  • Flora Plant Kitchen Brings Elevated Vegetarian Cuisine to Miami’s Upper East Side

Vegetarian cuisine has gained a new Miami home with the opening of Flora Plant Kitchen, a sprawling indoor/outdoor restaurant in the MiMo District serving innovative plant-powered meals with a focus on sustainability and a unique Latin twist. The restaurant was founded and is run by Marnie Gelhard of DMS Earth Hospitality Group, which also operates The Cactus Shop, a food concept in Brooklyn, New York. Gelhard says that the Flora Plant Kitchen was created to serve as a “sanctuary” for vegetarians and those seeking to incorporate more veggie-forward food into their diets, as well as to introduce Miami to a new type of elevated meat-free dining. “We drew our inspiration from our travels to Colombia and Mexico, where we were captivated by the local ingredients, decor, wildlife, fresh fruit, and vibrant sights and smells,” says Gelhard. “Flora Plant Kitchen’s vegetarian focus is a reflection of our core values—compassion, environmental responsibility, and the promotion of healthier food choices for our community and our planet. For us, it's all about compassion and respect for animals - our pets hold a special place in our hearts. We're also on a mission to shrink our carbon footprint by reducing meat consumption. Learning that factory farming churns out more methane gas than global transportation was another factor that led us to shift towards vegetarian cuisine.” Cuban-American Executive Chef Fabio Delgado leads the restaurant’s culinary team, which dishes out elevated, healthy Latin-inspired cuisine. Each dish artfully combines culinary creativity, sustainability, and an experimental fusion of flavors, prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients in state-of-the-art kitchen equipment, including a PIRA charcoal barbecue that adds a distinctive smoky flavor to offerings. “Each dish is made from scratch in our kitchen so we pay maximum attention to every detail,” says Delgado. “Our products are fresh and delicious as we mix techniques and cultures in each dish, providing a unique approach to top-quality vegetarian food.” Menu items range in price from $25 to $65 and include homemade pastries, pastas, and specialities like Shakshouka with Arepas, a dish of sunny-side up eggs in a gluten free tomato and pepper sauce combined with confit cherry tomatoes, plant-powered chorizo avocado, queso fresco, micro cilantro and served with handmade Colombian cheese arepa. Other savory highlights are Cactus Elotes, charcoal whole corn cob that comes topped with chipotle guava aioli, long hots aioli, cotija cheese and paprika breadcrumbs and Brunch Hamburguesa, a plant-powered burger on homemade brioche filled with truffle aioli, cheddar cheese, sunny side up free range eggs, mixed greens, avocado, heirloom tomato and caramelized onion accompanied by roasted heirloom fingerling potatoes. “We're proud to support local farmers who share our commitment to sustainable practices,” noted Gelhard. “By sourcing fresh, high-quality ingredients from these eco-conscious farmers, we're not only ensuring the goodness of our dishes but also nurturing the health of our soil. We keep our prices reasonable and, with three different menus, there's something for everyone, including options with premium ingredients.” Guests can also indulge in Yuzu French Toast, a sweet offering of housemade brioche topped with a berry compote made even better with yuzu mascarpone and almond oat crumble or the Japanese-style Peach Souffle Pancakes, cleverly layered with mouthfuls of Amaretto flambéed peaches, orange ricotta, toasted shaved almonds and a dusting of sugar snow. Flora Plant Kitchen's pastry display showcases croissants, scones, and banana bread and gluten-free and vegan selections prepared with methods steeped in French tradition. The food menu was made to be enjoyed with a selection of made-to-order juices, smoothies, herbal teas, farm-fresh Colombian coffee, wines, local beers, wines and specialities such as the Golden Turmeric Latte with organic turmeric root, dates, cardamon, ashwagandha, vanilla bean and black pepper.  A list of vegan cocktails includes handcrafted creations like Green Mimosa, a Prosecco-based cocktail mixed with apple, celery, and lemon and clarified options made with coconut milk. Some of the concoctions are prepared with repurposed ingredients like coffee grounds and lemon peels. Australia-native Gelhard designed the 5,800-square-foot restaurant, which features a minimalist aesthetic with a neutral color palette, custom-made furniture sourced from Bali, Indonesia, and   Brazilian cumaru wood pergola, most of which is crafted from recycled teak. Sustainability also plays a role in the decor through the use of organic materials like recycled teak, rattan, sand, coffee wood, and seagrass, a composition that blends harmoniously with the lush greenery that surrounds Flora Plant Kitchen. “Our restaurant’s design aims to make guests feel like they’re on a tropical vacation, with plenty of fresh air, calming vibes, and lots of natural light,” notes Gelhard. “It’s a place where people can take a break from their busy lives, relax, enjoy fresh food and just take it easy.” Flora Plant Kitchen is located at 5580 NE 4th Ct. # 4b, Miami, FL, 33137. • MADD Southeast Florida Raises Nearly $200,000 in Fight Against Drunk Driving

