  • Art Advisor Rachel Cole Shines on Miami

Miami Living met with art advisor Rachel Cole ahead of the Aglaé Bassens “Emptiful” exhibition at the ICA Miami Museum, opening May 5th. The ICA Miami is presenting “Emptiful,” a debut solo museum presentation for Brooklyn–based painter Aglaé Bassens. With a practice deeply rooted in observation and critical analysis, Bassens creates wistful, meditative glimpses into everyday life. Alluring and poignant, Bassens’s enigmatic works often explore issues of spatial tension, materiality, and intimacy. With funding provided by Rachel Cole Art Advisory, the ICA Miami acquired one of the artist’s major works, Remote (2021), for its permanent collection in 2022. 1. Tell us about your background - when and why did you start Rachel Cole Art Advisory? My interest in art as a career was initially sparked through my undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. When I graduated and began working in the art world, I gained experience in different institutional settings but within a relatively short period of time I realized that I was meant to be art advising, and I eventually founded Rachel Cole Art Advisory in 2019. I love working at the nexus of artists and collectors; it’s a constant process of learning and discovery. I also very much enjoy working for myself and being in control of the quality of my services, so that I can be confident that I’m always offering the best. 2. What was your first memory of art? Art has always been a part of my life in a way that was woven into my childhood very organically. I don’t have a specific first memory of art, but my mother was a fashion designer and my father was a musician, and I always took painting classes from a young age. I do have vivid memories of the eclectic art that my parents had in our home, and I think all of this informs the way I look at art today. 3. Who is your favorite artist and do you have a favorite movement? My favorite artists from history are Édouard Manet and Gustave Courbet, but my favorite movement is Neoclassicism. In general, I love the way artwork makes connections throughout time, and now when I look at contemporary art, I am particularly attuned to work that draws lines between past and present. Jiab Prachakul, 5 a.m. for Berlin, 2021. Acrylic on canvas. Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Museum purchase with funds provided by Rahul M. Sabhnani. 4. You have devoted your life to promoting minority and historically underrepresented artists. What was the impetus for this? My own experience in the art world as a young, Mexican-American woman has played a large role in influencing the work I do today. I think we all need to be able to look around and find ourselves reflected back at us somewhere in the array of artwork that is being collected and exhibited. This also means committing myself not just to minority and historically underrepresented artists, but also to minority and historically underrepresented collectors. Beyond that, art is so much about seeing and noticing, and if we don’t look in the corners or at the margins, we are ultimately missing out on so much, and are not actually doing the critical work of seeing and noticing. 5. How did you become involved with the ICA Miami? I initially became involved with the ICA Miami through a donation of an artwork by artist Jiab Prachakul (represented by Micki Meng), funded by my wonderful collector, Rahul Sabhnani. Jiab’s gallerist, Micki, first introduced me to Alex Gartenfeld, the Artistic Director of the ICA Miami, and I have since worked on numerous donations with him. Alex and I check in with each other quite often, and I am continually impressed by the innovative work he is doing and the incredible impact he continues to have on the art world and Miami in particular. Sabhnani, Jeffrey Magid, and Ryan Lee. © Asif Hoque, Courtesy Yossi Milo Gallery, New York. Photo by Sh. 6. Tell us about the upcoming Aglae Bassens “Emptiful” exhibition and the artists you have placed in the museum. The Aglae Bassens “Emptiful” exhibition at the ICA Miami, which opens on May 5 and will be on view through October 29, is the first solo museum exhibition of work by Bassens, a Brooklyn-based painter. I have loved her work for years and first placed it in collections when large-scale canvases were only a few thousand dollars, and before she was receiving the incredible recognition that she so deservedly receives now. My husband and I, along with another collector of mine, Ryan Lee, donated the work featured in the show. It’s very rewarding to see an artist take off like that, and to have had the privilege of knowing her work since early in her career. Other artists I have helped placed in the ICA Miami’s collection include Kenturah Davis, Asif Hoque, Jarvis