  • FGO’s HOPE Offers Tickets, Transportation, And “Rich Cultural Experience” to Local School Children

Florida Grand Opera is seeking South Florida middle and high school students to enjoy opera performances. FGO’s HOPE (Having an Opera Experience) is an educational program that provides tickets and transportation to over 5,000 Miami-Dade and Broward County students to experience the thrill of live opera for each of three final mainstage dress rehearsals or opening nights throughout the season. Schools can apply to receive free bus service (availability is limited by available funding). “It is monumentally important that we get kids exposed to opera early and often because it really is such an all-encompassing art form,” says Lauren Frick, Florida Grand Opera’s Education Coordinator. “Through opera, we experience music, language, history, art, science, theater, culture, interpersonal relationships, and the list could continue on and on. I’m very proud of our work and dedication to have more and more students in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties discovering the magic, and finding the relevant connections that opera can have in their life year after year. If you are an educator who has never taken advantage of this opportunity, I encourage you to jump in with both feet and help orchestrate a new world of creativity and possibility for your students.” In the 2023-24 season, schools have the opportunity to bring their students to three performances: Verdi’s La traviata, Leoncavallo’s I pagliacci, and Puccini’s La bohème. They will attend final dress rehearsals at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami or opening night at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. “The Florida Grand Opera HOPE Program has been life-changing for my students,” says Stephanie Hurst, a teacher at Youth Co-Op Preparatory School. “We have attended this program for the past two years, and the opportunity has turned my students into opera aficionados. As a Title I school, many of my students have recently arrived in the USA and most of them lack the resources to access a cultural program such as this. I have turned around in my seat at the Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Arsht Center to see my students moved to tears and viewing these marvelous performances with their mouths hanging open. There is no way to quantify what this opportunity has meant to my students. Parents have told me that they never dreamed that their child would be able to have such a rich cultural experience at such a young age. It truly means the world to my students.” The opera experience includes a Q&A with staff members at intermission, a free souvenir playbill, and a souvenir silicone bracelet. At the Broward Center, participants may also attend a free pre-performance lecture and a post-show talkback with staff and special guests. Each school also has the option of a free in-school opera preview by a member of the artistic staff. The staff member will travel to the school for a special presentation including a synopsis of the opera, theater, and opera etiquette, historical relevance, production elements, vocal categories, and composition style. Each presentation is carefully tailored to the student's needs and ages. “My students saw the Gianni Schicchi/Buoso's Ghost double bill last year and they thoroughly enjoyed the story, the singing, and the acting,” says choir director Alex Toussaint of Hialeah High School. “To this day, they still quote ‘O Dio’ in a dramatic way whenever something inconvenient happens in class. They cannot wait to see more shows this season. I want to thank FGO immensely for their commitment to student outreach in our school district and helping schools come see these shows.” The HOPE program has been made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, as well as the Broward County Cultural Division, the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Janet Trager Salz Charitable Trust. Additional funding for this programming has been received from Funding Arts Network (FAN) and The Community Foundation of Broward has provided support for FGO's Youth Education programming. Schools interested in participating in FGO’s HOPE program should contact Lauren Frick by emailing lfrick@fgo.org or calling 786-438-2717. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Florida Grand Opera

  • Avianca Airlines Unveils New Brand Concept and Reinvention Results