In an effort to support the ongoing fight against drunk driving and drugged driving, over 1,000 runners, walkers and residents of South Florida participated in Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Southeast Florida’s 13th Annual UKG & Salah Foundation Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K presented by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County on April 28, 2024. The event raised nearly $200,000 to benefit MADD Southeast Florida’s community education, victim support services and youth prevention programs. Event fundraising remains open until May 28 to support these critical programs offered free of charge throughout South Florida. Participants gathered for the in-person race near Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale. From 2019-2021, drunk driving deaths in the United States increased by 31 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s April 2023 report. This is a 100 percent preventable crime, and MADD’s goal is to see a future with no more victims. At the race, which was emceed by Olivia Rae Whitehead, host of WPLG Local 10’s SoFlo H2O, attendees enjoyed children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances and vendor/educational booths. Alex Piccirilli, a Nike trainer featured on Netflix’s “Kickstart Fitness with the Basics,” led a warmup before runners and walkers hit the starting line. The event was attended by dignitaries including Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus; Honorary Chairperson Colonel Nichole Anderson, Undersheriff of Broward Sheriff’s Office; Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz; Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine; Sgt. Ryan Clifton from Broward Sheriff’s Office; Sgt. Trevor Thomas from Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s DUI Unit; and Lt. Indiana Miranda from Florida Highway Patrol. The annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K is a community-driven 5K that raises awareness about drunk driving and underage drinking while uniting community members around MADD’s mission. Since it was established in 2011, Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K has raised nearly $4 million that stays in the South Florida community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving, making it the most successful grassroots fundraiser in the history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost. “We are extremely grateful for our supporters who sponsored, donated, ran, walked, volunteered and attended this meaningful event. Our community’s commitment to ending drunk driving makes the annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K an overwhelming success each year,” said Geronemus, who is also the immediate past chairwoman of the MADD National Board of Directors. “Drunk driving deaths in the U.S. continue to increase, so it’s more important than ever for the community to come together to raise awareness to end this 100 percent preventable crime.” Geronemus’ late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. “The men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office work every day to make sure our county is a safe place to live, work and play. I feel that it is crucial for us to support organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving as we share a common goal of keeping our roads and community safe. Drunk driving is still the deadliest killer on our nation’s roadways, and I thank our entire community for joining us at Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5k on April 28 as we take steps to end drunk and drugged driving,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office Colonel Nichole Anderson, Undersheriff. “If you have had any substance that would impair your ability to drive, you must not get behind the wheel,” said Wasserman Schultz. “There are some wonderful programs that MADD has led and created, like the HALT Act, and I am proud to have been able to help pass it into law. One critical effort that I’m most eager to push ahead alongside MADD, is a requirement that over the next few years major automobile manufacturers will be required to develop and install devices to ensure that whether you are impaired can be detected when you get behind the vehicle.” Event sponsors include Signature Sponsors UKG and Salah Foundation; Presenting Sponsor Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County; Road Guardian Sponsor Weinstein Legal Team; Corporate Champion Sponsors Aetna, Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Durée & Company, Florida Highway Patrol, Fort Lauderdale Police Department, JM Family, Memorial Healthcare System, and the Miami Heat; Spotlight Sponsors Brinkley Morgan, BBX Capital, LaCroix, Publix, Rotary Club of Weston, Steinger, Greene & Feiner, Thomas & Pearl Injury Attorneys, and Westway Towing; and MADD Milestone Sponsors Baptist Health, Crowe, LLP, and David Geronemus & Mitzi Lyman Donations will continue to be accepted at www.walklikemadd.org/fortlauderdale through May 28. • Amber Zhaoyang Wang: A Global Fashion Icon's Trailblazing Path

