  • Crestron Unveils Latest Enhancements to Home OS 4

For Miami residents seeking a smarter, more connected living experience, Crestron Electronics   unveiled the latest enhancements to its Crestron Home® OS 4 platform earlier this year. The new features bring greater customization options, expanded device compatibility, and streamlined tools, enhancing the smart home experience for both homeowners and dealers. Whether managing lighting, climate, security, or entertainment, Miami homeowners can now enjoy seamless control and remote access, perfect for maintaining their home settings in the city's dynamic lifestyle or while traveling. One of the highlights was the addition of smart home conditional sequences, enabling users to create more personalized automation settings. Attendees saw demonstrations of how the system can adjust lighting automatically at sunset or prepare a home theater for movie night with a single command. These updates simplify the configuration process for dealers while providing more tailored options for clients. Crestron also introduced a branding feature that allows dealers to add their logos to the Crestron Home app and touchscreens, offering a more polished, professional look for their installations. Lighting control saw significant improvements with the integration of Lutron Ketra lighting, which adds even more options for homeowners to customize their spaces. Dealers can now benefit from the flexibility of Crestron’s open ecosystem alongside the advanced capabilities offered by the Crestron Home SIMPL Integration Modules, which allow for custom programming. Security features also received an upgrade, with better user management for door locks and new compatibility with the Yale Pro® 2 Deadbolt Lock. Attendees were particularly interested in the expanded access control, including pin code protection for specific areas of the home, allowing homeowners to limit who can manage certain touchscreens. Crestron also expanded its integration options, including support for the upcoming Digital Graphics Engine 1000, Saros® PoE Speakers, and Axxess Industries’ PrivacyService for the hospitality sector. These updates demonstrate Crestron’s ongoing commitment to providing a flexible, open platform that continues to evolve with user and dealer needs. By ML Staff. Images courtesy of Creston

  • Taylor Swift Has Got the 1830s All Wrong

Taylor Swift has become incredibly popular as a documenter of her dating history. But in her new album, The Tortured Poet’s Department ( released on April 19, 2024 ) , she tries her hand at writing about actual history. In the second verse of “I Hate it Here” (track 23 on the mammoth 31-track anthology version of the album), Swift sings about playing a game that involves selecting a past decade to live in instead of the present. I’d say the 1830s but without all the racists And getting married off for the highest bid The internet was quick to criticise the line, arguing that Swift’s vague reference to “all the racists” suggests a lack of reflection on the historical injustices experienced by people of colour throughout history. Many saw it as a minimisation of the atrocities of the era of slavery. They also pointed out that it would be impossible to remove “all the racists” from the 1830s as if it were a case of removing a few bad apples from a barrel. Racism was enmeshed into the fabric of 19th-century society in Britain and the US. The 1830s without racism is what some might call a blank slate. Those seeking to redress the balance pointed out that Swift does say it’s a silly game and she’d actually hate it in the 19th century in the song itself. I think Swift’s intentions were good, but as a legal historian, I can’t overlook the lyric because it’s not just controversial, it’s historically inaccurate. The line about women “getting married off for the highest bid” scrambles the realities experienced by two distinct groups of people in a way that amplifies the curtailed legal status of women and minimises the lack of rights of people of colour during the 1830s. First of all, women were never married off for the highest bid. Bidding suggests a proprietary exchange, but despite the popular perception, married women in Britain and the US have never been considered the property of their husbands. A doctrine called coverture ensured that when a woman got married, her real estate became her husband’s forever and her moveable property (money, livestock, debts, for instance) was passed to her husband during his lifetime. Coverture also prevented a married woman from forming a contract, running a business, becoming bankrupt, and suing in a common law court without her husband. Coverture endured until the Married Women’s Property Acts were passed in the late-19th century in Britain. In the US, reform was piecemeal, with laws passed at the state level across the 19th century. In short, women’s rights were reduced upon marriage in the 1830s, but a wife was never considered property herself. Perhaps I have taken Swift’s lyrics too literally. If the line is a metaphor, however, it is an unfortunate one, because you know who was considered property in the 1830s? Enslaved people. Most pre-abolition case law involving enslaved people revolved around contracts made for their purchase. Somerset’s case (1772) in Britain concerned the personhood of James Somerset, an enslaved African, and confirmed the status of enslaved people as property. In referencing generic “racism” but specifically (and falsely) mentioning “getting married off for the highest bid”, Swift foregoes any specificity as to the plight of people of colour in the 1830s. She also references something that very much happened, but in the context of the wrong people. It wasn’t (relatively) privileged white women who were auctioned off, but enslaved Africans. By conflating the two distinct legal positions of married women and enslaved people – the two groups implicitly referenced in her lyrics – Swift skips over the worst parts of slavery and overemphasises the worst parts of coverture. To give Swift some credit, she does pick the decade in which slavery was abolished in Britain. The Slave Trade Act 1807 abolished the trade in enslaved people. The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 then replaced slavery with unpaid apprenticeships (that were gradually phased out) and provided a generous compensation scheme for slavers. Slavery in the US, however, continued until the 13th amendment to the constitution was ratified in 1865. Some do, however, think Swift should dip her toe into history. Holly Genovese, a doctoral student in American Studies at the University of Texas, reckons Swift should be considered an activist public historian , while social historian Jonathan Healy forwards a conspiracy that the album 1989 is, in fact, a concept album about Henry VIII . Ultimately, if Swift wishes to pursue an alternative career in public history she might want to check her lyrics a little more closely. By ML Staff. • Tips to Choose the Perfect Frameless Glass Tub Doors for Your Bathroom Remodel

