- Staying Fit During Difficult Times
As a child I developed a passion for health and fitness. It started with a desire to help my close relatives overcome sickness and hard times. This was difficult to witness but now I see these events as a blessing. They inspired me to educate myself and provided me with the experience and skills to help communities outside of my family achieve the same. Staying fit, especially now, has become crucial for us to reduce COVID-19 risks. It helps us take care of our immune system, physical and mental health. Fitness is more important than ever before! Through this article, I’m hoping to touch on some subjects that will come as a reminder to some and a great wakeup call to others. NUTRITION As we all know, food is energy for the body, which is an exciting fact! One of the first questions I ask during a nutrition consultation is “ Do you feel like you have enough energy throughout the day?” The answer to this question alone can tell a lot about one’s diet. Implementing a daily practice of reflecting on one’s energy level is a great way to detect the consumption of high-level energy foods vs. low-level energy foods. If an individual finds themselves often sluggish, constantly consuming caffeine beverages to get through the day, brain fog, slow reaction and response times or needing to lie down for naps – it is highly likely the foods that they are consuming are low in nutritional value. Now more than ever we must keep ourselves healthy and consciously take our aliment seriously in order to protect us from COVID-19. Thankfully, Crunch Fitness has partnered with DotFit, a respectable Vitamin and supplement company that stand by products that are safe and reliable. They are also FDA regulated and most NSF Certified (Pro Athletes only use NSF Certified Supplements). I found that DotFit.com is a great tool to help one understand more about their specific dietary needs. It has the tools designed to track macronutrients. All of Crunch fitness professionals are DotFit certified. To learn more about its benefits, reach out to us for a wellness consultation! FITNESS Isn’t it amazing how we are all distinctively different from one another? Each individual’s kinetic chains are specific and unique: from the way one walks to how one bends down to pick up something. At Crunch, we take a personal and close look at our client’s bodies in order to analyze its overall kinetic functionally. This is done prior to starting any program in order to achieve maximum results. Every individual has over compensations, limitations, overactive and underactive muscles. These body unbalances need to be addressed before starting any workout program – just like our nutritional approach. I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to work at Crunch because the company culture is designed to take care of its members and employees. If you haven’t visited Crunch in South Beach yet, come by! We have a beautiful facility where you can get all of your work out and wellness needs. We also have experienced and educated professionals that will guide you towards achieving your fitness goals. Hope to see you soon! - Jack & Jill Center to Debut New Madelaine Halmos Academy State-of-the-Art School Building
The Madelaine Halmos Academy’s (MHA) new state-of-the-art elementary school building, an expansion of Jack & Jill Center’s Early Education Center at its 1315 West Broward Blvd. campus in Fort Lauderdale, is scheduled to debut in April 2021. Serving students from high-need working families in kindergarten–fifth grade, the transformational project, currently under construction, is geared to prepare students for success in career and life, and be one of the highest-performing schools in Broward County. In October 2017, after careful financial and operational planning, along with parent and community feedback, Jack & Jill Center’s board of directors approved a plan to construct and operate a modern elementary school on its existing campus. The groundbreaking took place in August 2019. Under the supervision of general contractor Herman Construction Services, Inc., the modern 2-story, 28,767-square-foot building will feature 12 classrooms, an arts and science lab, music and media lab, rooftop play area, wellness room, dining room, and state-of-the-art security and technology. The architect is Miami-based Zyscovich Architects, which offers significant experience in school design. The MHA project will be accomplished through the $11 million Madelaine Halmos Academy Capital Campaign, with $9.2 million needed to construct the state-of-the-art school building, and $1.8 million to provide initial operating funds. Currently, the campaign has raised $9.5 million. The campaign is seeking donors. “We’re committed to Jack & Jill and supporting its effort