Miami Native Dancer and Choreographer Dexter Carr Discusses His Role in Hulu’s Reality Series ‘Playground,’ Life in the Dance Industry, and Inspiring the Next Generation of Dancers Miami native dancer and choreographer, Dexter Carr, has become a name to know in the industry, attributed to his dynamic performances and versatile style. His innovative choreography and energetic presence have made him a sought-after talent in the dance industry, and his reign as one of the best is far from over. Carr is known for his impressive performances from Broadway appearances in “Bring It On: The Musical” and “In The Heights” to choreographing Nikki Minaj’s most recent tour, as well as choreographing and dancing for many other industry titans such as Beyoncé, Chris Brown, and Megan Thee Stallion. He also plays a vital role in Hulu’s “Playground”, a new reality series that takes viewers exclusively behind the scenes into the vibrant world of the famous Los Angeles dance studio, Playground, founded by Pussycat Dolls creator, Robin Antin. In addition to his performance career, Carr is also involved in teaching and mentoring the next generation of dancers through his online platform OUTLET and as tour director of the KĀOS Aftermath Summer Tour. Dance industry king Dexter Carr speaks with Miami Living about his part in “Playground”, life in the dance world, and starting a career in the city of Miami. Miami Living: When did you start dancing? Can you pinpoint a moment when you realized dancing was something you wanted to do for the rest of your life? I started dancing at 16 years old and after I booked my first job with Chris Brown (the “KISS KISS” music video), I knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Miami Living: Did you have any instructors in particular that motivated you to get to where you are now? The instructors who motivated me the most were Tawanna Hall, Sheryl Murakami, Jamilia Hall, Aushi Oskarsdottir, George Jones and Richard Rosen (my theater teacher). They have believed in me since day one, never judged me, allowed me to go through my ups and downs but were always in my corner. Miami Living: What was your favorite style of dance growing up, and why? Is it still your favorite style now? Musical theater was my favorite style and actually still is. It’s evolved into a completely different genre than what it used to be. I also love it because it’s a different way of expression than your typical dance routine. Miami Living: During your career as a dancer, what is the biggest challenge you’ve had to face? How did you overcome it? One of the biggest challenges I’ve had to face in my career is realizing that not everybody is going to be in your corner. Even while being someone considered a “popular dancer”, I still deal with haters, negativity, etc. But I’m a harsher critic of myself than anybody ever could be, so I take it with a grain of salt, learn from it, and move on. Miami Living: How was being in huge Broadway shows such as “In the Heights”, and “Bring It On: The Musical”, a change of pace for you? How did this experience add more to your skillset as a dancer? I got to work with the best in the business during my first go on Broadway, which was a blessing, but also scary! HA! You don’t want to mess up, and you wanna make sure you’re doing your job well, but they created such a safe and amazing environment so we all felt so loved. I had an amazing time working with the team. Miami Living: You recently worked with Nicki Minaj, choreographing her most recent tour. What was it like choreographing a tour for such a big name in the industry, and how was your experience working with her? I am a HUGE Nicki fan, so this was a dream come true for me. I also really felt like she gave this album her all, so I was honored to be a part of what her fans would see on the road. It’s an amazing show and I’m so happy I got to be a part of the creative process. Miami Living: You’ve worked with and choreographed for other industry titans such as Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Megan Thee Stallion, Missy Elliott, Katy Perry, Kelly Rowland, Billy Porter, and Tinashe. Do you have any memorable experiences or learning moments from those encounters? ONE THOUSAND PERCENT! One time I was choreographing a video for Tinashe and I planned all this crazy choreography with formation changes and transitions. I showed it to her, and she was like “nahhh”, so I literally had to create a whole new vision in rehearsal. It actually ended up working out perfectly and I love the project. Miami Living: Describe to us your favorite piece of choreography. Who was it for, and what makes it special? It’s actually a dance of mine that went viral, it was to Ariana Grande’s “West Side”. I love it because it makes people feel so good when they do it. That’s all I ever want, somebody to look at my stuff or do my stuff and smile or feel something. Miami Living: Can you tell us about the KĀOS Aftermath Summer Tour? How did you become involved with KĀOS, and how did you assume the role of tour director? I became involved with KĀOS first as a faculty member, and have now transitioned into the director position after multiple years with the company. It’s truly my baby, we’ve done so many tweaks to make it perfect and we’re still doing more. Miami Living: What kind of dancers would