Planning a bathroom remodel can be both exciting and overwhelming. One of the key decisions you'll face is choosing the perfect frameless glass tub doors. These doors are sleek, modern, and can completely transform your bathroom. But with so many options out there, how do you know which one is right for you?  In this article, we’ll walk you through some essential tips for selecting the ideal doors for your bathroom.   Measure Your Space Accurately Before you even start looking at   frameless tub doors , measure your bathroom space. Knowing the exact dimensions is crucial. A door that’s too big or small will not fit properly, leading to water leakage or an awkward appearance. Use a measuring tape and take notes. Measure the width of the tub and the height where the door will go. Double-check your measurements to ensure accuracy. If you're unsure, consider getting a professional to measure. Proper measurements will save you time and money. Consider the Type of Glass Thickness Glass thickness plays a significant role in the durability and safety of your tub doors. Thicker glass offers more strength and stability. It also has a more luxurious feel. However, thicker glass may be heavier, which could require sturdier hardware.  Lighter glass, while easier to install, might not provide the same sense of security. Think about who will be using the bathroom. If you have kids, thicker glass might be a safer option. Choose the Right Glass Finish The finish on the glass can change the entire look of your bathroom. Clear glass is popular because it offers a clean and open feel. It allows light to flow freely, making your bathroom look larger. If you want more privacy, frosted or textured glass is a great choice. It looks stylish and elegant. Choosing the right glass finish can also enhance your bathroom's design . It helps match the fixtures and decor for a complete look. If you value privacy, frosted or textured glass might be better. These finishes offer more seclusion without compromising style. There are also tinted options available if you prefer a bit of color. Choose a finish that suits your privacy needs and style. Opt for Easy-to-Clean Glass Coating Nobody enjoys cleaning water spots and soap scum. Fortunately, many doors now come with special coatings that make cleaning easier. These coatings repel water, reducing the build-up of spots and grime. Look for glass with a protective layer that keeps it looking clear and shiny with minimal effort. It’s a small investment that pays off in the long run, saving you time and effort. Keeping your bathroom looking pristine will be much easier with this feature. Select the Appropriate Door Configuration The doors come in various configurations. You can choose between sliding doors, swinging doors, or bi-fold designs. Each option has its pros and cons. Sliding doors are great for small spaces. They don’t require additional space to open, making them ideal for compact bathrooms. Swinging doors offer a traditional look but need room to swing open. Bi-fold doors combine both sliding and swinging features, providing flexibility. Consider your bathroom layout and available space. Choose a configuration that fits comfortably and complements your design. Evaluate the Hardware Options The hardware on your frameless glass doors can make a big difference in the overall look. Handles, hinges, and brackets come in various styles and finishes. Chrome and matte black are a few popular choices. The hardware should match the rest of your bathroom fixtures. Consistency in style creates a cohesive look. Also, consider the quality of the hardware. Cheap materials may corrode over time, especially in a humid environment. Invest in durable hardware that will stand the test of time. Prioritize Safety Features Safety should always be a priority in any bathroom renovation. These doors are generally safe, but it’s important to check for additional safety features. Look for tempered glass, which is stronger and less likely to shatter. Some doors also come with rounded edges or safety film to further reduce the risk of injury. If you have children or elderly family members, these features are especially important. Peace of mind is priceless, so don’t overlook safety when choosing your doors. Match the Door Style with Your Bathroom Design Your new glass tub doors should blend seamlessly with the rest of your bathroom. Consider the overall design of your space. Is it modern, traditional, or somewhere in between? The style of the doors should complement your existing décor. For a sleek, modern look, doors with minimal hardware are ideal. If your bathroom has a more traditional feel, you might prefer those with decorative handles or a unique finish. Check for Water-Tight Seals One of the main functions of a tub door is to keep water inside the tub. Without proper seals, water can escape, leading to slippery floors and potential water damage. Doors without frames rely on precise installation to ensure a good seal. Inspect the doors for quality seals around the edges. Some models come with magnetic seals or vinyl strips that improve water resistance. Ensuring a tight seal will prevent leaks and keep your bathroom dry and safe. Think About Long-Term Durability A bathroom remodel involves a lot of money, so you want your choices to last. When selecting these doors, think about their durability. Thicker glass, quality hardware, and protective coatings all contribute to a longer lifespan. Consider how often the bathroom will be used and who will be using it. High-traffic bathrooms may require more durable materials. Investing in quality saves you from costly repairs or replacements in the future. Enhance Your Bathroom’s Aesthetics and Value These doors do more than just serve a functional purpose. They also add a touch of elegance and can increase the value of your home. They create a clean, open look that makes your bathroom feel more spacious. Buyers are often drawn to bathrooms with modern features like these doors. • Jill And Carson Spence Master Mixed Shoot-Out

