- Caitlin Simmers Makes Surfing History as Youngest Female World Champion
American Caitlin Simmers created history on Friday after triumphing at the World Surf League (WSL) Finals at Lower Trestles in California, becoming the youngest female to win the world crown. Here is all you need to know: Simmers earned her place in the WSL Finals thanks to securing three tour victories throughout the season, triumphing at the Lexus Pipe Pro, Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and VIVO Rio Pro. This was enough to see her finish top of the 2024 Championship Tour rankings. Arriving in Southern California for the title showdown, Simmers would end up facing Caroline Marks after the reigning world champion overcame fifth seed Tatiana Weston-Webb of Brazil in a tight contest that went down to the wire. Watson-Webb had already overcome Australia’s Molly Picklum in the opening match and then got the better of Costa Rica’s Brisa Hennessy. She then pushed Marks all the way before eventually falling to a narrow 17.43 to 16.87 defeat. In a thrilling final, Marks came out all guns blazing and snatched the lead after the first heat. Simmers then responded in style as she triumphed in the second heat, producing two nine-point rides, much to the delight of the huge crowd lining the beach. In the decider, both riders were starved of waves but it was Simmers who managed to produce when she needed it most, scoring 15.16 as her great friend Marks could only produce one score of 7.17. At just 18 years, 10 months and 12 days of age, Simmers overtook five-time world champion Carissa Moore to become surfing’s youngest-ever world champion. Simmers said: “I had a bit of a meltdown after the first heat, then somehow pulled it together. I don't think I’ve had a nine in a while so it felt really good to get two of them in that second heat. That definitely gained me a little bit of confidence back.” She added: “I came in with the mindset of, ‘I’m going to surf how I want to surf and if I'm going to win then I want to win with the surfing I want to do’. I was lucky enough to keep myself in the moment and choose the best waves, and I'm glad that I could pull it off. It was an amazing day. I’ve always wanted to win a world title so to actually do it is surreal.” In the men’s event, Hawaii’s John John Florence collected his third world title after defeating Italo Ferreira. The Brazilian fifth seed had eliminated Ethan Ewing, Jack Robinson and Griffin Colapinto but ran out of steam in the final as Florence won the first two heats to claim victory. By ML Staff. - Mattress Tech Innovations: Latest Trends That Can Ensure You Sleep in Style
Mattress innovations and technologies have advanced greatly in the last few decades. From spring mattresses to hybrid mattresses, most brands are always searching for new ways to improve sleep. The increased demand for units that offer improved sleep quality, comfort, and support has played a major role in revolutionizing the sector. Here are some of the latest mattress innovations and tech advancements that will improve your nights. Image by Maria Salazar / Pexels The Adoption of Memory Mattresses Memory units may have become quite popular in the last three decades, but this invention has been around for over half a century. These foams are made of a unique material that conforms to your body’s shape while providing support. Most importantly, it can decrease motion transfer between individuals sharing the bed. Memory mattresses have evolved in the last few decades into units that can help individuals with joint and back pain sleep comfortably. Initially, sleeping on these foams felt very warm, so manufacturers started incorporating some cooling technologies in these units. Some of the modern memory foams have an open-cell construction or gel particles that regulate temperature. The latest innovation in the market is plant-based units that replace traditional memory foam. These units are developed using natural oil from various plants, including soya beans. In addition to being eco-friendly, these plant-based units offer the same support and comfort levels as traditional memory mattresses would on high-quality beds. Before investing in a memory foam mattress, you should get a high-quality bed from Kasala . Smart Foams Have Introduced Intelligent Sleep Various sectors have been integrating tech into their products, and the mattress industry is no exception. Smart foams come equipped with advanced technology and several sensors that can adjust the mattress’s firmness while monitoring your sleep patterns. These units come with numerous sleep-enhancing features. These sensors can monitor your breathing patterns, sleep stages, and heart rates. By analyzing these details, these units can provide recommendations and insights that can enhance the quality of your sleep. Some foams come with features that can help them adjust their firmness automatically while adapting to your ever-changing sleeping positions throughout the night. Other top features include integrated home connectivity, ambient