  • The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, Presents Artist Zilia Sánchez’s Works Spanning from 1950 to 1996.

From April to October 2024, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, will present a comprehensive survey of works by artist Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926, Havana; lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico). A singular voice in postwar Latin American modernism and geometric abstraction, Sánchez’s dynamic painterly practice encompasses a broad range of styles and themes. Spanning more than seven decades, her works are a product of continual experimentation. Sánchez is best known for her iconic shaped canvas paintings. Stretched over wooden constructions, these works resemble bodily shapes while retaining abstract qualities. Through these works, the artist has explored formalist concerns while subtly grappling with significant social issues—notions of gender, feminism, and identity formation, among others. In addition to these stretched canvas paintings, the exhibition also includes a significant number of Sánchez’s earlier works, such as her abstract paintings in bright hues and geometric shapes created in the 1950s while living in Cuba. In Havana, Sánchez was part of a group of painters that sought to leave behind figurative painting, which had dominated previous generations. In its stead, they mobilized abstraction, as an anti-establishment proposal and as a formal innovation. These were turbulent years in Cuba, as the repressive dictatorship was established, and a young generation of students, artists, and civic leaders resisted. In this atmosphere Sánchez began to develop increasingly complex formal proposals and test new abstract languages. In parallel with her abstractions, Sánchez developed her “Afrocubanos” series of paintings depicting abstracted, stylized figures and alluding to ritual practices and religious effigies. This exhibition gathers for the first time a robust group of these works, broadening understanding of the expansive scope and breadth of Sánchez’s practice. The artist left Cuba in 1960, a year after Fidel Castro came to power, and settled in New York, where she became an active member of the cultural scene of émigré artists and writers. She worked as a graphic designer and as a theater set designer, while continuing to develop and exhibit her paintings. Experimenting with nontraditional materials, like sawdust, resin, and wax, Sánchez created a series of mixed media paintings that relate to the four elements, including Agua (1961) and Tierra (1968), along with more abstract themes such as Ecuación (Equation, 1963) and Sucesión (Succession, 1966). In 1966, Sánchez moved to Madrid, aided by a fellowship from the CINTAS Foundation, to study conservation and restoration. She began to develop the style that would come to characterize her practice. Three-dimensional canvases with sensuous forms, her paintings of this period combine geometric abstraction with social, biographical, emotional, and erotic connotations, as works with titles referencing “Eros” and “Amazons” suggest. Since 1971, Sánchez has lived and worked in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The works she has created there are marked by an emphatic embrace of the female form, challenging the rigid and rational conventions of European modernism with a sensorial, feminist take on geometric abstraction. The exhibition “Topologías / Topologies” encompasses approximately thirty works by the artist produced between 1950 and 1996. The survey will be accompanied by an exhibition catalogue featuring new photography, scholarly essays on the artist, and archival materials. Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926, Havana; lives and works in San Juan, Puerto Rico) has been exhibited internationally since the 1950s. Most recently, solo exhibitions have been mounted at Artist Space, New York (2013); the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., which toured to Museo de Arte Ponce, San Juan, and El Museo del Barrio, New York (all 2019). Sánchez’s work has been featured in seminal group exhibitions, including “Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985,” at the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York as well as the main exhibition “Viva Arte Viva” of the 2017 Venice Biennale. It is currently on view in “Foreigners Everywhere” at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Sánchez work is held in museum collections including the Tate, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Art of Puerto Rico, San Juan; Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires, , Argentina; National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba. • Max Verstappen Dominates Inaugural F1 Soapbox Race at Parc Olympique