Joyland, Jeanette Mundt, and we’re working on a few others, almost all of which were due to the generosity of my collectors, specifically Rahul Sabhnani, Ryan Lee, and more. 7. How is the Miami art market/world unique/different from NY where you are based? The two are quite different, with the key difference being that while Miami has a vibrant art world throughout the year, the week of the annual Art Basel Miami art fair in December is really the epicenter of it all. People from all over the world converge to look at and purchase art and attend events. New York, on the other hand, has a steady flow of art fairs and exhibitions throughout the year, so the ebbs and flows are not as dramatic in New York as in Miami. 8. What services does your firm offer? RCAA provides services that cover every aspect of the art-buying process, from acquisitions to post-sale services, collection management, market research, and curatorial services. There are many steps involved in building and managing a collection, and my job is to oversee and execute all of them. 9. Who are your clients and do you have a dream client? My clients are all art collectors who work with me because they are committed to building and maintaining a meaningful art collection. As mentioned a little earlier, my dream clients are minority individuals (women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+). Particularly, I would love public figures who have enough of a platform to showcase their art on a large scale and inspire others to become more involved in art, whether that is as a collector, maker, or supporter. Jeanette Mundt, Winning, 2021. Oil on linen. Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami. Museum purchase with funds provided by Rahul M. Sabhnani. Image courtesy the artist and Société, Berlin. Photo by Trevor Good 10. Favorite places in Miami for art and design? Most inspiring and why? Without a doubt, the ICA Miami is my favorite place and is always my first stop when I am in Miami. But there are so many other incredible museums as well, like Pérez Art Museum and The Rubell Museum, to name two. I love the Design District for its galleries, fashion, and public art. Also, the collections like Rubell, Pérez, De la Cruz, Margulies, and more, who generously open their collections to the world. That said, most of my visits to Miami center around the Miami Basel fair week, so I tend to be quite busy when I am there. However, I aim to be in Miami more often to visit the many gems I have yet to see, like Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. There is so much there to be inspired by! 11. What’s coming up for Rachael Cole Art Advisory? I actually have two businesses that complement one another: Rachel Cole Art Advisory is well-established and is continuing to grow, and my new business, romulus, is launching soon. romulus is an art-tech platform that is designed to solve some of the current logistical barriers in the art world. The platform also provides a basic art world education, and connects new and established art world patrons. As an advisor, I work very closely with individuals who are committed to building an expansive collection that grows over time. With romulus, I am able to serve collectors at every stage, whether they are buying their first piece or looking to support an established collection. • Gucci Presents Its Next High Watchmaking Endeavour

Channelling the golden age of space travel and a passion for discovery, Gucci High Watchmaking now soars into the universe, unveiling exceptional timepieces that map and trace time in a way that’s uniquely Gucci. Set across five signature collections and featuring tourbillons, automatic movements and a new perpetual calendar among them, the novelties showcase Gucci’s precious heritage alongside its contemporary savoir-faire, where High Watchmaking expertise and excellence fuse with iconic codes of the House, avant-garde artistry and the most exceptional stones. G-TIMELESS PLANETARIUM Four kaleidoscopic designs enter the G-Timeless Planetarium, a collection that’s literally centred around the Dancing Hours Flying Tourbillon, GGC.1976.DS. Named after the Orion Nebula NGC 1976 – one of our galaxy’s brightest nebulas and which is visible from the naked eye – the tourbillon sits front and centre on the dial, set with a diamond-studded star. A start-and-stop function on the crown activates a rotation of 12 precious stones, each one spinning on itself in 9 seconds and orbiting clockwise around the dial in 90 seconds. In 2023, two lunar themed creations enter the space: one is set with 12 Ethiopian opals, their effervescence highlighted by a translucent blue background; the second a dreamlike, pastel melange of topaz, peridot, amethyst and Ethiopian opals. Another design