lighting, and built-in speakers. Whether you plan on controlling your bed’s temperature while listening to some guided meditation, this unit can offer what you need. Manufacturing Mattresses Using Environmental-Friendly Materials With the world becoming more environmentally conscious, most brands are currently focusing on eco-friendly practices and sustainability. From using materials produced using methods that can lower carbon footprints, the sector is making huge steps towards creating a greener future. Various bed and mattress brands now have units made from natural and organic materials, including natural latex, organic wool, and cotton. These materials don’t have harmful toxins, so they can provide a healthy sleeping environment. Some firms have adopted environmentally friendly mattress-producing processes to reduce energy consumption and waste. Another key trend that will help with sustainability is the introduction of mattress recycling programs. These programs are gaining traction as they promote responsible disposal and reduce foam waste. When you purchase your new king mattress , you should get a brand that offers recycling options. Endnote Personalization or customization has become quite popular in most industries, and the foam sector is no exception. In fact, this has played a huge role in the introduction of some of the above innovations and technologies in the sector. You should expect to find units offering more customized solutions, including adjustable firmness levels. Thanks to these customizable solutions, people can get better sleep that’s suited to their needs. By ML Staff. Image courtesy of Pexels
- Understanding Missouri’s Comparative Negligence Laws
Like many other states in the U.S., Missouri follows at-fault laws and rules . These regulations are governed by a principle called comparative negligence. All this means is that if an accident happens and both parties are at fault, damages will be reduced by the percentage of fault. In Missouri, comparative negligence plays a huge role in compensation payout—essentially, who gets what. Defining Comparative Negligence Comparative negligence is a concept used to determine the percentage of blame for each person involved in an accident. This means that one person will not be blamed entirely. Instead, the system considers how much each involved party contributed to the accident. It also means that in Missouri, you can receive some compensation even if you are partly responsible for an accident. Missouri’s Pure Comparative Fault System Missouri takes things one step further by following pure comparative fault rules. Even if you are 80% to blame for an accident, you can claim 20% damages from the other involved party. This system differs from what other states use, where you cannot claim anything if you are more than 50% to blame for an accident. Pure comparative fault systems aim to ensure everyone involved in an accident shares the responsibility. Comparative Negligence in Action Picture the following scenario : You are driving too fast, and another driver skips a red light, causing a huge accident. When your case goes to court, the judge may decide that you were 40% to blame while the other driver was 60% to blame . So, if your medical bills and car repairs come to $100,000, you can recover 60% of that amount from the other driver ($60,000). However, the other driver can also recover 40% compensation from you. For instance, if the other driver’s expenses totaled $100,000, they could recover $40,000 from you. This picture makes it easy to see how each person’s compensation is tied to their percentage of fault. The Role of the Jury Most personal injury cases do not go to court. However, if your case cannot be settled with the help of your lawyer or via mediation, you can file a court case. In court, either a judge or jury will preside over the case. Many times, a jury decides how much fault each person should bear. The jury does this by examining the evidence presented, listening to witnesses, and hearing arguments from both sides. The final decision on fault percentage can significantly impact the case outcome. Even a small change in the percentages can make a huge difference in how much compensation you can claim or how much you have to pay. Building a strong case is important, whether you are the defendant or the plaintiff. Situations Where Comparative Negligence Applies Many accidents or incidents fall into the scope of comparative negligence. The most common is car accidents. Factors like speeding, distracted driving, or driving under the influence will impact the court’s decision on how much each person is to blame for an accident. If you slip and fall in a store because the floor is wet and you are not paying attention, both factors will be considered when determining fault. The same goes for medical malpractice. You must follow a doctor’s instructions to prevent further injury or illness, even if you believe the doctor neglected their duty towards you. If you do not follow the instructions, a court might