In a unique prelude to the much-anticipated Canadian Grand Prix, the world’s fastest drivers from Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App RB teams showcased their skills in F1’s inaugural Soapbox Race. Here’s the scoop: - The event was hosted by Molly Carlson, a Montreal-based Red Bull Cliff Diving star and internet sensation, along with renowned Canadian snowboarder Craig McMorris. The course, laid out at the iconic Parc Olympique in Montreal, featured a series of challenges designed to test the drivers. - With enthusiastic support from fans of both teams, drivers navigated the Great Canadian Crossing, braved a snowstorm, survived a chicane, and tackled a series of rollers. After battling for the best qualifying times, the drivers competed in thrilling one-on-one races to the finish line. - Ultimately, weight and height played crucial roles in determining soapbox performance. Max Verstappen clinched the fastest time, followed closely by Daniel Ricciardo and Checo Perez. - Daniel Ricciardo remarked, “I’ve never done a soapbox race before. Zero horsepower was scarier than 700 horsepower! We discussed weight at the beginning, knowing Max had the advantage over me, then Checo, and finally Yuki – and we were right!” - Max Verstappen noted, “With everyone in the same soapbox, there’s not much difference. The heaviest one usually has a slight advantage, and I think I was the heaviest of the four, so going downhill, that’s a bit of an advantage.” - Checo Perez commented, “It was good fun, a bit hectic. Unfortunately, I couldn’t jump enough despite trying my best. I always knew it would be between Max and Daniel due to weight. I could have told you the one who was going to lose was Yuki because he’s quite a lot lighter than even myself!” - Yuki Tsunoda shared, “The main target was to drive fast and not brake at the chicane. In the end, I achieved that, so I was happy, but it didn’t work out!” Highlights of the Event: - Each driver received a personalized soapbox featuring their names and race numbers. - 80 lucky fans from Oracle Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App RB were invited to witness the action live and meet the drivers. - The course included key challenges: - The Great Canadian Crossing, with cutouts of hockey players, maple leaves, and raccoons. - A snowstorm, simulating near whiteout conditions. - A prairie-inspired chicane, testing drivers’ steering skills with tight turns. - A drive through the Rocky Mountains ramp of rollers, concluding their run. - In the qualifying round, each driver made one run to clock their fastest time. Max secured pole position, followed by Daniel, Checo, and Yuki. - The event culminated in head-to-head races: Checo versus Yuki, and Max against Daniel. Montreal has a rich history of soapbox racing, with the last Red Bull Soapbox race held in 2015 near Victoria Square. This summer, Red Bull Soapbox returns to Edmonton on June 22, with 60 teams competing in homemade soapboxes for a chance to become the hero of the day. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Red Bull

  • Don’t Listen to Gwyneth Paltrow – IVs Are Not a Shortcut to Good Health

Actor and businesswoman Gwyneth Paltrow declared “I love an IV!” recently, calling herself an “early adoptor” of intravenous infusion during a podcast. Both she and the show’s host were hooked up to drips during an interview in which they discussed bone broth, skipping meals and infrared saunas. AP Photo/Alex Goodlett The Goop boss has been criticised for her “beauty from the inside out” ideas, which she says are helping her recover from long COVID and reduce inflammation. Lots of TikTok users are not having it – but IV supplements have hit the mainstream in recent years. Here’s why they are not a quick fix and can be deadly. What is IV vitamin therapy? IV vitamin therapy administers supplements directly into the bloodstream via a needle inserted into a vein. Fans of the therapy believe this route leads to higher nutrients in the body compared with oral supplements or food-based nutrients as it avoids nutrient losses through digestion and excretion. Providers of these injections say they customise the formula of vitamins and minerals depending on the patient’s perceived needs. Many do this without an initial blood test, making it close to impossible to know if you have a pre-existing vitamin deficiency. A typical session in a shopfront or home visit can take 30–90 minutes and cost anywhere between A$80 to $3,000. Popular drip “cocktails” include blends of vitamin C and B complex “for energy”, B complex and zinc “for skin”, vitamin C, magnesium and amino acids “for happiness”, and a supposedly “anti-ageing” blend of glutathione. Many of these contain mostly water-soluble vitamins C and B, which are processed by the kidneys and excess nutrients excreted through urine when the body has received the amount it needs to work properly. What does the science say? IV therapy is not new and has been used in the medical profession for decades. In hospitals, it is used to hydrate patients and administer essential nutrients if patients have difficulty eating, drinking or absorbing them. Single nutrient deficiencies like vitamin B12 or iron are often treated with infusions under medical supervision. The “cocktails” that IV vitamin therapy clinics create and administer are not supported by scientific evidence. There have been no clinical studies to show vitamin injections of this type offer any health benefit or are necessary for good health. Very few studies have looked at their effectiveness in adults. In those that have, they are either of very poor scientific quality, found no significant differences and involved only a handful of people, were missing a placebo group, or contained only anecdotal evidence from single cases. Businesses may offer vitamin ‘cocktails’ but there is no evidence to support them. Shutterstock What’s Gwyneth on about then? Paltrow recently shared her enthusiasm for glutathione as her favourite IV vitamin therapy. Glutathione is heralded as the “master antioxidant” in the body and is naturally produced by our cells, working to prevent oxidative stress and tissue damage. The body’s demand for this nutrient is believed to increase as we age. Studies have reported that taking an oral glutathione supplement doesn’t increase blood levels in humans. In 2015, a trial reported some beneficial effects on immune function with long-term glutathione oral