travels to an otherworldly sunset of contrasting reds: rubies, fire opals, pink tourmaline and mandarin garnet. Finally, the brightest addition is a star-themed creation with four different types of stars, each punctuated with diamonds, which together encircle the central tourbillon star in a luminous explosion of light. G-TIMELESS DANCING BEES The G-Timeless Dancing Bees collection celebrates the bee motif, a tribute to life and nature that conquers the space. Here, 12 golden bees tremble on the dial, hypnotically fluttering and shimmering with the slightest movement of the wrist. For 2023, two exceptional stone dials pay tribute to Mother Earth and her singular beauty as our only living planet. The first features an intense turquoise dial that instantly recalls the greenish and deep blue water of the oceans seen by the space, as in the series of famous photographs taken during the spaceflights to the moon; the second captures lush, verdant lands with a vibrant pistachio green opal dial further galvanised by Gucci’s exquisite stone marquetry savoir-faire. Here, the fragile stones are first polished to a thickness of only 0.45mm before being cut into small, individual rectangles, which are then painstakingly laid on a mother-of-pearl plate of a just 0.15mm thick. The craftsmanship parallels the extreme precision and sophistication of the accompanying star-studded tourbillon, which rests within a diamond-set crescent at 12 o’clock. G-TIMELESS MOONLIGHT In 2023, Gucci’s sophisticated moonphase calibre GGV838.MP meets personal expression in a new made-to-order G-Timeless Moonlight, where a client’s specific place, time and date of birth are uniquely depicted on the watch. Clients start with six gemstones that reflect the astral map, linked to zodiac signs and the birthday planets’ position, which are paired with six diamonds that are alternately set on a rotating rehaut. The crown at 2 o’clock allows to activate the rotating rehaut that spins randomly, along with it the planets and gemstones. Further bespoke decoration comes courtesy of an internal ring that can be etched with up to five personal letters or characters, an oscillating weight displaying the client’s personal constellation and customisable alligator strap. A sparkling, deep blue aventurine glass dial layered over a thin mother-of-pearl disc further evokes the mystery and magic of our universe. The layered dial technique continues in two additional designs set with deep, intense tones, which further highlight the dialogue between the planets in our galaxy. A shimmering mother-of-pearl dial treated with an electric purple-blue lacquer brings forth the fire in a multicoloured opal moonphase disc. Meanwhile, a second design is more iridescent, thanks to a sliver of green aventurine glass set on a thin mother-of-pearl base, its purple-green effect contrasting the green opal moonphase disc below. GUCCI 25H In 2023, the iconic, ultra-thin GUCCI 25H collection goes from strength to strength. Up first is an openwork GUCCI 25H Skeleton Tourbillon that is masterfully set with baguette diamonds, including 60 diamonds on the dial’s floating bridges and 44 diamonds on the bezel. A flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock rotates every minute, and will perfectly align with the bridge once during its journey. Meanwhile, the winding stem can also be personalised with up to eight letters on each of the stem’s four sides. Sized at 40mm, the masterpiece comes in either 18kt pink or white gold, with matching gold skeleton hands and stylishly paired with either a deep cobalt or black alligator strap respectively. Also new, the GUCCI 25H Skeleton Tourbillon with coloured bridges and matching rubber straps is a bold colour statement. The watch’s components are coolly tinted: there’s an orange platine, pink flying tourbillon cage, purple barrel bridge and green minutery bridges, while an electric blue winding stem can also be customised with eight digits on each of its four sides. The colours are inspired by the rich hues represented in the geological map of the moon, a ground-breaking scientific and geological reference that depicts a magnified blueprint of the moon. Finally, the new GUCCI 25H with the perpetual calendar complication is powered by the GG727.25.PC calibre, which displays the time alongside days, months, years and moonphase (and which is accurate and won’t need adjusting to the year 2100). With a thickness of just 9.7mm, the watch’s architectural signature is echoed in the dial’s horizontal pattern, while the five-link bracelet or alligator strap are ergonomically designed for maximum comfort and fit. With a sporty attitude, the watch comes in three models with gold and steel finishes and propels the contemporary spirit of this iconic collection into its next chapter. • Meet Giselle: Miami’s Newest Resident