benefit from attending your conventions? Any dancer that wants to find their star quality; as a dancer, teacher, choreographer, director, WHATEVER. We want you to be the best at whatever you decide to be. Miami Living: Walk us through the thought process of the creation of your online platform OUTLET. What inspired it, and what’s the purpose behind it? I started it during the pandemic, because of course there were no dance classes to take. My partner Kalen also said we should create something that would bring together all of the people around the world who can’t make it to Playground [a dance studio in Los Angeles]. Let’s give them a community to be a part of. Since then we’ve grown into masterclasses over zoom, tutorials, podcasts, and more. Miami Living: How do you feel OUTLET has brought you closer to the dance community? I’ve actually met so many subscribers just from them coming up to me and telling me they’ve been doing my classes for years. To me that’s so important because they feel safe and vulnerable enough to train with me in the comfort of their own home, and support my brand. Miami Living: Playground is one of the most iconic dance studios in Los Angeles. What’s it like being a part of something so culturally significant in the dance world? It’s amazing! We didn’t know we’d be creating something so big when we started, we just wanted a space where we could kick it and dance and film some dope content. What it’s evolved into is far beyond our wildest dreams. Miami Living: On the reality show “Playground” you are known as “The MVP”. How do you feel you’ve earned this nickname on the show? Because I deal with all the crazies! Haha nah, I’ve put my time in at the studio and I don’t even think of it as a job, it’s my second home and the people there are my second family. Whatever they need or whatever the studio needs, I’m there. Miami Living: Working so closely with other dancers on a regular basis, it’s inevitable that a hefty amount of drama takes place. How do you feel about working in an environment that cultivates such a roller coaster of emotions? I’ve never been scared of a little confrontation, ha! Dancers are humans too, we have emotions, likes, dislikes, but the most important thing is that we exercise respect for each other and the studio...so just keep it cute ;) Haha. Miami Living: Can you tell us about any specific challenges on the show, and how you overcame them? My biggest challenge was feeling like my entire life was going to be documented. That was very hard for me at first because I’m a super private person, but after a while you forget they’re on. Miami Living: What has been your most memorable experience on the show? How do you feel playing such a vital role on “Playground” has improved your skills within your career? Most memorable moment was for sure the Meg Thee Stallion episode. It was so incredible that she was down to be a producer and support us on the show. Miami Living: Growing up in Miami, how did the city influence and inspire your dancing? CULTURE! Culture, culture, culture! Nobody has the sauce like Miami does. Miami is the reason I am the performer I am today. It also gave me the fight and spice to not let anybody take advantage of you. Miami Living: Do you feel beginning your dancing career in a big city like Miami affected the success you have today? Absolutely, imagine If I was born literally ANYWHERE else?! Miami Living: As a Miami native, what are your favorite local spots? Pollo Tropical, and I will die on that hill haha! Miami Living: What do you see in store for your future? Do you have any major goals you intend to accomplish? Does Miami play any part in these plans? I would love to get back to NYC and choreograph a Broadway show. This week DP World Tour Championship in Dubai marks the final opportunity for DP World Tour members to earn PGA TOUR membership in 2025 via the DP World Tour Top 10. Now in its second year, the DP World Tour Top 10 offers dual membership for the following PGA TOUR season to the top 10 players in the final Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, not otherwise exempt (DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking). As part of the Strategic Alliance between the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, the eligibility pathway was created to offer DP World Tour members direct access to the PGA TOUR. The program proved successful in 2024, with two players – Matthieu Pavon and Robert MacIntyre – qualifying for the TOUR Championship and combining for three victories on the PGA TOUR. Seven of the 10 players in the inaugural DP World Tour Top 10 are in position to retain their cards for 2025. One year after finishing No. 12 in the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking, South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence is currently atop the ranking after a season marked by five runner-up finishes that includes the BMW PGA Championship. The 27-year-old also held the lead heading into the back nine at The Open Championship before finishing solo fourth at Royal Troon. Should he retain his position as the leading player from the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking, Lawrence will earn an exemption into THE PLAYERS Championship in 2025. Lawrence is also currently positioned to receive exemptions