The African American Film Critics Association ( AAFCA ), and the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association ( LEJA ) are proud to announce  the rescheduled date for the inaugural Afro-Latino Short Film Competition  originally scheduled for October 12, 2024, but postponed due to the inclement weather related to Hurricane Milton. The inaugural event, newly titled The Afro-Latino Short Film Competition REMIX, will now take place on Sunday  December 8, 2024 , 10:30a.m to 6:00pm, at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, located at 2650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311. The event is free and open to the public.   New Deadline for Submission: November 26, 2024 Filmmakers are invited to submit their short films that highlight Afro-Latino culture. The Afro-Latino Short Film Competition aims to provide a vital platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase short-form cinematic narratives that highlight Afro-Latino identities both in the United States and around the world. During the event, filmmakers will have the opportunity to meet with key Hollywood agents and movie executives. Despite being often overlooked, this community is deeply influenced by the complexities of race, class, culture and identity politics. With over 6 million Afro-Latinos representing approximately 24 percent of the Latin American population, this community’s unique cultural experience is a vital voice in film. The histories of African Americans and Latinos would not be complete, or truthful, without the inclusion of the other. As home to the largest population of people from Latin America in the nation, South Florida is the perfect backdrop to explore these impactful, textured and fascinating stories of a vibrant, complex cultural community.  “We are thrilled to help bring the Afro-Latino Short Film Competition to life and to partner with LEJA. Teatro , the acclaimed restaurant by   Constellation Culinary Group  on the second floor of the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House, is thrilled to announce the launch of its new menu. Spearheaded by Chef Jose Danger, Teatro is known for its innovative culinary creations and immersive ambiance, setting the stage for unforgettable pre-show meals and celebrations.  Grilled Octopus at Teatro The season will open with 4X Tony Awards winner, SOME LIKE IT HOT . Inspired by the show, which will be at the Arsht Center from December 3-8, Teatro will serve the Bathtub Booze cocktail, a flavorful combination of Bacardi Añejo Cuatro Rum, Christian Brothers Ruby Port, MEP Florida lemon juice, cherry juice and simple syrup, topped with an egg white foam and black cherries to garnish. The former Veterans of Foreign Wars site becomes a space through which past and present experiences fuse to commemorates Black history through sculptures and installations inspired by banned African American literature. Tales of Opa-Locka: A Heritage Journey (Historic Train Station) curated by Alex Van Mecl, Founder, Opa-locka Preservation Association. This inaugural historical experience presents an in-depth exploration of the city’s near-century-long history and cultural heritage, offering visitors a carefully curated journey through Opa-locka’s unique architectural and social legacy. The exhibition also examines the City’s military history as a training site for the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps before and during WWII Programs & Special Events In addition to its exhibitions, Art of Transformation 2024 will feature a series of thought-provoking panels and special events, inviting visitors to engage deeply with themes of Black identity, aesthetics, and global influence. The first panel, Jamaica on My Mind, chaired by Phillip Thomas, will explore the history of Jamaican contemporary art in political, social, and economic contexts. This conversation, involving artists, critics, and scholars, will reveal how Jamaican art has evolved over time, expressing both national preoccupations and aspirations. By examining the maturity of Jamaican artistic ideas and practices, this panel provides insight into the island’s unique cultural voice within the wider Diaspora. The second panel, Contemporary Art, Contemporaneity, and the Black World – Rethinking the Aesthetic Cartography, features Dr. Malick Ndiaye in conversation with sculptor Siriki Ky. Together, they will discuss African and African Diaspora art, exploring how translation, knowledge production, and aesthetic representation that inform contemporary cultural policy. By rethinking how Black artistic creation engages with the global arts landscape, this conversation offers a fresh perspective on Black art’s transformative potential. These panels are complemented by a range of evening events: live performing arts programs, fashion showcases from innovative Black designers, and film screenings that center Black narratives and aesthetics. Once  again this season, Giorgio Armani Neve returns with a series of activities in spaces specially reimagined to showcase the collection. For Autumn/Winter 2024/25, the women’s garments and accessories are in cool, pearly shades, while for men, dense notes of navy blue and chocolate are the seasonal hues. The selection, designed for every moment of a mountain holiday, is complemented by accessories, helmets, visors, skis and snowboards. Among this year’s initiatives, select Giorgio Armani boutiques around the world—including Milan, London, Munich, Paris, St. Moritz, Tokyo, Chengdu, Chicago, and Boston—will feature windows with sculptural white walls inspired by arctic landscapes, silver metal elements, and striking, minimalist block-style wooden furniture. As part of this initiative, Giorgio Armani and One Ocean Foundation renew their collaboration with a research project aimed at raising awareness of the interconnection between mountains and sea, with a particular focus on pollution and the impact of climate change. CityPlace Doral  is lighting up the holiday season! From Nov. 28–Dec. 31, 2024, the community is invited to enjoy CityPlace Doral’s free “Light Up the Night” winter wonderland seasonal art installation.   Upon entering CityPlace Doral, guests will be welcomed with 120 three-foot illuminated blue and white snowflakes floating overhead on the boulevard and two three-foot snowflakes. Multi-colored LED lighting will be displayed on the Center’s Christmas tree and palm trees lining the outdoor shops. Shoppers can also enjoy a colorful waterfall display choreographed to everyday favorites and holiday classics with a ten-minute light show beginning at the top of every hour from 7 to 11 p.m. each night. A seven-foot topiary woven balsam cheer deer will also be displayed for Instagrammable moments. The community is invited to celebrate the season at Winter Kiddos Land presented by Kiddos Magazine in partnership with CityPlace Doral. The magical day of festive family fun will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 2 to 7 p.m., at CityPlace Doral’s Fountain Plaza.   During the event, CityPlace Doral will host a tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. where City of Doral Mayor Christi Fraga, City of Doral dignitaries,   Frosty the Snowman, Elves, Rudolph and Nutcrackers will join Santa Claus himself to bring the holiday cheer to this memorable day. The Winter Kiddos Land Holiday event will feature first-class entertainment, an art station, character appearances, train rides, a toddler zone, Santa's elves’ workshop, story time, letters to Santa station, inflatable decor, Christmas songs, snow, contest, prizes and much more!