Have you heard about Giselle? Located above the well-known E11EVEN nightclub in the heart of Miami, this rooftop restaurant not only offers breathtaking views of the city but also a fine dining experience for late-night owls. Brought to life by E11EVEN and The Restaurant People, this sexy lady is here to make a name for herself. Made for those who appreciate good food—at any time of day or night—Giselle’s eclectic menu has something for everyone. The menu is inspired by French, Mediterranean and Asian cuisine—mix that with a touch of Miami’s vibrant flavor, and you’ve got magic. Chef Gustavo Zuluaga was inspired by many international influences to create a menu that embodies Miami, E11EVEN, and its people. To find a fine dining restaurant in the city where the kitchen closes at 2a.m., let alone a kitchen where you can get a Maine Lobster Fra Diavolo served at midnight, is a true a gem. While Miami has many great places to dine, many of them close their kitchens much earlier in the evening. Giselle Miami offers a dining experience like no other. The venue is ready for anything—an intimate dinner for two inside the main dining area, or a larger party looking to celebrate and make new friends in the outdoor lounge and terrace. Upon arrival, guests will take the private elevator up to the rooftop where a hostess will be ready to greet them: Welcome to Giselle. On the terrace, the swanky restaurant has beautiful marble dining tables, classic neon pink signs on the wall, a prominent bar with lush greens hanging from the top, and above it all unfolds a retractable roof—allowing guest to visit even if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The terrace is a fantastic space to mingle and admire the Miami skyline. Try a cocktail or two, all cleverly named to keep up with Giselle’s sexy vibe. Maybe you start the night with a Make Me Blush—where the waitress will perfume your drink on the spot—and end with 11:11 Wish—served in a fun ceramic mug with cotton candy on top, just what you wished for! Inside the main dining area, also called the Dream Room, the walls and the ceiling feature elaborately carved baroque detailing—a beautiful work of art resembling French lace. Your time at Giselle will be over-the-top, a decadent eating experience unlike any other. The menu is broken up into five sections. To start the night off, under The Finer Things, the Clase & Caviar Bump will set the scene for what’s to come. Think of a tequila shot, but you chase it with with caviar. First Glance will be where you find your appetizers—there are so many great options. The Chilled Shrimp Cocktail is served over a bed of crushed ice—these oversized shrimps have just the right amount of flavor and the perfect texture. The Bluefin Tuna Truffle Cones are probably my favorite presentation of tuna—ever. The miniature cones sit on top of a bowl of sesame seeds, with freshly “scooped” tuna, topped with shaved truffle, and sprinkled with a touch of gold. It’s the perfect little bite. Finally, the Truffle Toast will feature the largest shaved pieces of truffle you’ll ever see. The Seaduction section of the menu is where you will find one of my favorites, the Crispy Whole Snapper—served in all its glory, this beauty is inspired by Peruvian cuisine and features salsa criolla as well as aji amarillo aioli. Don’t be intimidated, just dig in. The Desire section of the menu is made for the meat lovers—from Filet Mignon to NY Strip— and if you would like to indulge, the Japanese A5 is a mouthwatering experience. Finally, there is no better way to end the night than with a little thing from the Pleasures list. A new twist on the classic tres leches dessert, Giselle’s Pearls is made with not tres, not cuatro, but seis leches and topped with delicious gold and silver pearls. Whatever your plans are, Giselle Miami is the place to be and feel like a superstar—who knows, maybe you’ll see one! • Little Lighthouse Foundation, South Florida’s Top Volunteer Organization, Aims To Continue Expanding

