- Rules of Golf: Must Use Your Hand
There are several times during a round of golf when a player’s golf ball must be replaced (put back in the same location), or placed (placed in a new location). The Rules of Golf tell us how a golf ball must be replaced or placed. First off, let’s take a look at some examples when a ball must be replaced or placed. Examples of when a ball at rest is moved and must be replaced: A ball has been marked and lifted from a putting green A ball has been accidentally moved by a person on the putting green (no penalty and replace) A ball has been marked and lifted because another asked for it to be lifted because it was interfering with their play A ball was moved by an outside agency (animal, another person, etc.) A ball on the putting green was marked and lifted, replaced, and then natural forces (wind, water, or gravity) caused the ball to move A ball was moved by the player, partner or caddie other than during searching (one stroke penalty if it wasn’t on the putting green and replace the ball) A ball was accidentally moved during reasonable search efforts (no penalty and replace) Examples of when a ball must be placed (new location): A ball is on the putting green and the player has interference for stance, lie of ball, area of intended swing, for an abnormal course condition (temporary water, immovable obstruction, animal hole or ground under repair) A player drops a ball in the relief area twice and it will not come to rest in the relief area (place ball on the spot where the second drop first struck the green) When playing Model Local Rule E-3 - Preferred Lies and a player places a ball in the relief area There are more instances when a player must replace or place their ball; however, the ones listed above are the more common situations. Ok, so now we’ve reached the part of how the ball must be placed or replaced. Rule 14.2b(2) states that “the ball must be replaced (or placed) by setting it down by hand on the required spot and letting it go so that it stays on that spot. If the player plays a ball that was replaced in a wrong way but on the required spot, they get one penalty stroke.” At a junior tournament recently, when placing her ball on the putting green, a player would toss her ball on the putting green and roll it into place with her putter and then drag her ball marker away with her putter head. She then proceeded to make the stroke. Once the Committee was aware of this process, they informed her that each time she did that she must add one penalty stroke. So if you are playing lift, clean and place, you must place the ball by hand. If you simply rolled the ball into position with your club, you placed the ball in a wrong way and would receive a one stroke penalty if you do not fix it before making the stroke. By ML Staff. - Mildred Thompson: Frequencies – A Retrospective of Abstraction, Science, and Sound
The Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (ICA) presents Mildred Thompson: Frequencies from May 10 through October 12, the most comprehensive solo museum exhibition to date for this pioneering American artist. “Mildred Thompson: Frequencies” is the most comprehensive solo museum exhibition to date for American artist Mildred Thompson. Bringing together approximately fifty works from 1959 to 1999, the exhibition surveys Thompson’s multifaceted practice, featuring paintings, sculptures, etchings, drawings, assemblages, and musical compositions. Throughout her peripatetic career, Thompson worked across media and disciplines, drawing from both scientific research and a poetic pursuit of abstraction to explore the limits of perception. Often featuring radiating swirls of color and gesture, her diverse bodies of work seek to visualize extremes of scale—from the human body and built environments to microscopic particles and the vastness of the cosmos. Courtesy Galerie Lelong & Co. While abstraction is central to her practice, Thompson’s earliest works also engaged with figuration and architecture. After relocating from the United States to Germany in the late 1950s, she created surreal, figurative drawings and etchings, often depicting female figures. In the late 1960s and 1970s, her focus shifted to built environments, as seen in her “Wood Pictures” series, abstract minimalist compositions made from found wood. These works, featuring intricately constructed linework and sometimes incorporating hinges or metal hardware, are reminiscent of architectural features and facades. The artist’s explorations of built space continue in her “Window Paintings” (1977), a series in which brightly colored, abstracted spaces appear to be framed by windows. After returning to the United States, Thompson moved away from observational forms toward schematic compositions that bridge her earlier figurative works and her later abstract paintings. Drawing from a wide range of influences, Thompson sought to transcend prescribed identities and gender roles in her artistic practice. Extending beyond painting and sculpture, her works on paper from the 1970s and ’80s highlight her inventive approach to printmaking and drawing, from intricate intaglio prints of amorphous forms (“Death and Orgasm” series, 1978) to expressive watercolors of celestial constellations ( Pleiades III , 1988). Her paintings from the 1990s delve into the invisible forces of particle physics and quantum mechanics (“String Theory,” 1999) and magnetic fields ( Magnetic Fields , 1991). In her “Radiation Explorations” series (1994), she translated radiation and UV light into luminous colors and gestural brushstrokes. Later in her career, Thompson focused on cosmologies and astrological phenomena. For the first time in over three decades, a significant selection of her “Heliocentric Series” (c. 1990–94) will be on display in this exhibition. These paintings are presented alongside her largest paintings, the series “Music of the Spheres” (1996). Depicting Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars, each of the four paintings is accompanied by an original electronic music composition by Thompson. The tracks, collectively titled Cosmos Calling , evoke science fiction soundtracks and Afrofuturist music. Thompson described them as “a journey through the soundscape of space inspired by the NASA Voyager recordings.” Mildred Thompson (b. 1936, Jacksonville, Florida; d. 2003, Atlanta) studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting, Howard University, Brooklyn Museum School, and University of Fine Arts in Hamburg (Hochschule für Bildende Künste). Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, Atlanta (2019); New Orleans Museum of Art (2018); SCAD Museum of Art, Atlanta (2016); Leopold Hoesch Museum, Dueren, Germany (2009); Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art (1997); James A. Porter Gallery of Art, Howard University, Washington, DC (1975); Harvard University, Cambridge (1975); and Neue Galerie – Sammlung Ludwig, Aachen (1973), among many others. Thompson’s work is held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, New York; Howard University, Washington, DC; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC; Glenstone, Potomac, Maryland; Harvard Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond; and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among numerous other institutions. In addition to her artistic practice, Thompson was as an educator and served as associate editor of Art Papers from 1989 to 1997. “Mildred Thompson: Frequencies” is organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and curated by Stephanie Seidel, Monica and Blake Grossman Curator. As residents and visitors crowd the state's roads and public spaces, the probability of accidents and injuries inevitably increases. Strengthening personal injury safeguards is crucial to ensure that victims receive adequate support and compensation. Image by calafoto / Adobestock With a diverse mix of people, Florida experiences unique challenges that require tailored protective measures. The urban regions, in particular, see higher incident rates, underscoring the importance of accessible legal resources. The state's current legal framework must evolve to keep pace with demographic shifts and the rising demand for public safety. Addressing these needs can help mitigate the long-term impacts on individuals and communities alike. This expanded focus on protection could drastically improve support structures and legal recourse for those affected by personal injuries. The Impact of Population Growth on Florida's Legal System Florida's rapidly increasing population affects various aspects of the legal system. Personal injury cases are on the rise, leading to higher insurance costs, and legal frameworks are facing significant challenges. There's a pressing need for robust personal injury protections to address these issues effectively. Increased Personal Injury Cases and Insurance Costs As more people settle in Florida, incidents related to personal injury have escalated. Car accidents and slip and fall cases are especially common, with higher traffic congestion and crowded public spaces contributing to this trend. The state has one of the highest population densities , intensifying the frequency of negligence actions . This surge leads to greater demand for legal claims, which subsequently raises insurance costs . Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance is under pressure due to rising economic damages and non-economic damages . Issues around pain, suffering, and emotional distress require careful legal handling. The growing need for compensation impacts individuals and families, underscoring the necessity for strategic legal solutions. Challenges in the Legal Landscape The influx of residents presents unique challenges within Florida's legal framework. Increased personal injury claims and legal rights necessitate updates to state laws and road safety regulations. This is evident in sectors like workplace accidents and motorcycle accidents , where existing laws may not be sufficient to address evolving needs. Tort reform initiatives and adjustments to the statute of limitations are important considerations. As the landscape becomes more crowded, the need to adapt liability laws intensifies, ensuring they are apt for handling a diverse set of incidents from product liability to dog bites . Legal practitioners must stay informed about cultural shifts and economic factors that influence how justice is served. The Need for Effective Personal Injury Protection With rising negligence cases, Florida's personal injury law must advance to protect residents adequately. Legal systems need to provide stronger personal injury protections that cover both economic and non-economic damages . The comparative negligence rule becomes crucial in determining the level of fault and compensation. Legal representation plays a vital role in ensuring fair outcomes for victims. Reinforcing road safety measures and informing the public about legal rights can diminish incidents. Adapting legal strategies and compensation structures keeps pace with growth, ensuring that residents receive the justice they deserve in an evolving society. This involves updates to legal frameworks and the critical role that injury attorneys play in supporting those affected by accidents and misconduct. Legislative and Legal Advances Florida's expanding population underscores the necessity for effective