supplementation, but the authors said more studies were required to further understand the nature of these effects. It is important to note that no research has supported the claim IV therapy with glutathione slows down ageing or reduces oxidative damage. What could go wrong? Injecting anything straight into your bloodstream comes with some big risks, especially if those administering the drips aren’t medically trained. Medical doctors tend to avoid inserting IV lines into people unless it’s absolutely necessary (such as for medical emergencies). Air bubbles (or embolism) accidentally introduced via IV can be fatal. Another major risk is hypervitaminosis, or consuming too high a dose of a vitamin. Unusually high stores of vitamins in fat tissue can, over time, cause problems like Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, kidney issues, muscle spasms, pain, burning and itching. And any time you have an IV line inserted, it creates a direct path into your bloodstream and bypasses your skin’s defence mechanism against bacteria. This can put you at risk of dangerous systemic infection. IV therapy also puts your wallet at risk. If you are not vitamin deficient, supplements (oral or infused) may just create very expensive urine. There is no regulation of IV therapy by the Therapeutic Goods Act in Australia, so ultimately you could be paying to receive sugar water, rather than the advertised formulas for “anti-ageing”. Many advertisers quote their patients as feeling or looking better after an infusion. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) believes there is little or no accepted evidence to support such generalised claims and they are, therefore, misleading and in breach of national laws. In November last year, Ahpra warned businesses about making misleading health claims in relation to infusions. It is also illegal in Australia to misrepresent yourself as a medical practitioner or nurse. Don’t believe the hype While it sounds logical that consuming more of a good thing would be good for you, research shows this is not necessarily the case. In a healthy person, nutrient digestion and absorption are carefully regulated to release them into the bloodstream from the gut and liver. Excessive amounts of nutrients entering the bloodstream without undergoing this process may result in harm, and the long-term consequences remain unknown. Most of us are far better off trying to get vitamins and minerals by eating a balanced diet with a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. It’s also much easier, cheaper and safer. • What Precautions Should Elderly Individuals Take When Starting Probiotics?

Have you ever wondered how elderly individuals can safely begin using probiotics? Maintaining a balanced gut flora becomes crucial for overall health as we age. Probiotics, often called good bacteria, play a significant role in this balance. However, before diving into the world of probiotics, there are essential precautions that the elderly should consider to maximize benefits while minimizing risks. Image by Andriy Medvediuk / Adobestock Probiotics And Their Importance Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer a health benefit on the host when administered in adequate amounts. For elderly individuals, maintaining a healthy digestive system is vital as it is linked to improved immunity and overall well-being. Probiotics can help enhance gut health, which often deteriorates with age due to changes in the gastrointestinal tract and the increased use of medications. Image by Sebastian Kaulitzki / Adobestock Consulting Healthcare Providers The first and foremost precaution is consulting with a healthcare provider. Elderly individuals often have multiple health conditions and might be taking various medications. A doctor can advise whether probiotics are safe, considering their overall health and current medications. Consulting healthcare providers ensures that probiotics will not interfere with existing conditions or medications, providing a safe path forward in their use. Choosing The Right Probiotic Not all probiotics are the same. They come in different strains and strengths, each beneficial for different aspects of health. It is crucial to choose a probiotic that targets the specific needs of the elderly. A healthcare professional can help select the right type based on the individual's health concerns and goals. Selecting the right probiotic is essential for addressing specific health issues effectively without causing side effects, making the supplementation truly beneficial. Image by banjongseal324 / Adobestock Starting Slowly When beginning probiotics, it is advisable to start slowly. Introducing probiotics gradually allows the body to adjust without causing significant disruptions to the digestive system. It is common to initially experience mild bloating or gas, which typically subsides as the body adapts. Starting slowly with probiotics minimizes potential discomfort and allows users to gauge how their bodies react to the supplement, ensuring a smoother transition. Monitoring Body Response Monitoring how the body responds after starting probiotics is essential. Any adverse reactions, such as severe gastrointestinal discomfort, should prompt a consultation with a healthcare provider. This monitoring helps ensure that the probiotics are effective and safe. Regular monitoring helps catch any adverse reactions early and adjust the treatment plan accordingly, enhancing safety and effectiveness. Maintaining A Balanced Diet While taking probiotics, maintaining a balanced diet is crucial. Probiotics work best when they are part of a