use comparative negligence rules against you. This is also true for product liability. If you misuse a product and get hurt , the court will consider that. It will determine how much of the injury is due to the product being defective and how much is due to your actions. How Comparative Negligence Affects Settlements Suppose you live in Missouri and want to file a personal injury case, knowing how the state’s comparative negligence laws work is crucial. This is always why you should hire a personal injury attorney to help you work towards settling a case before it goes to court. Your lawyer can help you determine how much blame you may bear for an accident and how it will affect your case. As a plaintiff, you must know how your actions contributed to the accident. This awareness will make it easier to be realistic about what you can claim. If you are a defendant, you must show that the plaintiff is partly to blame for the accident. This can help reduce the amount of damages you must pay. Make no mistake; insurance companies are very familiar with comparative negligence laws. They use these laws to argue for incredibly low settlement amounts . This is another reason you should have an experienced lawyer on your side. What Happens in Multi-Party Lawsuits? Comparative negligence cases are already complicated, and they become even more so when multiple parties are involved. When these cases go to court, the jury or judge must decide how much blame to assign to each party, including the plaintiff. For instance, in a three-car pile-up, a judge may decide that Driver A is 20% to blame, Driver B is 50% to blame, and you are 30% to blame. So, if Driver A’s damages are $150,000, they could recover $75,000 from Driver B and $45,000 from you. How Comparative Negligence Affects Insurance Claims The relevant insurance provider will also examine how much blame you share for an accident. If they find you are partially at fault, your payout will be reduced by that percentage (outside of court). If you want to claim $50,000 but are 30% at fault, your payment will be reduced. This shows that fault directly affects your payout . Missouri’s comparative negligence laws have not undergone major changes over the past few years, but this can change at any time. Dealing With a Comparative Negligence Case in Missouri Protecting your rights and interests is important when dealing with a comparative negligence case in Missouri. For this reason, you should get an experienced lawyer to help you. Your lawyer will explain the relevant rules and laws and negotiate with insurance providers on your behalf. Moreover, your lawyer can take your case to court if you do not settle upfront. Hiring a lawyer will ensure you get the best possible outcome after an accident or incident in Missouri.
- Miami Dolphins Odds for the 2024 Season
Dolphins fans will be hoping that the team will be able to start the 2024 season as strong as they did last year. They must have the drive and consistency to go one better though, as after the momentum slowed last year, the 2023 season ultimately became lackluster. Obviously, the injuries didn’t help and contributed significantly, as did the team’s polarizing form. While they dominated weaker teams, they couldn’t pull together the same level of performance when they were playing more organized teams. Image by Dave Adamson / Adobestock Can the Dolphins Win the AFC East? Going into the 2024 season, several betting markets are available for Dolphins fans looking to place a wager. Obviously, one of the most popular outright betting markets that attracts the most offseason activity is who will win the AFC East. You can get moneyline odds of around +200 for the Dolphins to finish at the top of their conference. Moneyline is the most popular betting format in the US market. The fractional equivalent of this market is 2/1, while the decimal odds are 3.0. In layman’s terms, if you place a $100 bet on the Dolphins to win the AFC East this season, a winning bet will return $200. You can find details at askgamblers.com if you’re looking for more details about betting odds formats. Do we think the Dolphins will finish at the top of the East? Probably not. Unless the Bills have an injury crisis or a nasty dip in form, the bookmakers agree that the Dolphins are second in the betting order to win their conference, with the Bills at around +125. Image by Carol Highsmith's America / Unsplash Super Bowl Chances? Current odds put the Dolphins' chances of winning the Super Bowl at +2200, which is outside the top 10. We’d say that’s fair as recent power rankings from analysts and experts have them ranked at 12th, which again seems like an accurate assessment. The Chiefs enter this popular outright market as favorites, with both the sportsbooks and fans, at odds of around +550, looking to replicate their mesmerizing victory in the 2024 Super Bowl . Teams have come into the season with much higher odds than this and lifted the Super Bowl. In 2017, the Eagles were at odds of +6000 to win it, and we all know what happened