After nearly two years of transformation since its successful exit from Chapter 11 and under the slogan, “the sky belongs to everyone,” avianca airlines unveiled its new brand. After 104 years of operation, being the second oldest airline in the world, avianca bid farewell to the uppercase “A” and welcomed the lowercase “a” as a symbol of a company that, by combining the best of its over 100 years of flying with the practicality and flexibility of the modern low-cost world, has ceased to be for a few and is now for everyone. "The more than 180 days that our planes spent on the ground due to the COVID-19 pandemic were dark days,” said Adrian Neuhauser, CEO of avianca. “We knew that our airline was at risk of disappearing, as was the connectivity of the countries and regions where we operated and the jobs we generated. But it was also during that time that we saw that it was not only possible but also necessary to achieve a different avianca, one that is more open, closer, more accessible, and with more for everyone. After nearly two years, that new avianca is here.". Neuhauser added, "This is perhaps the greatest reinvention of an airline in the history of aviation. That's why today we say hello to avianca in lowercase and goodbye to the uppercase 'A' of the past. This is a brand that honors our history and at the same time represents what we are today, a renewed avianca: friendly, agile, accessible, attentive, and cheerful. An avianca that looks you in the eye and calls you by your name. An avianca where everyone is welcome and where the sky belongs to all." The new avianca is the result of the strategic projects that have been implemented to date to become a more efficient, competitive and sustainable airline, including: More first-time customers flying, with more seats and better prices: 20% more capacity in the A320 fleet with 180 seats for everyone 39 million seats available in 24 countries 32.5 million passengers flying throughout the network in 2023 16% of the customers are flying for the first time with avianca avianca's customers fly on time and arrive with all their luggage: Punctuality (OTP): 89.8%, the most punctual in the world for September (Cirium) Compliance (SC): 99.6% Baggage irregularities (MB): 1.36 per 1,000 customers Fewer aircraft types, a simplified fleet: Only two types of aircraft: A320 and 787, with a total passenger fleet of 140 aircraft More airplanes arriving to increase capacity: 16 more A320 aircraft starting this month and an additional 100 A320neo aircraft from 2025 The regions in Colombia are more connected than ever: 31.9 million seats available in Colombia, with more than 26.9 million customers flying within and outside the country in 2023 21.8 million seats available in Colombia's regions, with more than 18.0 million customers flying in 2023 More customers choosing how they want to fly and paying only for what they need: 4 sizes in Economy (XS, S, M, L) and one in Business (XXL) for flights in America 3 sizes in Economy (S, M, L) and one in Business (XXL) for flights in Europe 15 additional products and services for customization More people flying to new destinations with fewer layovers: 146 routes, 74 destinations, and 24 countries in operation by the end of 2023 26 new routes in 2023, including eight new destinations: Ipiales, Cusco, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas and Oakland A more sustainable operation for our environment: 25% less carbon footprint per passenger transported, mainly thanks to fleet simplification and the reconfiguration of the A320 aircraft More travelers enjoying LifeMiles, the most recognized loyalty program in the region: 12.4 million members 11 Avianca lounges in Colombia and El Salvador available to everyone Avianca Cargo in the Top 3 of cargo airlines in the Americas: 258,000 tons of cargo transported to and from the region 34% more tons of flowers delivered to the world on Mother's Day and Valentine's Day For more information visit: www.avianca.com By ML Staff. • Unveiling Think Hospitality: An Exclusive Interview with CEO Shawn Vardi

Miami Living recently had an insightful conversation with Shawn Vardi, CEO of Think Hospitality, as we delved into the remarkable journey of a company that started with one property in South Florida and has now grown to manage an impressive portfolio of 24 properties in just 13 years. In this exclusive interview, we explore Think Hospitality's strategies, its unique approach to balancing ownership and profitability, and its commitment to sustainability in the hospitality industry. Miami Living (ML): Can you share the story of how you and your partners grew Think Hospitality from managing one property in South Florida to 24 properties in just 13 years? What were the key milestones along the way? Shawn Vardi (SV): The transformation of our company, originally focused on real estate development and operations, took a significant turn in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the temporary operational shutdown, we recognized that our economies of scale were a paramount asset. Since the onset of the pandemic, we have seen remarkable growth, expanding from 400 units to over 1,500 hotel rooms. A key contributor to our success has been our steadfast commitment to fostering a strong corporate culture and retaining our valuable staff. Additionally, our proficient back office and sales teams provide resources that independent entities often struggle to afford. ML: Could you elaborate on the specific strategies or practices that Think Hospitality employs to differentiate itself in the competitive hotel management industry? SV: Our corporate culture stands as one of our most prized assets. We annually host an employee Olympics event, attended by over 1,000 employees, offering cash prizes of up to $25,000 per year. This initiative has effectively addressed the challenges of staffing during a period of substantial growth. Our commitment to promoting from within has established a robust career