into two Signature Events on the PGA TOUR in 2025 by virtue of his place in the Race to Dubai Rankings (No. 2). The highest-ranked player in the final Race to Dubai Rankings that did not finish inside the top 50 in the 2024 FedExCup standings will receive exemptions into the 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational. Denmark’s Rasmus Højgaard , who narrowly missed out on PGA TOUR membership in 2024 after finishing No. 11 in the 2023 DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking, will have the opportunity to join twin brother Nicolai Højgaard on TOUR in 2025. Rasmus collected seven top-10 finishes during the 2024 DP World Tour season including his fifth DP World Tour title at the Amgen Irish Open and currently sits at No. 2 in the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking. In 22 career starts on the PGA TOUR, Rasmus has two top10 finishes highlighted by a solo-sixth at the 2022 Corales Puntacana Championship. With his second DP World Tour title at last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, 39-year-old Englishman Paul Waring is now in position to earn PGA TOUR membership after jumping to No. 3 in the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking. The win came in his 332nd career start on the DP World Tour and more than six years since his maiden title at the 2018 Nordea Masters. Italy’s Matteo Manassero experienced a resurgent 2024 season on the DP World Tour with his first win since 2013, positioning himself for PGA TOUR membership at No. 5 in the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking. Manassero, who at age 17 became the youngest winner of a DP World Tour event by claiming the 2010 Castello Masters Costa Azahar and rose to as high as No. 25 in the Official World Golf Ranking in 2013, lost his playing privileges in 2018 and took a brief hiatus from the game. Manassero officially returned to the DP World Tour in 2024 after winning twice on the Challenge Tour in 2023 and is in position to join the PGA TOUR for the first time since competing as a Special Temporary Member in 2014. Thorbjørn Olesen can retain PGA TOUR membership in 2025 thanks to a timely T3 finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship that elevated him from No. 12 to No. 7 in the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking. Olesen earned PGA TOUR membership in 2024 via the DP World Tour Top 10 but sits outside the top 125 in the FedExCup Fall standings at No. 165 after posting two top-15 finishes in 16 starts on the PGA TOUR in 2024 (T14/Valero Texas Open, T16/Myrtle Beach Classic). England’s Jordan Smith currently occupies the 10th spot in the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking following his third-consecutive top-15 finish after a final-round 63 in Abu Dhabi. A two-time DP World Tour winner since 2017, Smith has finished runner-up twice in 2024. Four of the current top 10 players finished between Nos. 11-20 in the 2023 DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking: Rasmus Højgaard (No. 11), Thriston Lawrence (No. 12), Sebastian Soderberg (No. 15) and Jordan Smith (No. 17). Those outside the current top 10 include Spain’s Jorge Campillo (No. 18), who earned PGA TOUR membership in 2024 via the DP World Tour Top 10 and currently sits No. 148 in the FedExCup Fall standings. If Campillo is unable to join the DP World Tour Top 10 following the DP World Tour Championship, he can still retain his PGA TOUR status by moving inside the top 125 in the FedExCup Fall standings at the conclusion of the next week’s RSM Classic (Nov. 21-24). The deadline for players to accept PGA TOUR membership is Friday, Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. ET. The next player on the DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking would get the spot if someone does not accept. The first year of the DP World Tour Top 10 in 2024 saw two players – Pavon and MacIntyre – each win on the PGA TOUR. Pavon claimed the Farmers Insurance Open in his third start as a TOUR member while MacIntyre captured the RBC Canadian Open and later fulfilled a dream by winning the co-sanctioned Genesis Scottish Open, becoming the first Scot to win his national Open since Colin Montgomerie in 1999. Victor Perez qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs as one of the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings, while Ryo Hisatsune (No. 99), Ryan Fox (No. 110) and Sami Valimaki (No. 117) are all in inside the top 125 in the FedExCup Fall standings and in position to remain fully exempt for the 2025 PGA TOUR Season. The 2024 USTA Adult League National Championships began on October 18 and ran through four weekends with various divisions and age groups in play. The competition happened around the county as Arizona, California, and Florida play hosts to many great tennis players.  Half of the draws have been played and a bit over 20 teams representing USTA Florida have battled their hearts out. Through the first two weekends of Adult League Nationals, USTA Florida has two winners and many other top finishers! Let’s take a look at how the Sunshine State is doing at Nationals.   Adult 18 & Over 3.5 Women’s Championship – Broward County   Taking place in San Diego, California, Broward County took the courts for Florida in the 18 & Over 3.5 Women’s Championship. Things got started early for the squad out of Frank Veltri Tennis Center, as they won three of their four pool matches and secured a spot in the playoffs.   