  • The Hidden Histories Of Mediterranean Revival Architecture

Before Art Deco took hold, the Mediterranean Revival architectural style put southeastern Florida on the map. This style, now taken for granted in Florida, was revolutionary at its introduction in the 1920s. For northerners accustomed to the Beaux Art behemoths of New York or Boston, the colorful tilework and shaded courtyards in the "magic city" of Miami served as a portal to distant and exotic geographies. Drawing from the Wolfsonian archives, Temple University historian Emily Neumeier will introduce the architects and developers who popularized this style while uncovering overlooked histories of race, class, and colonialism in Miami's urban development. Date: Saturday, January 18, 2025 Time: 3–4pm Location: The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue Organized with Miami Design Preservation League and presented as part of Art Deco Weekend . • New Art Dealers Alliance and Pérez Art Museum Miami Announce Seventh Annual Acquisition Gift Selection

The New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA)  and Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) are pleased to announce the selection of the seventh annual NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM , an acquisition gift which provides funding for PAMM curators to acquire an artwork for the museum's permanent collection from NADA Miami. For this year's edition, PAMM Associate Curators Jennifer Inacio and Maritza Lacayo have selected Simon Benjamin's Crown and Anchor I  (2024) from Swivel Gallery. Simon Benjamin, Crown and Anchor I , 2024. Centering his practice on the sea and coastal environments, Jamaican multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Simon Benjamin delves into overlooked histories and colonial legacies—as well as how these continue to influence contemporary life. Drawing on maritime imagery, Crown and Anchor I juxtapose the symbolic meanings of both objects thus evoking themes of power, colonial legacy, and resilience. By reimagining these icons, Benjamin crafts a visual dialogue speaking to heritage, belonging, and enduring impacts of collective histories on the present. “My first visit to PAMM was in 2017 to see Jamaican painter John Dunkley's Neither Day nor Night retrospective. Seeing work I knew well from Jamaica reframed in a globally interconnected context made a deep impression on me. I remember hoping that one day, my work would be exhibited at PAMM. It is an honor to have my painting, Crown and Anchor , included in the PAMM permanent collection, along with many artists I admire,” said Simon Benjamin . "We are delighted to acquire a work by Simon Benjamin for PAMM's collection, as it highlights the museum's dedication to amplifying Caribbean voices and narratives. His poetic exploration of migration, memory, and the sea aligns deeply with Miami's cultural and geographical ties to the Caribbean ,” said PAMM Associate Curators Jennifer Inacio and Maritza Lacayo “This acquisition not only strengthens the impactful work of the museum's Caribbean Cultural Institute but also acts as an additional tool within the collection to engage with the region’s layered histories and its enduring connections to place and identity.” The NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM provides funding for PAMM curators to acquire artwork for the museum's permanent collection, which features international modern and contemporary art from the US Latino experience, the African diaspora, Latin America, and the Caribbean. “We are delighted to celebrate the seventh year of our continued partnership with Pérez Art Museum Miami for our annual acquisition gift. This collaboration is pivotal in connecting our galleries and their artists with the vibrant art scene in Miami and simultaneously supporting the South Florida community,” said NADA Executive Director Heather Hubbs . Now in its seventh iteration, the NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM was designed to enhance the relationship between the museum and the fair's diverse roster of exhibiting galleries and artists, and provides an opportunity for NADA to support and engage with the art institutions of Miami-Dade County in exciting and dynamic ways. The NADA Acquisition Gift for PAMM is funded by ticket sales of NADA Miami 2024. ABOUT SIMON BENJAMIN Simon Benjamin (b. 1979, St. Andrew, Jamaica) is a Jamaican multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker based in New York, whose practice considers how the past ripples into the present in unexpected ways. • American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program Celebrates 25 Years of Holiday Wishes for Pediatric Cancer Patients