Amber Zhaoyang Wang's journey from Luoyang, China, to the global fashion spotlight is nothing short of remarkable. Mentored by supermodel Coco Rocha, Amber quickly rose to prominence as an international model, gracing the pages of over 40 magazines such as Bazaar, GQ and Vogue, and strutting the runways of New York Fashion Week. Now, she's set to captivate audiences in her first feature film, #MODELS WANTED, a poignant exploration of sex trafficking in the modeling industry. Beyond her professional achievements, Amber's story is one of resilience and advocacy, shaped by her experiences as a gifted basketball player, an entrepreneur, and a dedicated law student. In this exclusive interview with Miami Living Magazine, Amber shares insights into her multifaceted career, her commitment to shedding light on pressing social issues, and her dedication to mental health awareness on a global scale. Miami Living (ML): Hi Amber, it is such a pleasure to have you join us today!  Can you share with us a bit about your extraordinary journey from being a talented basketball player in China in your teens to becoming an international model and now an aspiring actress? Amber: I've always been drawn to exploring diverse roles and embracing new challenges at different stages of my life. This curiosity and willingness to evolve have guided me from the basketball courts in China to international modeling runways and now towards the realm of acting. Each transition reflects my passion for growth and a deep-seated desire to express myself in varied, dynamic ways. ML: What inspired you to pursue a career in modeling, and how did your mentorship with supermodel Coco Rocha influence your path in the industry? Amber: Coco is really nice - she taught me how to pose, and I practiced at home every day. She also helped me perfect my walk and instilled in me the importance of taking my modeling career as seriously as I did basketball. Just like on the court, it's crucial to take responsibility for your career and strive for excellence in every aspect. ML: Could you tell us more about your upcoming film, #MODELS WANTED, and the significance of its message regarding the issue of sex trafficking in the modeling industry? Amber: In my upcoming film, #MODELS WANTED, I play a complex character - a psychopath model who leads a double life that viewers only come to grasp as the plot unfolds. It’s a thrilling role because the audience doesn't realize the truth until it's too late, adding an element of suspense and surprise. What excites me most about this project is how it blends entertainment with a crucial social message, raising awareness about the realities of sex trafficking within the modeling industry. It's a powerful film that I'm truly passionate about as it allows us to spotlight a serious issue while engaging and educating the audience. ML: Your experience with mental health struggles as an international student in the United States is incredibly relatable. How has your journey shaped your advocacy for mental health awareness, and what steps do you take to support others facing similar challenges? Amber: My personal experience with mental health struggles as an international student in the United States has deeply shaped my advocacy for mental health awareness. Being in that position, I understand the challenges firsthand. Most educational institutions have their own mental health departments, which are excellent resources. However, the problem often lies in students not knowing where these resources are or feeling hesitant to seek help initially. Recognizing this, I believe that providing guidance from the beginning is essential. I advocate for better orientation about mental health services upon students' arrival and work to reduce the stigma around seeking help, ensuring others can find support more easily when they need it. ML: You are currently attending Law School.  How do you balance such demanding academic pursuits with your thriving career in the modeling and entertainment industries? Amber: I've actually already graduated, but I've always enjoyed keeping myself extremely busy. Balancing my studies with a career in modeling and entertainment was certainly challenging, but it was also incredibly rewarding. It taught me the importance of time management and staying organized, skills that have been invaluable across all aspects of my life. This dynamic schedule has allowed me to pursue my passions without compromise. ML: With your busy schedule, how do you unwind and indulge in self-care? Any favorite relaxation rituals or guilty pleasures you'd like to share? Amber: I love sauna and Cryo therapy! ML: As you continue to diversify your career across modeling, acting, and law school, what exciting projects or goals are on the horizon for you? Any dreams or aspirations you're eager to pursue in the coming years? Amber: I'm excited to delve deeper into the world of cinema, with several film projects lined up in the coming years. My journey through modeling, acting, and law school has only fueled my passion for storytelling, and I'm eager to explore more diverse and challenging roles on the big screen. This