path for our employees, with 85% of our C-suite comprising individuals who started in entry-level positions. Our size and sales practices have earned us an invitation to join the board of the GMCVB, significantly strengthening our group business, surpassing that of any independent entity. Our revenue management practices significantly outperform the competition, contrasting with those who often outsource this function to sole proprietors. Our revenue management team is highly competitive and capable, even against larger competitors. ML: You mentioned a dual role as CEO, representing owners while focusing on profits. How do you balance these two roles effectively, and what have been the results of this approach in terms of growth and profitability? SV: In essence, our guiding principle is to act as owners, prioritizing the best interests of the ownership group. This approach has yielded rapid growth over the past three years. ML: Think Hospitality offers a range of services, including reservations, revenue management, sales & marketing, finance & accounting, branding & design, and food & beverage. Can you highlight some of the unique aspects or innovative strategies within these service areas that have contributed to Think Hospitality's success? SV: Throughout our journey, we have consistently reinvested in technology and human talent across all facets of our operations. Our accounting department, boasting over 60 professionals, is widely regarded as the best in the industry. Our revenue team excels in understanding the seasonal fluctuations of our business. Our distinct approach to managing food and beverage sets us apart, as few entities manage both hotels and F&B. We tailor F&B concepts to individual assets, focusing on the unique customer base and positioning of each property. This core competency has been instrumental in the success of our F&B offerings. ML: As Miami is known for its vibrant food scene, can you tell us more about Think Hospitality's approach to food & beverage and the role it plays in enhancing the guest experience? SV: Quality sourcing of products and food is at the heart of our F&B concept. We prioritize fresh, non-frozen items, differentiating us from most restaurants focused on profit margins. This strategy has not only maintained quality but also attracted more clientele to our F&B establishments. As we expand our culinary division, we continually upgrade our existing restaurants. ML: Sustainability is an increasingly important aspect of the hospitality industry. How is Think Hospitality incorporating sustainability into its operations and contributing to a more eco-conscious approach within the industry? SV: Furthermore, all of our to-go items are biodegradable, including forks, knives, and straws made from materials like sugarcane and bamboo. ML: Think Hospitality manages a diverse portfolio of properties. Could you share some examples of standout success stories or projects that exemplify the company's approach and values? SV: Notably, we recently assumed management of the Costa Hollywood property from a previous operator. Within the first three months, we achieved their projected 2022 EBITDA, and the property is now on track to triple its EBITDA in our first 12 months of management. This particular asset, a condominium-hotel with various retail outlets, parking, a rooftop pool, and a restaurant, benefited from our deep understanding of real estate and our ability to introduce efficiencies the prior operator could not match. ML: What is your vision for the future of Think Hospitality, and how do you see the company evolving in the coming years in response to changing industry dynamics and guest preferences? SV: Additionally, we recently inaugurated the Showboat in Atlantic City, featuring a 150,000-square-foot indoor waterpark, a 900-unit arcade, and a 1,200-key hotel. Our company's versatility and scalability have allowed us to take on diverse projects, and we anticipate the inclusion of New York in our future endeavors. By ML Staff. • The Art of Uchi Miami

Opening in Miami’s art-filled Wynwood district in early 2021, Uchi Miami has made a splash in the creative community over the last two years, thanks to its non-traditional Japanese menu and design-centric interiors. Founded by James Beard Award‑winning chef Tyson Cole, Uchi (“house” in Japanese) strikes a delicate balance between elegant cuisine and impeccable service. While there are many omakase and sushi-centric restaurants throughout Miami’s diverse culinary scene, there’s a reason Uchi stands out ( TimeOut called it a “darling from the start”). At Uchi, each dish is a modern art piece. Just as an artist assembles a perfectly structured work, Uchi’s talented chefs craft each dish with a meticulous hand and creative eye. Take the Sake Toro Crudo , for example. The cool-temperature dish comprises six delicately arranged pieces of salmon belly topped with lychee and ginger over a shallow pool of passion fruit zu (vinegar). Flower petals and greenery garnish the salmon as the finishing touch. The blend is almost too beautiful to eat, but once it enters guests’ mouths, the intricate layers of flavor and texture dance on their taste buds. And let’s not forget about the