The Little Lighthouse Foundation (LLF) is a nonprofit organization that assists underserved children and their families throughout South Florida. The goals LLF sets out to achieve each year are to fulfill the mission with proprietary programming and concepts with the support of like-minded partners and individuals, create accessible and diverse volunteer opportunities for those actively looking to donate their time, and bring smiles and impactful experiences to the underprivileged youth of South Florida. The Little Lighthouse Foundation started in 2004 when LLF Founder Robert Sena moved from New York City to Miami and operated the Miami chapter of his favorite New York City-based organization. In 2010, he decided it was in the best interest of the facilities and children he served in the Miami area to create an organization based and operated in South Florida. Recruiting the help of active LLF board members and co-founders Aaron Resnick and Charlie Venturi, LLF was born in January 2010. LLF then launched its first program, Adopt-a-Meal, at Ronald McDonald House Charities (“RMHC”) where volunteers serve meals to the families of children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. The leader behind LLF’s goals is executive director, Jonathan Babicka. Babicka has concentrated his life’s work on the needs of children and their families while bringing to light issues such as food insecurity that are near and dear to his heart. Being an active philanthropist, Babicka is involved in a variety of incredible charities in South Florida, and the Little Lighthouse Foundation has always been one of Babicka’s favorites. “With the Little Lighthouse Foundation, the team is limitless in what we can do to promote good,” says Babicka. “What most excites me about my work is being a part of a movement. It’s at the highest level of being a conscious human being. We do service, we bring people together through events and creative marketing. It’s all in an effort to be the best versions of ourselves. People gravitate to the Little Lighthouse Foundation as their vehicle to give back.” LLF has over 20 proprietary programs with 33 partner facilities, including, but not limited to, homeless shelters, hospitals, and youth centers. MHA provides a safe, academically sound and socially supportive environment for all learners. With its new building, MHA significantly extended its offerings by providing an accredited school incorporating research-based best practices. Some of MHA’s features include a technology-driven STEAM curriculum; dedicated, highly-skilled staff and educators with low student to teacher ratios; extended school day for students; daily healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks; extracurricular activities fostering healthy social-emotional growth and personal development, educational field trips, after-school programming, summer camp experiences, and on-site counseling and therapeutic services. Each child who continues his or her education to graduate from high school will receive a two-year college scholarship from the Jack & Jill Center Opportunity Scholarship Fund. The sponsorship is graciously funded by Steve and Madelaine Halmos. For more information about Jack & Jill visit www.jackandjillcenter.org. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Jack & Jill

  • Craig Zinn of Craig Zinn Automotive Group Initiates Animal Assisted Therapy Endowment

Continuing its dedication to giving back to the South Florida community, President and CEO Craig Zinn of Craig Zinn Automotive Group (CZAG) has initiated an animal assisted therapy endowment at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. CZAG will fund the initial needs of the program, while building the endowment of $500,000 to provide income from interest and fund the program in perpetuity. Upon seeing how valuable and joy-filled the hospital’s Animal Assisted Therapy Program is to so many young patients, CZAG wanted to ensure the program is funded in perpetuity. Animal assisted therapy has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and provide a sense of comfort and companionship to patients, including children. The endowment provides necessary funding to purchase an additional therapy dog for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, as well as supplemental costs associated with having an additional handler on staff at the hospital. “We couldn’t be happier to deepen our relationship with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital through our animal assisted therapy endowment,” said Zinn. “For more than four decades, we have made community giving a priority across all of our dealerships. Our success comes through our deep-rooted relationships and giving back to the community.” “We would like to thank Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for doing extraordinary, life changing work in the community and look forward to seeing our relationship grow,” he continued. “We are so grateful to Craig Zinn and the entire team at CZAG for their unwavering support of our children, families and our team,” said Caitlin Stella, CEO, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “This is simply a pawfect gift! Our therapy dogs are an integral part of our care team, offering love, encouragement, and a sense of calm that only they can offer. They help create a fun and child-friendly healing environment that motivates and encourages patients to reach their goals. We cannot do what we do without support