there. It’s undoubtedly wishful thinking that the Dolphins will be in the running for the NFL’s top prize this season though. We’d say the odds are representative. It’d be some story if the team that performed the way it did last year, especially in crucial moments, turns it around to win the top prize. Responsible Gambling Although interest in NFL betting markets continues to grow, especially as online sports betting becomes a more widely recognized subsidiary market, this highlights the importance of responsible gambling. Betting on the NFL is meant to supplement your viewing; you should never view it as a source of income or exceed any initial time or deposit limits you set. These are tools that millions of gamblers use to ensure they keep their betting measured and under control. You can also seek out self-assessments online to explore how problematic your gambling is. Additional tools such as cooling-off periods or self-exclusion can also be used to help. If you, or somebody you know, is exhibiting any gambling issues, you should seek advice from problem gambling charities and experts who can assist. Individual Markets There’s been some activity over the last few months, with the Dolphins adding to their practice squad . Dolphin’s wide receiver Tyreek Hill is the favorite to lead the NFL in receiving yards, with sportsbooks offering a market of around +500. Christian McCaffrey is the favorite for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, but Hill is just behind him at +800. These outright markets can take many twists and turns, and if McCaffrey picks up an injury and Hill can find a rich vein of form, such as the one that resulted in him being named to the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade Team, this betting market might shorten. The Dolphins' resurging quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, is also +800 to finish with the most regular season passing yards. Snippets of promise are dotted throughout the team and the sportsbooks seem to agree. Conclusion While the outright markets for the team to perform might be much wider than some Dolphins fans might hope, the individual markets show that there’s still a lot of quality studded throughout the team. If they can avoid the injuries that derailed last season’s strong start, then there could be value in some of these prices. Predicting outright markets before the season has begun can be challenging, even for the sportsbooks who have top analysts and statisticians trying to figure out a fair price. Multiple variables must be considered, and while betting odds can be a great topic of conversation, they begin to make a lot more sense once the action is underway. We get to see which players are looking sharp, who has continued their form from last season, and whether there could be any potential surprises brewing. Hopefully, the Dolphins' surprise this season is that they can start the season well, carry on that form and make a solid push towards the end of the season. By ML Staff. - Vacheron Constantin Unveils The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac: Year of the Snake
Following an initial 12-year cycle during which Vacheron Constantin dedicated two limited series to each sign of the Chinese zodiac, this year the Maison is launching a new Métiers d'Art series, The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac, based on the figure of the snake. A symbol of wisdom and a mysterious animal associated with renewal and agility, the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac also brings good luck and prosperity. Depicted as a cobra on the dial of the two limited editions, it once again underlines the historic ties uniting Chinese and Swiss cultures since the mid-19th century. From 1845 onwards, the company founded in 1755 began to explore new horizons in Asia, particularly in China. A vibrant tribute to Chinese culture Barely 90 years after its founding, Vacheron Constantin played a key role in establishing the jewellery watch among the high dignitaries of the Court, for whom it produced so-called Chinese watches, richly decorated with engravings or enamels and often sold in pairs. These watches were also remarkably water-resistant, an undeniable advantage given the damp climate of the Middle Kingdom. Since then, the Maison has continued to nurture its historic presence in China, through numerous partnerships and by creating watches influenced by Asian and particularly Chinese culture that are highly prized by watch connoisseurs and collectors. This openness to the world, coupled with an insatiable cultural curiosity, is demonstrated by Vacheron Constantin's latest masterly demonstration of its artistic crafts. A constantly evolving field of artistic expression Vacheron Constantin is opening up new aesthetic perspectives and broadening its artisans’ creative reach with its new Métiers d'Art cycle, The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac. This cycle over the next twelve years will demonstrate the full diversity of craftsmanship, the