- Designer Lara Bohinc Awarded Miami Design District's 2023 Annual Design Commission
London-based designer, Lara Bohinc, of Bohinc Studio, will be taking over the Miami Design District this year with her winning concept Utopia – an immersive installation of functional sculptures that realise a vision of sustainable urban living, creating public spaces where people and nature harmoniously coexist. The other-worldly installations are made from cork and will be unveiled in November 2023 throughout the Design District, ahead of Miami Art Week. Commissioned in collaboration with Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab, Bohinc’s sculptures will also greet visitors at the entrance of the international collectible design fair Design Miami/ from 5th December 2023. Utopia is Bohinc Studio’s first public commission in the US and spans four installations featuring irregular, bulbous forms reminiscent of growing cellular organisms and lifeforms. Friendly and dynamic, the sculptures are suggestive of living objects, mushrooming across the district with their kind yet mysterious presence. The colourful and tactile sculptures include outdoor seaters, tables, and imposing three-metre tall light sculptures, placed within proximity to create intimate and comforting resting places. A constellation of nine hundred egg-shaped birdhouses will be interspersed among the tree branches, providing colourful refuge and shade for local wildlife. Echoing the function of the birdhouses, a giant, centrepiece two-metre tall egg-form will provide a playful hideout for small children. At night, the solar-powered sculptures will come to life and create an atmospheric luminous glow. Painted by hand in vibrant pastel hues of pistachio, aqua, lavender, cherry blossom and eggshell blue, Bohinc’s designs pay homage to Miami’s architectural colour palette and bring elements of playfulness, functionality and comfort to the outdoor areas that the installations inhabit. With a focus on environmental issues, Bohinc’s pieces are made from cork – a natural, waterproof and environmentally friendly material, native to Portugal, constructed with the assistance of a 5D robotic milling machine and completed by hand. The thought-provoking sculptures invite passers-by to interact with their functional forms and clustered together, conceptualise a utopian future that questions how we might better engage with the natural world. Intermingling with the District’s walkways and enlivening the public spaces as a place to convene, the organic objects become a living thread, engaging with the native trees and architecture to create a place of reflection for visitors. Lara Bohinc says, “I am honored to be awarded Miami Design District's Annual Design Commission this year. This is my largest work to date and my first public commission in the U.S.A. It has been a wonderful process creating these organic and colorful forms for this Installation, and truly rewarding to see them come to life in such a sustainable way. I’m proud to be a part of Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab's esteemed group of commissioned designers, and can't wait to finally see Utopia come to life in the Miami Design District as well as Design Miami/.” Grela Orihuela, Senior Vice President, Fairs, Design Miami/ says, “It was a true pleasure to join forces with the Miami Design District and, through Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab, invite artists and designers to share their proposals to transform the Design District with an immersive installation during Art Week this December. We received innovative and thought-provoking submissions from around the world and look forward with great anticipation to seeing the wonderfully talented work of this year’s nominated designer, Lara Bohinc, come to life in the Miami Design District and at our flagship fair in Miami Beach.” Craig Robins, President and CEO of DACRA says, "Art possesses an extraordinary power to transfigure our surroundings, and this year, in partnership with the exceptional talent of Lara Bohinc, our installation promises to be nothing short of mesmerizing. As we embrace the convergence of creativity, culture, and urban design, by offering a dynamic platform for artists to reshape our landscape, we also continue to elevate our community and strengthen Miami’s ever evolving art scene.” The Miami Design District Commission--an annual initiative in its 9th year--invites creatives to enliven the neighbourhood at a time of the year where the communities of art and design convene in the city for Miami Art Week. Utopia will remain publicly installed until mid-2024. About Studio Bohinc After a decade-long stint with Cartier, exploring sculpture through jewellery, Lara Bohinc embarked upon creating functional pieces for living. Finding the larger medium so compelling following a series of private commissions, Bohinc launched her own studio in 2016 to dedicate her practice to object and furniture design. Working with wood, glass, metals, marble, ceramics and textiles, among other materials, the studio creates work of iconic beauty that honors traditional principles of craft and employs expertise in material and manufacturing techniques. Function fused with modernity forms the genesis of Bohinc’s contemporary design practice, feeding an obsession with the deconstruction and reconfiguration of form, expressed in the finest materials. Bohinc’s signature is a mix of contradictions: bold yet light, graphic yet fluid, angular yet feminine. To learn more visit www.bohincstudio.com By ML staff. Images courtesy of Bohinc.

- Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Hosts Gala In The Garden 2024, “Natural Wonders”
Celebrating a legacy of over 30 years as a spectacular fundraising event in South Florida, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is pleased to announce the return of Gala in the Garden, taking place on Saturday, February 3, 2024. Set amid the dazzling array of tropical flowers and the lush foliage of Fairchild Garden, the largest tropical botanic garden in the United States, it’s no wonder this breathtaking event is noted as one of the “Top Five Must Attend” galas by Miami Magazine. Gala in the Garden is a distinguished affair that draws South Florida’s most influential philanthropists and community leaders. Its renowned reputation and limited capacity make it a sell-out event months in advance. Each year, the lakeside venue is reimagined by a team of talented artists who create glamorous décor and delicious cuisine. This black-tie formal begins Gala in the Garden Press Release 2024 with a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by a seated dinner overlooking Pandanus Lake and dancing to a full orchestra under the stars. This year, Fairchild celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Fairchild Challenge® with particular attention to one of its unique programs, Growing Beyond Earth®, in partnership with NASA, a science project unlike any other in the world. “Growing Beyond Earth has allowed us to have the students across the nation actively contributing to real-world research, finding solutions to challenges that exist for growing plants in space and on Earth while instilling an appreciation and understanding of the value and importance of plants, states Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Director of Education, Amy Padolf. “I find my students learn best when they have a real connection to the lesson. My students understand that NASA values and is using the data that they collect. This takes Growing Beyond Earth to education growing beyond the classroom,” states Regina Smart, a Teacher at Westlake Senior High School in Westlake, Louisiana. “Growing Beyond Earth is important because it is citizen science at its finest. My students are able to take the science that they are learning and actually have an emotional connection and value to the work they are doing.” Gala in the Garden: Natural Wonders is chaired by Raphael Bastian and Barbara Tria. Joyce J Burns serves as Philanthropic Chair and Swanee DiMare is Honorary Chair. This year's event will also introduce The DiMare Medal, conferred in honor of Paul and Swanee DiMare. - ARTECHOUSE Announces New Exhibition "Future Sketches / Code Poems" Opening During Miami Art Week
A pioneer in innovative, experiential art, ARTECHOUSE is opening a digital art exhibition titled “Future Sketches / Code Poems” by renowned artist and educator Zach Lieberman. The exhibition marks the next chapter in Lieberman's journey, exploring the poetry within computation and pushing the boundaries of creative coding as an expressive medium. The exhibition will open to the public during Miami Art Week on December 6, 2023, and remain on display through May 2024. Photo credit: Zach Lieberman ARTECHOUSE's collaboration with Lieberman represents the latest in its series of groundbreaking collaborations with visionary artists working at the intersection of art and technology. “Future Sketches / Code Poems” builds upon the success of Lieberman's inaugural solo exhibition at ARTECHOUSE DC in 2020. Through a series of installations, Lieberman and his MIT Media Lab students reveal the poetry in computation, and encourage visitors to let their boundless imaginations take the lead when it comes to modern technology. "In a world driven by innovation, ‘Future Sketches / Code Poems’ underscores the importance of fostering artistic innovation,” said Sandro Kereselidze, founder and Chief Creative Officer of ARTECHOUSE. “We are thrilled to showcase Zach Lieberman's pioneering work. This collaboration continues ARTECHOUSE's commitment to pushing the boundaries of experiential art, celebrating the dynamic intersection of creativity and technology." Listed as one of Fast Company’s “Most Creative People” and a dynamic pioneer in interactive media and coding, Lieberman creates artwork with code and focuses on building experimental drawing and animation tools. Drawing from over a decade of work and research in media art, the exhibition explores how technology can transform the human body, voice, and gesture in expressive and imaginative ways. “I believe that the projects should never be about technology,” stated Zach Lieberman. “Technology should always be in service of the idea. The idea should be something that is poetic or that tells us about what it means to be human. When I create work, I don’t want people to point at it and say, ‘that’s amazing software.’ I want them to say, ‘that’s a beautiful idea, that helped me see in a new way, or that made my day better.’” A distinctive aspect of the exhibition, Lieberman's students from the MIT Media Lab will be involved and contribute their work to the showcase. Photo credit: Clarissa Villondo The exhibition will be divided into 19 distinctive installations that allow visitors to explore how code plays a role in creativity. Concepts covered include creative process and iteration, body and performance, painting with your voice, and augmented reality masks. Through his art, Lieberman displays human gestures and amplifies them in different ways, such as by making drawings come to life, imagining what the voice might look like if we could see it, and transforming silhouettes into music. “Future Sketches / Code Poems” will leave visitors asking, “How can computers help us understand what is human and unique about us?” and “What does code feel like?” ARTECHOUSE is open Thursday-Monday, 1-8 p.m. Visitors who book online save on admission tickets. General admission tickets start at $25 for adults and $17 for children ages 4-15, while children under 4 enter free. Florida residents save $5 off admission tickets Monday-Friday (proof of residency required). For tickets and more information, visit artechouse.com. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of ARTECHOUSE

The student superheroes have returned! Recently, students from American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program, from both of their Broward and Palm Beach campuses, donned their capes and organized the 24th Annual Superhero Party at the Salah Pediatric Oncology Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center for pediatric cancer patients. Young heroes decorated the auditorium with superhero-themed ornaments and lights the night before the event. For each list, American Heritage Schools Pre-Medical Program students plan to raise funds to make those wishes come true and celebrate with the children at their holiday party taking place on Dec. 8, at 12 p.m., at the Broward Health Medical Center Heliport. The hospital staff supported the students in their mission to brighten the lives of young superheroes battling cancer at the Salah Pediatric Oncology Unit. The Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center is a vital resource for comprehensive pediatric hematology-oncology care in South Florida, committed to research and compassionate patient support. American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program students have hosted this initiative for 24 years. South Florida’s top community leaders, philanthropists and influencers were among the guests who were transported back to the Motown era with dinner, dancing, live entertainment, an engaging program and more to support great futures for Miami-Dade area youth. Eight-time Emmy award-winning journalist and WSVN Channel 7 news personality Belkys Nerey and youth member Sebastian Garcia co-emceed the event and helped engage and energize the crowd. The SweetTarts, DJ Sama alongside Carlos Oliva y Los Sobrinos del Juez Band provided the soundtrack for the evening with classic hits from the Motown era including Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Jackson 5 and more. Guests also enjoyed a unique Motown-themed musical performance from Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s youth members. During the event, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade honored notable alumni, inducting them into the Class of 2023 Alumni Hall of Fame, including Miami-Dade Public Schools Board Member for District 1, Dr. Steve Gallon III, Mayor of Miami Gardens Rodney Harris, WNBA Player Erica Wheeler and Actor Alex Livinalli. Each alumnus shared personal stories about their experiences with the Club. Supporters also participated in a special opportunity to sponsor-a-child through donations and a silent auction featuring high-end items and exceptional luxury experiences ranging from elegant jewelry, memorabilia, lifestyle experiences, unique travel opportunities and more. Through the generous support of sponsors, hundreds of area youth were granted a one-year fully-paid membership to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “We are incredibly humbled by the support from all those who joined us for our 15th Annual ‘Wild About Kids’ Gala at Loews Coral Gables Hotel with the Motown theme,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “The incredible evening wouldn’t be possible without our returning co-chairs Andy and Allison Stuart, our board members, sponsors and donors who are committed to providing great futures for our area youth. The annual event helps us raise funds to serve the Clubs’ many positive programs, support the Capital Campaign to completely rebuild the Northwest Club into a state-of-the-art facility and expand the new sixth Club.” “Allison and I were honored to return as co-chairs for Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s most significant fundraiser of the year.
