10pm on December 3rd and 4th. Propelled by a deeply inappropriate and racist live interview with Alabama television anchors in 2020, Maxwell Pearce channeled the ensuing tide of backlash and hate filled messages into an artistic celebration of Black athletes’ abilities to shape their own narrative beyond their careers in sports. Pearce made national news when he took a public stance on the racially insensitive incident by posting a social justice focused video on social media, which was widely viewed and covered by major media. When the pandemic happened, Pearce, like the rest of the world, was forced to quarantine at home. During that challenging time, he channeled his frustration into The Art of An Athlete, a vibrant fine art, mixed media and athletic material collection that highlights sports figures who have used their platforms to fight for social justice throughout history by examining the different forms of protest from one generation to the next. "My work explores the multitudes of ideas within Black athleticism and celebrates athletes’ individual ability to do more than dribble, shoot, and score. It honors the literal ties that connect athletes across generations and binds them to public, collective memory”, commented artist Max Pearce, Creator, Art of an Athlete. THE COLLECTION Increasingly popular art pieces such as “42,” “Sports and Politics Don’t Mix,” and “Wilma” pay homage to legendary Black athletes and civil rights activists such as Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Honoree Jackie Robinson, Heavyweight Boxing Champion Muhammad “The Greatest” Ali, former National Football League Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and three-time track and field Olympic Gold Medalist Wilma Rudolph. “The Art of an Athlete” exhibition also honors powerful Black women athletes through pieces such as “Naomi” and “I See Me,” which are inspired by top-ranking professional tennis players Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. “More Than an Athlete” is one of the collection’s most remarkable pieces of artwork as it highlights the grievous history of racial injustices widely committed against Black Americans, including Pearce. This piece includes fluorescent-lit references to former United States President Barack Obama, Black Lives Matter, Black voting rights, and victims of police brutality. In addition to a public viewing of the art collection, the exhibition will also include a panel discussion, sponsored by DirecTV, featuring an array of superstar athletes. About Maxwell “Hops” Pearce Maxwell “Hops” Pearce is a professional athlete and an entrepreneur and civil rights activist. He is a 2018 ESP College Slam Drunk Championship semifinalist and an ESPYS Award 2020 ‘Can’t Stop Watching Moment of the Year’ honorable mention nominee. Pearce is also a first NCAA Division III Basketball player who is set to be featured in the NBA2K and NBA Live video games. Pearce’s “The Art of an Athlete” collection in inspired by both Black excellence and the age-long cruelty committed against the Black community in America. By ML Staff. - Design District's New "COCO Miami" Welcomes Jose Diaz as Executive Chef
Winter may be coming, but Miami is still heating up with the opening of COCO Miami — a new culinary and nightlife destination located in the city's upscale Design District. The fine-dining restaurant seamlessly blends elegant European cuisine with a thoughtfully curated interior and varying nightly entertainment. Hoping to bring both a quality taste and atmosphere to its guests, COCO is proud to announce Jose Diaz as its executive chef. In this role, Chef Diaz will oversee all menu creation, kitchen operations and daily culinary preparation of the restaurant’s classic European menu featuring crudos, appetizers, pastas, meats, seafood, shareables and sides. While the position is one of high responsibility, Diaz is far from a novice when it comes to making his way around a kitchen of class. Born in Venezuela, Diaz grew up cooking alongside his grandparents, always surrounded by food. In the summer of 2008, while visiting family in Milan during college, he discovered his passion for the culinary arts. Extending his stay in Italy, Diaz ended up as a cook at a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, where he began his culinary journey working for highly-regarded restaurants. Diaz has since worked in London, San Sebastián, New York and, now, Miami. In New York, Diaz led the outpost of popular London Restaurant, Bluebird, eventually moving to open another D&D London restaurant, Queensyard at Hudson Yard under the training of Bogdan Danila, the first Romanian Michelin-starred chef. In 2021, he moved to Miami, where he held the senior sous chef position at Le Jardinier, training under Seth Blumenthal and serving as an instrumental part of the team when Le Jardinier was awarded their first Michelin star. “Miami is a growing culinary city,” said