American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program marked an incredible milestone this year: 25 years of spreading joy and hope to young patients and their families through its annual service project to benefit pediatric cancer patients at the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center. The initiative consists of three key events: the Superhero Party, the Pre-Med Gala, and the Annual Holiday Party. Together, these events created a meaningful journey of care and celebration for the children battling cancer. From the Superhero Party alone, the Pre-Med Society has raised and donated more than $1 million to support pediatric cancer patients, funding improvements at Broward Health Medical Center. Highlights from this year’s event, in celebration of the 25th anniversary, include: Superhero Party: A Celebration of Strength: The festivities began with the Annual Superhero Party, where pediatric cancer patients embraced their inner heroes. For 25 years, this tradition has allowed children to craft 'letters to Santa' and engage in playful, uplifting activities. Over the program’s history, the Pre-Med Society has raised more than $1 million to support these young warriors, helping fund critical improvements at Broward Health Medical Center. One of the most impactful contributions was funding two new pediatric playrooms, creating safe, cheerful spaces where young patients can play and simply be kids. The Annual Pre-Med Gala: A Night of Elegance and Generosity: The 7th Annual Pre-Med Gala raised a record-breaking $41,000 through donations and silent auctions. This black-tie affair brought together parents, students, and community leaders for an evening of dining, dancing, and fundraising. This year’s gala set a record, emphasizing the program’s unwavering commitment to providing for pediatric cancer patients. 25th Annual Holiday Party: A Heartwarming Tradition:  The 25th Annual Holiday Party brought joy to 17 pediatric cancer patients and their families. Students spent $500 on gifts for each child, totaling more than 160 presents. The Pre-Med Society, under the guidance of Dr. Carlos Pulido, director of American Heritage Schools’ Pre-Medical Program, organized the day with activities such as gingerbread cookie decorating, ornament making, bracelet crafting, games, and festive treats. Special guests included cheerleaders from the Florida Panthers, Stanley the Panther, Victory the Rat, and the team’s sub-director of marketing. Broward Health Medical Center’s staff, including the chief operating officer, chief of nursing, chief of physician affairs, and chief of hematology and oncology, also joined the celebration. The highlight of the party was an acapella performance by the American Heritage Schools’ choir, with Pre-Med Society student Noah Duro Andre delivering a solo of “Oh Holy Night.” “The courage of these young patients inspires our students. These events allow them to connect with the children, share joy, and, most importantly, offer support to kids who need it the most,” said Dr. Pulido. “It’s an experience our students carry with them long after they leave American Heritage Schools.” The dedication of the Pre-Med Society and its students has touched the lives of countless families, with over 500 American Heritage Schools’ students participating in the program’s 25-year history. This year’s celebration was not only a testament to their commitment but also a reminder of the transformative power of kindness. ML Staff. Images courtesy of American Heritage Schools

  • Top Quotes: Dolphins Hit The Road to Houston

Trips to Houston haven't been fruitful for the Dolphins over the years. In search of their first win at NRG Stadium (0-5 previously), the Dolphins can find themselves right in the mix for an AFC wildcard spot with a quality performance Sunday. Here's what the players and coaches are saying ahead of the Week 15 road trip: Matching up with the Texans Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the Houston Defense – "They play really well. Sound football. They get some depth in the back end, so they try to mitigate a lot of explosives, but you've got to have your Ps and Qs when you're dealing with a rush that they have. Very similar structure to the team that we just played, but they don't necessarily play the same way, if that makes sense." Head Coach Mike McDaniel on Texans Head Coach DeMeco Ryans – "What DeMeco coaches … it's the nuts and bolts of coaching that actually matters to players when you're talking directly impacting how well they play the game. So much of it is consistency of fundamentals and details and mindset that it's helpful to a degree, but I know how well-prepared he'll be." Running Back De'Von Achane on the Dolphins' Confidence - "We've always got the same confidence. We come out here with great confidence because we know the what type of team we can be. It's always who the better team on Sunday is and we've got to come out and be ready to play." Team's Mindset for December Football Wide Receiver Jaylen Waddle on Last Week's Win, Preparing for Houston – "It was a hard-fought game; it was a game we really needed to win. It just showed what this team could do. It definitely gave us a lot of confidence, but it's a whole other team, a whole other gameplan. We're just going about it like any other week." Defensive Tackle Zach Sieler on December Football – "It's more of our backs against the wall. Every week is a playoff week and I think it's, 'Hey look, we've got to do everything we can in our power.' Stay late, extra tape, extra tubs, whatever you need to do to get the win. I think we did that last week and we need to do that this week." Cornerback Kendall Fuller on Keys to December Football – "Health is definitely one of them, just having everybody out there healthy. And then I don't think it's a secret, it's just a matter of 11 guys on the field doing their job and winning their matchups. Football is always going to be football. When you have guys going out there and making their plays, whatever team makes the most plays is going to win. It's just a matter of it's December, every game counts in December, but at the end of the day, it's still football."