This set up a semifinal match against the USTA Intermountain Districts, and it was an intense match. They split the singles lines, having all eyes turn to doubles. Florida was able to take the top two lines and earn their spot in the National Championship.  They matched up against USTA Southern California, and these two sections delivered the match of the tournament. Leydin Gonzalez fell in line one to Eunice Han, but Yvonne Dacal was right there to pick her up and win the second line for singles. With everyone looking at doubles, it was time to lock in for Broward. Southern California jumped out quickly winning the top line, but Florida answered right back thanks to Lyana Blokhina and Paulette Janice Snagg. Everything came down to the third and final line. Jody Julmice and Ili Montnor put the team on their back and stormed back after dropping the first set to win the match and secure the National Trophy!  Sara Contreras, the captain of the squad, embraced the journey and said she had big shoes to fill taking over as captain. “What I can say about this journey is that driven by the love I had for the sport and, most importantly, by the legacy left by our beloved Captain Lili, I took on the role Lili had held leading USTA teams in Broward County, Florida,” she said. “Once I was told by one of my dearest friends, Taci, that my most remarkable quality is resilience – I never give up that’s for sure. And I was lucky enough to put together an incredible group of friends and extraordinary tennis players that share the same principles, values and goals, we all know that a championship team is not built overnight that’s why we worked hard to get to sectionals not just one but more than four times until we made it to Nationals in 2022 and 2024, 2024 was our year to shine brighter than ever, a truly well deserved victory that must be celebrated.” Sara’s peers love her leadership and is grateful that she is leading the team. “Trust and respect is something you earn, not something that is given. The New England team was coming in hot with some impressive pool play matches, and as the teams traded lines back and forth, it was Florida who was able to win a close 3-2 match and advance to the finals against USTA Eastern.  The championship didn’t disappoint as the tennis play was electric. Neither team had lost a match all weekend and they both left it all on the courts. Hillsborough County jumped out early, winning the singles lines as Hiren Bhatt won 6-4, 6-2. With four lines of doubles, anything could happen. The duos of Davis Bilardello and Jaime Villegas, and Chris New and Yarek Orsini were able to take their lines and secure an insanely close 3-2 championship!  Jose Orsini, the captain of the team was excited to lead this team, which consider each other family. Nationals was an amazing experience for all my team members. We had the unique opportunity to play on our own yard, at the USTA National Campus,” he said. “I am a lucky captain to have not only good players but a good group of friends, and have the opportunity to share this great milestone with all our families. Especially for me that my son was one of the players. I told my players that this accomplishment will stay with us forever.” Hillsborough County won the Adult 40 & Over 4.0 Men’s division. They finished with a record of 4-0 and securing a spot in the playoffs.  They took down USTA Southern California in the semifinals in an intense 3-2 match. In the championship, they faced off with USTA Mid-Atlantic where both teams traded lines back and forth. In the end, Mid-Atlantic was able to edge out a 3-2, and Florida finished runners-up.  Captain,, Astrid Miniet is super proud of her team and thankful to be able to partake in USTA Adult League. “We are thrilled to have been part of this fabulous, competitive and well-organized tournament,” she said. “What a fantastic experience! It was a great fight, but ultimately Southern took all three lines, making the Miami squad runners-up.  Anastasia Rodriguez, the captain,  said she was happy with her team’s season and how they came together  through tough times. “Our tennis team had an incredible season, coming together just last year and quickly forming a strong bond both on and off the court. Despite losing a key player to a season-ending injury before heading to Sectionals in Orlando, we got a wild card to play, which fueled us to play to win, and we triumphed, propelling us to an impressive 2nd place finish at Nationals. The Miami Dolphins announced they have elevated long snapper Tucker Addington and tackle Jackson Carman to the active roster for Sunday's game. Addington has appeared in eight career games in four seasons with New England (2022, 2024), Washington (2023) and Miami (2024). He played in Miami's Week 10 matchup at the L.A. Rams. He entered the NFL in 2022 as a free agent with Dallas, where he spent time on the practice squad. Prior to his practice squad stint with the Cowboys, Addington played for the Houston Gamblers—now known as the Roughnecks—of the USFL in 2022. He played collegiately at Sam Houston State, where he appeared in 34 games in four seasons with the Bearkats (2016-19).