Chef Diaz. “I am most excited for guests to experience old-school, European service with a modern twist, showcased from the moment they make a reservation to the moment they receive their bill.” Diaz joined the COCO team in July 2022, infusing his decade of culinary knowledge into its menu creation. The restaurant’s goal is to be a two-for-one: a luxurious restaurant destination where guests can enjoy a delicious meal with sophisticated service and an incredible atmosphere. One of COCO’s key features is the use of locally sourced ingredients, best showcased in dishes such as the Whipped Goat Cheese Salad, a light and elegant appetizer made with seasonal ingredients; Ora King Salmon, a selection of the world’s highest-quality salmon with ingredients from South Florida and New Zealand; and Burrata, with ingredients made by a local Italian family in Miami. Diaz says his favorite dishes to cook at COCO are the Whole Green Circle Chicken and the Australian Lamb, with the former reminding him of France and the latter of England. He also says first-time visitors must try the selection of crudos, which include seasonal oysters, the Kombu Yellowtail Carpaccio, Cured & Smoked Ora King Salmon and more. Opening in Winter 2022, COCO is located in the heart of the Miami Design District at 4029 N. Miami Ave., Miami, FL 33127. It is open Wednesday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. (The kitchen closes at 11:30 p.m.) Written by ML Staff. Image courtesy of COCO Miami.
- Miami’s Newest Fat-Reduction Technology Delivers Big Time. Lose At Least 3” of Fat on the Spot!
When we heard about Miami’s newest fat loss technology that promises to remove fat immediately—and without any pain or side effects—we were a tad skeptical, to say the least. It’s like they were promising a body-contouring unicorn, a fat-melting panacea that couldn’t possibly exist. But the promise became irresistible when Body Beautiful Miami, the new body contouring clinic located near Miami’s Design District that offers said technology, told us about their fat-loss guarantee: If we didn’t lose at least three inches of fat on our first 50-minute session, our treatment was free. There was nothing to lose, other than those pesky love handles. “When I first tried this technology, I also thought it sounded too good to be true,” Body Beautiful Miami CEO Gary Gomer tells Miami Magazine. “But then I lost 5.8 inches on my first treatment.” With our jaws dropped open, we asked Gomer for details. How could they know that with such precision? “Body Beautiful uses sophisticated 3D photographic measuring equipment to make results completely transparent to our clients,” he explains. “Our average client loses six inches of fat on their first 50-minute treatment, and we have had clients lose up to 25 inches in their first treatment.” Mic drop. Gomer continues, “What makes Body Beautiful Miami stand out from other body contouring companies in Miami is that we are the first to offer immediate results and full transparency for those results. Plus, we guarantee all of our services. We offer fat-loss guarantees on our treatment programs of up to 45 inches.” How the Technology Works Body Beautiful Miami uses FDA-approved Warm LED technology, which is one of the few devices to be approved by the FDA for immediate fat loss. Body Beautiful Miami’s Warm LED Red Light Therapy activates the same natural body processes used during diet and exercise, according to Gomer. “Light painlessly passes through the skin layer into the fat layer,” Gomer explains. “The patented wavelength of the LED light causes the fat cells to respond by opening their pores, releasing approximately 25 to 30 percent of their contents in the treated areas. The released fat is then drained from the cell, resulting in an immediate reduction in the fat layer, delivering instantaneous, measurable results across the entire treatment area. The contents of the fat cells are then excreted naturally through your waste. This is the same process the body would undergo naturally after a period of two weeks of diet and heavy exercise.” When asked how their Warm LED compares to other fat loss technologies, Gomer says: “Other popular technologies, such as liposuction, CoolSculpting and EmSculp either remove or freeze and kill fat cells. These technologies are painful, have significant side effects and take 6 to 12 weeks to see results, all with no guaranteed fat loss. Although the concept of killing and removing fat cells sounds appealing, the negative is the impact on your body when you gain weight after the process." Weight gain can lead to dysmorphic fat accumulation, Gomer says. “New fat has to go somewhere, so your body will store it in nontypical areas. Our Warm LED Red Light Therapy does not kill fat cells, rather it simply drains fat cells without damaging them, eliminating this issue altogether. And it’s completely painless and has zero side effects.” Anti-Aging