legislative solutions. Recent legal changes address these growing needs with reforms to Florida Statutes . Notable adjustments include modifications to the state's no-fault insurance system , which influence how medical damages are processed. Product liability lawsuits are another focus. These cases often involve federal courts and aim to enhance consumer safety by holding manufacturers accountable. Such measures are vital for ensuring those harmed receive fair compensation for loss of enjoyment of life . Florida's lawmakers, influenced by Governor Ron DeSantis , are examining more rigorous criteria for negligence in Florida cases. They are also reviewing the use of mediation and arbitration as alternatives to protracted legal battles, aiming to speed up the resolution of civil cases . The Role of Personal Injury Attorneys Personal injury attorneys in Florida are vital in advocating for their clients' rights. These professionals guide claimants through the personal injury claim process , ensuring their rights are protected from the initial consultation through to a potential court decision. - USST and ODP Kickstart the LA28 Quad at Team USA Training Center in Colorado
Surrounded by the Olympic spirit, the US Sailing Team, ODP athletes, and staff gathered February 7-9, in Colorado Springs, CO, the heart of Team USA, for three days of fitness testing, meetings, and team building exercises. The Colorado Springs Olympic and Paralympic Training Center (CSOPTC) is a world-class training venue open to all Team USA athletes, focusing on the full athlete experience with lodging, a dining hall, sports medicine clinic, science lab, and state of the art fitness facilities. Opening meeting and brainstorming at the Colorado Springs Training Center “Bringing the US Sailing Team and US Sailing Olympic Development Athletes to the Colorado Springs Olympic and Paralympic Training Center at this stage in the LA28 quad was a valuable opportunity to step away from the water and our familiar training environment, immersing ourselves in an inspirational Olympic spirit that transcends our sport,” said High Performance Director, Marcus Lynch. “As a team, we set the foundation for the culture we aim to build, not just for LA28, but for Brisbane 2032 and beyond. Together, we identified the core values that resonate most with us which we will continue to reinforce through open and collaborative discussions throughout our Olympic journey. Everyone actively engaged in thought provoking, educational, and interactive sessions designed to enhance each individual athlete’s journey to the podium.” Dallman-Weiss finishes her cycling test in the altitude chamber simulating sea level conditions, fist bumps USST Head of Operations Sally Barkow The schedule included time for team discussions, campaign planning support, nutrition coaching, Team operations review, a women’s health discussion for female athletes and staff (led by ODP Director Rosie Chapman, USST Head of Operations Sally Barkow, and USST Nutritionist Shelly Guzman Johnson), and in-depth fitness testing with USST Physiotherapists and USOPC Sports Science & Medicine. The fitness testing was conducted both at the natural approximate 6,000 ft Colorado Springs altitude and within a simulation chamber set to sea level conditions so further testing can be run in coming years at other training sites closer to regular team operations. “It was incredibly special to be provided with the tools and resources at the Sports Science department for our testing,” said Tokyo and Paris Olympian Lara Dallman-Weiss. “The professionals there, along with the US Sailing Team Physiotherapists from Force Physical Therapy, reminded us that the point was to set our baseline for this quad and focus on our individual numbers. Along with the endurance and strength and conditioning testing, we also had access to unlimited recovery tools. I love using data to learn how to optimize performance and it was inspiring to tap into everything our national training center has to offer.” The conversations sparked in Colorado are just the beginning, and they’re set to continue with even greater momentum back at sea level. One key takeaway was the commitment to launching women’s health workshops that will extend beyond the US Sailing Team, reaching coaches, athletes, and sailing programs at all levels. Historically, women’s health in sports has been a top-down conversation, but the discussions in Colorado pushed to bring this vital topic on the unique challenges facing female athletes down to youth levels. Attendees noted how important it is to extend the support and create the space for open conversations for girls just starting their sailing experience. At the end of the camp, athletes in attendance and those who couldn’t make it were sent Athlete Agreement documents to join the USST and ODP rosters. Those who sign will be joined by any who unlock qualification with a high enough finish at the upcoming Princesa Sofía regatta in Palma de Mallorca, Spain March 28-April 5 , or at their respective class’s World Championship in 2025. Community involvement is a key focus, and ASC provides a variety of engaging activities to support individuals in achieving their goals while exploring new interests and hobbies. Depending on each participant's individualized plan, they may engage in goal-oriented classes or activities such as music therapy, art therapy, computer training, physical fitness, cooking and daily living skills. The renovation project consisted of several key components designed to improve the functionality, accessibility and overall quality of the Adult Day Training Program, including facility upgrades, technology integration and program expansion. With the