most advanced techniques of which are perfectly mastered within the Maison. On the dials of these two limited editions, their technical mastery can be appreciated through a multitude of details featuring the combined skills of the artisan engraver and the artisan enameller. The fruit of their talents takes the form of a miniature work on which a cobra unfurls its sinuous body atop a rock. These two gold appliques were created by the master engraver, who expertly carved the precious metal in pink or white gold to create its final texture, using a skilful blend of force and gentleness. Three days of work are needed to sculpt the snake and the rock, whose texture and relief are enhanced by the application of miniature paint and patina. On the pink gold version, the cobra and the rock are ochre-coloured, while the platinum version is anthracite grey. As a final detail, the colours chosen for the indications displayed in the four windows match the motifs of the dial adorned with miniature paintings. To create the decoration, Vacheron Constantin called on the talent of a master enameller. Two techniques were chosen. The first is in gradient Grand Feu enamel for the dial background, while the second is an ancestral Geneva technique, flux-coated miniature opaque enamel for the flora. To paint the decoration, the Master Enameller applies enamel powder of the chosen colour to the surface of the dial using an extremely fine brush. Each colour application requires firing in an oven at a temperature of between 820°C and 850°C. This operation is then repeated as many times as necessary to cover the full range of colours in the design. The dials of the Métiers d'Art The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac - Year of the Snake thus reveal a very fine gradient of nuances between the centre and the periphery, festooned with delicate foliage tinted with ochre tones on the pink gold version and green on the platinum limited edition. These two exclusive 25-piece limited editions are presented in an elegant 40 mm case paired with an alligator leather strap, brown on the pink gold version and blue on the platinum model. Techniques dedicated to decorative artistic craft skills Vacheron Constantin powers these two Métiers d'Art The Legend of the Chinese Zodiac - Year of the Snake watches by means of in-house Calibre 2460 G4. It is distinguished by a unique indication of the hours, minutes, day and date by four discs visible through apertures positioned around the dial periphery. This hands-free movement with trailing indications for the hours and minutes along with jumping indications for the day and date illustrates the Maison’s expertise in designing mechanisms with original displays in which technology is dedicated to serving artistic expression. On the back of the case, a sapphire crystal reveals the 22K gold oscillating weight adorned with a guilloché motif, as well as the movement components with their sophisticated finishes. ML Staff. - Sinha and Phung Triumph Amid Weather Delays at Eagle Trace FJT Event

With many weather delays over the three days, the event was shortened to 36 holes and two champions were rightfully crowned. Boys (16-18) It would be a marathon weekend of golf with the first round lasting a combined 46 hours with two overnight suspensions. With inclement weather constantly threatening play, the event was shortened to 36 holes. Fifty boys would tee it up on Saturday looking to end their Labor Day weekened with a win and all its spoils. Those tied at the top would include Hampton Beebe, Ethan Parish, Liam Ly, Clipper Salmon and Wylie Inman. With 18 other players within four shots of the lead, it would be anyone's trophy for the taking as players began their second rounds. - The Shem Tov Bible: A Masterpiece From the Golden Age of Spain
Sotheby’s announces the auction of the Shem Tov Bible, one of the most significant medieval Hebrew manuscripts ever created. The Shem Tov Bible, written in 1312 in Soria (Castille) by the illustrious scholar Rabbi Shem Tov Ibn Gaon, is a masterpiece of the scribal arts from the Golden Age of Spain. Throughout its numerous decorated folios, the influences of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic artistic traditions are singularly evident. The text of the Shem Tov Bible is also imbued with mystical significance, as Rabbi Shem Tov added a kabbalistic dimension to the Hebrew letters of the Bible. Originally created as a personal bible for Rabbi Shem Tov, the whereabouts of the manuscript was unknown for several centuries until it was recorded in the 19th century as belonging to the prominent Seror family in Tripoli. David Solomon Sassoon, the world's preeminent collector of Hebrew manuscripts, purchased it from the Seror family in 1909 and considered the Shem Tov Bible one of the most important books in his famed collection. The Shem Tov Bible’s distinguished provenance, the recognized accuracy of its text, and the beauty of its magnificently decorated pages epitomize the highest achievements of Hebrew manuscript tradition.