Benefits As a major bonus, Warm LED Red Light Therapy increases the production of collagen and elastin, helping to tighten skin while it removes fat. It can even be used on the face, per Gomer. “It’s one of the most effective technologies to brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.” True Spot Treatment Body Beautiful Miami’s Warm LED therapy treats nearly all “trouble” area for both men and woman, including the hips, thighs, waist, arms, neck and back. According to the Cleveland Clinic, visceral fat is a type of fat that lies deep within your abdominal walls. Too much visceral fat can lead to serious health issues, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Customized Weight Loss In addition to Warm LED Red Light Therapy, Body Beautiful Miami offers a fully customizable 15-week weight-loss program, which combines both contouring and nutrition to accelerate and optimize fat loss. All weight-loss programs are run by renowned dietitian Kimberly Gomer, MS, RD, LDN, who spent a decade as Nutrition Director at the world-renowned Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa in Miami. With more than 25 years of experience coaching celebrities, royalty and everyone in between, Kimberly has helped countless others achieve their health and wellness goals. “I provide the tools to help my clients make sustainable lifestyle changes so they can live healthier, happier lives,” she says. “Our programs and packages not only maximize weight loss and fat loss, but they provide clients with the tools and support to successfully continue their weight-loss journey on their own.” To find out more or to schedule your first appointment at Body Beautiful Miami, call 305.456.3887 or visit www.bodybeautifulmiami.com. Body Beautiful Miami is located at 4770 Biscayne Blvd, Suite 1280, Miami, FL 33137. Being overweight increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, depression, cancer and other lifestyle conditions. Understanding how to lose weight or adopt healthy choices is challenging, especially when an individual has stubborn fat. Collaborating with a wellness center such as Miami’s new Body Beautiful Miami helps people lose weight and discover personalized health strategies that work well for their bodies. The team of professionals at the body contouring clinic use a licensed dietitian-developed and supervised nutritional program, as well as Warm LED Red Light Therapy to help their clients maximize fat loss. - New Technology Brings Relief to People Suffering from Chronic Nasal Conditions
According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, more than 31 million people in the United States suffer from sinus infection (known as sinusitis) each year. These individuals experience frequent facial pain, pressure or congestion; discharge of mucus that is yellow or green; difficulty breathing through your nose; even teeth pain, loss of smell or taste senses, headaches, fatigue, sore throat or bad breath. Physicians Andrew Rivera, MD and Paul Foster, MD of South Florida ENT have been in practice for years offering the entire spectrum of treatment options for these conditions. They have noticed a gradual trend toward more in-office treatments. “Plenty of people are simply unaware that their chronic conditions can be treated in the office depending on the severity of their disease,” said Dr. Rivera. “There’s no longer a need to suffer from annoying runny, stuffed up and irritated nasal passages. Our patients have enjoyed excellent results from these procedures.” According to Dr. Foster, most people try to solve their nasal and sinus problems by using over the counter remedies and rely on the help of treatments from urgent care centers and primary care physicians. “When these remedies are not sufficient, patients often do not know where to turn or how to alleviate their symptoms,” he said. “In the past, chronic nasal and sinus problems would potentially require invasive surgeries with general anesthesia and often significant downtime with lengthy recoveries. “Thanks to advances in technology, however, today we can offer our patients minimally-invasive interventions that provide relief from common chronic conditions with less risk and minimal down time.” Dr. Rivera stresses that common symptoms of sinusitis, such as an inflamed nose, sinuses and throat, lasting more than three months are cause for concern and medical intervention. “Anything that obstructs the air-filled pockets located behind the facial bones surrounding the nose can lead to a buildup of mucus, infection, and inflammation causing significant discomfort,” he said. “We offer several treatment options to our patients, depending on their individual conditions.” South Florida ENT offers the following procedures: Balloon Sinuplasty When patient’s sinus passages are blocked and medicine alone has failed, sinus surgery, performed under general anesthesia. would have been traditionally required. More