from donors like CZAG and the Zinn Family. We are so thankful!” CZAG’s initiatives include other year-round opportunities to impact the lives of the young patients and their families staying at the hospital. While CZAG has supported countless organizations and charities throughout the community for more than 40 years, South Florida’s Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Healthcare System have become an enduring source of inspiration to Craig Zinn and CZAG. CZAG is also the proud donor of the “Short Stop” at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Room. The “Short Stop” is an area dedicated to quick care and is designed to treat minor emergencies and allow for quick discharges. In 2021, the area was renamed Craig Zinn Automotive Group Shortstop to honor CZAG’s continued commitment to the hospital and its programs. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Craig Zinn Automotive Group

  • Arielle Assouline-Lichten of Slash Objects Presents “Ana” Chair with Serafini During Milan Design

“Simplicity that reveals the materials from which our world is constructed. This chair is a play on the art of simplicity and the beauty of clean lines. I wanted to create a statement piece that envelopes you into a moment of pause, where you are nestled inside the smooth stone arms. The purity of parts allows for the materials to be highlighted and the connections between parts is as minimal as possible to allow each element to exist in unison.” - Arielle Assouline-Lichten, Slash Objects Designer Arielle Assouline-Lichten, founder of Slash Objects, created the Ana Chair as an interpretation of a classic silhouette with a focus on new materials and minimalism. The Ana Chair is a unique take on a statement chair that brings timeless materials together in a new way. The Chair is made using two marble slabs, connected with brass hardware and elegant details to hold the recycled rubber seat in place. Gravity pulls the seat to emphasize its natural curve between the marble slabs. The simplicity of the pieces connected by clean lines calls into question the very nature of a chair. The experience inside the chair is to be enveloped in the textures of the stone and the upholstery, at once elevated by them and also cocooned. Arielle sourced remnant marble, drawing inspiration from the movement of the natural veining in each stone which makes each chair unique. She views the composition of the marble chair as a canvas, cutting the slab into squares that, when rearranged, relate to a previous whole. Made in New York City, the Ana Chair highlights how materials interact with one another through minimal connections and clean lines. A signature of Arielle’s designs, she looks to find innovative ways to recycle materials. In addition to the seat being made of post consumer recycled rubber, the marble used is repurposed cutoffs from other jobs that would have ultimately been discarded; sourced from a yard in Brooklyn. Multiple Chairs can be created from one slab, thereby creating a set or a pair which relate to one another. The Ana chair is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The outdoor version utilizes marble and the recycled rubber also found throughout Slash Objects’ tabletop collection, exploring its limits and scale. The indoor version features Arielle’s first foray into using Mohair. The use of Mohair, specifically in Arielle’s chosen Cognac shade, introduces bold colors into her furniture collection for the first time. The use of marble celebrates the raw beauty extracted from the Earth and a uniqueness in that no two pieces can be exactly the same. The marble of the Ana chair is available in Statuary White, Nero Marquina and Pistache, and can also be customizable using a variety of stones, while the rubber seat is available in Sand, Gris and Pure Black. A wide variety of Mohair color options are available. Customizing with COM Fabric can also be accommodated. “This chair is a play on the art of simplicity and the beauty of clean lines. I wanted to create a statement piece that envelopes you into a moment of pause, where you are nestled inside the smooth stone arms. The purity of parts allows for the materials to be highlighted and the connections between parts is as minimal as possible to allow each element to exist in unison.” - Arielle Assouline-Lichten, Slash Objects The Ana Chair makes its European Debut with Serafini during Milan Design Week in April 2023.. Invited as one of 7 designers to design new and exclusive furniture for Serafini, the Ana Chair takes on a new contour with softer curves and textures. Now available for the European market in new color was and materials. More on Arielle Assouline-Lichten/Slash Objects Arielle Assouline-Lichten is an artist, architect, and designer.