to have an even deeper and enduring presence in the lives of children and families, particularly those living in the most challenging of circumstances,” said Madelaine Halmos, honorary co-chair of the Madelaine Halmos Academy Capital Campaign. “Establishing a new elementary school built upon Jack & Jill’s proven model of education and family support is, in our opinion, an important and necessary step to securing successful lives for families in need.” “We’re proud to help launch this effort with our gift and will do everything possible to make the new school a reality,” said Steve Halmos, honorary co-chair of the Madelaine Halmos Academy Capital Campaign. “We want to thank the community for its support in helping us to construct this new school, which will significantly enhance our ability to develop lifelong learners, launching them into bright, prosperous futures,” said Heather Siskind, CEO of Jack & Jill Center, Inc. Students are expected to start at the new building in May 2021. Early education is offered year-round. Most MHA students will receive tuition funding from Step Up for Students, a state-approved nonprofit scholarship funding organization that helps administer five scholarships for Florida schoolchildren. Every student who graduates from MHA is awarded a 2-year college scholarship. Currently housed at a leased space at the Salvation Army Community Center in Fort Lauderdale, MHA provides safe, academically sound and socially supportive environment for all learners. By constructing a new building, MHA will significantly extend its offerings by providing an accredited school incorporating research-based best practices. Some of its features include a technology-driven STEM curriculum; dedicated, highly-skilled staff and educators with low student to teacher ratios; extended school day for students; daily healthy breakfast, lunch and snacks; extracurricular activities fostering healthy social-emotional growth and personal development, educational field trips, a quality after-school program to include enriched after-school and summer camp experiences, and on-site counseling and therapeutic services. MHA’s kindergarten–fifth grade program will serve 220 students, with 352 total students (including early education and elementary school education) benefiting from the Jack & Jill education program. MHA’s building will create 37 new full-time jobs. - Interiors with Nikita Kahn: Ibiza Style
This month we focus on Ibiza style. This style and décor is casual and elegant, yet expresses an eclectic vibe and almost bohemian-like character. Combine traditional island furniture pieces made of natural materials in earthy, natural colors with modern functionality --think the Repose Sofa by Adam Court with its neutral palatte, and CB2’s Notch Wood Chair made of solid acacia and a back split down the middle. The Pierre Jeanneret Easy Chair Armchair is another example of a traditional chair constructed of solid teak and a woven cane back and seat. Add a few decorative and unique items to enhance this style’s carefree vibe, like Techstraw’s braided material carafe and Kann Design’s unique Trink Teak Bar Cart made of wood, aluminum, and steel. 1stdibs PIERRE JEANNERET EASY CHAIR ARMCHAIR $13,000 https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/armchairs/pierre-jeanneret-easy-chair-armchair/id-f_19636582/ Serena & Lily OLEMA SEAGRASS BASKET $228 www.serenaandlily.com/olema-seagrass-basket/natural/m11535.html CB2 NOTCH WOOD CHAIR $329 www.cb2.com/notch-wood-chair/s459782 MARTIN MASSE IPPICO 05 TRAVERTINE TABLE Price available upon request studiotwentyseven.com/furniture/ippico-05-travertine-table-by-martin-masse/ Pigment France Techstraw $344.51 pigmentfrance.com/catalogue Restoration Hardware WABI-SABI CHUNKY HAND-BRAIDED JUTE RUG $625 - $4,945 rh.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod17950005&categoryId=cat16660001 Kann Design TRINK TEAK BAR CART 2,940.00€ www.kanndesign.com/en/product/trink-teak-design-bar-cart Sofa image/top of the page: Adam Court REPOSA SOFA - Price available upon request - studiotwentyseven.com/furniture/repose-sofa-by-adam-court/

- Toast to Mr. Toast at Heaven Mykonos in CityPlace Doral