desserts. Uchi’s most popular selection is the Jasmine Cream , a floral beauty with notes of jasmine under layers of honey tuile, cilantro granita and pineapple. It is served on a sleek wooden tray within a glass display case (à la the rose in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast ). Uchi Miami’s commitment to integrating Floridian flavors is evidenced by how tropical flavor profiles run rampant across the food and beverage menus. The carefully crafted cocktails incorporate Japanese spirits with global ingredients. For example, the spicy yet tropical Tsurai mixes Astral Tequila, passion fruit, aperol and Thai chili, while the milk-clarified Oyabun pairs pineapple oleo with shishito-infused Mezcal Unión and Strega. Meanwhile, the Uchi G&T is Uchi’s most classic choice, a mix of Fords Gin, yuzu cordial and tonic garnished with a slice of dry citrus. Guests can also find an extensive catalog of Japanese and local beers, a diverse list of wines (including dessert wines) and an expansive sake menu that doesn’t discriminate. The sake menu is classified by flavor profile for ease of reference: nigori, crisp, floral, earthy and robust. The menu also includes the English moniker alongside the original Japanese name to provide insight into each sake’s taste and aroma. While the drink selection may seem robust at first glance, diners can find relief from the expert servers practiced in the art of guiding each guest in selecting the perfect pairing. Uchi’s thoughtfully designed interiors subtly integrate organic elements and a modern aesthetic. Materials such as metal, concrete and rope are softened by a neutral color palette, warm walnut paneling, cream sherpa banquettes, brightly colored botanical wallcoverings and soft accent lighting to achieve a simplicity that pairs well with the equally refined menu. Much of the handiwork was done by local Miami artists and artisans. The towering cinder-block wall at the entrance was a partnership between DRM Custom Masonry (bricks), AWN Architectural Woodwork Institute (steel structure) and artist and sculptor Vas Bets (handwoven rope). The exterior graffiti installations are by local talents, the decor is by artist and textile designer Elan Byrd and the custom woodwork is from Holz Wood Shop . Uchi is owned and operated by Hai Hospitality , the James Beard Award-winning Austin, Texas-based restaurant group that set out to give Miami a taste of what it offered its audience in 2003 when it opened the original Uchi location in Austin. Uchi Miami marks Hai Hospitality’s first Florida venture; in 2024, it will open its second with the anticipated launch of Uchiko in Miami Beach. Meaning “son of Uchi,” the restaurant will offer an expansion of Uchi’s menu with the addition of wood-fired, yakitori-grilled dishes. Guests looking to experience Uchi Miami’s artful elegance can visit daily from 5-11 p.m., with happy hour from 5-6:30 p.m. Reservations are encouraged. Black Travel Summit (BTS) introduces National Black Travel Day (November 11), a new holiday dedicated to celebrating, honoring, and uplifting the global Black travel community. National Black Travel Day is a day for Black travelers and travel professionals to celebrate diversity, their impact, future, and culture in travel. It is an homage to the Black travel movement; a reminder for allies, and supporters, but also for the community that diversity in travel isn’t a trend that ends, it’s necessary for a brighter future for all who travel. Following the summit’s annual in-person conference in October, National Black Travel Day continues BTS’ mission of progressing the Black travel movement through unique initiatives and community-building, involving key leaders and new ideas in the space. BTS founder, Anita Francois, chose the date of November 11 to honor the birthdate of Jamaican American pilot and fellow Miami native Captain Barrington Irving, who became the first and only Black person to fly around the world solo in 2007. With National Black Travel Day, BTS hopes to instill pride in Black travel professionals and travelers and encourage the continued growth of this market. Black Travel Summit will kick off the first National Black Travel Day commemoration with a private launch event at sponsor, Red Rooster Overtown in Miami. Located in a historic Black neighborhood, which once played host to legends like Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Ella Fitzgerald, Red Rooster Overtown honors the area’s history through comfort food, music, and art. “Black Travel Summit was founded with the aim of elevating and strengthening the presence of the Black travel community each and every day. With National Black Travel Day, we’re thrilled to recognize the importance of the global Black diaspora and culture in travel” said Anita Francois, founder and CEO of Black Travel Summit. The 2023 Black Travel Summit will take place this October 20 to 22 at Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami, with an exciting weekend of professional development, networking, and fun bond-building activities. Attendees will enjoy a speaker series featuring top Black travel leaders and tastemakers, workshops, and add-on experiences including a yacht brunch and gala.