blend of experiences continues to enrich my perspective and drive my aspirations, making every new project a thrilling opportunity to grow and connect with audiences worldwide. Not sure what to get? The Seafood Towers are a way to start your meal. Perfect for sharing, here you get to sample a little bit of everything. Before we dive into the main dishes, there are some shareables guests have to try. The Wood Charred Octopus and the Tuna Tacos are delicious and are sizable sharable portions. The tacos have just the right amount of wasabi, and the octopus has just the right amount of char. Every bite tastes like a little bit of heaven. For the main dishes, Boatyard has crafted some unique options like the Florida Paella which comes with an assortment of seafood and house-made chorizo, or the Jumbo Shrimp Scampi served with orzo, spinach, and basil. Guests can also order seafood and steaks from the grill. There are four different cuts of meat and six different types of fish you can grill. Both seafood and steaks can be paired with a selection of sauces and sides. The food at Boatyard is very diverse and well presented. You won’t leave hungry and you will not get tired of those marina views. Boatyard is located at 1555 SE 17th Street, Fort Lauderdale For more information visit, www.boatyard.restaurant. • Farrey’s Lighting, Bath, Kitchen and Hardware Commemorated a Century of Service and a Future

Farrey's Lighting, Bath, Kitchen and Hardware, a cornerstone of the South Florida community, is proud to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024. This family-owned business has long been a premium source of unique, high-quality products and exceptional professional service. To celebrate a century of service and a future of innovation, Farrey’s hosted a 100th Anniversary Celebration at its North Miami Showroom on April 24. Invited VIP guests comprised of community leaders and Farrey’s long-time partners, including architects, general contractors, real estate agents, designers and more, had the opportunity to exclusively experience Farrey’s North Miami Showroom while mingling with CEO and Chairman Bud Farrey and Farrey’s executives. During the event, Farrey’s was honored with three proclamations from Miami-Dade County Governmental and Community Affairs Liaison Melonie Burke, North Miami Councilman Scott Galvin and North Bay Village Mayor Brent Latham, a testament to Farrey’s dedication and commitment to the Miami-Dade community. The exclusive event featured elegant touches and photo opportunities including a retro photo booth, a 100thanniversary-themed ice sculpture and a Fiat gelato car provided by Dolce Vita Gelati. A live violinist entertained and engaged with the guests throughout the event while they enjoyed complimentary wine, beer and hors d'oeuvres. “It’s an honor to celebrate this remarkable milestone and the Farrey’s legacy,” said Bud Farrey. “It’s been a pleasure to serve our community for the past 100 years. Our customers are like family to us, and this wouldn’t be possible without them and our long-time vendor partners who have trusted our team for their lighting, bath, kitchen and hardware needs.” Founded by John J. and Emily Farrey in 1924, Farrey’s has been a leading provider of products, technical resources and services for lighting, bath, kitchen and hardware projects. From its humble beginnings as a small general store that sold hardware, linens, lighting, china, fishing gear and other home products, Farrey’s has consistently upheld its commitment to being a trusted source of unique, superior offerings and unmatched expert services. A testament to the Farrey’s rich history in the Miami-Dade community, after the 1926 hurricane, John J. Farrey was appointed chief building inspector of Miami Beach, with a mandate to craft a building code to prevent that level of structural damage from occurring again. This historic document was later recognized as the first South Florida Building Code. In the 1960s, the third generation joined the family business. Bud Farrey became chairman and president, while Frank Farrey assumed the roles of vice president and chief financial officer. They guided the business through continuous expansion over the next decades. Bud and Frank upheld the family's legacy of success by demonstrating adaptability and growth with the times. Today, the fourth generation of the Farrey family continues its legacy of service with the largest product selection and in-stock inventory of its kind in South Florida. With more than 25,000 in-stock SKUs and two 30,000-square-foot showrooms — one in North Miami, built in 1980, and one in Coconut Grove, built in 2002 — the company owes its longevity to always having strong local, national and international vendor relationships as well as providing excellence service to South Florida trade professionals. The event was a success thanks to the generosity of various sponsors. The Platinum Sponsors were Graff, Toto WAC, Schonbek and Modern Forms. The Gold Sponsors were Hansgrohe, Robern, Elegant, Minka and Artemide. The Silver Sponsors were Avenue Lighting, Aquabrass, Baldwin, Beach Lighting, Dornbracht, Duravit, ET2, Gessi, Lib&Co, Madeli, Eurofase, LeGrand and MTI.