Fifty-two teams of two took on Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club for the Mixed Shoot-Out Championship. In this unique event, three different formats were played including modified alternate shot, scramble and four-ball. Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club was a fair test for the field. Out of bounds and penalty areas lining almost every fairway and smooth, and firm greens proved to be a great test of golf. Championship Division The team of Jill and Carson Spence started their event with an opening round of 1-under par 70. With a difficult opening stretch of holes, the Spence’s made bogey on three of their first six holes. A back-to-back birdie, and eagle on holes 13 and 14 rallied their round during the scramble format.   With steady golf on day two of the championship in the four-ball format the team of Spence and Spence found themselves in a tie for first place after a two under par round of 69. They were the only team in the Championship Division to have an under par round. Also tied in first place was the team of Bruwer and Sellis. The duo started their championship with an opening round 4-under par, 67, but had a difficult time in the Four-Ball, shooting 1-over par. Both teams took to the challenging 18th hole for the playoff. With two solid tee shots, the Spence’s took control of the playoff. Two more solid shots into the green gave the pair two good looks at birdie and ultimately a tap in par to claim the title. Overall Forward Division In the Forward Division of the championship, Man Zhang and Brad Kroll took control of the event with rounds of 70-69. This was enough for a five shot lead over the Forward Field. Their rounds consisted of ten birdies. In second place, the team of Conlon and Conlon was the only other team in the Forward division to finish under par with rounds of 67-71. The two put together nine birdies in pursuit of their second place finish. Rounding out the top three overall forward teams was the team of Shelly and Shelly. With an under par round of 69 in the Four-Ball, they put together an even par championship and solo third place.