renovated facilities, the Adult Day Training Program can now accommodate 70 participants and offer a wider range of activities and services. A proud graduate of the University of Cape Town, Lesley is a significant figure in global finance. Currently, she is a managing partner at GreensLedge Capital Markets, LLC, and previously held leadership positions at Credit Suisse Group AG and Bear Stearn, and also currently serves on selected corporate Boards of Directors. Over the last 18 years as Zara’s International Board Chair Lesley has strategically navigated the center’s growth, providing academic support, the arts, food, clothing, and mentorship to thousands of vulnerable children and the extended community.. Zara’s Center will soon open a new campus designed in partnership with Krueck Sexton Partners as a gift to children living in Emganwini, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. To spread the news about the project, and to raise needed funds, Lesley will lead ‘Team Zara’ on March 2, 2025 in the Baptist Health Miami Beach 305 ‘5k and Half Marathon’. http://fozc.org/donate Lesley Goldwasser in The Betsy Lobby Gallery with Rosa, one of The Betsy’s 'Canine Executive Officers' (Credit: The Betsy Hotel) On the South Florida arts scene, in addition to serving on the now storied Miami Beach Classical Music Festival, Lesley’s curatorial work has garnered the attention of artists, artist reps, galleries and museums around the world. Lesley has invited Israeli-American artist Elinor Carucci (widely known for her collection, RBG collars) to discuss her timely work on March 27 from 6:15-8 p.m. , in partnership with James Snyder, Director of the Jewish Museum in NYC. Carucci’s collection tells the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's brave legacy through images of the late justice's iconic collars. (Carucci’s work debuted at The Betsy as part of Art Week Miami Beach 2024.) Artwork currently on exhibition at The Betsy by Sonia Hamza (Images used with permission of the artist) About the Exhibitions Believing that The Betsy’s walls are meant for more than decoration and public areas are meant for more than waiting, Lesley creates expansive and inclusive art shows that include seldom-seen historic images of icons like the Beatles, and work by socially-conscious emerging artists. (https://www.thebetsyhotel.com/explore/exhibitions) Lesley’s exhibition curation innovatively extends to an experiential soundscape through playlists fashioned from 25,000 multi-genre musical works playing on unique rotation in Betsy gallery spaces. Lesley’s vast knowledge of music and musicians - in varied cultures, time periods, and genres - is truly remarkable. Over the past dozen years, and for Betsy’s Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 openings, Lesley commissioned dancers in partnership with Peter London Global Dance Company and invited world-renowned poets to read, which elevated the experience for all involved. Recently Lesley has also championed digital creators through projections on The Betsy Orb, an egg-shaped architectural masterpiece by architect Allan T. Shulman that serves as a functional bridge and art canvas connecting The Betsy’s two buildings, in partnership with the City of Miami Beach. (Credit: World Red Eye) Lesley Goldwasser’s interest in and commitment to the artists she exhibits at The Betsy routinely goes beyond simply ‘hanging images on the wall’. She collaborates with them to assist in building their brands, believing that artists need the support of those that believe in them, to achieve global acclaim. Whether she’s working with an artist whose legacy is established, and is poised to grow even more, or with a youthful artist on the precipice of recognition. Barbara Hulanicki is best known as the founder of the iconic London clothing store Biba, frequented by more than 1 million patrons weekly during its height in the 1960s. Her work has had a global resurgence in the last 10 years, partially inspired by celebrations and exhibitions of her work at The Betsy, curated by Lesley Goldwasser. “Lesley Goldwasser is exceptionally kind and generous. She has been incredibly supportive of my design endeavors. I feel fortunate to call Lesley my friend.” Barbara Hulanicki captured in The Betsy Board Room Gallery - in front of wall paper she designed. The image of Twiggy is one that she styled and photographed. ‘Twiggy’ now hangs in the 3rd Floor Galleries at The Betsy. (Credit: The Betsy Hotel) Ray Tenorio supports his life as an emerging artist with a ‘day job’ waiting tables at LT Steak and Seafood at The Betsy Hotel. He’s a serious artist whose work has twice earned him a show at The Betsy, and he’s been exhibited at Iris Photo Collective in LIttle Haiti as well. Born in Cuba, with an arts education from Berlin and Miami, Ray created this portrait of Lesley (and her husband Jonathan Plutzik) as a gift, noting his thanks and admiration. The Betsy Hotel’s Lesley Golwasser and Jonathan Plutzik- Portrait by Ray Tenorio (Credit: Ray Tenorio) Without a doubt, Lesley’s work has been instrumental to The Betsy becoming a driving force in the cultural transformation of Ocean Drive and South Beach. In addition to incredible exhibitions, the property offers jazz nine times a week, classical music pop-ups, poetry readings, and an artist-in-residency program, The Betsy Writer’s Room , which has hosted over 1,200 writers and creatives. From the hallways to the elevators and staircases, guests and visitors find thought-provoking spaces at The Betsy that embody words of the late poet Hyam Plutzik (Lesley’s father-in-law) that are the tagline for the property: Expect no more. This is happiness. By ML Staff. Images credited individually.