Dieuveny “DJ” Jean Louis, aka "Mr. Toast,” celebrated his St. Patrick’s Day birthday with an exclusive all-white soiree at the newly opened Heaven Mykonos at CityPlace Doral on March 17, 2021. The signature blue and white Mediterranean themed restaurant turned a touch of green for Louis’ birthday celebration. Louis ― a serial entrepreneur since age 19 ― is a steadfast visionary in the spirits, restaurant, boating, music, and entertainment industries. Friends and family of Louis enjoyed Heaven Mykonos’ signature craft cocktails made with Toast Vodka™ as well as an extensive list of wines. Guests had the opportunity to taste signature items from the restaurant’s contemporary Mediterranean menu including Astakomakaronada, Beef Tartare smoked at the table and topped with Caviar, Braised Lamb Flatbread, Moussaka, Paella cooked over charcoal, seasonal salads and more. Guests danced to the beats of DJ Armand Pena and enjoyed Heaven Mykonos’ virtual party robots and belly dancers. Fire dancers and live jazz artists engaged guests throughout the restaurant with live performances. A resident of Miami since he was 10 years old, the Haitian-born Louis has built an array of highly successful Black-owned businesses – including Toast Distillers, Inc. (“Toast”), a Miami-based spirits conglomerate and the famous Miami franchise Miami Subs – all while becoming a philanthropic ambassador. In 2010, surviving the devastating Haiti earthquake put life into perspective for Louis. Through this experience, Louis feels he was given a second chance at life. His mantra is, “every day above ground is a good reason to toast.” Building on their love of the restaurant and entertainment industry, Dieuveny “DJ” Jean Louis and David Garretson founded UMG Hospitality Group in 2018. In addition to Heaven Mykonos, the group includes Kuba Cabana, a lively dining concept which stems from the beautiful traditions of Latin and Caribbean music, cuisine and culture. Heaven Mykonos focuses on the flavors of the Mediterranean in a sexy lounge atmosphere. Located on the second floor of the vivacious CityPlace Doral, the restaurant offers tapas, an extensive wine list, craft cocktails and entertainment; and evolves into a sexy late-night lounge setting. Heaven Mykonos features Greek island-inspired décor, including airy white curtains and lush florals. Guests can also enjoy a second story VIP area and outdoor terrace. Under the direction of illustrious Miami Chef Jorge Mas, who serves as Corporate Chef for UMG Hospitality Group, the menu includes delicious Mediterranean seafood, seasonal salads, pastas, tapas, flatbreads made in a dedicated brick oven, and more. The impressive drink menu offers an array of wines and signature craft cocktails. Toast Vodka™ and Miami Club Rum cocktails are among the favorites on the cocktail list. Open for dinner daily at 4 p.m., Heaven Mykonos is located at CityPlace Doral, 8300 NW 36th Street, Ste 216, Doral, FL 33166. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Heaven Mykonos

- Meet the Female Founder Behind Miami's Centner Academy
Meet Leila Centner, Co-Founder and CEO of Centner Academy, who has taken a unique approach to education by building the first U.S. happiness school. Centner founded her school in Miami near the city's Design District in 2019 after not finding the right school for her daughters anywhere in the country. Centner Academy takes a holistic approach to education by focusing on children’s happiness, emotional well-being and language mastery. Serving preschool through 8th grade, the school’s curriculum explores leadership, mindfulness, artistic development, life skills, globally-focused academics, language mastery in English and Mandarin among other languages, physical education based on neuroscience, and a healthy organic diet. The curriculum also aims to impart emotional intelligence through daily meditation and various educational approaches, in which the focus is on students' academic achievement and social-emotional development. The school also offers meditation sessions for adults, giving parents and teachers the opportunity to release some of their fears and stress around parenting and teaching, respectively. Centner Academy's happiness model, based with guidance from positive psychology teacher Tal Ben-Shahar, proves happiness leads to success. Earlier this year, Centner Academy students took The MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) Assessment, which is administered to millions of students in thousands of schools and districts across the U.S. and in more than 145 countries around the world. Test results showed that 86% of Centner Academy students are at or above nationwide benchmarks for academic performance in Reading and 74% in Math. Some of their students also learned almost double what students across the country learned in the same time period. Beyond Centner Academy, Centner has been committed to improving the lives of thousands of underprivileged children and families in South Florida through The David and Leila Centner Family Foundation. In addition, Centner has donated $2 million to the Lotus House in Miami to build a culinary center to train women how to work in culinary/hospitality industries. Next on the agenda, Centner hopes to “serve it forward” by offering their innovative educational template to charter schools and public schools in low-income city neighborhoods nationwide.