diet that supports gut health. This includes high-fiber foods, adequate hydration, and a reduction in the intake of processed foods. A balanced diet complements the effects of probiotics, enhancing gut health and overall wellness, making the probiotic regimen more effective. Image by kucherav / Adobestock Regular Health Check-ups Regular health check-ups are vital to monitor the effects of probiotics on overall health. These check-ups can help adjust the probiotic dosage or strain based on health changes and improvements. Regular check-ups ensure that the probiotics continue to benefit the user without causing unforeseen issues, allowing for timely adjustments to the regimen. The Best Time To Take Probiotics One common question is about the best time of day to take probiotics. While the answer can vary based on the specific probiotic formulation, a general rule of thumb is to take them on an empty stomach. This timing usually means taking probiotics either first thing in the morning or right before bedtime. Knowing when to take probiotics optimizes their efficacy, ensuring the bacteria survive stomach acid and reach the gut where needed. Staying Informed As research on probiotics continues to evolve, it is beneficial to stay informed about the latest findings. New research can provide insights into more effective usage and potential interactions with other treatments. Staying informed allows individuals to take advantage of the latest advancements in probiotic research, potentially enhancing the health benefits received. Being Patient And Persistent Finally, patience and persistence are crucial when starting probiotics. Probiotic benefits can take time to manifest, and consistent usage is key to achieving the desired health benefits. Patience and persistence in probiotics lead to long-term benefits, as the gut environment improves gradually and sustains health improvements. Conclusion Probiotics offer many health benefits, particularly for elderly individuals looking to enhance their digestive health and boost immunity. By taking the right precautions, consulting healthcare professionals, and choosing suitable probiotics, elderly individuals can safely incorporate these beneficial microorganisms into their health regimen. With careful monitoring and adjustments as needed, probiotics can be a valuable part of maintaining health and vitality in the later years. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Adobestock

It is essential to adopt a tone that reflects sophistication, elegance, and exclusivity, mirroring the aspirations of affluent consumers. Achieving these nuances demands careful attention to pacing, intonation, and articulation, ensuring the evocation of desired emotions and perceptions. Successful audio narration styles often entail refined and polished delivery, characterized by a smooth and authoritative tone. For instance, some luxury brands opt for a classical and timeless approach, employing formal language and measured pacing to convey tradition and heritage, while others embrace a contemporary and avant-garde style, using dynamic and expressive narrations to convey innovation and modernity. Voice Casting and Selection Voice casting for high-end brands is a meticulous process, considering various factors to align with the brand's image and values. Desired qualities include sophistication, elegance, authenticity, and versatility in tone and delivery. Thorough auditions and assessment of previous work are essential for resonance with the target audience. Ultimately, selecting the right voice talent is crucial for creating a memorable and impactful brand experience, establishing a profound connection with the discerning audience. Script Writing Crafting compelling scripts for luxury brand campaigns is essential for effectively expressing the brand's identity and messaging. These scripts set the tone, deliver key messages, and evoke emotions resonating with the target audience. Effective script writing techniques for premium brands involve employing sophisticated language, evocative imagery, and storytelling elements that engage the audience emotionally. Integrating elements of exclusivity, luxury, and prestige reinforces the brand's positioning and appeal, driving meaningful connections with consumers and enhancing brand loyalty and engagement. Technical Considerations Recording high-quality audio narrations demands attention to various technical aspects to maintain the brand's premium image. Sound quality, equipment, and studio setup are crucial for projecting professionalism in luxury brand campaigns. Investing in top-notch recording equipment and soundproofing materials is imperative. Setting up a dedicated studio space with proper acoustics and minimal background noise is essential for capturing clear narrations. Achieving optimal recording conditions involves controlling room temperature and humidity, ensuring voice talent comfort. Proper microphone placement and sound isolation techniques enhance recording quality. Post-production editing techniques, such as noise reduction and equalization, further refine the final narration. By addressing these technical aspects, marketers can uphold the brand's reputation for excellence and sophistication in their audio productions. In conclusion, mastering the art of professional audio narration for luxury brands entails meticulous attention to detail. By prioritizing sound quality, investing in top-notch equipment, and leveraging effective script writing techniques, marketers can create resonant audio productions that resonate with their discerning audience, upholding the brand's premium image.
