- Why Prince’s Music Will Become More Accessible Now
The world was shocked on April 21, 2016 by the untimely death of Prince , the highly prolific, Grammy-winning music icon who not only transformed music and the record industry but also provoked questions about race, gender and sexuality. Most of Prince’s work still remains private. Reuters Apart from his songs, musical genius and virtuosic skills, the “Purple Rain” singer is also widely recognized for his fierce protection of artistic freedom and his longstanding fight with his first record label, Warner Bros. It seems only a few years ago that he performed in concerts with the word “slave” written on his face. Partly as an act of protest, he also changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, causing people to refer to him as “the artist formerly known as Prince.” In the past few years, the singer remained reluctant to work with internet streaming platforms. Today, his music remains largely unavailable on Spotify and Apple Music. A rare exception is Jay Z’s Tidal, which released his “HITnRUN” albums. Prince makes a surprise appearance during ‘American Idol’‘s 2006 finale. Chris Pizzello/Reuters Commentators have been quick to discuss Prince’s positions on intellectual property rights and the music business. Yet, few have explored whether Prince’s music will become more readily available after his death. Although it is difficult to predict how his unreleased materials will be handled – considering that he does not have any apparent heir – a quick review of what happened after the death of other famously reclusive artists may offer some useful hints. His music may live forever, but will we be able to hear it? Reuters The vault It is a well-known secret that Prince accumulated a large trove of unreleased materials in a vault – or vaults – in his Paisley Park studio complex. In interviews conducted by The Guardian and the BBC, Brent Fischer, Prince’s longtime collaborator, suggested that this vault contained about 70 percent of the material the singer had ever produced. This figure is mind-boggling considering that Prince released close to 40 studio albums. Moreover, because of Prince’s widely publicized fight with his record label in the 1990s, many believe that the vault will contain some of Prince’s finest work – material that the singer might have chosen not to release amid that struggle. The last album released by Warner Bros. in the 1990s was ironically titled “The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale.” The King of Pop To some extent, the materials in Prince’s vault remind us of an equally valuable trove of unfinished tracks Michael Jackson left behind following his unexpected death in 2009. As an avid “MJ” fan, I still remember the suddenly much wider use of his music in movies and TV programs shortly after his death – “Bad” in the movie “Megamind” being a notable example. Controversies also arose over the posthumous release of his unfinished tracks – as part of the albums “MICHAEL” and “Xscape.” While some – such as Quincy Jones, Jackson’s former producer – questioned the motives behind the release of these albums, others were disappointed by the extra production and packaging that had gone into the original material without the artist’s input. Regardless of one’s views, however, the much wider use of Jackson’s music, along with increased merchandise sales, quickly catapulted the singer back to eye-popping commercial success. Today, Jackson is at the top of Forbes’ list of “top-earning dead celebrities,” bringing in US$115 million in last year alone. Michael Jackson’s music had a renaissance after his death. Reuters Franz Kafka Estates and their lawyers have been widely criticized for being greedy and for taking aggressive legal actions to limit public access to the works of the deceased. While property owners have unrestricted rights to dispose of their property – including inheritance – copyrights have become particularly problematic considering that they last for 70 years after an author’s death. Nevertheless, some estates have managed to make the works of the deceased more widely available. A leading example concerns Franz Kafka. Before he died at the young age of 41, he left specific instructions to his friend and executor, Max Brod: My last request: Everything I leave behind me … in the way of diaries, manuscripts, letters (my own and others’), sketches and so on, to be burned unread. Having already verbally declined his friend’s request in person, Brod refused to burn the manuscripts after the writer’s death. Had he followed Kafka’s instructions, we would never have read some of Kafka’s masterpieces, such as “The Trial” and “The Castle.” We might never even have known Kafka’s talents, as he published less than 450 pages in his lifetime! Much of what Kafka wrote would never have been read had his friend followed his wishes. Kafka statue via Shutterstock. J.D. Salinger A more recent example is J.D. Salinger, the author of “Catcher in the Rye.” Despite his wildly successful novel about teenager Holden Caulfield, he withdrew from public life shortly after the novel’s publication in 1951. Although Salinger continued to write – and had publicly admitted to doing so – the lack of publications since the early 1960s created a longstanding mystery. Salinger died in 2010. A few years later, a biographer revealed that he might