recently, a minimally invasive procedure, that can be done in the office, is designed to unblock and dilate the sinus openings. Balloon sinuplasty was created for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis, this is a minimally invasive procedure conducted with local anesthesia. Inflamed sinuses are unblocked in a way similar to the method used by cardiologists to open up blocked arteries using balloon angioplasty. Sinuses remain open after the procedure allowing for the return of normal drainage, and, most important, sinus pressure relief. “For patients who want to avoid general anesthesia and the downtime required for healing after traditional sinus surgery, office dilation is a great option,” said Dr.Foster. This three-step process involves inserting a balloon catheter into the inflamed sinus, then inflating the balloon to expand that opening. Any infection or fluid in the sinus is then suctioned out. The system is removed during the final step, leaving the sinuses open. This treatment method is recommended for patients who have failed to get relief from medications. This procedure involves the use of a navigation system that safely guides the instruments into the sinuses. It is used to visualize the exact location of the instruments in the patient’s nose with three-dimensional diagnostic imaging. “Minimally invasive sinus treatment with navigation has revolutionized how obstructed sinuses are treated,” added Dr. Rivera, “and has been able to improve the quality of life for people suffering from sinusitis.” Cryotherapy Often patients with runny noses find relief from nasal sprays, but for others such an approach is not enough. Other patients do not want to avoid the side effects of staying on medications for months or years. As knowledge has grown about the anatomy of the nose and the influence of the nervous system, new office treatments have been developed to treat chronic runny noses. Some of these procedures take as little as 30 seconds. Cryotherapy, for example, is a treatment targeted at freezing those nerves that send signals to the tissues in the nose to produce mucus. The freezing interrupts these signals and reduces the production of mucus significantly. This cool temperature treatment is a solution for people dealing with chronic rhinitis with symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion and postnasal drip. Patients who have failed to gain relief from nasal sprays, drops or medications are often candidates for this treatment. Local anesthesia is applied, and most patients can return to normal activity the same day. In addition to the several minutes used to numb the area, the treatment itself only takes 30 seconds for each side of the nose. Most patients notice improvement within two to six weeks with minimal downtime. Turbinate Coblation Patients with nasal blockage that has not responded well to nasal medications or allergy treatments may be candidates for the turbinate coblation. This procedure reduces the size of the inferior turbinate or the soft tissue of a structure in the nose. During the procedure anesthetic spray and decongestant spray are applied to each nostril. Cotton soaked in anesthetic and decongestant medication is placed in each nostril. Much like a dental procedure, small doses of anesthetic are applied to ensure the nasal area is numb. A coblation device connected to a radio frequency generator is placed into the nose. It has a small electrode at the end, which is inserted into the turbinate. Once in place, radiofrequency is applied approximately two to three times to the turbinate tissue through the electrode. “In our practice, we have seen countless patients improve their lives by ending months, even years, of irritating nasal conditions with these simple minimally invasive procedures,” said Dr. Foster. “Our procedures use highly sophisticated technology to minimize side effects and maximize results,” added Dr. Rivera. To find out which procedure may offer relief for your condition, call to make an appointment at (305)-532-3878, (305) 531-763 or visit www.getENThelp.com. Locust Projects presents its last exhibitions in its Design District location before moving to Little River in 2023. True to the organization’s experimental nature, the final shows push the boundaries of traditional art spaces, featuring everything from a gallery turned indoor-soccer field, to a living room for gatherings to pay homage to those who have passed. The three exhibitions include commissioned installations by Ecuador-born/New York City-based Ronny Quevedo and Miami-based artist T. Eliott Mansa and a group exhibition guest curated by Donnamarie Baptsite featuring a selection of video works by Dimitry Saïd Chamy, Mikey Please, Duke Riley and Paul Ward. All are welcome to join us in the Miami Design District to celebrate the opening with a Meet the Artists Reception kicking off Miami Art Week on Tuesday, November 29 from 7-9pm.