have left instructions to his estate to publish as many as five novels after his death. The release of these novels would not only shed light on the author’s reclusive life but also help us understand better Holden Caulfield’s character. These letters were published shortly before the death of Salinger, who was fiercely protective of his privacy. Reuters Posthumous releases It remains to be seen what materials from Prince’s vault will be finally released. If past experience with recently deceased music superstars provides any guide, a considerable quantity of these previously unreleased materials will eventually become commercially available – whether Prince would have liked it or not. Although some will certainly argue that these materials should have been kept hidden given the artist’s lifetime choices, strong support can be drawn from his longstanding fight with record labels, not to mention his 2012 video clip teasing to release “every good thing in the vault.” Hopefully, Prince’s estate will be able to go through the vault carefully to develop a plan to disseminate the unreleased materials in ways that will honor the artist’s legacy – perhaps as “time capsule” albums. After all, if these materials remain locked up in a vault, it will be a loss to not only his estate but also his many fans around the world. Words by Peter K. - Heesen Yachts launches Project Grace, The First In A New 50m Steel Series
Heesen Yachts, in collaboration with Harrison Eidsgaard Studio, have unveiled their new 50m Steel Series through the creation of Project Grace, YN21350. She was officially unveiled during the Monaco Yacht Show 2023. The new 50m Steel Series aims to cater to modern yacht owners who prefer a look of clean-cut elegance and simplicity. Project Grace represents Heesen's mighty DNA and expertise, alongside Harrison Eidsgaard's creative and stylish flair. Key features: · 50-metre FDHF steel · Max speed of 15-16 knots · Enclosed volume of 499 GT · Heesen Hybrid propulsion · Holistic design approach · Exterior and Interior by Harrison Eidsgaard studio · Infinity pool and a large, fixed platform The yacht will feature a Fast Displacement Steel Hull and offers the added choice of Heesen’s hybrid technology. This option allows for intelligent power management and a silent cruise capacity, without the need for large banks of storage batteries, resulting in weight reduction, energy-saving and space conservation. The layout emphasises the connection of the outdoors to the interior, with sliding windows in the main saloon on the main deck, providing plenty of natural light and fresh air. Tenders and toys will be stored on the main deck forward and guests will enjoy a split-level aft deck terrace, overlooking an infinity pool and a large, fixed swimming platform. The yacht can accommodate twelve guests in six staterooms. Mark Cavendish, Heesen Yachts’ COO comments, “in terms of design, we have noticed that clients are opting for simpler interiors instead of extravagant ones, the preference is now for a ‘chic but understated aesthetic.’ In response to this demand, we are now incorporating this concept into the design of our yachts. Clients now embrace the idea that less is more, aligning perfectly with Heesen’s philosophy of functional and aesthetic design, exemplified by the pure, relaxed and open lines on board Project Grace.” “The design of Heesen’s 50-metre steel exudes confidence,” commented Peder Eidsgaard. “In keeping with the shipyard DNA, it translates the fast and sporty look of the aluminium yachts into dynamic and agile forms for this steel yacht. The profile is not radical or extravagant but refined and timeless. This is a yacht conceived to stand the test of time.” Eidsgaard added: “Our goal is to achieve the maximum possible lifestyle space for the guests while also ensuring that the crew have the perfect working environment to deliver an exceptional experience. Features such as the infinity pool and the sundeck’s distinctive coffee table, which cleverly doubles as an atrium skylight, will serve as a focal point to bring guests together. The sundeck will be large enough to accommodate up to 20 guests for outdoor dining, showcasing the importance of hospitality in yachting and ensuring that visiting day guests can be properly entertained too.” Construction is scheduled to commence in Summer 2024. - MOCA North Miami Announces 2024 Art On The Plaza Artists
The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to announce the 2024 Art On The Plaza Artists: Yanira Collado, Christopher Mitchell, and Nicole Salcedo. This annual program, inaugurated in 2020, provides an opportunity for South Florida artists to engage with the museum and its community, employing MOCA’s front plaza as a platform to elevate their site-specific, temporary public art installations. “As part of our mission, we’re dedicated to showcasing the creative breadth and scholarship of Miami’s local artists while also providing opportunities for the community to access and engage with our city's vibrant arts scene,” said Chana Sheldon, MOCA Executive Director. “Over the years, MOCA has steadfastly supported local artists and fostered community engagement through accessible, free programming. Offering programs like Art on the Plaza is a core tenet to that ongoing commitment.” The three installations will be sequentially displayed at MOCA throughout the year, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with a variety of themes, such as cultural identity and heritage, mythology and spirituality, nature and environment, and transformation through reflection. Art on the Plaza Artists are meticulously selected through proposals reviewed by an appointed committee. As an expansion from the program’s previous iterations, this year the program selected three artists, rather than four, in an effort to provide even more personalized support throughout their creative processes. Each artist will receive focused attention and assistance with fabrication, installation, and associated programming, ensuring their projects thrive over an extended four-month period. Opening March 13, sculptor Yanira Collado will showcase, For those who transcend in the wind/En los Ritmos de Oya/ Nan ritm yo Oya, a series of wind-propelled pinwheels, placed in MOCA’s fountain, which serve as a symbolic gesture representing joy, protection, spirituality, and the cycles of life, particularly within the African Diaspora of the Caribbean and Black North American communities. Collado’s practice engages concepts that allude to the restoration of things once muted due to the paradoxes in time and the disruption of indigenous cultures, summoned through materials such as reclaimed literary texts, wood, textiles, concrete, iron and drywall. With these materials, she creates an interplay with inherent geographic histories. Emphasizing this part of her practice, the pinwheels will be decorated with specific visual elements: varying tones of blue, associated with healing and protection in African traditions; patterns inspired by African geometrical creations and ancestral inheritance, reflecting the spiritual essence; and irregularities in the patterns reminiscent of Shoowa cut-pile embroidery from the Kuba Kingdom, symbolizing cultural continuity and resilience. Additionally, symbols resembling quilting blocks, reference the historical use of quilts as code language by enslaved Africans escaping persecution via the Underground Railroad. Opening June 26, MOCA’s Plaza will unveil Christopher Mitchell's photographic series, Haitian Mermaids. In the presentation, the Haitian-American photographer and director captures portraits of community members transformed into life-sized mermaids, adorned in vibrant Kanaval-style costumes. These captivating images will be showcased floating gracefully on and underwater in the fountain. Since the mid-1990s, Mitchell has dedicated his practice to documenting Haiti in all its dimensions, while embracing a versatile approach to photography, using a myriad of photographic techniques. His expansive portfolio serves as a tapestry of Haitian culture, reflecting its remarkable diversity and enduring resilience, and offering an outsider’s perspective on the traditional Miami arts ecosystem. In Haitian folklore, mermaids evoke a blend of fear and admiration, commanding reverence from a safe distance, their presence serving as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between humanity and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from the significance of these mythical figures, Mitchell's installation delves into the rich narratives of Haiti's coastal regions, capturing tales from the seas surrounding its beaches and the majestic waterfalls of Basin Blu in Jacmel. Through this presentation, viewers will be granted a glimpse into the enigmatic world of mermaids, believed to dwell beneath the urban landscape, including sewers, imparting cautionary wisdom about the perils of venturing too far into the waters, swimming alone, and the importance of environmental preservation. Opening September 18, Nicole Salcedo’s Earth Gate will culminate as the final installation of the 2024 series, offering a transformational threshold for visitors to pass through and honoring the spirit of the Earth and our inherent interconnectedness with all beings. The Cuban-American artist's multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, fibers, performance, film, drawing, and mark-making. Drawing from the legacies of Cuban women artists, such as Ana Mendieta and Belkis Ayón, Salcedo integrates botany, fractals, electromagnetic physics, and animistic spirituality to explore land-consciousness and the interplay between the body and its environment. Inspired by Caribbean-style gates, her installation at MOCA features intricate plant motifs and a large face representing the spirit of nature. The installation’s freestanding design signifies a transition from the mundane to the sacred, inviting reflection before crossing. Supported by pools of water, the work will enhance the museum's landscape, offering visitors a meaningful opportunity to contemplate and connect, closing out the 2024 series of Art on the Plaza. “We are thrilled to welcome these three artists to MOCA, as they draw upon the cultural heritage of their respective backgrounds, while also reflecting on the ever-evolving artistic landscape of this community,” said MOCA curator Adeze Wilford. “Each of the works coming to the Plaza offer an imaginative experience for viewers, from the mythological mermaids to creating a space of contemplation to consider their connection with the environment. The projects on view this season are a reminder that art is a powerful medium for transformation and connection, and I’m looking forward to sharing them with visitors soon.” Full programming schedules will be announced soon, but for more details on Art on the Plaza, opening events, and past commissions, please visit the museum’s website. - Artificial Intelligence Can Support Architects But Lacks Empathy & Ethics
Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized many different industries in recent years. It gained a lot of attention and popularity with the launch of ChatGPT, a tool capable of writing poems, solving equations, and producing articles on different topics. With the fast-paced implementation of AI in different fields, will it take the place of architects and architecture schools soon? To answer this question, we need to understand the capabilities of AI and the role of architects and architecture schools. Artificial intelligence is changing how different disciplines are practiced and taught, including architecture. (Shutterstock) Architectural education While the topics and research surrounding AI are rapidly evolving, AI lacks certain qualities and characteristics that architects gain by completing architecture school. At its core, architects learn how to use different skills to combine technical knowledge, arts, esthetics, emotions, and other attributes. Architecture schools train their students so that they can respond to certain design problems with solutions based on their personal experiences, design styles, and other factors. Architecture curricula still needs to incorporate traditional design skills. (Shutterstock) Creativity and innovative solutions are a result of combining different skill sets, personal experiences, and technical knowledge that future architects develop in architecture schools. The same process exists when it comes to AI. AI is trained on different datasets to come up with solutions. In some cases, like ChatGPT, it uses this dataset to generate new and innovative solutions. But AI is limited by its datasets, especially when there isn’t enough data, or gathering it is too resource-intensive. This is the main difference between humans and AI comes. Humans can draw on their experiences, skills and other attributes to come up with innovative solutions without being limited to specific datasets. Improved efficiency AI has different capabilities that can significantly help many different industries, including architecture and construction. For instance, AI can help architects with architectural programming and creating layouts in buildings. It can provide renders and other types of visualizations. In general, AI can make many different processes, such as schematic design and renders, more efficient. Architects can develop customized platforms based on their guiding principles, visions, design styles, and other values. However, assistive tools that result in a final product might interrupt the learning process at schools. Students are supposed to learn skills by exploring different design solutions, ideas, and philosophies. However, architecture students might not fully engage with learning if they use assistive tools that conceal or eliminate the process. Therefore, architecture schools should carefully study how AI can be integrated with their syllabi to improve the learning process for architecture students. Architecture schools should teach students how to use AI technologies, but ensure that they still acquire needed skills. (Shutterstock) Absence of true empathy Beyond architecture schools, understanding the importance of the shared values, heritage, and cultural qualities of a community, or even a person, is essential for architects in coming up with design solutions. While AI is capable of analyzing such information, it cannot truly empathize with and understand these different considerations. At the same time, decisions made by architects carry responsibilities and liabilities. Students learn about sustainability issues, the long-term impacts of designs, ecological footprints, and other similar topics. Although AI can be provided with decision-making capabilities, it cannot replace architects’ roles in the ethical decision-making process. In addition, architecture involves collaborations among different stakeholders, from clients to interior designers, civil engineers, and other experts. Although AI can engage in dialogue, it lacks the ability to engage in dynamic interactions and truly understand the intentions and experiences of different stakeholders. Human indispensability AI is still in its early stages and may certainly improve significantly in the coming years. However, at the moment, it seems unlikely to replace the indispensable role of architecture schools and architects because they cannot fully grasp cultural values and heritage. In addition, AI cannot draw on personal experiences, emotions, and perceptions of different concepts and designs. In its current state, AI cannot engage in meaningful collaborations where it can truly understand the needs of different stakeholders. Furthermore, the ethical issues, responsibilities, and liabilities involved need to be addressed before progressing to more advanced stages that can give AI more freedom in the design process. Although AI can significantly improve the efficiency of the design process and improve the learning experience, it’s too early to consider it — even as a semi-independent entity — during the architectural design process.
